NFL vows to stop 'race norming' to compensate brain injuries | DW News
Published on Jun 5, 2021
In 2013, the NFL agreed to pay 865-million dollars in compensation and medical fees to former players, whose on-field concussions had caused brain injuries and cognitive disorders like dementia.
But several Black former players received nothing - despite their injuries. Turns out this is because of something called "race norming," which assumes that the average black player has a lower level of cognitive function than white players. The effect of this is that, even though the vast majority of NFL retirees are black, black players have to demonstrate a greater level of damage than white players to get the same payout - and many end up with nothing. This week, the NFL promised to stop using race norming and to review the cases of Black players who feel they have been unfairly discriminated against.

Israeli opposition parties strike deal to form new government | DW News
Published on Jun 3, 2021
An unlikely coalition of disparate Israeli opposition parties struck a deal on Wednesday night to form a government. The agreement could potentially resolve an extended period of political deadlock and force beleaguered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from the political stage after 12 years in office. Yair Lapid, a centrist, and Naftali Bennett, an ultranationalist, announced the deal after they succeeded in cobbling together a coalition government with a number of parties from across the political spectrum. Lapid managed to pull together signatures from seven parties signaling their willingness to form a coalition shortly before his mandate to form a new government expired at midnight.

The blind spot of Germany's dark history | DW News
Published on May 28, 2021
Books, movies, and monuments, Germans have used everything to expose and examine their past and their guilt. But one particularly dark chapter does not get as much attention: The country’s colonial history.
Before World War I, the German empire was the third biggest in the world. The colonies covered regions that are now these countries: Imperial Germany sent troops to control the colonies. They brutalised local people and used them as forced workers and soldiers. They shipped thousands abroad as slaves. And they plundered the colonies, exporting things like ivory, diamonds and cocoa. When the Herero and Nama people in present-day Namibia rebelled, the German occupiers slaughtered them. Estimates suggest German imperial troops killed up to 100,000 people. It was the first genocide of the 20th century.
Most Germans we approached here in Berlin couldn’t find their country’s former colonies on a map.
So why do Germans know so little about their colonial history?

Vaccination gaps enable virus mutations | COVID-19 Special
Published on Jun 4, 2021
Almost 2 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered worldwide to date. But is it enough to wipe out Sars-CoV-2?
Of course, those shots are not evenly spread across all continents. In terms of sheer numbers, North America and Europe managed about 370 million shots each.
South America with Covid-stricken countries like Brazil has a lot of catching up to do. Africa and its more than 1.3 billion people only received 34 million doses so far while Asia is storming ahead with more than 1 billion shots.
But that doesn't mean Asia is fully vaccinated. Far from it. There are huge gaps, like in Vietnam, a country that has long been praised for its response to the pandemic. Now it is faced with new outbreaks and a new variant.
Pakistan scrambles to ward off aggressive variants | COVID-19 Specia
Published on Jun 2, 2021
The number of new infections is seemingly going down in Pakistan, though the accuracy of the data is in question. And how sustainable is this downward trend given that neighbouring India is grappling with an aggressive variant? It may all depend on Pakistan's ability to ramp up vaccination across the country. And there's a lot of catching up to do.
Will Pakistan's 'PakVac', a locally produced vaccine, push be enough to stem the tide?

A Look Inside Russia's Kremlin
Moscow’s Kremlin is one of the most impressive royal residences in the world. It’s now the official home of the Russian President, but before Vladimir Putin called it his own, it belonged to the ultra-rich Tsars of the past. Russian rulers like the Romanovs were worth hundreds of billions of dollars-- and their gilded gold home is definitely not subtle. The Grand Kremlin Palace features the Armoury, where treasures like the Great Imperial Crown and double throne of Tsars Ivan and Peter are stored. The Terem Palace is connected to this treasury and features the private rooms of the royal family. The palace is believed to also house hidden rooms, Ivan the Terrible’s secret underground library, and passageways that were used to hide priceless treasure.
The Grand Kremlin Palace has areas off limits to the public-- like the Tsar’s royal apartments. But there are also rooms everyone can explore, like the many golden halls featuring bronze chandeliers, opulent skylights and priceless art. But rumour also has it that dungeons are hidden under the Kremlin’s towers, and a secret passageway connecting the Faceted Chamber to one of the Kremlin’s many Cathedrals has also been discovered. Join us on a tour as we take you through the Arsenal, State Kremlin Palace and Cathedral Square before we explore the most opulent rooms of the Kremlin, featured in the over $1 billion Grand Kremlin Palace. If you’ve ever wondered what fortune a Russian royal can afford, then this video should help satisfy your curiosity.
