In Episode 9 of Alex In The City we travel to a Pickles mustard factory An ordinary pickle costs just a few yuan per kilogram, but there is a pickled mustard green that costs seventy to eighty yuan per kilogram. They are indeed a "luxury pickle". Dazu pickled mustard green is a specialty of Chongqing and is "one of the famous traditional Chinese pickles". Dazu people have had the custom of growing the mustard green since ancient times, with a history of more than 800 years. Pickled mustard green is not only an essential seasoning for cooking Sichuan cuisine but also an important condiment. Here, the mustard green goes through six processes starting with sowing, harvesting, drying, pickling and placing into a pot then opening. The sealed fermentation of mustard green takes approximately three years or more. The production is dark brown, oily and shiny, crisp and refreshing with a robust fragrant and moist when the pot is opened. Therefore, the pickling technique of Dazu mustard green is in the "intangible cultural heritage" listed in Chongqing. Zhuxi Town is the main planting base of Dazu mustard green, with a 3,000 mu planting area. (1mu=666.67 square meter) The town adopts the development model of "company + cooperative + base + farmer". The cooperative's 500-mu planting base is in charge of the surrounding 500 farmers. The daily purchase volume during the harvest season is more than 20,000 kilograms. The cooperative will receive it all no matter how much the villagers plant. It relieves the farmers' concerns and reduces the enterprise's production cost. The output of mustard green per mu here is about 800 kilograms, and the villagers can earn about 2,000 yuan per mu. It has become an important industrial support for poverty alleviation here. #dazu #chongaing #china World Heritage Tour | Dazu Chongqing As a world heritage site, the Dazu Rock Carvings have always been attracting tourists from all over the world. Last month, iChongqing's special correspondent Alex, and Lara, a reporter from Hainan International Media Center, experienced this cultural treasure together. Their itinerary included Beishan Rock Carvings, Baodingshan Rock Carvings, and a special rock carving studio. The Dazu Rock Carvings is a collection of sculptures and carvings located in Chongqing's Dazu District, about 150 kilometers from downtown Chongqing. The steep hillsides of the Dazu area are home to an extraordinary collection of carvings dating back to the 9th – 13th centuries. Highly regarded for their aesthetics quality, the diversity of the subjects they depict, and the light they have helped shed on the day-to-day life in China during this period, the Dazu Rock Carvings have provided tremendous insights and evidence of the harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism in ancient China. The Baodingshan scenic area is located approximately 12 kilometers Northeast of the urban area of Dazu District. It is the largest and most famous carving locations in Dazu, surrounded by ancient temples, the Dazu Rock Carving Museum, and a shopping area. The most expressive and beautiful carvings can be found at the Baoding Mountain Scenic Area in a U-shaped gorge with two groups of carvings from the 12th to the 13th centuries near a monastery. The North Mountain is likely the second most famous location after Baoding Mountain. The statues at North Mountain were first carved around the time of the late Tang Dynasty and competed during the Song Dynasty. Unlike Baoding Mountain where most of the carvings are along a long cliff face, at North Mountain, most of the carvings are found in hive-like caves. There are nearly 10.000 sculptures on North Mountain, mainly carved by secular skilled carvers to show their devotion to Buddha. The carvings at North Mountain are famous for their exquisite craftsmanship, elegance, and show the development and changes of the Chinese folk Buddhist beliefs. Dazu District attaches great importance to the protection, inheritance, and development of Dazu Rock Carvings. The rock carving craftsman Liu Nengfeng introduced the inheritance history of stone carvings to Alex and Lara. Dazu rock carving art has been handed down from generation to generation for over 1,300 years. It has made significant contributions to the development of Chinese rock carving art, Chinese fine arts, and even global fine arts. Now, it has become a unique souvenir, a valuable handicraft collection, and a premium gift among people and has been sold to more than 40 countries and regions such as the United States, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. The steep hillsides in the Dazu area near Chongqing, contain an exceptional series of five clusters of rock carvings dating from the 9th to 13th centuries. The largest cluster at Beishan contains two groups along a cliff face 7-10m high stretching for around 300m. There are more than 10,000 carvings dating from the late 9th to the mid-12th century which depict themes of Tantric Buddhism and Taoism. Inscriptions give insight to the history, religious beliefs, dating and the identification of historical figures. The late 11thcentury Song dynasty carvings at Shizhuanshan extend over 130m and depict Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian images in a rare tripartite arrangement. The Song dynasty carvings at Shimenshan dating from the first half of the 12th century extend along 72m and integrate Buddhist and Taoist subjects. At Nanshan the Song dynasty carvings of the 12th century extend over a length of 86m and depict mostly Taoist subjects. The culmination in terms of expression of Tantric Buddhism is found in the U shaped gorge at Baodingshan which contains two groups of carvings dating from the late 12th to the mid-13th century near the Holy Longevity Monastery. The very large group to the west stretches for about 500 metres and comprises 31 groups of carved figures depicting themes from Tantric Buddhism as well scenes of herdsmen and ordinary life. Until 24 pm on March 13 Beijing time, there are 14 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases and three asymptomatic cases. All confirmed cases were students from Chongqing City Management College. The university town is quite far from the Yubei District where I live and work, but for everyone’s safety, many districts and communities, even companies, have carried out the nucleic acid test. In Chongqing Daily Group, where our office is located, the test starts at 9:00 and finishes in 3 hours, covering about 3,000 staff, and the result will come out in 8 hours. The medical staff is coming just for this company. Basically, they can do any tailored service, flexible and efficient. I am also impressed by the government’s efficiency in the epidemiological investigation. It is reported that before the onset of the disease, one infected person has visited Jilin Province, where several cases were recently reported. It is believed that this case imported the virus to Chongqing. The trace tracking is considered an invasion of privacy abroad, but my Chinese friends take this as their responsibility and for the good of all.
