The Last of Us: Left Behind is a 2014 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is a downloadable expansion pack to the 2013 game The Last of Us. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the game switches between two stories: the first, set three weeks before the events of The Last of Us, follows Ellie as she spends time with her best friend Riley in an abandoned mall in Boston; the second takes place between the Fall and Winter chapters of The Last of Us and focuses on Ellie's attempts to scour an abandoned mall in Colorado for medical supplies to heal Joel while dealing with enemies. The game is played from a third-person perspective; players use firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth to defend against hostile humans and zombie-like creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. Players can use "Listen Mode" to locate enemies through a heightened sense of hearing and spatial awareness. The game also features a crafting system, allowing players to customize weapons through the upgrades. Left Behind was released worldwide on February 14, 2014 for the PlayStation 3; it was later bundled with The Last of Us Remastered, an updated version of the game released for the PlayStation 4 on July 29, 2014,[a] and then released as a stand-alone expansion pack for both consoles on May 12, 2015. It was included in The Last of Us Part I, a remake of the game released on PlayStation 5 in September 2022; Windows in March 2023. The Last of Us: Left Behind was highly anticipated due to the critical acclaim received by The Last of Us. It received generally favorable reviews by critics, with particular praise for its story, characterization, and depiction of female and LGBT characters (including a kiss between Ellie and Riley deemed by critics as a "breakthrough moment" for video games), while some criticism was aimed at a battle sequence late in the game that was considered by some to be "unnatural" and "forced". Like its parent game, it received several awards and nominations. The story of Left Behind was adapted in the seventh episode of the television series The Last of Us in February 2023. Gameplay See also: Gameplay of The Last of Us The gameplay of The Last of Us: Left Behind is similar to the basic gameplay of The Last of Us. It is an action-adventure game that uses a third-person perspective. The game involves gunfights, melee combat, and a cover system.[1] Players control Ellie. An added feature in combat is the ability to focus the attention of the Infected towards human enemies, by throwing objects to distract them. This results in a lower number of enemies to encounter, giving players a tactical advantage.[2] Throughout the flashback section, players encounter locations and activities around the mall, such as a carousel, photo booth, video arcade, mask store, and water guns. All of these locations and activities have some level of interactivity, allowing players to use them in different ways; for example, the photo booth allows players to select different poses to strike for a picture, while using the water guns prompts players to engage Riley in a water gun fight.[3]Plot After an ambush that leaves Joel (Troy Baker) severely injured, Ellie (Ashley Johnson) searches an abandoned mall in Colorado for supplies to heal him. She discovers a medical kit in a derelict military helicopter that has crashed through the roof. Making her way back to the unconscious Joel, Ellie must deal with the Infected and members of the hostile human group who injured Joel in the first place. She fights her way back to Joel, treats his injury, and takes him to a hideout to see out the worsening winter. Months earlier, three weeks before Ellie meets Joel, Riley Abel (Yaani King) surprises her at their Boston military boarding school after running away over a month ago. She reveals that she has joined the Fireflies, a revolutionary militia group, and takes Ellie to explore an abandoned mall. They have fun with a carousel, photo booth, arcade, and Halloween store before having a water gun fight. Riley reveals that she has been assigned to a group of Fireflies in a different city, but broke the rules to come and see Ellie one last time. The girls argue, but Ellie eventually tells Riley that she supports her decision as she knows Riley has wanted it for a long time. Before they part ways, Riley plugs Ellie's Walkman into the sound system of an electronics store, and the two dance on a display case to Etta James's cover of "I Got You Babe". Ellie tearfully begs Riley not to leave; Riley agrees and rips her Firefly pendant off, prompting Ellie to kiss her. Riley responds positively, though the two are then chased by a horde of Infected alerted by the music. They outrun most of the Infected and kill the remainder, getting bitten in the process. They briefly consider shooting themselves to prevent the infection taking over them, but instead choose to spend their final hours together. While Riley is assumed to have succumbed to the infection, Ellie discovers that she is immune, triggering the events of The Last of Us.Naughty Dog began developing The Last of Us: Left Behind following the release of The Last of Us in June 2013, with a team about half the size.[4] Following the decision to create single-player downloadable content for the game, the development team immediately decided that the story would focus on the character of Ellie; they found that players of The Last of Us were interested to learn about events in Ellie's life prior to the events of the main game, particularly the events involving Riley Abel, whom Ellie mentioned in The Last of Us. In addition, they found that some players were interested in the events that occurred between the Fall and Winter segments of the main game, in which Ellie cares for an injured Joel. This led to the team deciding to contrast these two events against each other, feeling it would help the story's pacing. Game director Bruce Straley said that the team felt the story justified the development of Left Behind.[5]The Last of Us: Left Behind received "generally favorable reviews" from critics, according to review aggregator Metacritic, based on 69 reviews.[15] Reviewers praised the character development, story and subtext, gameplay and combat, and depiction of female and LGBT characters. The kiss shared by Ellie and Riley was described by Kotaku's Hamilton as "video gaming's latest breakthrough moment" and "a big deal".[27] Keza MacDonald of IGN wrote that the kiss was "so beautiful and natural and funny that [she] was left dumbstruck".[28] Edward Smith of International Business Times felt that the kiss was "the first example of intimacy in a videogame that's meant anything", recognizing it as "an expression of both burgeoning teen sexuality and of ... friendship".[29] Amplify, a project of the non-profit Advocates for Youth, reported that the kiss had attracted criticism from some players.[30] Many reviewers found the gameplay and combat a refreshing difference from other games. Eurogamer's Harman commended the game's ability to link the gameplay to the story, noting that it adds "diversity and dynamism".[18] Helgeson of Game Informer praised the additional gameplay feature allowing players to force fights among the Infected and human enemies, naming such sequences "engaging",[19] while Martin of The Daily Telegraph appreciated the game's ability to contextualize the combat sequences.[25] However, some critics felt negatively about a gameplay sequence occurring late in the game, which requires players to kill a large number of enemies;[21] GameSpot's Mc Shea noted that it felt "unnatural",[20] and IGN's Moriarty called it "forced".[2] Electronic Gaming Monthly's Eric L. Patterson wrote that players will feel "disappointed" if they play the game "more for the gameplay than the story".[17] The world and environments of the game drew acclaim from many reviewers. Polygon's Kollar called the game's locations "beautiful",[21] while Eurogamer's Harman wrote that the level design significantly improved the environments.[18] Moriarty of IGN praised the setting within the mall, due to its regularity in "the real, pre-apocalyptic world".[2] Mc Shea of GameSpot also felt that the game's focus on exploration allowed the "well-realized environments [to] breathe",[20] and Martin of The Daily Telegraph noted that Ellie's body size allowed for "quieter and faster" movement throughout the environments.[25] Awards The Last of Us: Left Behind received multiple nominations and awards from gaming publications. Following its release, GameSpot awarded Left Behind Game of the Month for February 2014.[31] For the year 2014, the game was review aggregator GameRankings' highest-rated PlayStation 3 game,[32] and Metacritic's third-highest-rated PlayStation 3 game.[33] GameSpot nominated the game for Game of the Year,[34] and awarded it PS3 Game of the Year.[35] It also received Most Valuable Add-On Content at the SXSW Gaming Awards,[36] and Best DLC from Hardcore Gamer.[37] The game's story received awards at the 11th British Academy Video Games Awards,[38] IGN AU Black Beta Select Awards 2014,[39] and the 67th Writers Guild of America Awards;[40] the game's ending also won Best Memorable Moment from IGN Australia.[39] The character of Ellie received Most Valuable Character at the SXSW Gaming Awards, while Ashley Johnson's performance as the character won an award at the British Academy Video Games Awards.[38] The game was also recognized as being innovative; it was nominated for the Games for Change award at The Game Awards 2014,[41] as well as the Matthew Crump Cultural Innovation Award at the SXSW Gaming Awards.[36]

In 2013, an outbreak of a mutant Cordyceps fungus ravages the United States, transforming its human hosts into aggressive creatures known as the Infected. In the suburbs of Austin, Texas, Joel (Troy Baker) flees the chaos with his brother Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce) and daughter Sarah (Hana Hayes). As they flee, Sarah is shot by a soldier and dies in Joel's arms. Twenty years later, civilization has been decimated by the infection. Survivors live in totalitarian quarantine zones, independent settlements, and nomadic groups, leaving buildings and houses deserted. Joel works as a smuggler with his partner Tess (Annie Wersching) in the quarantine zone in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts. They hunt down Robert (Robin Atkin Downes), a black-market dealer, to recover a stolen weapons cache. Before Tess kills him, Robert reveals that he traded the cache with the Fireflies, a rebel militia opposing the quarantine zone authorities. The leader of the Fireflies, Marlene (Merle Dandridge), promises to double their cache in return for smuggling a teenage girl, Ellie (Ashley Johnson), to Fireflies hiding in the Massachusetts State House outside the quarantine zone. Joel, Tess, and Ellie sneak out in the night, but after an encounter with a government patrol, they discover Ellie is infected. Symptoms normally occur within two days, but Ellie claims she was infected three weeks earlier and that her immunity may lead to a cure. The trio make their way to their destination through hordes of the infected, but find that the Fireflies there have been killed. Tess reveals she has been bitten by an infected and, believing in Ellie's importance, sacrifices herself against pursuing soldiers so Joel and Ellie can escape. Joel decides to find Tommy, a former Firefly, in the hope that he can locate the remaining Fireflies. With the help of Bill (W. Earl Brown), a smuggler and survivalist who owes Joel a favor, they acquire a working vehicle from Bill's neighborhood. Driving into Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joel and Ellie are ambushed by bandits, and their car is wrecked. They ally with two brothers, Henry (Brandon Scott) and Sam (Nadji Jeter). After they escape the city, Sam is bitten but hides it from the group. As his infection takes hold, Sam attacks Ellie, but Henry shoots him dead before taking his own life. In the fall, Joel and Ellie finally find Tommy in Jackson, Wyoming, where he has assembled a fortified settlement near a hydroelectric dam with his wife Maria (Ashley Scott). Joel decides to leave Ellie with Tommy, but after she confronts him about Sarah, he lets her stay with him. Tommy directs them to a Fireflies enclave at the University of Eastern Colorado. They find the university abandoned, but learn that the Fireflies have moved to a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. The two are attacked by bandits, and Joel is severely wounded while escaping.

