Glimpse Into Jeffrey Gibson’s Historic US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale
“Birds flying high, you know how I feel …” The opening line of the song “Feeling Good,” popularized in the mid-1960s by Nina Simone as an anthem of Black joy and resilience in the wake of the signing of the Civil Rights Act, is the fitting title of one of multiple murals by Jeffrey Gibson for the United States Pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale. Gibson, the first Native artist to represent the US in a solo capacity at the international contemporary art exhibition, likewise brings resounding echoes of resistance amid an enduring struggle for Indigenous autonomy across the American continents.
A monumental bright-red sculpture of stepped pedestals against a geometric backdrop and flags mounted on teepee poles graces the entrance, where visitors can appreciate the Cherokee and Choctaw artist’s hybrid visual lexicon of Native and queer iconographies. On preview day, performers enacted a traditional jingle dress dance atop the podium-like structure, which visitors are now invited to climb and activate. Inside, beadwork sculptures that impress us with their technical intricacy take on a tone of subversion through the inclusion of language drawn from US founding documents, materials that represent at once promise and failure.

Tesla has announced layoffs of “more than 10%” of its global workforce in an internal company-wide email. We exclusively reported yesterday that Tesla was prepping a massive layoff.
For the last few months, it has looked like Tesla might be preparing for a round of layoffs. Tesla told managers to identify critical team members, and paused some stock rewards while canceling some employees’ annual reviews. It also reduced production at Gigafactory Shanghai.

Dua Lipa Won’t Fall for an ‘Illusion’ on New Single
Dua Lipa reminds you who she is on the psychedelic-dance single “Illusion.” Her third album Radical Optimism will be released on May 3rd.
Like the album’s previous singles “Houdini” and “Training Season,” “Illusion” is a big, bold dance track tapping into some of the psychedelic and rave influences that inspired her latest LP. On it, she makes it clear she knows what’s real and fake. “Ooh, what you doin’?/Don’t know who you think that you’re confusing/I be like, ‘Ooh, it’s amusing’/You think I’m gonna fall for an illusion,” she sings on the catchy hook. In the video, Lipa and her dancers dance the day away by and in a giant pool with a city skyline in the background.
The scene cuts from the star surrounded by men diving into the pool to Lipa in the water surrounded by a circle of synchronized swimmers as she declares, “I already know your type, think you can play your cards right/Don’t you know I could do this dance all night?”

"Monkey Man" surpasses $10 million in first weekend domestic box office sales
The "John Wick"-esque action thriller "Monkey Man" was the second-highest grossing film at domestic box offices this weekend — making over $10 million across more than 3,000 theaters.
Why it matters: The movie was sold first to Netflix before "political undertones" reportedly scared the streamer off and Jordan Peele stepped in to convince Universal Pictures to pick it up, according to The Wrap.
Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Zoom in: Director, writer and star Dev Patel included real footage of political demonstrations against India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, film critic Siddhant Adlakaha notes.
The target of the revenge-driven storyline is a man who becomes a "half-hearted metaphor for India's contemporary, right wing Hindutva government," Adlakaha writes.
Zoom out: Netflix is losing ground in India, a crucial growth market, The Wrap notes.
The merger of Disney's Indian TV and streaming assets with Reliance Industries' JioCinema together will control around 31% of the streaming user base in India.
Netflix has about 8% of viewers.
ev Patel’s directorial debut, “Monkey Man,” has received an April release date from Universal. The move marks a studio shift for the Patel film, which was initially sold to Netflix in 2021 for $30 million.
The movie is inspired by the legend of the Hindu god Hanuman. Patel stars as Kid, a young man who is surviving by living in an underground fight club and, while wearing a gorilla mask, is beaten by popular fighters for cash. With his rage boiling over, plus a traumatic childhood, the Kid goes out on a journey of retribution against those who wronged him.
The first trailer for “Monkey Man” also dropped, showcasing the film in what looks like a strong combination of “John Wick” and James Bond. While Peele and Monkeypaw are well-known for horror, the trailer looks far more action-oriented.
Patel directs the film from his original story. The screenplay is cowritten with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. The cast includes Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher and Makarand Deshpande.

