Freemasonry is a fraternity that traces its origins to the local fraternities of stonemasons, which from the end of the fourteenth century regulated the qualifications of stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. These fraternities were composed of stonemasons who were working on the construction of the great cathedrals and castles of Europe. They developed a system of moral teachings and a code of conduct that was passed on to new members through a series of rituals and ceremonies. Over time, these fraternities evolved into a more speculative organization, which came to be known as Freemasonry. Today, Freemasonry is a fraternity that is open to men of good character who believe in a Supreme Being. It is a fraternity that emphasizes personal development and self-improvement through a system of moral teachings and symbols. On the other hand, The Knights Templar were a medieval Christian military order founded in the 12th century. The order was created to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. The Templars quickly grew in power and wealth, and they became one of the most powerful organizations in Europe. They were also known for their secrecy and their distinctive white mantles adorned with a red cross. The order was dissolved by Pope Clement V in the early 14th century, and many of the Templars were arrested, tortured and executed. While Freemasonry uses the imagery and symbology of stonemasonry as a metaphor for personal development, the Knights Templar were a religious order. Some people believe that Freemasonry has its roots in the Knights Templar, but there is no evidence to support this claim. Some conspiracy theories suggest that the Templars went underground after the suppression of their order and that they became the basis of the Freemasons. But there is no historical evidence to support this claim. Furthermore, the principles and beliefs of the two organizations are vastly different. Now a place for modern witches to practice freely, just a few hundred years ago, Salem experienced a Witch Hunt that has gone done in history. The Salem Witch Trials began in January of 1692 and by September, only nine months later, 19 people were executed by hanging, 1 man was pressed with stones, and hundreds of others died in jail. While some were tortured to confession, many maintained their innocence. Long before the Salem Witch Trials began in the 1400s with the European witch trials. At the end of the 14th century, the plague wiped out nearly one-third of the population. Survivors strived to find an explanation and many pointed their fingers at witches, labeling single women or those who held knowledge of ancient folklore as working for Satan. Hundreds were burned and tortured during this time. After the Puritans settled in Massachusetts Bay around 1630, the community would suffer years of hardship to find their way in the New World. Including failure of crops, famine, war, a smallpox epidemic, and a mini Ice age. Tensions ran high and the community sought answers. January of 1692 marked the beginning of the famous Salem Witch Trials. It all started when daughter Reverend Samuel Parris, Betty Parris, and her cousin Abigail Williams began “having fits.” Doctors had no answers so it was suggested that they must be bewitched. Soon, other girls in Salem Village began having the same afflictions and the community began to panic. When asked who is bewitching them, they name three names: Sarah Good, Sarah Osbourne, and Tituba, the slave of Reverend Parris. People fear that the Devil is loose in Salem and is controlling a secret coven of witches to cause harm. With this, the hysteria heightens and hundreds of people are accused, arrested, and thrown in jail. Going into this experience I’ll admit that I definitely had some fears about being around Satanists and witches who I didn’t know. I had no idea what these people were going to be like. But after spending time with Thomas, Pixie, and Sarah-Frankie, I ended up learning so much and really getting to know the human beings in front of me. I realized I had no reason to be afraid of them and my fears were only coming from the fear of the unknown. My new friends taught me so much about history, religion, and their belief system and I absolutely loved spending the day with them. This experience was an incredible reminder to release judgment of others and if you take the time to get to know someone, you might be surprised by what you learn.