The Medium is a psychological horror video game developed and published by Bloober Team. It was released for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on January 28, 2021, for PlayStation 5 on September 3, 2021 and for Amazon Luna on February 17, 2022. A planned summer release for macOS and Apple Silicon was announced on February 16, 2023.The Medium is a psychological horror game played in third-person as Marianne, a medium who can travel into the spirit realm.[3][4] Being able to inhabit both worlds aids puzzle solving. Her psychic abilities may also be used against hostile forces and are recharged by interacting with energy spots called spirit wells.[5]Plot The Medium is set in post-Communism Poland in 1999.[6][7] Marianne, a spirit medium that helps troubled souls seek final respite, has a recurring dream of a man shooting a young girl by a lake. While grieving over the death of her foster father, Marianne receives a mysterious phone call from a man named Thomas, who knows of her abilities. Thomas offers to explain the origin of Marianne's powers, as well as the meaning of the dream. However, he is only willing to talk if Marianne agrees to meet him at the Niwa Workers' Resort, an abandoned communist-era vacation resort in the Polish wilderness. The Resort had been shuttered by the government years earlier after an event called the Niwa Massacre, in which a large number of people were murdered and the survivors fled the area. While exploring Niwa, Marianne finds the place has strong ties to the spirit realm, and evidence that Thomas, the resort's manager, and his daughter Lilianne were at the epicentre of the Niwa Massacre. In the spirit world, she encounters Sadness, the spirit of a young girl who warns her of the Maw, a hostile and malevolent spirit that has managed to also partially exist in the real world. The Maw was responsible for the Niwa Massacre by occupying human hosts and using their bodies to murder others, and begins hunting down Marianne to sate its hunger and escape Niwa. Marianne repeatedly offers to send Sadness to her peace, but she refuses. Through her visions, Marianne finds out that Sadness is the spirit of Lilianne, who was molested by Thomas' older and trusted friend Richard. Marianne pieces together enough clues to learn that Thomas was also a medium, and due to this was experimented on by Nazis and Soviets, who found out that his powers could be used to sever people's minds from their bodies. Eventually Thomas fled back to Poland, hiding at Niwa and starting a family, but an agent of Służba Bezpieczeństwa named Henry discovered him. Henry subdued Thomas and forced him to watch as he set fire to Thomas' home with his children inside, causing Thomas to attack and murder him. Marianne comes to realize that she is Thomas' youngest daughter, having fallen into a coma after the fire, and that Thomas left her at the hospital while he remained with Lilianne at Niwa. Marianne discovers a fallout bunker hidden beneath the ruins of her family home where she encounters Thomas' spirit half. He explains to Marianne that Lilianne had trouble controlling her own powers, so Thomas kept her confined in the bunker. However, this did not stop Lilianne's powers from going out of control, and after she was raped by Richard, she created the Maw as the manifestation of her tormented soul. Eventually the Maw broke out of the bunker and caused the Niwa Massacre. While Thomas' spirit half is confident that Thomas would never hurt Lilianne, he is unaware of Thomas' current whereabouts. As the Maw approaches, Thomas' spirit half assures Marianne that she is the only one that can end this, and sends her off, preparing to sacrifice himself to delay the Maw. Still troubled over Lilianne's fate, Marianne leaves the bunker and heads for the lake that she saw in her dreams. There, she encounters Lilianne, who explains that the dream Marianne has been seeing is not a memory of the past, but a vision of the future. She then hands Marianne a gun and pleads with her to kill her, as the Maw cannot be banished as long as she is alive; explaining why Sadness, her spirit, refused to be sent off to peace. Marianne hesitates, and, considering Thomas' words, threatens to kill herself instead, as without her as a medium, the Maw will remain trapped in Niwa forever. The Maw then arrives, forcing Marianne to fire, but it is left unclear as to whom she shoots. In a post-credits scene, a man is seen wandering the spirit world, stopping briefly to pick up Thomas' pocketwatch.The Medium was developed by Bloober Team,[3] with lead designer Wojciech Piejko and producer Jacek Zieba coming up with the idea in 2012.[8] The core concepts of the game had been about a medium and her abilities to see two worlds simultaneously.[9] Piejko said The Medium imparts the message that "there is no universal truth".[4]They had chosen Poland during the 1990s, following its transition from a communistic to a democratic government in 1989, as the game's setting, as the nation's history represented the nature of duality, an overarching theme of the game.[6] Aware that the post-war era as well as the more recent democratic era were not well known to an international audience, part of Bloober Team's goal was to make the setting approachable to the wide audience, and covered both aspects of these parts of Poland's history within the game.[6] They recognized that with the success of their prior game Observer as well as interest in television shows about the Eastern Bloc such as Chernobyl and Dark, the Polish setting would be of interest to players.[6] The Soviet-era Hotel Niwa is based on a one-to-one rendition of the existing Hotel Cracovia located in Kraków.[10] The opening apartments at the start of the game, while based on a real building in Kraków, is an Easter egg to Observer: System Redux, where the same building is also present in that game's future setting.[10] They modelled the supernatural setting after Zdzisław Beksiński's dystopian surrealist artwork.[8] Audio for the game was made by a "Silent Hill dream team" according to Bloober Team,[10] including Silent Hill series composer Akira Yamaoka, singer Mary Elizabeth McGlynn,[11] and voice actor Troy Baker;[12][13] Yamaoka was persuaded to take on the music when Piejko gave him a gameplay demonstration.[14] Yamaoka and composer Arkadiusz Reikowski were tasked with scoring the physical and spiritual plane, respectively.[3][14] Using synthesiser and analogue sounds, Reikowski likened his approach to that of Stranger Things and Chernobyl.[15] Baker voices the primary antagonist, known as the Maw, for whom another actor performed the motion capture on stilts.[12] Actor Kelly Burke provided the voice for protagonist Marianne, with Weronika Rosati and Marcin Dorociński providing design and motion capture for Marianne and Thomas within the game.[10] The developers had planned out the camera and actor's direction for motion capture prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it easy to complete the motion capture sessions under COVID-19 regulations during 2020. Overall, the game has about 90 minutes of motion capture.[10][6] While the game takes place in Poland, Bloober Team specifically chose to have the characters speak with American Mid-Atlantic accents as to make the game approachable. After deciding to have Marianne exist in both the real and spirit world as to handle the situation with collisions, they found initial playtesters had difficulty maneuvering in this view, often twice going over an area to first focus on one world's view and then to focus on the other. They took cues from Japanese horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil which used fixed cameras and third-person perspective to better present the game for players to see both worlds at the same time while capturing the spirit of these horror games.[9] This also helped to enhance the player's immersion in the game.[4] They maintained this split-screen concept in cutscenes as well, though frequently switching up camera angles. This partially was used to mask unrendered details in some settings, but was also used to keep a sense of unease as when Marianne has a conversation with characters in the spirit world, while her real self is shown interacting with nothing.[9]

Metro 2033 is a 2010 first-person shooter survival horror video game developed by 4A Games and published by THQ. The story is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel of the same name, where survivors of a nuclear war have taken refuge in the Metro tunnels of Moscow. Players control Artyom, a man who must save his home station from the dangers lurking within the Metro. In the game, players encounter human and mutant enemies, who can be killed with a variety of firearms. Players must also wear a gas mask to explore areas covered in fallout radiation, both underground and on the surface. Metro 2033 was the debut title for 4A Games, whose founders had experience working on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl at GSC Game World. Glukhovsky chose 4A Games to adapt his novel due to the studio's location in Ukraine, and their expertise in developing first-person shooters. Glukhovsky gave the studio a lot of creative freedom. 4A Games focused their efforts on storytelling and atmosphere, intentionally avoiding any multiplayer gameplay to achieve their goal. The game was powered by the studio's own proprietary 4A Engine. It was first announced in 2006 as Metro 2033: The Last Refuge. The game was released in March 2010 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360. Critics gave the game positive reviews, with praise for its horror elements, detailed environments, and interesting plot. However, the game was also criticized for its bugs and artificial intelligence. Metro 2033 was profitable for THQ, selling more than 1.5 million copies by June 2012, though the publisher felt that their marketing efforts were rushed. The sequel Metro: Last Light was released in 2013, with Deep Silver acquiring the publishing rights from THQ after their bankruptcy. A compilation of both titles was released in 2014 as Metro Redux for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A third instalment, Metro Exodus, was released in 2019. Metro 2033 is a first-person shooter video game.[1] It is predominantly set within the tunnels of the Moscow Metro, though some sections take place on the surface, in the ruins of Moscow.[2] The story is told through a linear single-player campaign,[3] and important plot moments are shown during cutscenes.[4] The human and mutant enemies can be killed with a variety of firearms. The game features traditional guns like a revolver, assault rifles and shotguns, as well as more inventive weapons like a pneumatic crossbow.[5] In firefights, human enemies take cover and flank the player, while mutant enemies stay in the open and try to bite them.[6] Alternatively, the player can employ stealth to evade their enemies or kill them silently.[7] This can be achieved by using a throwing knife to kill an enemy from afar, or shooting an enemy with a suppressed weapon.[8] The player can recover health by waiting for it to regenerate, or by using a med-kit to heal themselves immediately.[3] The game features a minimalistic heads-up display (HUD). Gameplay information is presented to the player via audio and visual cues. For instance, players must inspect their weapons to see if they are about to run out of ammunition and therefore have to reload.[9] Since the game has a large survival horror focus, the player often has little ammunition, and must scavenge for supplies from caches or dead bodies.[3] An essential supply is pre-war 5.45×39mm ammunition (referred to in the game as "military grade ammunition"), which is also the main currency in the tunnels.[3] This ammunition can be traded for weapons and upgrades, or used directly as stronger bullets than other scavenged ammunition.[10][11] As most of the tunnels feature little to no light, the player can use a flashlight to explore dark areas.[3] However, the flashlight needs to be charged with a battery charger in order to stay effective.[12] The player must also use a gas mask to explore areas affected by radiation, both underground and on the surface.[8] The gas mask can be damaged in combat, which forces the player to find a replacement.[6] The player's survival also depends on constantly replacing their air filter,[13] which they can monitor by inspecting Artyom's wristwatch.[12] Throughout the game, there are certain moral choices that can be made. If the player is compassionate to the people living in the tunnels, such as giving the homeless some military grade ammunition, they may be able to watch a different cutscene at the end of the game. These moral choices are never explicitly mentioned, and it is possible to play through the game without knowing of their presence.[14] Setting Metro 2033 takes place in the city of Moscow, Russia 20 years after a global nuclear holocaust in 2013. Moscow has become a wasteland filled with killer mutants and irradiated air and is uninhabitable for humans without protective gear. The surviving population now lives in the Moscow Metro, which is described as a labyrinth of railways, tunnels, and bunkers.