Winchester Repeating Arms is possibly one of the most widely recognized names in the world of firearms. Throughout its history, Winchester has ridden a roller coaster of wild success and near misses. The company is famous for its lever action rifles, bolt action rifles, and shotguns, and is nearly synonymous with the Wild West. They made excellent firearms that saw action in both World Wars, but they struggled in the years between and after.
Winchester emerged from the failure of a lever action rifle called the Volition, an offering available from the partnership of Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson (yes, that Smith and Wesson), which resulted in an improved lever action rifle designed by Benjamin Tyler Henry (yes, that Henry). Smith and Wesson incorporated as the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company to sell their improved lever action rifle. The Volcanic rifle had limited success, so in 1860, they released an improved version known as the Henry rifle and reorganized the company under a new name – New Haven Arms.
Winchester was known for their lever action rifles, but produced other famous firearms in the late 19th Century. The Model 1897 pump action shotgun designed by John Moses Browning is a notable example. Browning worked with Winchester through WWI, during which he developed the Browning Automatic Rifle and the .50 Caliber Browning Machine Gun. While they had achieved impressive production capacity during WWI, the accompanying Depression forced the Winchester company into receivership. The .32 Winchester Special was the only bright spot during this time.
WWII saw Winchester utilizing their high productive capacity once again. The company regained some of the ground they lost in the years between the wars with M1 Garand and M1 Carbine rifles. And the .308 Winchester, released in the 1950s, became the company's most influential cartridge to date. In 1964, Winchester formed a new design group in order to take advantage of new technology in manufacturing. This date created a line of demarcation, and firearms came to be called “pre” and “post” 1964 models. “Pre-64” models are perceived as higher-quality firearms, and are valued much higher by collectors of Winchester rifles and shotguns.
Though Winchester sold many popular firearms – among them the well-known Model 94 lever action rifle, the Model 70 rifle, and the Model 12 pump shotgun – they were unable to keep pace with increasing labor costs. The company was sold to its employees in 1980, and incorporated as U.S. Repeating Arms. Winchester’s parent company, Olin, retains the rights to and still manufactures ammo under the Winchester name.
Winchester as such remains a significant force in the market for ammunition. They sell products that fit in practically every niche of the firearms industry. Their newest cutting-edge ammunition includes the AccuBond CT and the PDX1 Defender. For shooters who like their traditional ammunition, the Super-X line is a popular choice.
The history of the Winchester company has cycled up and down many times. It's impossible to predict how the company will fare in the future, but their resiliency seems to suggest that Winchester will find a way to be a top manufacturer of ammo for many years to come.

32 ACP Ammo: The Forgotten Caliber History of 32 ACP Ammo Explained
Learn the history of 32 ACP ammo and visit us at https://ammo.com/handgun/32-acp-ammo to get the best discount 32 ACP ammo online.
John Moses Browning designed the .32 ACP cartridge, which was chambered for the Fabrique Nationale 1900 – his first automatic pistol to enjoy commercial success. Known in Europe as the 7.65mm Browning, this cartridge was used by European police and military personnel until the 9mm replaced it. The cartridge was designed in 1899, and has since been chambered in a variety of small, high-quality handguns. These popular pistols are manufactured by Beretta, Colt, Fabrique Nationale, Kel-Tec, Smith & Wesson, and others.
While the cartridge is not renowned for hard hitting, Gavrilo Princip used it to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, pushing the world to war. The cartridge is the benchmark for the minimum acceptable caliber for self defense, yet many firearms enthusiasts disagree, and say it lacks sufficient power in this capacity. In spite of this, it is still a popular caliber for backup weapons, and even as the primary self-defense pistol.
Key advantages of it include light recoil, low noise, and easy concealment for handguns that fire this round. Rapidly expanding hollow point bullets traveling at high speed are on the leading edge of ammo technology for self defense, and the .32 ACP is on the list for many manufacturers of ammunition. Hornady, for example, manufactures self-defense loads for it using its XTP bullet, and Federal tops a cartridge with its famous Hydra-Shok bullet.

