Dyslexia The Reading Roller Coaster
Brain Sprints is an Extension of Little Giant Steps www.BrainSprints.com
Reading can feel like a roller coaster when you have a child that struggles. In this episode, you will understand why we, at Brain Sprints at 972-758-1260, say that most labels are symptomatic labels. When things are not going well, symptoms are what most people pay attention to or focus on. Here Jan shares why the focus needs to shift to the root cause of the symptoms so there can be progress instead of the status quo. Coping and compensating is the typical response from the educational community. From a NeuroDevelopmental perspective, the symptoms we observe are caused by a glitch in the brain. These glitches can be addressed at the root and at the very least improved and in many instances totally eliminated. The miscommunication in the brain pathways that result in reversals, inconsistent recall and struggles in reading and writing compositions can be a thing of the past. There really are activities that change the way the brain functions even when there is a diagnosis of dyslexia.

Let's Fix it!
Being a mom of a child with involved developmental issues, Jan knows first-hand the feeling of wanting to “fix it.” The NeuroDevelopmental Approach for Life is dynamically effective for changing the structure of the brain so individuals move through life more efficiently. The NeuroDevelopmental Approach for Life has the capacity to “fix” the glitches in the brain that represent the root causes of these symptoms.

Preschool Essentials
What is it that preschoolers really need to experience to help their brains work at peak capacity when they start formal schooling? That question has puzzled professionals in the educational field for years. From a neurodevelopmental perspective, preschool preparation has nothing much to do with books you find at teacher supply stores, Sam’s or Cosco marked “preschool skills.” It is not whether a child can use scissors, identify letters and numbers or write his name. It has everything to do with the development of the central nervous system and most especially the brain. The brain controls everything we do so if we prepare it with a good developmental foundation, it performs like a well-oiled machine when the pressures of formal academics are presented. In other words, all of the skills mentioned above that so many people concentrate on when trying to teach a particular skill, are really a natural result of good development and specifically neurodevelopment as you find at Brain Sprints.

Siblings of Special Needs
Special needs require special focus. Many parents must focus a great deal on their child with special needs, and rightfully so. Yet, how does the situation of having a special needs sibling affect the other children in the home? All family members of children with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, developmental delays, CAPD, Autism as well as those with syndromes and genetic disorders of all types are affected by these complicated issues. Are there ways that parents can help their other children through the ups and downs of daily life with a special needs family member? The answer is yes! In this episode, Dr. Jan brings in a special guest, an adult sibling of an individual with special needs. You will enjoy this candid discussion of what went right and what could have been better for these siblings, one with moderate/severe special needs and one gifted/typically developing. one with moderate/severe special needs, and one gifted/typically developing.

Kindergarten Skills
From Brain Sprints’ perspective, kindergarten is the culmination of effective development in six areas: tactile, auditory, visual, manual (hand dominance and fine motor ability), language, and mobility (coordination and brain organization). When there are gaps in one or more areas of development, children can suffer from a myriad of learning challenges and even learning labels like ADD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, CAPD, and many others. Most people try to fix these inefficiencies with the curriculum when in fact, the curriculum is designed to advance an individual that already has efficient brain development.

How to make math easier
What traditionally happens when teaching math? A few problems are done to teach a “math lesson” and then we send the students off to “do the rest on their own”. Next, we grade the papers with big red marks, and then what? Do we do more instruction for those missed? Typically not, we just send the paper back with the students and tell them to make corrections. No wonder so many children HATE math. The myth: If we help the student or do some of the student’s problems for them, it makes us somehow guilty of cheating. That myth is debunked in this Brain Coach Tip.

Importance of Audio Recordings
The importance of listening to lots of audio recordings can't be understated. The NeuroDevelopmental Approach promotes the fact that lots of listening leads to better auditory processing, an essential skill for navigating life. Listening to audio stories and books also helps build vocabulary, attention span, imagination, comprehension and prepares the child for future creative writing.

Auditory Processing Tips
Auditory Processing is known in neurodevelopmental circles as the best-kept secret in education, because until recently few people have known about it, yet it affects so many aspects of everyday life. We are talking here about your auditory short-term memory. This auditory deficit has reached epidemic proportion and now officially has its own label – CAPD, Central Auditory Processing Disorder. There are varying degrees of deficiency in auditory processing, and I contend that it is one of the root causes of many learning labels such as dyslexia, ADD and ADHD. At the very least it is intensifying a negative situation for children that are struggling whether they are gifted, typical or have diagnosed learning disabilities.