Like father, like sons? Diddy’s boys Justin and Christian lived luxe lives, then ran into trouble
Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sons may have led a life of glitz and luxury thanks to their once-high flying dad — but now two of them seem to be following in his footsteps, at least when it comes to trouble.
Not only were Justin Combs, 30, and his younger brother, Christian “King” Combs, 26, briefly handcuffed and detained during a major raid at their father’s Los Angeles estate by Homeland Security agents late last month, they’re now in more legal hot water of their own.
First, Justin Combs was accused in a recent lawsuit of being part of a cover-up involving the mysterious shooting of a friend — identified only as “G” — at a recording studio in 2022 with Diddy.
Now his younger half-brother Christian, a model and a rapper, has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman back in 2022 on a yacht the 54-year-old Diddy chartered, according to a new lawsuit.
Per the complaint filed in Los Angeles Thursday and obtained by Page Six, Grace O’Marcaigh, who was hired to work on the boat, alleges the Christian Combs allegedly assaulted her during a charter “sold as a wholesome family excursion” that turned into a “hedonistic environment.”
The suit was filed on behalf of O’Marcaigh by attorney Tyrone Blackburn, who also represents Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones. The latter filed a bombshell claim against Diddy in February, claiming the music mogul repeatedly sexually assaulted him from September 2022 to November 2023.
O’Marcaigh, who was 25 at the time, allegedly witnessed the Combs family party with a “constant rotation of suspected sex workers,” and consume all sorts of drugs during her 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift on the yacht, according to her claim.
In the filing, O’Marcaigh claims that some of the drinks on the Dec. 28, 2022 excursion, including hers, may have been spiked with drugs.

Giant sculpture to be moved from Thompson Center by end of April
A sculpture that has stood outside the Thompson Center for four decades will be moved by the end of the month.
"Monument with Standing Beast," by French artist Jean Dubuffet, is being moved, for now, to a yet-to-be-determined state facility.
It was announced last year that the artwork — nicknamd "Snoopy in a Blender" — eventually will be headed to the Art Institute of Chicago, where several Dubuffet works already are displayed.
“We are honored to steward this work on behalf of the state when the time comes,” the Art Institute said in an email.
But state officials are still determining next steps before that long-term loan, according to the Art Institute. The sculpture will go to a state-owned facility for now.
“It is meant to be a temporary storage site until long-term planning, including renovation and display, can be finalized,” according to an email from the Illinois Department of Central Management Services.
The move comes after Google announced its purchase of the Thompson Center in 2022. The company plans to redevelop the former government building into offices.
The "Snoopy" nickname stems from the sculpture's jigsawed, black-and-white architecture. Dubuffet described it as a “drawing which extends … into space.” The sculpture's four elements are meant to suggest a standing animal, a tree, a portal and an architectural form.
Visitors also can walk inside and through the 29-foot sculpture, something Dubuffet hoped would resonate with passersby.
“It reminds me of Chicago when I see it,” said Cory Wynne from Wicker Park, who has viewed the sculpture for decades.
Like Wynne, Caron Pollard from Rogers Park has encountered the sculpture since childhood, but Pollard is “not opposed to change.”
David Tranen, who lives in the Gold Coast, passes the sculpture “all the time" and said he’s drawn to the material of the fiberglass sculpture.
“It’s good to preserve art in the city and keep it in its place,” Tranen said. “I’d like it to stay here.”

Francis Bean Cobain Marks 30th Anniversary Of Father Kurt Cobain’s Death By Sharing Family Photos
Francis Bean Cobain, the only child of Nirvana guitarist Kurt Cobain, marked today’s 30th anniversary of her father’s death by sharing family photos to her Instagram page.
“In the last 30 years, my ideas around loss have been in a continuous state of metamorphosing,” she captioned the images. “The biggest lesson learned through grieving for almost as long as I’ve been conscious, is that it serves a purpose. The duality of life & death, pain & joy, yin & yang, need to exist along side each other or none of this would have any meaning. It is the impermanent nature of human existence which throws us into the depths of our most authentic lives.”She was just one-years-old when her father died by an apparent suicide.
The posted photos include a close-up of Kurt Cobain’s hands. In the caption, she said her grandmother told her “you have his hands.” Other pictures depicted her as a child with him. She writes that she wishes she knew him better, including his specific tastes, but is thankful for what she’s learned through the long grieving process.
“Kurt wrote me a letter before I was born. The last line of it reads, ‘Wherever you go or wherever I go, I will always be with you,'” she writes. “He kept this promise because he is present in so many ways. Whether it’s by hearing a song or through the hands we share, in those moments I get to spend a little time with my dad & he feels transcendent.”