Known for its low-cost ammo manufactured in Russia, Wolf's best-selling calibers are steel-cased 7.62x39mm ammo and .223 Remington.
Wolf sells centerfire ammunition for rifles in more than a dozen different calibers and in three different lines of product. Wolf Polyformance and Military Classic Rifle Ammunition are for sale in the calibers most commonly associated with the military – including .223, .308 Winchester, 7.62x39mm, and others. They sell bullets that are bimetal or copper jacketed and configured as full metal jacket, hollow point or soft point. The cases are steel with a polymer coating, and can be found with both Berdan and Boxer primers.
Ammo for the Wolf Gold Centerfire Rifle line is distinct from other lines they sell, as the cartridges have brass casings and Boxer primers. The same style of bullets are sold in this line, but they also include options for match hollow points and multi-purpose tactical bullets.
Wolf also sells centerfire pistol ammo in all of the most common calibers – including 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP and the increasingly favored .380 Auto. These cartridges come in the steel-case lines of Military Classic and Polyformance, and the calibers can also be found in Wolf Gold line, .32 Auto, .357 Mag., .44 Mag., and 7.62 Tokarev.
Wolf Ammunition also carries .22 Rimfire ammo. They sell .22 Long Rifle with 40 grain bullets, offering three types of bullets for the .22 LR: round nose bullets, flat nose bullets, and hollow point bullets. The ammunition itself is available in many different types including Standard Plus, Match, Rifle Match, Pistol Match, High Velocity and Subsonic.
With Wolf's extensive variety of ammunition, they will likely remain a popular choice among shooters looking for low-cost, quality ammo.

Black voters have voted en masse for the Democratic Party since the mid-60s and the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act and the social welfare programs of the Great Society. This solidified black voters behind the Democratic Party, but they had been moving there since the New Deal.
However, it’s a historical anomaly in the United States. The traditional home of the black voter was the Republican Party, due to its historical role in ending slavery and introducing Reconstruction Acts and Amendments to the Constitution. It also did not help that the Democratic Party was the party of Jim Crow, a system of legally enforced segregation present throughout the American South in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Tula Ammo: The Forgotten Brand History of Tula Ammo Explained
Tsar Alexander II approved the start of operations for the Tula Ammunition plant in 1880, in Tula, Russia. It is not widely known that private funds were used to establish the Tula plant and sister plant in Ulyanovsk, and the company remains a privately owned entity.
Tula operated under a contract for the first seven years to produce 210 million rounds. During WWI, the company produced one quarter of all Russian ammunition. And between WWI and WWII, Tula switched from brass casings to steel-cased ammunition, helping to conserve Russia's limited supplies of copper and zinc while taking advantage of the large amounts of iron available in Russia.
Tula was called to service again during WWII, and their factories were capable of producing the 400 million rounds per year required to keep the Russian military in the fight. When the war ended, Tula was able to continue expansion of their production capacity, as well as the variety of ammo they sold. Today, they make more than 40 different types of ammunition for Russian military rifles and pistols, and they export to more than 20 different countries. This ammunition in the U.S. is branded as TulAmmo.
The cartridges themselves have polymer-coated steel casings, bi-metal bullets and non-corrosive primers. Polymer coating on the cases as opposed to lacquer coating increases shelf life and provides more reliable functioning. The bi-metal bullet has a lead core wrapped in steel and coated in copper.
TulAmmo sells a plethora of cartridges, both for rifles and pistols, including .223 Remington, 7.62x39mm, 9x19 mm and .45 Auto. If you have a firearm in military style that was manufactured since WWII, TulAmmo likely makes ammunition you can use for it.
Tula Ammunition has grown continually since it started more than 130 years ago. It is estimated that more than 500 million rounds were shipped to the U.S. in 2009 alone. Committed to producing quality ammunition at an economical price, it's likely that TulAmmo will be providing ammunition for shooters around the world for years to come.