[15] Inside the metro, food, water, and supplies are scarce which lead to the formation of factions; Most notably the "Hanza," the "Red Line," and the "Rangers of the Order." The metro is dilapidated, with some places even requiring a universal charger in order to activate certain gates or switches. Other areas of the metro are also irradiated and filled with water or debris. Some areas contain anomalies or the supernatural which can cause psychic damage towards those that approach those areas. On the surface, the city is desolate, air and water are contaminated with radiation, and nearly everything is covered in ice and snow. While uninhabitable to humans, the surface is home to many mutants, especially the Dark Ones. The overall tone that the game tries to encapture is a grim and melancholic feeling, as well as displaying the miserable lives of people who've survived the great war. Plot In 2013, nuclear war devastated the Earth, wiping out billions of lives. Among the affected nations is Russia, including the now-desolate wasteland of Moscow. A handful of survivors manage to hide in the Metro system, salvaging spare parts and growing mushrooms for food. Animals such as rats or bears have mutated into horrific monsters, while the air in many areas becomes heavily irradiated and impossible to survive in without a gas mask. There is a constant state of war between Stalinists and Nazis, while opportunistic bandits seize hostages and supplies in the metro tunnels. The Rangers emerge as a neutral peacekeeping force within the Metro. By 2033, the northern station of VDNKh, now called Exhibition, is attacked by mysterious creatures called the Dark Ones. An elite Ranger named Hunter asks for support from a 24-year-old survivor named Artyom (Russian: Артём), the adopted son of the station commander. Before leaving to track the Dark Ones, Hunter gives Artyom his dog tags and tells him to present them to his superiors in Polis, the "capital" of the Metro. The next day, Artyom signs on as a guard for a caravan headed to Riga, a neighboring station. Along the way, the crew is incapacitated by a psychic attack, but Artyom is not affected. After the caravan reaches safety, Artyom meets Bourbon, a smuggler who offers to take him to Polis. The two make their way through several stations and tunnels, and even pass through the surface of Moscow itself, before Bourbon is killed by bandits. A traveler named Khan then rescues Artyom. After escorting Artyom through haunted tunnels and an embattled station, Khan advises Artyom to meet his contact Andrew the Blacksmith, who lives under the control of the Red Line, a Stalinist regime. With Andrew's help, Artyom sneaks out of Red Line territory but is subsequently captured by their enemies, the neo-Nazi Fourth Reich. Artyom is rescued from execution by two Rangers, Pavel and Ulman, before Pavel eventually dies escorting Artyom out of Reich territory. Now travelling alone, Artyom comes across a group of survivors trying to stop a mutant horde from reaching Polis. Although they fail, Artyom manages to rescue a young boy before they escape, and the defenders help Artyom reach the surface. There he reunites with Ulman, who takes him to meet Miller, the colonel of the Rangers in Polis. The Polis governing council ultimately refuses to help Exhibition. But Miller tells Artyom his back-up plan: a missile silo known as D6 that could destroy the Dark Ones' hive in the Botanical Gardens. To find a way to D6, Miller tells Artyom to meet him at the Moscow State Library to search for a map. As he makes his way to the library, Artyom is forced to continue alone while avoiding mutants. He eventually finds a map and flees with the help of both Miller and Ulman. They recruit Artyom as a Ranger, who joins an operation to locate and reactivate the D6 command center. After their success, Artyom and Miller climb Ostankino Tower to install a laser guidance system. Soon after, Artyom experiences a vivid hallucination induced by a Dark One. After the hallucination, there are two possible endings depending on the player's choices throughout the game. In the canonical ending, Artyom allows the missiles to fire, destroying the Dark Ones. The alternate ending gives Artyom the choice to destroy the laser guidance device, citing a last-minute realization that the Dark Ones were using the hallucinations to make peaceful contact. This ending is only available if the player has performed certain compassionate acts, such as helping fellow humans and not fleeing the Dark Ones in various hallucinations.Metro 2033 was developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games, founded around 2005. The founders had worked at GSC Game World, previously Ukraine's only major game studio, and creators of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. After the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Andrew Prokhorov left GSC due to disagreements with management, helping to found 4A Games as director. GSC's chief executive officer also fired the entire art team after S.T.A.L.K.E.R was released, and nearly all employees came to work at 4A.[16] The game is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel of the same name.[17] Glukhovsky was inspired by the books of Roger Zelazny and Ray Bradbury, as well as the first Fallout game.[18] Years before Glukhovsky was offered a book publishing deal in 2005, he uploaded the manuscript of the novel to his personal website, leading a number of game studios to approach him for a potential adaptation of his work.[17] Glukhovsky was open-minded about studios creating new chapters in his Metro series, describing this as "as much of an honor as getting the book screened and turned into a movie", and hoping that this would grow the audience for his fiction.[19] He also felt that a game adaptation would allow him to focus on other projects, leaving the Metro universe in the careful custody of other artists.[17] Glukhovsky ultimately chose 4A Games because they shared an "Eastern European mindset", both having a first-hand understanding of the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was also impressed with the team's previous work, as well as their pitch to adapt Metro as a first-person shooter, since the book reveals the thoughts of the protagonists (though it is written in the third-person).[17] Glukhovsky gave 4A a lot of creative freedom, while ensuring that the game was true to his story, themes, and meaning, even rewriting the dialog for the Russian version of the game. According to Glukhovsky, the main theme of Metro 2033 is xenophobia, particularly the human reaction to the mysterious Dark Ones. Glukhovsky also saw it as a coming of age story for protagonist Arytom, as a young man trying to find the meaning of his life.[20] The game does feature political satire and social criticism, particularly about modern Russia, but this was not intended as the game's focus.[21] The game differs from the book by offering two endings, which Glukhovsky felt was an interesting choice to give the player.[19] The game utilizes 4A Engine, a proprietary game engine developed by 4A Games. It was developed by programmers Oles Shishkovtsov and Oleksandr Maksimchuk, who had previously worked on the X-Ray engine for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.[22] Grygorovych accused 4A Games of using the pre-release versions of the X-Ray engine, but Shishkovtsov responded by refuting this. First, the GSC engine did not work on home consoles, whereas the 4A Engine was designed with this in mind. Shishkovtsov also described how the 4A Engine began as a pet project due to his frustrations with the X-Ray engine, before expanding his project with the 4A Games team.[23][22] The studio's goal was to focus on atmosphere and story, having been largely inspired by Half-Life 2.[24] They hoped that their narrative focus would help the game stand out from other post-apocalyptic titles like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Fallout.[25] According to producer Huw Beynon, their aim was for every scene to contribute to the game's narrative, describing this as "cinematic".[26] Since it was not practical to turn every major plot point into a cutscene, the studio instead strove to create an immersive atmosphere by using both environmental storytelling and incidental conversations. For instance, non-playable characters have their own daily routines and frequently gossip with each other.[17] The team also included a lot of quieter non-combat moments, to improve the game's variety, pacing, and sense of discovery.[20] The team decided to keep the HUD minimalistic, to keep the player immersed in the game world with fewer distractions.[20] Instead, the game puts many of its cues in the environment, such as the player viewing their objectives by physically opening Artyom's journal.[27] The team also focused their resources exclusively on the single-player experience, deliberately avoiding any multiplayer component.[20]Release and marketing In August 2006, 4A Games first announced the game as Metro 2033: The Last Refuge, for both PC and PlayStation 3.[28] THQ's Dean Sharpe saw early footage of the game at a trade show, incidentally around the time that Sharpe was also promoting S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Sharpe was impressed with 4A's work and convinced THQ to become their publisher, which later led him to join 4A Games as CEO.[29] THQ officially announced the partnership in October 2009, revealing the now-renamed game Metro 2033 for both PC and Xbox 360.[30] The decision to skip PlayStation 3 was a business decision for THQ, and not a technical limitation.[31] Metro 2033 was marketed on Steam by offering Red Faction: Guerrilla with pre-orders.[32] THQ also released a Limited Edition for the game, including the game disc, four art cards, and a replica of an in-game automatic shotgun.[33] The game was released on 16 March 2010 in North America, and 19 March 2010 in Europe.[34] Immediately after the game's release, the studio announced that it had begun developing downloadable content for Metro 2033.[35] The content was later revealed to as the "Ranger pack", which added two new weapons, as well as a Ranger mode that removed the HUD, and reduced the ammunition supply while boosting damage. The pack was released on 3 August 2010.[36] Reflecting on the game a year after release, THQ's Vice-President Danny Bilson admitted that the game was not "properly supported in all areas", singling out problems with product development and marketing. Bilson also described the game as "an orphan stepchild", as the publishing agreement with 4A Games was signed late in development, leaving less time to properly market the title before release.[37] Redux On 22 May 2014, a Redux version of the game was announced, featuring updates to the 4A Engine from the development of the sequel, Metro: Last Light. This led to graphical changes such as improved lighting, animations, and particle effects, as well as dynamic weather. This also allowed gameplay changes from Last Light, including improved controls, combat, stealth mechanics, and artificial intelligence. This also added Last Light features to 2033, such as silent takedowns, customized weapons, and the ability to wipe gas masks.[38] The Redux version was released on 26 August 2014 in North America, and 29 August 2014 in Europe for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[39] The re-release also led to a compilation package with both 2033 and Last Light, under the cumulative title of Metro Redux.[40] The redux versions of the two games were published by Deep Silver. A demo of the Redux version, which allows players to play through the first one-third of the game, was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 2 June 2015.[41] Metro Redux was later released for the Nintendo Switch on 28 February 2020.[42]Metro 2033 received favorable reviews from critics upon release, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[43][44] Most critics agreed that the game was a compelling and engrossing experience undermined by inadequate gameplay systems and poor artificial intelligence.[6][45][50][51][47] The game's story and pacing received acclaim from critics. Phil Kollar from Game Informer praised the main campaign's variety of scenarios and set-pieces, especially the climax of the game's story.[11] Eurogamer's Jim Rossignol also liked the campaign's variety and cinematic sequences, highlighting how "the action is expertly punctuated with unexpected experiences".[8] Justin McElroy from Joystiq also liked the story, praising the characters as likeable for their courage and resilience.[49] IGN's Ryan Clements felt that the game included "interesting sights and sounds", that the game suffered from bland characters and a "clumsy" story.[1] Jim Sterling from Destructoid felt that the story was "decent" and the themes were "intruiging" and "powerful", but expressed disappointment that it was not as fleshed out as the source materials.[3] GamePro's Tae K. Kim felt that there was not enough context for an otherwise strong backstory, as he "never fully understood the world", making the game an awkward entry point to the fiction of the novel.[46] The atmosphere was often considered one of the game's highlights. Matthew Pellett from GamesRadar described the setting as "evocative", and compared the game favourably to BioShock and Half-Life 2.[48] Writing for GameSpot, Chris Waters praised the atmosphere as "oppressive", and that the "relentless gloom can begin to wear you down".[5] The dialogue between non-playable characters was often praised for making the game world more immersive.[11][5][8][3] McElroy highlighted details such as the wristwatch and battery pump for adding to the sense of immersion.[49] Rossignol described the game world as one that is "heaving with apocalyptic detail", and praised the gas masks for inducing a "claustrophobic feeling".[8] Sterling felt that the game's unforgiving gameplay also facilitated players immersion. He added that 2033 was "one of the most traditional survival horrors to be seen in years", as players must survive the tunnels with a bare minimum of resources, making the experience more intense and frightening.[3] Kim also praised the 4A Engine for "bringing this desolate and sad world to life", and applauded the developers' effort to interweave gameplay with the narrative.[46] Tom Orry from VideoGamer.com also applauded the game for its visuals and immersion, but criticized the game's linearity and loading screens.[50] Critics had more mixed opinions for the gameplay. Waters praised the game for rewarding players for exploration, as well as the game's diversity of weapons.[5] However, Kollar felt that the weapons were not interesting enough.[11] Rossignol liked the scarce ammunition and survivalist elements of combat, but felt that the inaccuracy of the aiming system was frustrating.[8] Kollar agreed that the aiming and the control was too loose.[11] Sterling also analyzed the combat, expressing that it was better as a survival game than an action game.[3] Sterling and Clements criticized the stealth mechanics for bugs,[3][1] with McElroy remarking that enemies become invincible during certain animations.[49] Reviewers also criticized the game's artificial intelligence,[49] as well as the game's lack of replay value.[6][11] Sales Metro 2033 was the fifth best-selling retail game in the UK in its week of release, beaten by fellow new release God of War III and titles including Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Final Fantasy XIII and Just Dance.[52] THQ described the game as "very profitable" for the company. CEO for THQ, Brain Farrell, added that due to the low cost of development in Eastern Europe, modest level of sales would already guarantee Metro 2033 as a commercial success. The game was significantly more popular in Europe than North America.[53] In June 2012, it was revealed that the game had sold more than 1.5 million copies.[54] While the exact sales of the game have not been revealed, Deep Silver announced that the Metro Redux collection sold more than 1.5 million copies in April 2015.[55] Sequels