On Thursday, March 28, Tai Kwun presented Artists’ Night – Hong Kong’s annual signature event dedicated to experimental artists from the region – in association with Art Basel Hong Kong for the first time. Open to local visitors and Art Basel guests, the event activated the heritage and arts compound in Hong Kong, including live musical and dance performances, special installations, and late-night exhibition viewings in Herzog & de Meuron-designed buildings.
In anticipation of next year's edition, Art Basel Hong Kong announced that from 2025 onwards, MGM will present a new prize for Discoveries, the show’s sector for solo presentations by emerging artists. The MGM Discoveries Art Prize is dedicated to supporting emerging artists and fostering new talent. Further details will be announced later this year.
Helming the show for the second year, Angelle Siyang-Le, Director, Art Basel Hong Kong, said of the renaissance edition: 'Art Basel Hong Kong returned to its full scale and spirit this edition, with the city opening its doors to visitors from all around the world once again. I am deeply grateful to all the galleries, artists, patrons, institutional representatives, and cultural partners whose collaboration delivered a show of world-class range and quality in our home in Hong Kong. This edition reflected the city itself to the world: utterly alive and teeming with energy, a meeting place of tradition and the avant-garde, a port of cultures and an essential bridge in the evolving art landscape across regions. Art Basel Hong Kong continues to be a vital anchor in Asia's ever-growing local art scenes and a key moment in the global art trade calendar.'
Throughout the fair, galleries reported significant sales of works by artists across all market segments, geographies, and media, including prominent artists from the Asia–Pacific and diaspora, such as Christine Ay Tjoe, Daniel Boyd, Lee Bul, Hsiao Chin, Fong Chung-Ray, Zhang Enli, Yayoi Kusama, Kibong Rhee, Chen Ting-Shih, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Haegue Yang, and Anicka Yi; international blue-chip artists including George Condo, Charles Gaines, Philip Guston, Sheila Hicks, Roni Horn, Rashid Johnson, Martha Jungwirth, Alex Katz, Willem de Kooning, Alicja Kwade, Paul McCarthy, Marilyn Minter, and Cindy Sherman; and emerging voices such as Kara Chin, Michael Ho, Antonia Kuo, Nawin Nuthong, Fuyuhiko Takata, Qualeasha Wood, and Huidi Xiang. Participating exhibitors remarked on their experiences.
Co-commissioned by Art Basel and M+, and presented by UBS, Chinese artist and filmmaker Yang Fudong activated the museum's iconic facade with a new site-specific, architectural film, as part of a long-term collaboration between the cultural partners. The work is on view to the public until April 9. Hong Kong's first-ever International Cultural Summit took place on the eve of Art Basel Hong Kong in the city’s flourishing West Kowloon Cultural District, bringing together global leaders of arts and cultural institutions to foster international cultural exchange and cultivate long-term partnerships.
Curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, Encounters, Art Basel Hong Kong’s hallmark sector for large-scale projects, extended beyond the show halls, presenting a new installation by First Nations Australian artist Daniel Boyd at Hong Kong’s Pacific Place, supported by Swire Properties, Official Partner of Offsite Encounters, on view until April 7.
Art Basel Hong Kong’s Conversations and Film programs – curated by writer and editor Stephanie Bailey and multi-media artist and film producer Li Zhenhua, respectively – both took place at the HKCEC, offering audiences a unique opportunity to participate in thought-provoking discussions and experience vanguard artist films. Conversations included audiences with artists Haegue Yang, Shinro Ohtake, and Takashi Murakami, among 43 practitioners and industry thought leaders, with works in Film by Qiu Jiongjiong, Anne Imhof, Kimsooja, and more. An open platform for short and experimental presentations in front of a focused audience, Exchange Circle once again took place in collaboration with Art Basel Hong Kong's media and cultural partners, encompassing artist talks, discussions, lectures, book presentations, signings, and workshops. The newly expanded and freely accessible public program in the HKCEC welcomed an estimated attendance of over 5,000.