The Poongsan Corporation of South Korea was established in 1968, and is known for working nonferrous metals including copper, titanium and others. In 1973, the Angang ammo plant was established as Precision Made Cartridges (PMC) to provide South Korea with all their own ammo needs. But business was so good, that production overruns bearing the PMC name were soon being sold on the open market. Proud to manufacture nearly all components for making ammunition, PMC uses this approach to establish standards and maintain strict quality control through the entire process.
When consumers buy ammo from PMC today, it's no longer just surplus ammunition. The product line, as well as the selection of calibers they offer, has expanded to address many diverse shooting needs in addition to the South Korean military. PMC produces more than just 5.56 ammo and 9mm cartridges to include manufacturing non-military calibers like .44 Magnum. Full metal jacket bullets are the standard for military ammunition around the globe, and PMC produces some of the best there is. Their product line, however, also includes ammo for hunters, competitive shooters, and people who want ammo for self defense and personal protection.
PMC makes X-TAC MATCH ammunition, with bullets made by Sierra and their own components, to offer benchrest and long-distance competitive shooters a world-class competition round. For shooters who need a good round for practicing, the PMC Bronze line is an economical choice that does not sacrifice quality. They also offer High Velocity Magnum Hunting Loads that shotgunners will appreciate, plated with copper and carried in cups designed to deliver dense patterns with uniformity for maximum performance. Their Starfire handgun hunting ammunition also works for self defense due to the rapidly expanding hollow point design.
PMC sells a wide variety of high-quality competition, hunting and personal protection ammunition. They have earned a good reputation for quality and affordability, and will likely continue to be a significant presence in the ammunition market for many years.

Produced since 1926, Magtech is based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with plants in Minnesota and Germany. The ammunition – which has a reputation for being high quality, consistent and affordable – is shipped from the manufacturing plant in Brazil to all parts of the globe. Magtech sells ammo in more than 50 countries and to more than 20 law enforcement agencies across Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
Magtech manufactures each individual component of their ammunition in house for production of their ammo. Some other companies purchase the components that Magtech makes to assemble their own cartridges, and other Magtech components are sold to individual reloaders for their own use. They produce calibers for civilian shooters that range in size and power, from the diminutive .25 ACP to the hand cannon .500 S&W Magnum. They produce shotgun shells from the entire spectrum, including 12gauge, 16gauge, 20gauge, 24gauge, 28gauge, and .410 bore. They manufacture ammunition for the military of Brazil, including 5.56mm, 7.62mm, .50 BMG and even larger calibers.
Magtech is available for nearly every application and produces ammunition for a variety of shooters, from those who shoot for sport to hunters and those who need self protection.
Leading the way in terms of ammunition cleanliness at the range, Magtech's CleanRange line features Fully Encapsulated Bullets and primers free of lead, which eliminates lead in the air. The shooter also enjoys a cleaner gun after a session of shooting, and a cleaner environment at the shooting range.
Magtech's solid copper hollow point bullet is an outstanding innovation. The previous standard was a copper jacketed lead core bullet, but the copper jacket can tear off the lead core, which is impossible with a solid copper bullet. When copper tears off the lead core, the projectile loses weight and expands less, which reduces energy transfer into the target. Magtech makes this bullet both for their hunting and personal protection lines.
Shooters around the globe will continue to choose Magtech for their reliable, high-quality, and affordable ammunition.

Military Ballistics Industries, also known as MBI, has made a relatively recent entry into the world of ammunition manufacturing. They have a good reputation for their high-quality new and re-manufactured ammunition, and their product line today includes ammunition for all of the most popular calibers on the market – including 9mm, 40 S&W and the recently added .223.
They're also known for the low-cost approach they take in packaging their products, but don't be fooled by the plastic bags. The cartridges inside are built with high-quality components. They fill the casings with Hodgdon powder, cap them with Hornady bullets and plug the base with CCI primers, not to mention other high-quality and well-known ammunition components.
Some shooters feel that re-manufactured ammunition is a product of lesser quality. This can be the case when poorly re-manufactured, but MBI re-manufactured ammo is assembled with care and quality parts. The brass case is the only reused component in re-manufactured ammo, as the case is usually the component of ammunition that is the most expensive and it doubles as easy to recycle. Keep in mind that re-manufacturing is essentially industrial scale reloading, so it is relevant to consider the claim of some reloaders that they can reuse a case three, four or even 10 times, if the amount of pressure generated by the cartridge is low enough.
Attention to detail and product consistency are what really set apart a good re-manufacturer of ammunition. MBI manufactures their ammunition to exacting standards, delivering a high-quality product for training and practice.