Mafia II is a 2010 action-adventure game developed by 2K Czech and published by 2K. It was released on August 24, 2010 for PlayStation 3, Windows, and Xbox 360.[1][2] The game is a standalone sequel to 2002's Mafia,[3] and the second installment in the Mafia series. Set within the fictional city of Empire Bay from 1945 to 1951, the story follows Vito Scaletta, a young Sicillian-American mobster and war veteran, who becomes caught in a power struggle among the city's Mafia crime families while attempting to pay back his father's debts and secure a better lifestyle. The game is played from a third-person perspective and its world is navigated on foot or by vehicle. The player character's criminal activities may incite a response from law enforcement agencies, measured by a "wanted" system that governs the aggression of their response. Development began in 2003, soon after the release of the first Mafia game. Upon release, Mafia II received positive reviews, with praise particularly directed at its story, characters, and gameplay; however, the restrictive world design and lack of certain features present in other sandbox games were criticized. A version of the game including all previously released downloadable content, entitled Mafia II: Director's Cut, was released by Feral Interactive in December 2011.[4] A sequel, Mafia III, developed by 2K Czech's successor Hangar 13, was published in October 2016. To coincide with the remake of the first game of the series, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, a remastered version of the game developed by D3T, was released by 2K Games on 19 May 2020, to mixed critical reception.[5] This Definitive Edition was later bundled in the Mafia: Trilogy, released on 25 September 2020.Mafia II is an action-adventure game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. Most of the game is set in the fictional city of Empire Bay, based on New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and Detroit, during the mid-1940s and early 1950s.[6][7][8][9][10] The core gameplay revolves around shooting and driving; a limited melee combat system is also included, which combines punching and dodging. There are 50 era-accurate vehicles in the game as well as licensed music.[11] Depending on the weather during the course of the game, vehicles handle differently. For example, during the early chapters in winter, vehicles are more likely to slip on the road due to the ice. Many firearms from the previous game return, such as the Thompson submachine gun and Colt 1911, as well as a pump-action shotgun. New World War II–era weapons, such the MG 42 and the Beretta Model 38, also appear in the game. Interacting with objects in the environment involves two action buttons: a standard action and a "violent" action, used in context-sensitive situations; for example, when stealing a car, the player may choose to either pick its lock or break the window glass. For example, if the player is riding in a car and a cutscene starts, the player will be driving the same car with the same condition (damaged or intact) and will be wearing the same clothes.[13] There are exceptions, however, such as the opening sequence and a cutscene in the tenth chapter, which are pre-rendered video clips. The game features three different in-game radio stations (Empire Central Radio, Empire Classic Radio and Delta Radio) with licensed music, news, and commercials. The radio stations include music from different genres including rock and roll, big band, rhythm and blues, and doo-wop, with licensed songs by Chuck Berry, The Everly Brothers, Dean Martin, Little Richard, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Bing Crosby, Bill Haley & His Comets, The Chordettes, Ritchie Valens, Bo Diddley, Ricky Nelson, Eddie Cochran, The Champs, The Drifters, The Fleetwoods, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Nat King Cole, The Chords, and The Andrews Sisters. Setting Set nearly a decade after the first game, Mafia II takes place between two distinct time periods – 1945 and 1951 – within the fictional U.S. city of Empire Bay; the game's first chapter takes place in the fictional town of San Celeste in Sicily, while the sixth is set within a prison located outside Empire Bay. The city is situated on the United States' eastern coastline and divided by a river, and consists of several districts, including wealthy suburbs, slums and tenement blocks for the city's different immigrant races, including Irish, African-American, Chinese, and Italian, and large-scale industrial complexes, with the city supported by a large port, a railroad station, a major prison outside its city limits, several parks, and a collection of shopping malls and supermarkets. The game's main story sees the city divided between a number of criminal outfits, including three mafia families — the Falcone family, Vinci family, and Clemente family — a Chinese Triad outfit, the Irish Mob, and several street gangs. The city's design, including the architectural styles, cultures, public transportation and landmarks, are influenced by various real-life American cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Detroit, from within the two respective time periods used in the game. Two of the game's DLC packs, The Betrayal of Jimmy and Jimmy's Vendetta, also take place in the early 1950s, but in a different canon from the base game, while the third, Joe's Adventures, is set during the events of the main storyline, bridging the gap between the two time periods. Plot In 1943, Sicilian immigrant Vito Scaletta is arrested during a robbery and opts to join the United States Army to avoid prison time, being enlisted in the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Vito first experiences the power of the Mafia when an operation in Sicily goes awry, and Don Calò arrives, ordering the Italian soldiers to stand down. In February 1945, Vito returns home on leave to Empire Bay and reunites with his childhood friend and accomplice Joe Barbaro, who has joined the Clemente crime family in his absence. Joe supplies Vito with counterfeit discharge papers and introduces him to some of his contacts for work. Learning that his late father left the family in debt to a loan shark, Vito seeks work with his father's former employer, Derek Pappalardo, who has ties with the Mafia. Later, he carries out several jobs alongside Joe and Henry Tomasino, a Clemente made man, securing enough money to pay off his father's debt. However, Vito is arrested again, this time for the theft and sale of ration stamps, and sentenced to ten years in prison. While serving the time, Vito befriends Leo Galante, the consigliere of Don Frank Vinci, but learns from his sister Francesca that their mother died and all the money Vito had obtained was spent on her funeral. In April 1951, Vito is released early due to his connections to Leo. Reuniting with Joe, the pair work their way up the ranks of the Falcone family, led by Don Carlo Falcone and his underboss Eddie Scarpa. After several jobs, Vito and Joe become made men within Falcone's organization, allowing them to secure a better lifestyle. Learning that the Clementes are conducting drug operations against the traditions of the Commission, Carlo orders the pair to assassinate Don Alberto Clemente. Following the hit, Henry approaches Eddie through Vito in search of new employment and is ordered to kill Leo to prove himself. Although Vito manages to warn Leo in time and help him leave the city, the Falcones nonetheless welcome Henry into the family. Vito quickly finds his life falling into turmoil after Francesca distances herself from him because of his mobster lifestyle, and his house is destroyed in a firebombing by the Irish Mob. To rebuild his fortunes, Vito joins Joe and Henry to profit from the sale of heroin bought from the city's Triads. However, Carlo, who is also conducting drug operations behind the Commission's back, learns about this and demands a cut of their profits. When Vito and Joe go to meet with Henry to discuss the matter, they witness the Triads publicly executing him and escaping with their money. The pair pursue them, killing a high-ranking Triad lieutenant in the process, but fail to retrieve the money. Indebted to loan shark Bruno Levine, whose money they borrowed for the heroin deal, Vito and Joe take on various jobs to raise money, including the assassination of retired mobster Tommy Angelo. When Vito visits Derek in search of work, he discovers that the latter ordered his father's death, and kills him in revenge. Meanwhile, the Vinci family kidnaps and tortures Joe. Vito manages to save him, but the pair learn that their actions have sparked a war between the Mafia and the Triads. After paying off the debt to Bruno, revealed to be the same loan shark his father was indebted to, Vito is called by Carlo to the planetarium for a meeting. On the way there, Leo picks him up and chastises him for the problems he caused, before confirming that Henry was a federal informant and that Carlo wants to kill Vito for vouching for him. However, grateful to Vito for previously saving his life, Leo has arranged for him to be spared by both the Commission and the Triads as long as he kills their common enemy: Carlo. At the planetarium, Vito discovers that Carlo offered to make Joe a caporegime if he killed him. However, Joe refuses and helps Vito kill Carlo. Outside, the pair are greeted by Leo, who takes Vito with him to celebrate, while Joe is driven off in a separate car. When Vito asks where Joe is being taken, Leo reveals that he was not part of their deal, leaving Vito to watch helplessly as his friend is taken away to whatever fate awaits him. Development Preliminary work on Mafia II began in 2004; the work on the script began in 2003. Originally intended for a PlayStation 2 and Xbox release, the game was moved to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2005, following difficulties with the developer of the game engine. It was officially revealed in August 2007 at the Leipzig Games Convention. A playable version of the game was achieved in 2007 or 2008.[14] Mafia II was expected to release in late 2009, but was delayed until its release in August 2010. 2K Czech wrote a new engine for the game which was named the “Illusion engine”. The new engine was the successor to the IS' LS3D engine which was used to make the first Mafia game.[15] A promotional trailer was released for the game in August 2007. A second trailer was released on the Spike VGA show on 14 December 2008.[16] An extended version of the trailer was released on 15 January with an extra 30 seconds of cut scene footage.[17] The first gameplay footage debuted on GameSpot on 17 April 2009 as part of an interview with Mafia II's producer, Denby Grace.[18] The video shows driving and gunplay aspects to gameplay as well as portraying the physics engine. A third trailer was uploaded to the website on 28 May 2009. From 1 June 2009, four short videos are to be added to the Mafia II website. The first of these is called "The Art of Persuasion" and features the song "Mercy, Mr Percy" by the female singer Varetta Dillard. Another video was released featuring footage from the mission "The Buzzsaw". The video reveals the fate of "The Fat Man" who appeared in the earlier trailers.[19] On 27 March 2010, a new trailer was released showcasing the PhysX-based cloth and physics system used in the game.[20] On 3 August 2010, Sheridyn Fisher, the face of Playboy Swim 2010, became the official ambassador for Mafia II. Sheridyn's involvement with Mafia II highlights the agreement between 2K Games and Playboy magazine to use 50 of their vintage covers and Centerfolds in Mafia II as part of the in-game collectibles integration.[21] A demo for the game was released on 10 August 2010 on Steam, Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network.[22] Release Mafia II was released on 24 August 2010 in North America, 26 August in Australia, and 27 August internationally.[23] On 22 August 2015, digital sales of the PC version of Mafia II were suspended on Steam and other digital retailers for unexplained reasons. The game was restored to Steam on 1 June 2016.[24] Pre-order bonuses On 26 May 2010 four content packs were offered as pre-order bonuses in America and European countries, each one available through different retailers. The Vegas Pack containing two additional cars and suits for Vito and the War Hero Pack containing two military-style vehicles and suits was available from GameStop and EBGames. The Renegade Pack containing two sports cars and two jackets was available from Amazon and the Greaser Pack featuring two hot-rods and two suits were available to Best Buy customers.[25] These pre-order packs are available for purchase as game add-ons on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and Steam. On 26 May 2010, a collector's edition was announced for Mafia II.[26] PlayStation 3 version The PlayStation 3 version became subject to controversy on 2K's Mafia II forums when 2K's interactive marketing manager Elizabeth Tobey stated that the PlayStation 3 version would be missing certain graphical details that were present in the Windows and Xbox 360 versions including three dimensional grass, pools of blood forming under dead bodies and realistic cloth physics.[27] These details were said to be present in earlier builds of the game, but had to be removed to increase the game's frame rate. Upon release, the PlayStation 3 version received the same or higher review scores than the Xbox 360 version from Destructoid and Nowgamer (sites that review the game on multiple platforms rather than the normal practice of reviewing a single platform) due to additional content.[28][29]Downloadable content Three downloadable content (DLC) packs were released for the game: The Betrayal of Jimmy is the first DLC pack, announced by Sony on 15 June 2010 at E3 2010.[30] It was initially released exclusively to the PlayStation 3 as a free add-on to the base game, before being later ported to the other platforms. Set in a different canon from the base game, the story follows a gun-for-hire named Jimmy, who works for several criminal syndicates to undermine their rivals, until he is eventually set up by his employers and arrested. Missions are structured in a non-linear manner (similarly to the Grand Theft Auto series), and include a score attack feature in which players earn points for doing certain actions; both features would return in the second and third DLC packs. This DLC also contains the exclusive Waybar Hot Rod vehicle. Jimmy's Vendetta is the second DLC pack for the game. Ford also talked about how The Duviri Paradox was surprisingly inspired by the ARAM mode in League of Legends, an idea that translates very nicely into Warframe thanks to the game's sizeable cast. Although The Duviri Paradox has roguelike systems, it's not intended to be as punishing or challenging as many popular roguelike games. Instead, the emphasis is on using roguelike mechanics to create a run-based gameplay loop that lets players grow increasingly powerful during the run. This is a hypercut of all the relevant story about Ganondorf in the Tears of the Kingdom. This includes cutscenes, relevant dialogue and some gameplay. The overall story is much more fleshed out here as opposed to Breath of the Wild, although still many-a-plothole. A child named Nicky Roth is chasing a ball down the street when he hears screams coming from his neighbor's house which belongs to Theodore Peterson. Nicky goes to investigate and witnesses Mr. Peterson locking someone in his basement. Nicky sneaks into the house, finds the key to the basement, and enters. He finds that Mr. Peterson has converted his basement into a makeshift underground dungeon, but finds no sign of any prisoner. Mr. Peterson then chases Nicky and locks him up in the dungeon, thus beginning Act 2. He manages to escape his cell and reach the surface, only to find that Mr. Peterson has erected a massive fence around his property to prevent escape. Nicky is forced to solve several puzzles to find a way to escape Mr. Peterson's property. Once he crosses the fence, he flees back to his home, and Mr. Peterson does not give chase.

