Installing Two Creek Crossings For Improved Access
Neighboring properties drain toward our property creating two seasonal creek beds that are muddy much of the year. We had a contractor install two crossings to make access for those sections of the property much better.
There was an 18" culvert and a 30 inch culvert installed and a lot of fill dirt was needed to build up the crossings so a variety of equipment could navigate around the property as needed. Don't forget to subscribe and join us on Facebook, too https://www.facebook.com/flatcreekoutdoors

Tractor and ATV Tag Team Brush Cleanup
The most efficient way I've found to clean up brush and haul it off to our burn pile is to use the atv with a small utility trailer along with the tractor and grapple.
Equipment:

5x8 mesh utility trailer
Kubota L3901 HST compact tractor

Splitting With An Extra Set of Hands
Using the Wolfe Ridge 28c splitter with my 10-year old son. This was his first time helping with the splitter. He was able to control the splitting and I was able to feed the machine and take a lot of the split wood straight to the stack from the outfeed table.
All in all it was a productive morning producing firewood and we'll keep plugging away at it in the future days and weeks here on the farm. Firewood inventory for next year is steadily growing and I'm really pleased with how things are going here. SURPRISING RESULT! Echo CS-590 vs Husqvarna 455 Rancher
Testing a new chain on the Husqvarna 455 Rancher (55cc chainsaw) vs the Echo CS-590 (60cc chainsaw) brought a very close result. Previously I was using the Oregon Advancecut chain, which is a homeowner low-kickback chain. Despite my best efforts sharpening that chain, it didn't come close to the cutting power and speed of the pro series, Oregon Powercut chains that are running on both the Echo and Husqvarna chainsaws.
I use my chainsaws for felling trees, though I don't tackle enormous trees on my property, and I also cut firewood. I feel these 55-60cc chainsaws are just the right size for my needs. I was definitely surprised to see how close the 455 Rancher and Echo 590 were once the 455 Rancher has the same kind of chain. I thought the Echo would be considerably faster, but that was not the case.

L3901 with Grapple Makes Tree Cleanup Easy
I did a bit of firewood harvesting today using some of my favorite ORANGE tools including the Kubota L3901 with Artillian grapple, the Echo CS590 chainsaw, and my little Stihl MS181c saw. I was clearing some encroachment on my fields but also harvesting firewood for my growing firewood business. Splitting The Honey Hole Hardwoods
I got a chance to split a bunch of the wood I picked up from the honey hole the other day. My new Echo CS590 chainsaw quickly broke down some logs I had sitting around. I used the 6 way wedge on the Wolfe Ridge 28c splitter and now I have a lot of firewood that needs to be stacked.

I Spent OVER $400 on a $6 Problem
I've had my Husqvarna 455 Rancher chainsaw for a couple years now and I can't believe I'm just now realizing I've had this one critical maintenance item wrong for a while now.
I left out a couple facts in this video, so here's what you need to know:
^^Stihl 3/8P (picco) low profile chains take 5/32" file (this is what my Stihl MS 181c uses)
^^Stihl 3/8 standard chains take 13/64" file
^^Husqvarna/Oregon 3/8 0.050 chains take 7/32" file, though some people say the 13/64" will work fine too.
I've done such a poor job at at keeping my chain sharp on the 455 Rancher that I've gone out and purchased a new saw (the Echo CS-590), thinking I just need a more powerful saw. We'll see how it performs after a few solid uses.

Going After Some Standing Dead Red Oak
Continuing to add to my firewood inventory, I venture into the woods today to hunt down some standing dead, or recently downed trees. I used my Stihl 181c, aka "my little saw" for all this work. Even though its a small saw, with a good sharp chain on it, it does really well. This small red oak tree was a nice little haul for my 2000 Honda Rancher atv and my 5x8 mesh trailer.

Another Load of Hardwood From The Honey Hole
In trying to grow my firewood business, I'll need a lot more wood and I came across a large, free wood source about 20 minutes away from our farm. I've made a trip out there before for some wood, and today I'm looking to get even more from there. This score got some precut oak and hickory mostly and it all looks pretty good.

Everything is About To Get Muddy
I hate the winters here in Central Virginia. We never get extended cold weather so everything gets really muddy when we have daily freeze-thaw cycles. I'm working on splitting some of the free oak I picked up recently with my Wolfe Ridge 28c compact commercial log splitter. My firewood inventory is growing, but not fast enough because I need to have more wood on-site. Don't forget to subscribe and join us on Facebook, too https://www.facebook.com/flatcreekoutdoors

Too Small For Lumber? Let Me Know What You Think
A couple pine trees came down in recent storms, so today I'm going to get those cleaned up and ready to be prepared into campfire or fire pit wood or lumber for future projects. The chainsaws used today were the Husqvarna 455 Rancher and my old Stihl 181c. That small Stihl is nice and light and quickly limbs up this soft pine.

Just a Short Maple & Elm Splitting Session
Put another half hour in with my new Wolfe Ridge 28c compact commercial splitter. It is a heck of a machine that increases my output compared to my old Champion splitter at least 4x. These maple and elm rounds are all less than 12 inches, so the 4 way wedge makes quick work of churning out firewood.

Firewood Trailer Recovered. Woodyard Re-Organization
Now that I got my firewood trailer out of the mud, I'm going to spend some time reorganizing my woodyard so its set up for growth. Free Wood SCORE Ended On A Sour Note

Wolfe Ridge Pro 28C Splitting BIG Oak Rounds
Today we test out our new Wolfe Ridge Pro 28C compact commercial long splitter on some big 30 inch oak rounds using the 4-way wedge. We're still breaking in the machine, and it has a few kinks to work out, but overall, I'm really satisfied with the performance and output of the machine.
This is the same log splitter used on the Outdoors With The Morgans youtube channel, and similar to the one used by Back 40 Firewood. I've been watching these other channels for a while, and have seen how well the splitters perform with a variety of wood.
My Wolfe Ridge splitter will be used to grow my firewood business. Each of the last two years I've been limited by time with how much firewood I could produce. My old Champion splitter doesn't have nearly the same output potential as this machine. Don't forget to subscribe and join us on Facebook, too https://www.facebook.com/flatcreekoutdoors

Wolfe Ridge Splitter Brings Excitement & Disappointment
My new Wolfe Ridge Pro 28C compact commercial log splitter arrived and I demonstrate its first use, but all did not go as planned. My 6 way wedge could not be installed, and the auto-return valve did not work as expected. I'm sure the kinks will get worked out, but this definitely didn't meet my early expectations.