Ammo.com Presents Iconic American Flags
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EixjsvHWfm4
We feel sorry for people from other countries – if only because their traditional flags will never hold a candle to America’s. https://ammo.com/gear/flags
We have procured a selection of high-quality flags that represent several proud moments from throughout our nation’s history. Order one and honor the brave men who fought tooth and nail for our freedom! https://ammo.com/gear/flags
Flags were used as military standards long before they were flown to indicate nationality. (The age of sail beginning in the 17th century introduced the practice of flying national banners from ships.) What good would laying siege to a village in 400 BC have done, after all, if the villagers didn’t know who was providing the service?
Flags have factored prominently into American history. We owe our country’s very existence to the brave militiamen who fought beneath standards such as the Moultrie, the Gadsden, and the Bennington during the Revolutionary War. Others such as the Commodore Perry and the Gonzales represent later defining moments when Americans refused to kowtow to foreign governments.
Whether you can trace your heritage back to one of the great men who fought for our country in her early years, or simply love the quintessentially American refusal to yield to outside force, you will take pride in flying one of these high quality historic flags. They say that you should pick your battles. Now is your chance to do so quite literally!

There are few things more synonymous with the American way of life than the suburbs. While certainly not without problems, the suburbs have been home to middle class Americans since the end of World War 2, and even before. But the suburbs are under attack from certain elements of the left as a source of social inequality and (what else?) “white privilege” and “white supremacy.”
If you are alarmed by this article, that’s a good thing. Because these elements of the American left seek nothing more than the total destruction of your way of life, from the people who live in your communities to the types of houses that you live in to the places where you will be allowed to shop and how you get from one place to another.
The policy is called Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH), but beyond this specific HUD policy, there’s a philosophical and political attack on suburbs that goes well in excess of any single policy. There is, without mincing words, a War on the Suburbs in America. It is a war not against a geographical location or a type of housing or community, but an attack on a way of life.

28 Gauge Ammo: The Forgotten Caliber History of the 28 Gauge Shotgun Shell Explained

Introduced by the Parker Brothers Gun Company in 1903, the 28 gauge shotgun is still used today at the skeet club (where it's employed in the small bore class) and by upland bird hunters. Remington Arms Company bought Parker Brothers in 1934, but their shotgun gauge persists as a recognized part of the shooting community.
When compared to larger shotguns, the recoil of the 28 gauge is much less. This is because the cartridge is smaller, which is a significant factor in the appeal of the 28 gauge. The recoil is about 12 pounds, practically nonexistent compared to the 12 gauge (which kicks like a mule with 54 pounds). The smaller charge fired by the 28 gauge is another advantage, allowing for a light shotgun that is quicker to point for many shooters, and easier to carry afield for all.
Some challenges come with these advantages, and the significant reduction in payload is the most obvious. Only .75 of an ounce is loaded in the 28 gauge, which means there are only 373 #8 pellets – while the same size in 12 gauge will have about 100 more pellets. Another challenge is obtaining a 28 gauge shotgun. Browning, Ruger and Weatherby manufacture over-under style 28 gauge shotguns, but the volume they produce doesn't even approach the number of guns that are made for 12 gauge or 20 gauge.
28 gauge shotguns and ammo can be hard to find, but the cartridge is the best tool for the job in certain situations, and truly is worth investing your time and money as it continues to be a well regarded and appreciated gauge by hunters and sport shooters alike.

It’s hard to miss the Gadsden Flag these days. Although it sprung back into popular American consciousness when the Tea Party first got its legs, this is a flag with a long and storied history. In fact, the flag is older than the United States itself.
Back in 1751, Benjamin Franklin designed and published America’s first political cartoon. Called “Join Or Die,” it featured a generic snake cut into 13 parts. The imagery was clear: join together or be destroyed by British power. But why a snake? Around this time, Great Britain was sending criminals over to the colonies. Franklin once quipped that the colonists should thank them by sending over shipments of rattlesnakes. As American identity grew, so did an affinity for American (as opposed to British) symbols. Bald eagles, Native Americans and the American timber rattlesnake – the snake depicted on the flag.

