A message for the biblical festival of unleavened bread discussing two complimentary approaches: 1) removal of sin from within you 2) removal from sin that surrounds you

The unleavened bread we eat at Passover is a reminder of the haste with which Israel had to leave Egypt. Let's also consider our haste to leave the bondage of sin. Deuteronomy 16:3 You shall eat no leavened bread with it. Seven days you shall eat it with unleavened bread, the bread of affliction—for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste—that all the days of your life you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt. God's repeatedly tells His people they are to be prepared, alert, clear headed, to think and act in manner that is ready for everything to change without much warning. Does a person need to be baptized to receive salvation? Don't let yourself be deceived by the tricky arguments of false teachers. Let's take a look at what exactly is the path to salvation. Not a Personification Evil does not spring forth from the substance of the universe... it is not baked in to creation. God said that what He created was good... The true biblical message is that evil, with its real and painful consequences, has been introduced into God's creation from an external agent acting on his own initiative. That external agent is Satan, who is a personal being active in the physical and spiritual world. A personal being means he has thoughts, plans, a freedom to choose what actions and attitudes he follows. A personal being who also was created good... but given the freedom to choose. Satan used the personal freedom God gave and chose to oppose his creator. He made this choice at some point prior to human history and since them he has worked to spread his message of rebellion to as many as will listen. You and I have been created in the flesh and declared good... part of that good design is the freedom to choose. However, it is through that choice given to human beings that Satan has entered into the created physical universe. And it is through the ongoing choices humans make that Satan is able to operate and dominate our world. He has used that access to undermine and interfere with human being's development into fully spirit born children of God. Humans are guilty of allowing Satan's influence to lead them into disobedience towards God... but Satan' guilt is unique... it is not shared with any other... no one led him astray... His rebellion against God was of his own imagination. When Jesus Christ returns to administer the rule of God on earth His first executive action is to depose Satan and confine him so that he has no ability to access or influence humanity for 1,000 years. The source of deception and evil thinking will be removed and the earth will experience what it is like to live without Satan for that 1,000 years. That removal of Satan is pictured by the 5th biblical festival, the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 16:20-22 On the day of Atonement the Azazel goat is cast out into the wilderness carrying the sins of the nation of Israel on its head... this is a prophecy of a future moment in history when Satan will be seized by the angelic servants of God, bound, cast into a bottomless pit, and sealed in Isaiah 27:1. The Church of God teaches and proclaims a coming 1,000 year millennial rule of Christ on earth. We consider it an important phase of God's plan of salvation and spiritual birth into His family. This fall we will celebrate the biblical festival called the Feast of Tabernacles. That celebration will include plenty of talk and instruction about this interesting 1,000 year time period called "the millennium". Christ’s return is spoken of throughout the bible. The specifics of a 1,000 year earthly rule is built upon a reading of Revelation 20:1-6. Pointing believers towards the expectation of a 1,000 year millennium may seem like an obscure interpretation of prophetic verses particular to the modern age. Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Your attitude towards the bible can help or hinder your level of biblical understanding. To truly understand and receive the fullness of God's revelation of knowledge and truth we must approach the scriptures with an attitude of humility and respect. 1. Jesus gave us His command to love one another. There is no prayer our Creator is unable to hear… He is all knowing and all seeing. God also has all power over all things so He is not limited in what He can do in response. Every human being who has ever lived will be judged... but not all at the same time. There is time appointed for you, me, the man down the street, Europeans, Asians, Africans, Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists. People who died last week and people who died 3,000 years ago. Where do you fit into the timeline of God's righteous judgment. Various non-biblical cultures have their own ideas about life after death. Christians, Jews, Muslims have their ideas about death. Without recounting all the variations the basic concept is that a person will be judged after they die and receive some sort of reward, or punishment based on what they did in this life. Most of what is taught about the afterlife and in particular about judgment is foolish non-sense. The only reliable source of information regarding the afterlife and in particular about judgment is the bible. Many people think they know what the bible says about judgment but really don't. The average person's belief about what they think the scriptures say has more in common with human folk-tales that the actual recorded word of God. The Day of Covering is the 5th annual holy observance of God's festival sequence is a day we have given the name "day of atonement". That name is a somewhat figurative English rendering invented in the 1,500s to try and describe a biblical concept alien to our own culture. A literal interpretation of the Hebrew Yom Kippur is "day of covering". As a word picture it summons up covering something over with bitumen, pitch or asphalt. The idea being that whatever is underneath is completely and irrevocable covered, forgotten, out of sight. Today we are going to discuss what is covered over and why. We start with the old testament instructions for this day: ✅ For the high priest - a covering and cleansing ritual he was to perform on behalf of the people for sins they might have committed unknowingly, in ignorance Hebrews 9:7 [Leviticus 4]. This ceremony includes a goat called the azazel. ✅ For the average person - a day of fasting and humbling ourselves before God. The feast of trumpets marks the beginning of the 7th month as related to the sighting of the new moon as outlined in Leviticus 23:23-25. It is the beginning of the year which is why it is often called Rosh Hashanah meaning "head [of the] year'. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, literally "day of shouting or blasting". The trumpets we associated with first of the fall holy days… are war trumpets, calling troops to battle. However, the trumpets are also a proclamation of rejoicing, and victory. The trumpets of this day look forward to the trumpets that will sound when Christ returns to resurrect those who are His and usher them into life everlasting. This victory is for the person who overcomes... who masters and controls his or her own spirit. Who regulates what they do by God's command. Who submits to God. The feast of trumpets is a day of war and turmoil. For those who are in Christ it is also a day of rejoicing, a day of reminder, a day of victory, and a day of new beginnings. The story of Israel spending 40 years in the desert is recorded for us as a lesson and a warning. God does not want us to make the same mistakes they made. His desire is that we learn to live not by bread alone but by every word of God. To this end we are given the bread from heaven through Jesus Christ. The manna given to Israel in the wilderness did not lead them to everlasting life. Specifically we are to be on guard against: idolatry, sexual immorality, testing God, and murmuring against God. These warnings are illustrated in the record of the golden calf, the seduction of the Moabite women, Israel's cries for water, and the rebellion of Korah. Biblical grace is an important idea. Ephesians 2:8 tells us that it is by "grace we are saved". So, it is worth our time to grow in our understanding of God's grace: what does grace mean in biblical terms, how does God's grace work, where do we find grace in scripture. Is biblical grace simply God's unmerited pardon for sin? What does the word charis mean? Why is the word sometimes translated "favor"? 1 Peter 5:12 We are also told there is a true grace and therefore a false grace. Jesus Christ’s death was planned by God before the creation of the world. It was necessary that He die for the forgiveness of our sins and our reconciliation with God. Details of God’s “plan” are prerecorded in scripture and therefore come with a universally acknowledged date stamp to prove they were given prior to the event. Without bogging down in multiple historical details… its an agreed upon fact that the old testament scriptures were written hundreds of years before the death of Jesus Christ. Details of God’s plan are indeed embedded in the old testament scriptures. So we can look back on these fulfilled prophecies and say, the death of the messiah was planned event… and based on the explanation we get from the new testament… planned from the very beginning. Through the holy spirit we can become begotten and born again as children of the Creator of the Universe. While we are still children we are being trained for important roles in the coming kingdom of God where we are to be seated with Christ share the glory of God. That training involves putting on the mind of Christ until we mature into the fullness of Christ. When He returns we will enjoy the redemption of our bodies unto spirit and the gift of eternal life... the fulness of sonship will be ours. When we reach full maturity we shall be given the full rights of sonship in God's family and designated as heirs along with Christ.