The group, consisting of their leader Gerard (Dan Donohue), his lieutenant Tilda (Carrie-Anne Moss), enforcer Erik (Marc Kudisch), and accompanied by a clone of Sobeck named Beta (also voiced by Burch), possess advanced technology that renders them invulnerable. They take a second GAIA backup while Aloy barely escapes. Zo (Erica Luttrell), a member of the nearby Utaru tribe, guides Aloy to a control center where she rejoins GAIA with her subsystem MINERVA. GAIA locates the other subsystems, AETHER, DEMETER, and POSEIDON, and advises Aloy to retrieve them before attempting to capture the more advanced HEPHAESTUS. GAIA reveals the extinction signal that triggered HADES and mutated the subsystems originated from the Sirius system; Aloy suspects that the futuristic humans sent it. She later tracks down Beta, who informs Aloy that her group are, in fact, Far Zenith, an organization of billionaire colonists who fled Earth during its global extinction, having managed to extend their natural lifespans. After their colony on Sirius collapsed, the Zeniths returned to Earth to use GAIA through Beta's genetic make-up for their own recolonization. They already acquired subsystems ELEUTHIA, ARTEMIS, and APOLLO, but Beta has stolen their GAIA backup. Aloy recovers AETHER after helping Hekarro advance in the civil war and retrieves POSEIDON from the ruins of Las Vegas. Journeying to California, she encounters the Quen, a foreign tribe attempting to solve ecological crises in their homeland. Aloy helps tribe member Alva (Alison Jaye) acquire data while recovering DEMETER. After obtaining a high-level clearance from the private bunker-turned-tomb of a mutated Ted Faro (Lloyd Owen) in the ruins of San Francisco, Aloy helps GAIA to trap HEPHAESTUS but is attacked by the Zeniths. Erik kills Varl and recaptures Beta while Gerard steals GAIA, but Tilda double-crosses them and helps Aloy escape. Tilda explains that she was romantically involved with Elisabet Sobeck and regretted leaving her; having been inspired by Aloy, she wishes to stop Far Zenith. She further reveals that Sylens has been supporting the Tenakth rebels to use them against the Zeniths. Aloy refuses to sacrifice the Tenakth and instead defeats Regalla herself after thwarting the latter's final attack on Hekarro. Aloy and her companions assault Far Zenith's base, while Beta releases HEPHAESTUS into the Zeniths' network and it builds a near-endless amount of machines that tie down Far Zenith's army of drones. Sylens disables the Zeniths' personal defences, allowing Aloy and Zo to kill Erik, while Tilda kills Gerard. Aloy and Beta learn that the Far Zenith colony was destroyed by Nemesis, a failed mind uploading experiment they created; the Zeniths fled from Nemesis and hoped to steal GAIA to colonize a new planet. Nemesis also sent the extinction signal to Earth and is en route to destroy the planet. Tilda tries to force Aloy to abandon Earth with her, but Aloy refuses and is forced to kill Tilda. Sylens reveals that HADES told him about Nemesis and also plans to escape Earth, but has a change of heart and decides to aid Aloy against Nemesis. Aloy's companions disperse to spread the warning of Nemesis while Aloy and Beta reactivate GAIA. Burning Shores downloadable content Some time after the defeat of Far Zenith, Sylens warns Aloy that one Zenith member, aerospace magnate Walter Londra, remains unaccounted for. The last known sighting of Londra places him at a location to the south called the Burning Shores, the former site of Los Angeles. Upon arriving in the Burning Shores, Aloy meets a member of the Quen tribe, Seyka. Seyka agrees to guide Aloy to Londra's hideout on Starlight Rise (Griffith Observatory), in return for helping her disable a Zenith defense tower. Seyka takes Aloy to her settlement, Fleet's End, explaining that her fleet was separated from the main Quen expedition heading to San Francisco, shipwrecked on the Burning Shores, and have been stranded since. It is revealed that Seyka stole a deceased Diviner's Focus and found a clue that some crew that had gone missing are located at Starlight Rise. Admiral Gerrit allows Aloy and Seyka to pursue this lead since one of the missing crew is Seyka's sister and the fleet's last remaining navigator. Working together, Aloy and Sekya destroy the Tower and make their way to Starlight Rise. Upon reaching it, they discover signs that Londra has captured the missing Quen crew and has been forcing them to excavate his old headquarters. They find evidence of him retrieving data on a project called "MSP" and follow his trail north to the wreckage of a Horus war machine resting near the Hollywood Sign. They come across a Quen camp and are dismayed to see that the missing Quen crew have willingly joined Londra, worshipping him as a god who promises them "Ascension". They infiltrate Londra's Ascension Hall and discover that he is using the Horus to build a rocket to take him off the planet. However, in order to get the lift he needs, Londra salvaged experimental nuclear booster engines from the Starlight Rise but the use of them would irradiate the entire Burning Shore and its surrounding lands. After eliminating Londra's henchman Zeth, they learn he has taken a small number of his most loyal Quen, including Seyka's sister, to a nearby abandoned amusement park in preparation for their journey. Aloy and Seyka infiltrate the park and make contact with Londra's personal AI, Nova. Nova explains that Londra intends to use his rocket to take himself and a select few Quen and genetic library collected from his Quen followers to found a new colony away from the threat of Nemesis. However, to ensure that his followers will not betray him, Londra reactivated his Mutiny Suppression Protocol research, using it to brainwash Quen into being his loyal followers. Nova then deactivates Londra's security measures in return for Aloy deleting her so she can finally be free from Londra's constant tweaking of her personality matrix. They enter Londra's inner sanctum, where they find him ready to seduce Seyka's sister Kina. Seyka then intervenes, forcing Londra to flee back to his bunker underneath the Hollywood Sign. Londra activates the Horus and uses it to attack Aloy and Seyka, who sabotage its cooling system to weaken it and open a breach in its hull. Aloy then infiltrates the Horus and kills Londra. In the aftermath, Aloy sends all of the data from Londra's Focus to Sylens, and helps the Quen in Fleet's End make contact with Alva so they can coordinate on reuniting their fleets. Aloy also has an option of starting a romantic relationship with Seyka before temporarily parting ways. Upon returning to her base, Aloy meets with Sylens who has managed to decrypt some of Londra's data, finding a list of 21st century companies that were developing experimental weaponry that may be key to defeating Nemesis. The PlayStation 5 version sold 43,012 physical copies in Japan throughout the same week, making it the fourth bestselling retail game of the week in the country.[58] In May 2023, Sony announced that more than 8.4 million copies of the game had been sold as of April 16, 2023.[59]

Far Cry 5 is a 2018 first-person shooter, developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft. It is the successor to 2014's Far Cry 4, and the fifth main installment in the Far Cry series. Set in Hope County, a fictional region of Montana, United States, the game revolves around the Project at Eden's Gate, a doomsday cult that has taken over the county at the command of its charismatic and powerful leader, Joseph Seed. Players control an unnamed junior deputy sheriff who becomes trapped in Hope County and must work alongside various resistance factions to liberate the region from the despotic rule of the Seeds and Eden's Gate. Gameplay focuses on combat and exploration; players battle enemy soldiers and dangerous wildlife using a wide array of weapons. The game features many elements found in role-playing games, such as a branching storyline and side quests. The game also features a map editor, a co-operative multiplayer mode, and a competitive multiplayer mode. Announced in early 2017, development on Far Cry 5 was extensive. The team explored several concepts before settling on an American location. The game was heavily inspired by several socio-political events in modern history, such as the Cold War and the September 11 attacks. The development team sought to capture the despondent social climate after the events and re-purpose it for the game. Developed and published solely by Ubisoft, its competitive multiplayer mode was also created in-house, with the company's worldwide studios gaining more creative input for Far Cry 5. Far Cry 5 was released worldwide for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in March 2018. It received mostly positive reviews, although it was the subject of controversy after being announced alongside a period of heightened political conflicts. Critics praised the open world design, visuals, gameplay and soundtrack but directed criticisms towards its story and some of the characters. The game was a commercial success, becoming the fastest-selling title in the franchise by grossing over $310 million in its first week of sales and had sold over 10 million units by March 2020. Several releases of downloadable content were subsequently published. A spin-off title and sequel to the narrative, Far Cry New Dawn, was released in February 2019. A successor, Far Cry 6, was released in October 2021.Similar to its predecessors, Far Cry 5 is a first-person shooter set in an open world environment which the player can explore freely on foot or via various vehicles. Unlike previous titles in the series where the player takes on the role of a set character, the game gives the player the opportunity to customize their character's appearance.[1][2] While the player has a variety of ranged and explosive weapons to fight against enemies, the game places a renewed emphasis on close-quarters combat compared to previous Far Cry titles by introducing a wider range of melee weapons.[3] In addition, Far Cry 5 features a new weapons ballistics system that includes elements like bullet dropping over a distance to increase realism.[4] Creative director Dan Hay described the design of the open world as being modeled on the outposts from previous titles in the Far Cry series. These outposts represented a small section of the map occupied by enemy forces and the player was tasked with liberating them by killing or neutralizing the enemy presence. The outposts were designed with multiple approaches for the player to take and it was this element that the development team tried to recreate in the wider game world of Far Cry 5. The player is dropped into the game world with little context, direction or objective markers and is instead required to navigate the world on their own. Hay expressed a desire to create what he termed the "anecdote factory", a game where two players could venture out from the same point in opposite directions and have entirely different experiences that they would then share with one another anecdotally.[5] To assist with this, most of the game world is accessible to the player after completing the game's introductory missions and they are free to advance through these areas as they choose; by comparison, previous titles in the series gradually opened up the game world to the player with story missions guiding their progress through open areas. Completing actions within a region earns the player "Resistance Points" which cumulate to trigger major story events. These Resistance Points also contribute to the "Resistance Meter", which divides each region into three tiers representing the region's relative level of difficulty. For example, on entering a region for the first time, the player will encounter basic enemies; however, as the Resistance Meter increases, the player will run into a wider variety of enemy archetypes, culminating in aerial patrols and airborne assaults.The game also features a recruitment system in which the player can recruit locals in the county to fight alongside them similar to the "Buddy" system used in Far Cry 2 or the "Guns for Hire" system in Far Cry 4. In this Guns for Hire system, the player can recruit locals to join their cause at which point they will fight alongside the player. In addition to these Guns for Hire, the game includes "Specialists" or non-playable characters with their own unique skills and personalities. The recruitment system replaces the beacon system used in previous titles. For example, Far Cry 3 featured radio towers and Far Cry 4 featured bell towers that the player had to climb in order to open up parts of the map and various activities in the region. Far Cry 5 removed this system and instead relies on the player forging relationships with other characters to discover story missions, events and other characters.[6] The player has the ability to tame wild animals through the Specialists, which is based on a system that was previously introduced to the series in Far Cry Primal. The tamed wildlife assists the player in combat and follow the player's orders. Different wildlife have different combat patterns.[7] A fishing mechanic was also introduced and a variety of fish can be caught.[8] The campaign can be played individually or with a partner through the game's cooperative multiplayer mode known as "Friends for Hire".[9] Map maker and multiplayer Far Cry Arcade allows players to build and share small maps that have single player, two-player cooperative, and multiplayer objectives. Players are able to construct maps using assets from Far Cry 5 and its downloadable content, as well as Far Cry 4, Far Cry Primal, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Assassin's Creed: Unity.[10] While a separate mode from the main game, the Arcade mode can be accessed from arcade cabinets scattered around the game's map; successfully completing these maps can earn in-game money and other rewards for the main campaign. Setting and characters The game is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a preacher named Joseph Seed (portrayed by Greg Bryk)[11] has risen to prominence. Seed believes that he has been chosen by God to protect the people of Hope County from "the Collapse", a global catastrophe that will see the collapse of society, and to this end has established a congregation called the Project at Eden's Gate. This is to fulfill his mission of leading the people to salvation;[12] in reality, Seed is a radical preacher and Eden's Gate is a militaristic doomsday cult. Under his rule, Eden's Gate has used both coercion and violence to forcibly convert the residents of Hope County, and intimidation to keep them from contacting the outside world for help. Seed has assumed the title of "the Father" and maintains control over Hope County with the aid of the Heralds: Jacob, "the Soldier" (Mark Pellegrino), a former United States Army sniper and Joseph's older brother who oversees the training and deployment of the cult's armed soldiers; John, "the Baptist" (Seamus Dever), Joseph's younger brother and a lawyer who has been able to acquire much of the land in Hope County for Eden's Gate and who leads the forcible conversion of residents; and Rachel Jessop, also known as Faith or "the Siren" (Jenessa Grant), a botanist who acts as a pacifist to bring the people to trust in Joseph, but uses a powerful hallucinogen called Bliss to run forced labor camps for residents who resist the cult.