Eliphalet Remington founded E. Remington & Sons in 1816 in Ilion, New York. Growing up a blacksmith’s son, he learned how to make rifle barrels during a visit to a major manufacturer and returned ready to grow the family business. He built a flintlock rifle, and took the rifle with him to a shooting match. He didn’t win the target competition, but he did win the business of several of his competitors.
The Remington rifle business was officially born, and has grown into the oldest manufacturer of firearms in the United States. They are an iconic gun brand that is the only company in the nation to produce both firearms and ammunition domestically, the largest producer of rifles and shotguns in the U.S., and the largest developer and adopter of cartridges in the world.
The company incorporated in 1865, and introduced their famous rolling block rifle. In 1888, Marcellus Hartley and partners acquired E. Remington & Sons, reorganized the business, and renamed it Remington Arms Company.
In 1912, Remington Arms merged with the Union Metallic Cartridge Company to form Remington UMC. Not many years later, they constructed a new plant in Ilion, New York, which continues to operate to this day. During WWI, Remington had contracts to produce M1907-15 Berthier rifles for France, Enfield rifles for Britain, and 1891 Mosin-Nagant rifles for Russia.
In 1940, the U.S. government requested Remington to establish an ordinance plant. They located the plant in Independence, Missouri, and called it Lake City. Remington opened a total of five plants in the early years of WWII, where they manufactured their iconic M1903 Springfield bolt action rifle chambered for the .30-06.
A decade later, Remington introduced one of the most popular shotguns ever made – the Remington Model 870 “Wingmaster,” a 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Through the 1960s, Remington introduced the plastic shotgun shell, the Model 1100 autoloading shotgun, and the Model 700 bolt action rifle.
By the 90s, their focus was on their core community of firearms enthusiasts. Remington recently returned to manufacturing handguns with their M1911 clone chambered in .45 ACP, and their R-15 and R-25 rifles inspired by the AR-15.

This historic document, drafted in the 13th century, inspired the Western conception of individual liberties and checks on government power.
A number of the rights codified in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights find their origins in the Magna Carta. The charter was drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury as a way to settle tensions between the King of England and some of his barons.
The Magna Carta is the foundation of the Western conception of individual liberties, particularly in the Anglosphere. It is also one of the most mythologized documents in history. Still, many today are unaware of its actual content and the historical context in which it was drafted.
While much of the historical context is complex, the main point is this: Under the rule of King John in the 13th century, several barons were unhappy with the nebulous nature of rule and administration. The Magna Carta was an attempt to codify the procedures by which the King ruled over his subjects, in particular the barons. The “Great Charter” was renewed by subsequent kings, though under parliamentary rule, much of its main provisions were slowly stripped away.
The dispute that led to the drafting of the Magna Carta revolved around how a king was supposed to rule. It was believed at the time that, while the king had unlimited powers, he should govern with the counsel of his barons using custom as his guide. The Magna Carta is an attempt to address what the rules are for when the king is not ruling in this fashion.

One of the most iconic American firearms of all time, the M1 Garand was the standard issue weapon for WWII and the Korean War. This is the forgotten history of the man who invented this .30-06 semi-automatic rifle and how it became a symbol of the American military.
“In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.”
General George S. Patton
Any gun nut – er, “firearms enthusiast” – worth their salt has heard of the M1 Garand (it rhymes with “errand,” by the way). This .30-06 semi-automatic rifle is one of the most iconic American firearms of all time, and was the standard-issue weapon for American infantry troops during World War II and the Korean War. Drill teams and honor guards continue to use this in the present day, such is its role as a symbol of the American military.
Fewer, however, know about the life story of the man behind the weapon – John Garand, a Canadian-American engineer and weapons designer. Born one of a whopping 12 children on a Quebec farm, Garand’s father relocated the entire family to Connecticut following the untimely death of the clan’s mother in 1899. All six boys in the family had the official first name St. Jean le Baptiste, however, John Garand was the only one of them who used “Jean” as his first name. The other five used their middle names.
The invention bug ran in the family, with several of his brothers sharing his penchant for innovation. Garand learned how to speak English while working in a textile mill sweeping floors. He later worked in a shooting gallery where he developed an interest in firearms, which, when combined with his naturally innovative nature and machining skills picked up in the textile mill, got him a job at a Providence, RI, tool-making company in 1909. In 1916, he relocated to New York City, where he continued working as a toolmaker, and practiced his rifle skills at shooting galleries on Broadway.

The Long, Hot Summer of 1967: A Forgotten Season of Riots and Urban Unrest Across America
On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast, Sam and Dave discuss the long, hot summer of 1967, a forgotten season of riots and urban unrest across America. The Book of Ecclesiastes says that there is nothing new under the sun. And while many have spoken of the “unprecedented” nature of the rioting in the early summer of 2020, it is actually quite precedented.

The Long, Hot Summer of 1967 was the peak of urban unrest and rioting in the United States in the lead up to the 1968 election. While there are certainly a number of key differences, there are also a number of striking parallels that make the topic worthy of discussion and examination.
The long-term impact of the urban unrest of the summer of 2020 is unclear, but the long-term impact of the Long, Hot Summer of 1967 and related urban rioting was a victory for Richard Nixon in 1968, and a landslide re-election in 1972. One must resist the temptation to make mechanistic comparisons between the two, and we will refrain from doing so here. But the reader is encouraged to look for connections between these events and more recent ones.

John Moses Browning: The Forgotten History and Legacy of the Father of Modern Firearms
On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast, Sam and Dave talk about John Moses and the forgotten history and legacy of the father of modern firearms.

John Moses Browning is known to firearms and Second Amendment enthusiasts primarily as a gunsmith, but he was more than that: He was also an inventor, an innovator, and perhaps one of the most successful firearm designers the world has ever seen. It’s without question that he is the father of modern firearms as we know them. John Browning is arguably the man most responsible for modern firearms, including lever-action, pump-action, and auto-loading weapons.
Browning was born into a Mormon settler family in Ogden, Utah, on January 23, 1855. His parents, Jonathan Browning and Elizabeth Clark, were Mormons who settled in Utah after the Mormon Exodus of 1847. A gunsmith himself, Jonathan often had young John in the shop alongside him, where the child learned concepts of manufacturing and engineering. The elder Browning also encouraged experimentation. By the age of 11, John had created his first firearm from castaway pieces and took it hunting, providing his family with three prairie chickens for the family’s dinner. By the time he was 18, John Browning had taken over his father’s business.
In the spring of 1879, John married Rachel Teresa Child, who would eventually bear John 10 children, eight of whom survived infancy. On October 7th of that same year, John received the first of his 128 firearm patents, this one for the Browning Single Shot rifle.
In 1880, John recruited his brothers and built what would become known as the Browning Arms Company. Although the business was successful, John was not satisfied. Rather than mass-producing firearms for commercial sale, Browning wanted to revolutionize the entire small arms industry.

On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast, Sam and Dave discuss how to organize and start your own local gun club. There’s never a bad time to start a gun club, but there are maybe better times than others. With an emerging global medical police state, the spectre of the most anti-Second Amendment administration in history hanging over the United States, and recurring left-wing riots, now is perhaps the ideal time to start thinking less in terms of gun rights exercised individually and more in terms of collective preparation.
Beyond even preparing for potentially disastrous scenarios, starting your own gun club is just fun. In a time when the powers that be are trying to lock us all in our homes and isolate us as much as possible, forging new social connections might be just what the doctor ordered for you. Practical considerations aside, your own gun club can offer you a kind of social outlet you might not have had since high school or time served in the military.
But saying “start a gun club” is only a good idea – it’s not practical advice. So if you have any interest in starting a gun club, this article will walk you through it. It won’t be the hardest thing you will ever do in your life and, unlike starting a gunsmithing business or some other commercial enterprise, it will likely start to pay dividends sooner rather than later.