[12] The Heralds have converted a series of decommissioned missile silos into fortified bunkers where they intend to wait out "the Collapse" with the cult's followers. The player takes on the role of a rookie sheriff's deputy—referred to as "the Deputy"—who is part of a task force sent to arrest Seed. The residents of Hope County opposed to Seed include a cast of characters who join the fight with motives ranging from altruism to revenge, profit, and boredom.[13][14] They are aided by Richard "Dutch" Roosevelt (John Tench), a local survivalist with a deep distrust of government and a history of anti-social behaviour. Characters from the Far Cry series who return in Far Cry 5 include Hurk Drubman, Jr. (Dylan Taylor), a dim-witted though well-intentioned redneck party boy with a love of high-powered explosives; and Willis Huntley (Alain Goulem), a sociopathic CIA agent and self-proclaimed "patriot bastard" in the habit of recruiting civilians for dangerous clandestine missions. In late 2018, a joint operation between the United States Marshals Service and the county sheriff's department—consisting of Deputy Marshal Cameron Burke (Doug Hutchison), Sheriff Earl Whitehorse (Christopher Heyerdahl) and his deputies Joey Hudson (Luisa D'Oliveira), Staci Pratt (Julian Bailey) and the player character, an unnamed Junior Deputy—arrive at an Eden's Gate church to detain Joseph Seed with a federal arrest warrant on charges of kidnapping with the intent to harm. Although Joseph offers no resistance, he claims that God will not allow him to be taken. As he is escorted away, cult members attack the task force and cause their helicopter to crash. Joseph escapes and commands the cult to capture the task force members.[12] The Deputy survives and escapes with the help of Richard "Dutch" Roosevelt, a local survivalist who explains that the cult has interpreted the attempt to arrest Joseph as the fulfillment of his prophecies. Believing the end of the world is upon them, they have begun "the Reaping", a concentrated effort to purge Hope County of non-believers and gather all material needs. As the county is now cut off from the outside world, Dutch tasks the Deputy with contacting the fledgling resistance scattered throughout Hope County to gather allies, rescue the task force and dismantle the cult's operations to erode the influence of Joseph and the Heralds. Although the Heralds focus their efforts on stopping the Deputy, they maintain an interest in recruiting them to their cause. Joseph's younger brother John lures the Deputy to Holland Valley by broadcasting a message showing Hudson as his captive. John indoctrinates residents to the cult's beliefs by subjecting them to a forced baptism to "cleanse" them, tattooing their "sins" onto their bodies, and carving out the marked skin as part of their "atonement". John captures the Deputy and concludes that their sin is Wrath. When the Deputy escapes, John retaliates by taking over the town of Fall's End where he forces the Deputy to confront him and atone for their sins. A counterattack by the local Resistance prompts John to flee, leading to the Deputy engaging him in an aerial dogfight and mortally wounding him. As he lies dying, John remarks that the Deputy will not save anyone and asserts that Joseph is right. The Deputy rescues Hudson and the captive survivors and destroys John's bunker. The Deputy arrives in the Whitetail Mountains to find the Whitetail Militia already at war with Joseph's older brother Jacob. Jacob recruits and trains the cult's members and keeps an indoctrinated Deputy Pratt captive. As part of their training, Jacob mentally conditions cult recruits with The Platters' song "Only You (And You Alone)", which he uses to trigger an altered state of consciousness in the recruits and carry out his commands. Jacob subjects the Deputy to the same conditioning and successfully breaks them. He has the Deputy kill militia leader Eli Palmer (Patrick Garrow) to cripple the resistance. The surviving militia hold Jacob responsible and the Deputy confronts him in the mountains. As he dies, Jacob reflects on how empires rise and fall, and predicts that America will suffer the same fate if it is not prepared. The Deputy retrieves Jacob's bunker key, rescues Pratt and floods the bunker. Faith, a collaborator and "sister" of the Seeds, oversees the production of Bliss in Henbane River. The hallucinatory effects of Bliss puts its victims in a trance-like state and staying under its influence for too long makes them vulnerable to Faith's hypnotic manipulation. The Deputy reunites with Whitehorse and joins the Cougars, based in the Hope County Jail. Whitehorse informs the Deputy that Burke has been captured and is now under the influence of the Bliss. The Deputy repeatedly encounters Faith, who attempts to persuade the Deputy to join her and live in paradise. The Deputy resists her and rescues Burke, unaware that he has been hypnotized. Burke kills Virgil Minkler, leader of the Cougars and Mayor of Fall's End, opens the jail to Eden's Gate, and kills himself. The Cougars suffer heavy losses repelling the cult and Whitehorse is captured. The Deputy kills Faith, and she warns them that Joseph is right about the end of the world, but the Deputy will decide what happens in the end. The Deputy rescues Whitehorse from Faith's bunker and destroys the production of Bliss.Killing his Heralds prompts Joseph to call the Deputy for a final confrontation at his church. He has captured the Deputy's allies from the resistance groups, hypnotized them with Bliss and is holding Whitehorse, Hudson, and Pratt hostage. Joseph offers the Deputy the option of walking away with their friends unharmed on the condition that they leave him and Eden's Gate alone.[15] Endings If the Deputy decides to walk away, Joseph forgives them and enters the church with the Deputy's hypnotized allies. The Deputy, Whitehorse, Pratt and Hudson leave in a truck, and Whitehorse assures them that they will return with the National Guard to help liberate Hope County from the cult. Whitehorse turns on the radio and "Only You" plays, triggering Jacob's brainwashing. The Deputy is once again put into a trance and the screen cuts to black. If the Deputy chooses to resist, Joseph forces the Deputy to fight and revive their hypnotized friends. Radio broadcasts throughout the game have suggested that the world outside Hope County is spiraling into chaos and a nuclear war is imminent.[16] These fears are realized when Joseph is apprehended and a nuclear bomb detonates in the distance. The Deputy, Whitehorse, Pratt and Hudson flee with the captured Joseph to Dutch's bunker. They crash their truck into a tree, which kills Whitehorse, Pratt, and Hudson. A freed Joseph carries the unconscious Deputy to the bunker. The Deputy awakens handcuffed to a bed with Dutch dead on the floor. Joseph laments the loss of his family and land and asserts this is "the Collapse" that he had prophesied. He tells the Deputy that with the loss of his family, that they are all he has left and that they are family now. This ending leads into the spin-off Far Cry New Dawn.[15][16] A secret ending can be found at the beginning of the game. The Deputy decides to not arrest Joseph during their first encounter. Whitehorse, who was against apprehending him head-on because of the probability of being ambushed and killed, lowers Joseph's hands and orders the group to leave. Despite Burke's protests, Whitehorse asserts that it is "better to leave well enough alone" and that no one would be alive if they arrested Joseph.Downloadable content Promotion of Dead Living Zombies at PAX West 2018 Prior to the game's release, Ubisoft announced to release three episodes of downloadable content titled Hours of Darkness, Lost on Mars and Dead Living Zombies. Each episode tells a stand-alone story focusing on a secondary character from the main campaign. Hours of Darkness takes place during the height of the Vietnam War. The player takes on the role of Wendell Redler (Billy MacLellan), a door gunner known by the call-sign Python 2-5. Python's helicopter is shot down while on a mission to scout the positions of North Vietnamese forces in a wide jungle valley. He is taken captive by the North Vietnamese Army, but escapes during an airstrike. He recovers a radio from the downed helicopter and is instructed to cross the valley to an extraction point. What started as a reconnaissance mission becomes a rescue mission as Python locates his squadmates Joker, Moses and Yokel (Alex Weiner). As he ventures through enemy territory, Python frees South Vietnamese prisoners of war, sabotages anti-aircraft batteries, kills North Vietnamese commanders and survives the spraying of Agent Orange. When they arrive at the extraction point, Python and his squadmates fight off waves of soldiers as they wait for the helicopters. The survivors are safely extracted and flown out of the valley. Lost on Mars focuses on Nick Rye (Steve Byers). Nick is teleported to Mars where he meets the disembodied head of Hurk Drubman, Jr. Hurk reveals that he had Nick teleported for a mission to save Earth after Hurk himself failed. Nick is introduced to ANNE (Erica Lindbeck), a millennia-old artificial intelligence who warns that a hostile alien race called the Arachnids are putting together the final preparations for an invasion of Earth. With no way to get home, Nick is enlisted to restore power to ANNE, allowing her to build her defences and thwart the invasion. Hurk is given a robotic body to assist in the mission and asks Nick to locate his missing body parts. Nick grows suspicious of ANNE's intentions while experiencing a series of apocalyptic visions involving his newborn daughter and Hope County. The two manage to fully restore power to ANNE, but doing so allows her to ready her own invasion of earth as she sees humans as inferior lifeforms. They fight both her robots and clones of Hurk made from his re-assembled body. They successfully shut ANNE down at the expense of Hurk's body. Nick and the robotic Hurk return to Earth, where they are celebrated as heroes. Dead Living Zombies follows Guy Marvel (Giles Panton), an auteur film director who has a reputation for being impossible to work with. The style and tone of Dead Living Zombies are very different to the main story campaign and other downloadable content episodes, relying on parody, meta-humour and irreverence over plot. It recounts Marvel's career and how he wound up in Montana during the Eden's Gate incident. The early days of Marvel's career see him accosting established directors with unsolicited pitches for zombie films. While the directors try to see the merits of his projects, it quickly becomes apparent that they are gratuitously violent with little plot or character development and the directors lose interest. Marvel tries to adapt his pitches based on the feedback he receives, but is told that his films should "say something about society". He becomes frustrated when a director tries to seize creative control over pitch for a global warming-themed zombie film. Realizing that he has been approaching the wrong kind of director, he finds some success when a studio picks up his idea for a summer blockbuster called The Fast and the Fiendish (based on The Fast and the Furious franchise) and he receives his first screenwriting credit. His final pitch is for Laboratory of the Dead, which is positively received by a director who loves everything the others hated about Marvel's films. Marvel admits that he has no experience directing films and is offered a job directing Blood Dragon 3 in Hope County. Development The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto with Ubisoft Kyiv, Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Reflections offering assistance.[17] Dan Hay, who served as lead producer for Far Cry 3, was the lead director, with writing led by Drew Holmes, who had previously worked on BioShock Infinite and its downloadable content.[18] The game continued the series' practice of using the Dunia Engine, a modified version of the CryEngine.[19][20] The team chose Montana as the game's setting, as the state lies on the frontier of the United States. To create a realistic environment, the development team visited Montana for fourteen days to collect information regarding its biomes, environment, and the "self-reliant" nature of the locals, who do not want any authority or outsider to intervene in their life. The development team had previously carried out a similar research excursion to Nepal during development of Far Cry 4.[21] As the development team was no longer satisfied with having one core antagonist in each game, the cast of antagonists was significantly expanded.[22] After the release of Far Cry Primal in 2016, Ubisoft stated that the next Far Cry title will take more development time and would not be released in 2017.[23] Far Cry 5 was announced by Ubisoft during the company's financial call, alongside two other major titles, The Crew 2 and Assassin's Creed Origins, which were released in fiscal year 2018.[24] Ubisoft released several teaser trailers and the game's cover art ahead of the game's official reveal on May 26, 2017.[25][26] The game was released on PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One with support for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. Free skin packs were made available for PlayStation 4 players at launch due to a marketing deal between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Ubisoft.[17] Though the game was initially set for release on February 27, 2018, Ubisoft pushed the date back a month to March 27, 2018.[27] To celebrate the game's five-year anniversary, Ubisoft released an update for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions on March 16, 2023 allowing for 60 frames-per-second gameplay when played using backwards compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.[28] Writing The setting and the tone of the game originated from separatism. According to Hay, he often felt unsafe when he was young because of the conflicts between the two superpowers during the Cold War. This manifested in the twenty-first century in the form of frequent terrorist attacks such as the September 11 attacks, and financial problems such as the subprime mortgage crisis and in turn caused people to become increasingly protective as they questioned the government. Ultimately the concept of the "global village" began to collapse, which sets the theme of the game and prompted the team to write a story that features a doomsday cult as the game's main antagonist. Hay started writing the story in late 2014; in February 2016, he investigated the details of the occupation and standoff of a wildlife refuge in Oregon, as he wanted to look for evidence that can show the rise of separatism.[12] To create a memorable story, the characters in the game were designed to have different views and opinions on important events, and different ideologies.[29] Despite the dark theme, the team wanted to ensure that the game is still fun and entertaining to play.[30] Therefore, the team implemented a large arsenal of weapons and open-ended gameplay possibilities for players to use.[31] Music The music in the game was written and composed by Dan Romer.[32] According to audio director Tony Gronick, the team desired to have music in the background through much of the game world, but wanted it to reflect on the nature of the cult, so that the player would be experiencing the cult's messaging throughout the game, tied to the narrative. To do this, Romer created hymn-like gospel music, but with lyrics that described the cult's end-of-the-world teachings. Further, extending on the idea of multiple antagonists, the style of the music shifts as the player enters regions of the world controlled by the different cult members, from country to glam rock to industrial music, representing how the hymns of Joseph Seed evolve under his siblings' personal preferences.[32] The game also uses licensed music tracks when the player drives in vehicles, with the type of music played similarly influenced by the area they are in.[32] The ambient/post-rock band, Hammock, used some of the songs Romer produced for the game and reinterpreted them. This resulted in a multi-volume soundtrack release, which consists of the original soundtrack and the three-part Far Cry 5 Presents series. Far Cry 5 Presents is a thematic compilation of the additional music used in the game: Into the Flames collects cult songs written by Romer and performed by various artists, When the World Falls is a choral version of those songs, and We Will Rise Again is their ambient reinterpretation by Hammock. Live action short Coinciding with the release of the game, Ubisoft released a live action short film called Inside Eden's Gate. It was produced by Asylum Entertainment.[33] The film serves as a prologue to the events of the game, and follows three filmmakers as they travel across Hope County. They meet Mark and his sister, Faith who is in the game being taken in by the Eden's Gate cult.[34] It stars Greg Bryk and Kyle Gallner. Ubisoft first made the film available on Amazon Prime, before releasing it on YouTube on April 4, 2018.[35]Far Cry 5 received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[38][37][36] Daemon Hatfield of IGN gave it an 8.9 rating, saying "Far Cry 5 is another wide-open playground with all the necessary ingredients for causing a real ruckus: loads of enemies and allies, temperamental wildlife, and plenty of explosions."[47] Polygon gave the game 6.5 of 10 possible points, stating "It’s a shame that Far Cry 5 is propped up by a weak story with bland characters, because behind the plot is an open world filled with what Far Cry as a series does best."[48] The game's ending polarized critical opinion. Should the player choose "resist" when prompted—an ending regarded by Ubisoft to be canonical—the game depicts a series of nuclear explosions that destroy civilization. Critics argued that this ending invalidated the player's actions by rendering them meaningless.[15][16] The tourism board of the state of Montana partnered with Ubisoft after Far Cry 5's release to use some of the setting imagery for the game to promote tourism to the southwestern part of Montana, the setting that inspired the game's fictional Hope County.[49] Sales Far Cry 5 became the fastest-selling title in the history of the franchise, more than doubling the sales of Far Cry 4. It was the second-biggest launch of an Ubisoft title, behind Tom Clancy's The Division, grossing $310 million in its first week of sales.[50] The PlayStation 4 version sold 75,474 units within its first week on sale in Japan, placing it at number two on the all format sales chart.[51] In May 2020, Ubisoft revealed that Far Cry 5 (and 10 other games published by them in the 8th console generation) had sold over 10 million units by March 2020.[52] Controversy Many journalists opined that Far Cry 5's setting and narrative concept, involving themes of religious fanaticism and the emergence of far-right political movements within the borders of the United States—as opposed to the more exotic locales depicted in other Far Cry titles—would likely make the game highly controversial.[2][19][53] These journalists noted that due to the long development cycle, it was unlikely that Ubisoft intentionally designed the game's narrative around the political climate at the time of the announcement, adding that Ubisoft had been careful to downplay any perceived connections to contemporary events.[53][54] Responding to the criticism, game director Dan Hay revealed that the story was written to discuss the consequences of beliefs and ideologies being taken to their most extreme form rather than as a response to a particular political event.[55] Hay stated they had come to setting the game around a cult in Montana as they felt Montana reflected a remote frontier most people were not aware of, comparable to their other Far Cry game settings, and that after visiting the state, found that Montana was a place "where people go to be alone, where they don't want to be messed with", further resonating with past Far Cry themes. However, after three years of development, Hay said: "we could have never imagined, and to be honest I wouldn't have wanted to... that in some ways, it's echoing out in the real world."[56] Following its announcement, Far Cry 5 was the subject of an online petition lodged at Change.org by individuals objecting to what they called the portrayal of American Christians as villains and calling for the game's antagonists to be recast. The petition suggested Muslims, inner-city gang members, and other non-white antagonists as possible replacements. The petition also suggested changing the game's setting to Canada.[57] The petition itself was criticized by industry commentators who highlighted the game's exploration of its themes as being necessary in the contemporary social and political climate, and pointed to video gaming as a medium for social commentary.[54][58] Some publications also questioned the authenticity of the petition, suggesting that it may have been intended as satire.[58][59][60] Conversely, after the game's release, some outlets criticized it for opposing reasons, for trying to be inoffensive and apolitical rather than directly engaging with contemporary political issues. Polygon's Ben Kuchera described the game as a "defiantly inoffensive mess" which "wants to appeal to everyone, but ultimately says nothing."[61] William Hughes writing for The A.V. Club disparagingly described the villains as an "easily digestible evil" deliberately crafted so as not to offend gamers of any political persuasion.[62] Andrew Webster's The Verge says that the game "creates the illusion that it has something to say, then stubbornly refuses to say anything."[63] With the release of the sequel Far Cry 6, Ubisoft and the game's writer have confirmed the sequel is "inherently political", creating a continuation of the political controversy within the Far Cry series.[64][65]

After killing her, the phone rings, and a woman named Zoe answers him and tells him that she will provide assistance. Ethan Fights Infected Mia When Ethan goes back to see Mia’s corpse, she gets revived and attacks him once again. In this fight, Mia cuts Ethan’s left hand. Ethan once again kills her in self-defense. Bakers Family After the fight, Jack, head of the Baker family, arrives and captures Ethan. Zoe reattaches the left arm of Ethan, and after that, he wakes up on a dining table of the Baker family. The family includes Jack, his wife, Marguerite, his son, Lucas, and an old woman in a wheelchair in a catatonic state. Ethan tries to run away inside Jack’s house, where Jack pursues him. If harmed, Jack regenerates quickly. Ethan finds the basement, where he finds some mutated creatures called Molded. Zoe then reveals herself to be the daughter of Jack and the bizarre situation regarding her family. She explains that her family is infected, and so is Mia. Ethan will need a special serum for the cure. For special serum, Ethan travels to an old house for the ingredients. There he defeats Margeruite and gets a vision of a girl. Ethan gets all the ingredients and returns to Zoe. After getting to Zoe, Ethan learns that Lucas has captured Zoe and Mia as hostages. Lucas forces Ethan to traverse around a barn filled with monsters and booby traps. Ethan does so and even outsmarts Lucas, which results in him fleeing. He then rescues Zoe and Mia. Zoe is able to produce serum, but only two. Suddenly, Lucas arrives in a heavily mutated form, where Ethan has to use one of the serums to kill him. Ethan now has to choose between Mia or Zoe for the remaining one serum. Mia Path If Ethan chooses Mia, then Zoe gives him a bitter farewell, and Ethan will leave with Mia on a boat. During their travel, they find a crashed tanker. A creature attacks them, and Ethan gets knocked out in the process. Mia wakes up and starts searching for Ethan. During the search, she regains her memory about her involvement in a bio-weapon, where she had to oversee it. The bio-weapon is called Eveline, and she was on board the tanker ship, being transported to Central America.Eveline somehow escaped and infected Mia. Mia finds Ethan and gives him a vial of Eveline’s DNA. Eveline starts taking control of Mia, which she somehow resists. Mia rescues and seals Ethan out of the tanker to prevent her from hurting him. Zoe Path If Ethan chooses Zoe, then he will leave with Zoe on the boat. Zoe reveals about Eveline and tells him that she is the reason, all the bizarre stuff is happening. Eveline arrives and stops Ethan and Zoe’s escape. She kills Zoe and knocks out Ethan. Zoe’s Route Mia then starts searching for Ethan and finds him. Mia gives him the vial of Eveline’s DNA. When Eveline takes control of her, this time she does not resist due to her getting betrayed by Ethan. She attacks Ethan, and this time he finally kills her. Resident Evil 7 Ending Explained After either choice, Resident Evil 7 merges during the end. Ethan leaves the crash site and finds a hidden laboratory in an abandoned salt mine. Ethan now learns fully about Eveline. He learns that she is a bio-weapon of E-class. Eveline can infect people with psychotropic mold, and this allows her to control people. Eveline wanted a family, and this became her obsession. Due to this, she infected the Bakers family and Mia. Ethan uses the equipment of the laboratory and Eveline’s DNA to create a toxin capable of killing her. Now with the toxin ready, he makes his way through a tunnel. He reaches the original abandoned farmhouse. Eveline learns of Ethan’s plan and starts assaulting him with powerful visions and hallucinations. Ethan, after all these, reaches and injects toxin in Eveline. Ethan learns that the unnamed old lady in the wheelchair was Eveline the whole time. One twist develops at this point in the game, the toxin, instead of stopping Eveline, helps in further mutation, which makes her into a giant monster. Ethan fights her but only kills her when a military helicopter drops a special weapon. After all this is over, Chris Redfield, Blue Umbrella Corps Alpha team leader, arrives and rescues him. The ending depends on the choice of Ethan. If he chose Zoe, then Ethan will be alone in the Helicopter grieving over the loss of both Zoe and Mia. The games have evolved considerably over the past 21 years. And Agent 47, their bald, barcoded protagonist, has been through a lot. Like other titles in the series, Hitman 3 will focus on stealth-oriented exploration of sandbox-style level, giving the player an almost unlimited number of ways to sneakily bump off their targets. But Hitman 3 will also delve into the clone assassin's origins, in ways that connect with the very first game in the series. Casual Hitman 3 players and even series veterans might not know everything about Agent 47's backstory, so here is the entire Hitmantimeline explained. Fans of the Hitman franchise are aware that Agent 47 is a cloned assassin who kills high-profile targets for cash, but some may not be familiar with exactly why he was created or where he comes from.His origins are explained in the series's first game,Hitman: Codename 47. This time period in 47's biography is partly covered in the novel Hitman: Damnation. Writtenby Raymond Benson, Damnation isthe second Hitman novel so far. Picking up in 2011, Diana Burnwood has grown disillusioned with the ICA, (for reasons that are further revealed in Absolution). She appears to abandon 47 in the middle of a mission in Nepal, which ends with him severely injured. A disgusted 47 quits the ICA and works as a freelancer, proving that even the world's best assassin can still have a rough patch. The novel introduces Benjamin Travis, Burnwood's rival within the ICA who then lures 47 back into the agency. An American televangelist named Charlie Wilkins then hires 47 to eliminate American presidential candidate Dana Linder so he can run in her place. Wilkins then orders a hit on himself so he can eliminate 47 and keep him quiet, but 47 kills Wilkins instead.Hitman: Absolution debuted in 2012 on PS3 and Xbox 360. This time, the game begins with 47 appearing to double cross Diana Burnwood, shooting her in her Chicago home. Agent 47's new ICA handler, Benjamin Travis, then tasks him with recovering an asset named Victoria, a teenage girl who's another genetically modified assassin. Refusing