If It Bleeds It Leads: How the American Media Perpetuates and Profits from Mass Shootings
On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast, Sam and Dave discuss how the American media perpetuates and profits from mass shootings. Video games. 4chan. “Toxic masculinity.” These are just a few of the media’s favorite folk devils when it comes to assigning blame for mass shootings in America. However, there is startling evidence that how the media covers these tragedies makes them culpable in perpetuating future ones.

This might sound like an outlandish claim, but it’s supported by evidence from no less an authority than the National Institutes of Health. It’s related to a well-established phenomenon of copycat suicides known as the Werther Effect. Other countries’ medias have taken steps to minimize the Werther Effect through self-imposed industry standards on suicide reporting, and many of these standards have parallels with the coverage of mass shootings.
The American media currently has no industry standard practices for how to cover either suicides or mass shootings. However, one can easily see the difference between how mass shootings and suicides are covered. Whereas suicides are treated as somber tragedies, mass shootings often have the sensationalism turned up to 11. There’s a detailed discussion of the shooter’s life story, motives and methods. Strong evidence suggests that this both encourages and instructs potential mass shooters.
Statistically speaking, mass shootings represent a tiny portion of all deaths in the United States. For example, 2017 was the deadliest year for mass shootings in America with a total of 117 people killed. For context, 102 people die from automobile accidents every day according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Institute.
Despite the low frequency of these tragedies, the media pays outsized attention to them for self-serving reasons, which are both political and economic: There's a demonstrated anti-gun agenda amongst America's media. And there's the ongoing shift in the media's business model to attention-based revenue that results in ever-more sensational news coverage and "clickbait" headlines.
The lurid attention to mass shootings is profitable for America's press, cable news networks, and social media companies – despite the consequences encapsulated by the Werther Effect. Thus a look at the role the American media plays in perpetuating these rampage killers is in order.

MOVE Bombing: The Story of How Philadelphia Became "The City That Bombed Itself"
On this episode of The Resistance Library Podcast, Sam and Dave discuss the bombing of MOVE. If we told you that the Philadelphia Police Department literally dropped a bomb on a house in the city in the 1980s, you’d probably think that we had lost our minds. But, in fact, this happened on May 13, 1985, at the MOVE townhouse at 6221 Osage Avenue. The whole event was captured on camera and can easily be watched on YouTube for anyone who doubts that this happened.

The case of MOVE is an unusual one, because they cannot simply be shoe-horned into the usual “they were just minding their own business and then the cops came in with overwhelming force” narrative that more or less applies at Ruby Ridge or at Waco. This is not to imply that the actions taken by the Philadelphia Police Department were appropriate – there were children inside the MOVE townhouse. However, it is important to note that MOVE had a history of violence.
If nothing else, the bombing of the MOVE house in Philadelphia is an excellent example of a complicated situation with no easy answer. This is precisely what makes it worth close examination by those interested in government overreach and Second Amendment rights.

Winchester Repeating Arms founder Oliver Winchester was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 30, 1810. While his life is largely indistinguishable from his career as a gun manufacturer, it’s worth noting that, in addition to revolutionizing the American firearms market, he also served as the 32nd Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut as a Republican from May 1866 to May 1867, underneath Joseph Roswell Hawley. He was also one of the great philanthropists of his time, giving a lot of money in particular to Yale University, which is in New Haven.
Winchester was born on the outskirts of Boston, at a time when there was still farming going on in those parts. His family were penniless farmers in a hardscrabble world. He had almost nothing in the way of formal education. What he did have, however, was a solid amount of business sense and no shortage of gumption. He was apprenticed as a church builder, but quickly began earning a tidy sum as the inventor of a new style of shirt collars for men, which constituted his first patent.
Winchester began his business career making garments in New York and New Haven, and selling men’s furnishings in Baltimore. After years of successful business, he started looking for new opportunities. Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson (you might have heard of their later endeavor, Smith & Wesson Revolver Company) acquired a rifle design and improved it with the help of shop foreman, Benjamin Tyler Henry (yes, that Henry). In 1855, they began manufacturing the “Volcanic” lever-action rifle. The company was incorporated as the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. The largest stockholder was Oliver Winchester.