to force her into the life of an assassin, 47 instead helps Victoria escape. Eventually, it's revealed that Travis created Victoria without ICA approval, and ordered 47 to eliminate Burnwood to keep it quiet. Instead, 47 only pretended to shoot her. Burnwood and 47 eliminate Travis and help Victoria escape to a normal life. While it did tell an emotionally driven story that explored 47 as a character, it also included many divisive features that IO Interactive's installments would later abandon, including more linear level design and an enemy detection system that was limited by a charger bar.Absolution was also Square Enix's final game as Hitman's publisher. The ensuing relaunch of the series would take things in a very different direction. In 2016, IO Interactive debuted the reboot of the Hitman franchise on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Linux, Mac, and Google Stadia. It had a new name, simply titledHitman, and a new episodic release structure. This time, new missions would only be added to the game every few months, rather than all at once. Hitman distilled the franchise and its ever-expanding storyline into its core elements: open-world sandbox-style levels that encourage experimentation and lots of replays. The delays between level releases were meant to encourage players to return to the same locations and discover more. Therefore, the missions themselves were more developed and the story elements were minimized in this installment. Picking four years after Absolution, Hitman finds 47 and Diana Burnwood back at the ICA carrying out a series of hits for a mysterious customer known only as the Shadow Client. Eventually, all of the targets are revealed to be agents of Providence, yet another shadowy organization in the Hitman universe. You are Blake Langermann, cameraman, and husband to Lynn Langermann, an investigative journalist who’s looking into the suspicious murder of a pregnant woman in rural Arizona. Your trip starts on a helicopter, where you wake up from a dream. In the dream, you see an old friend you had in the 4th grade by the name of Jessica Gray, who committed suicide. After waking from the dream, you begin to discuss the details with Lynn. There’s a sudden flash of light which causes the helicopter engine to fail and results in a serious crash, separating you from your wife. The search for Lynn begins. In your desperation to find your wife, you run into crazed and homicidal villagers. The flash of light shows up again and causes paralysis among the villagers. You manage to avoid succumbing to the light. You find your wife. She is obviously very traumatized and will not speak about her experiences. You both decide to focus on trying to escape. Prophet Knoth, leader of the religious cult members you keep running into, announces Lynn is pregnant with the antichrist and sends his followers, the Christians, on a mission to find and kill her. You and your wife bump into a Christian search party. Another group called the heretics joins you, but after killing the Christians off, they decide to abduct Lynn, leaving you alone in the woods. You manage to evade the search parties but there is another light flash which prompts you to have a flashback. In the flashback, you’re back in catholic school where your friend Jessica, committed suicide. After you come to, you run into a man named Ethan. He reveals himself to be the father of Anna Lee, the pregnant woman you and your wife were investigating. During his explanation of the story, Ethan summarizes that Prophet Knoth raped Anna, got her pregnant, and then sent Ethan to kill her. Instead, he lied to Knoth, giving her a chance to flee. As stated in the police report, Anna Lee still died from strangulation and had high traces of mercury in her bloodstream. Ethan helps you and allows you to hide in the basement of his home. Ethan is murdered by an old cult member by the name of Marta who is unaware of your presence in the basement. You flee from Ethan’s home, evading more search parties. You find a chapel and encounter a man named Josiah. He’s restrained and missing his eyes. Josiah reveals that he was punished because he refused to tell the cult where Lynn is being kept. You conceal yourself in the confessional, and watches as Knoth tortures Josiah’s spouse, Mary until he finally confesses that Lynn is the mines with the heretics. Knoth kills Josiah and Mary. On your way to the mines, Blake’s visions get darker and more frequent. You encounter Laird and Nick who dub you the Sculled Messiah. They attempt to re-enact the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus by nailing you to a cross. When you try to escape, you’ll fail and end up getting buried alive. Eventually, you manage to escape and are tasked with evading another religious cult called the Sculled. You stumble upon a boat and make a raft. As you make your descent down the river, your visions continue to worsen. You reach land and continue towards the mines, evading a group of heretics. When you reach the mines, you’ll find an elevator which proves to be faulty. It breaks and plummets into the darkness. You survive the fall, and deep inside the mines, you encounter Val and her group of heretics from earlier. They don’t want to give up Lynn and attempt to kill you. You manage to escape Val but mistakenly end up in the middle of a heretic gathering where you find Lynn. Val finds you and you have another vision. This time revealing an important piece to the plot. In his vision, you see what happened to Jessica before she committed suicide. When you awaken, you find yourself still in the mines. You’re chased by some heretics until you find the exit. You also encounter Lynn. Together you flee from the mines. You’ll run through the woods as a storm rages on. Marta shows up and tries to kill the both of you. Before she can, the cross from the top of the church falls down and kills her. Inside the chapel, Lynn dies giving birth. Blake passes out with the baby in his arms. When you awake, Knoth is sitting next to you. He starts rambling on about killing all of the Christians and then instructs you to kill the baby. He then commits suicide by slitting his throat. Blake walks down to the square with the baby. It appears that everyone is dead. You have one last vision. A girl that looks like Jessica is in the Catholic school kitchen with bruising around her neck. After she says a prayer, the game comes to a finish. As the story in Outlast 2 progresses, you’ll notice that Blake slowly starts to lose his mind. His visions of Catholic school and the events surrounding the death of Jessica Gray begin to consume him because of the residual guilt and a feeling of being personally responsible for her suicide. In Blake's vision, it's revealed that he and Jessica had a somewhat romantic relationship. Blake expresses feelings for Lynn to Jessica. They get caught hanging around late at school by Father Loutermilch who tells Blake to go home. Jessica asks Blake not to leave and shows concern for being alone with Loutermilch. Despite her pleas, Blake leaves and can hear Jessica screaming. She's violently assaulted by Loutermilch and Jessica is devastated that Blake would abandon her when she needed him the most. She later commits suicide by hanging herself. In your visions, the demonic entity you see is Father Loutermilch. This is revealed by the mark above the phantom’s right eye, which is in the exact same spot as the scar on Father Loutermilch’s face. During your playthrough, you’ll find a Document called Old Traveler sticking out of a sleeping bag by the lake. The entry goes into detail about the source of the light you see repeatedly throughout the game. This light is a signal emitted from a nearby radio tower and is used for brainwashing/mind control. In the same Document, Jenny Roland, also known as Jennifer Roland, the pathologist from Mount Massive Asylum, is mentioned. This reveals that the device is made by the Murkoff Corporation, the very same company behind the MKULTRA program that ravaged Mount Massive Asylum. Eventually, the prolonged exposure to the signal drives everyone in the village violently insane causing them to turn on one another and kill each other. As for the ending to Outlast 2, we can only speculate about what happened to Blake and the baby. Outlast 1 A few decades ago right after World War II, American government have started Operation Paperclip. During it, hundreds of German scientists were moved to the USA to work there. Their researchers were focused on different objects such as atomic energy, rockets V-2 or human psychology. Scientists were put in secret laboratories or hospitals where they can work remaining almost invisible for entire American society. But nothing stays buried forever and secrets of former Nazis were revealed in 1971. That was only one small group, but their hideout was closed and they were fired. That hideout was Mount Massive Asylum. Later, in 2009 new group of scientists called Murkoff Corporation being secretly supported by CIA reopened this asylum to continue researches. They wanted to create a supernatural entity which can be controlled by humans. That was a preamble and now we are close to the story of Outlast. The protagonist Miles Upshur receives an anonymous message about cruel experiments in Mount Massive Asylum. He decides to travel there and reveal secrets of this strange place. Miles enters the building and finds ruined halls, corpses of workers and patients. Our hero also finds a dying guard which warns him about the incident. The asylum is full of mutated inmates now… Miles wants to leave this place, but Chris Walker catches him. Yes, that is the big guy who wants to kill you. Chris is a former security officer of Murkoff. Anyway, he throws Miles in the atrium where another freak is. Father Martin tells the story of the incident and claims that Miles is his apostle which has to tell the world about Mount Massive Asylum. Martin forces a journalist to discover all secrets. Let’s pass about 80% of the gameplay when Miles exploring his new prison, running from maniacs and trying to survive. He meets Father Martin again near the end of the game and reveals that there is the Walrider, a swarm of nanoparticles controlled by one of the comatose patients called Billy Hope. Martin then immolates himself telling that the elevator is usable now. That last trick causes that Miles descends into a kind of lab under the surface. There our hero finds Rudolf Wernicke, a former Nazi, and scientist in Murkoff Corporation. Rudolf claims that the Walrider drives mad and wants to kill everybody here so Miles should deactivate a life supporting system of Billy Hope, the Walrider’s host. Miles accepts it, but after deactivating becomes a new host for a strange entity. At the end soldiers of Murkoff with Wernicke try to kill Miles, but the Walrider protects him and murders guards. As Outlast left a lot of questions developers created this additional story. It starts with actions of the original game and ends a bit after that. Here the main protagonist is Waylon Park, one of the workers in the asylum. His story explains what’s going on in this building. Smart folks from Murkoff exploit the Morphogenic Engine to control dreams of patients. They create the Walrider, a kind of ghost consisting of nanoparticles and slightly controlled by humans’ will. Waylon sends an e-mail to Miles Upshur with the description of inhuman tortures and researchers. Then the Walrider crushes his chains only two starts the incident. Waylon gets rid of his own bonds and runs to the exit. His adventures are quite similar to ones of Miles as he even moves the same way, but mirrored. After several encounters with mutated patients and bosses Waylon leaves the asylum and spots a car near entrance… Yes, Miles Upshur came by this car. But Miles now is near the main door of the building possessed by the Walrider. This episode shows that Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower is taking action on the same day. Waylon with his videos recorded on the camera leaves the asylum safely and Miles remains there. It’s also not specified whether Rudolf Wernicke survived or not. But it’s obvious that Murkoff Corporation is still dangerous. In the last scene of this additional story, Waylon decides to upload his videos and opens secrets of Murkoff to the world.

Call of Duty’s return to World War II is surprisingly a fast-paced take on the classic setting. It provides for a good campaign, a great new mode in multiplayer among other good changes, and a creepier, dense version of Nazi Zombies. However, each core part of Call of Duty: WW2 is marred by inconsistencies and minor flaws that hold it back from being a landmark in the series. Still, it’s a solid Call of Duty game and I’ve enjoyed the many hours I’ve already poured into it. Campaign While my personal custom is to skip a Call of Duty campaign and jump straight into the multiplayer, this year I was happy to start Call of Duty: WW2 with this very personal-feeling but typical war story. The campaign, which follows Private “Red” Daniels through pivotal moments like D-Day (of course) and the liberation of Paris, is a good primer for what’s to come. It shows how well Call of Duty’s combat adjusts back into a historical setting for the first time since 2008’s World at War, and, more importantly, tells a good story with some fun action movie-style spectacle. Over the short (or average, for this series) five- to six-hour campaign, I slowly but surely found empathy for Daniels and his squad. The story is built mostly through excellently animated cutscenes and in narration after missions – the standard Call of Duty fare. I appreciate that while Daniels and his squad fought the obvious Nazi enemy, the tension between characters also developed as they found themselves deeper and deeper in the war, and that drove much of the drama. He is also looking for someone, and asks the mob for help. He's looking for the man who betrayed him back in the war. It seems like he lives here in Liberty City. So the dangerous journey is also a revenge mission were Niko does everything to avenge the man who killed his friends.Niko Bellic, a war veteran from the Bosnian war who struggles with memories of the horrors of war, migrates to Liberty City in search of a better life as well as to escape the memories of his past. However, Niko and Roman are forced to leave their home in Hove Beach as Russian mobster, Dmitri Rascalov, puts their lives at stake. Will Niko be able to get the dreams he wishes that he wanted to have in Liberty City, or will he have to live through his memories again?Welcome to Liberty City.
