The Power of Truth | William George Jordan | Chapter 2 | The Courage to Face Ingratitude
The Power of Truth is a book written by essayist and Saturday Evening Post editor, William George Jordan first published in 1902. It is a self-help book that was originally 151 pages long. Circa 1933 the copyright and printing plates for this book were purchased by Heber J. Grant, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in conjunction with Deseret Book Company, from Nellie Jordan, William's widow. Deseret Book re-published it in 1935 as the 8th edition. Grant first encountered the book while he was in England between 1903 and 1906 serving as president of the LDS Church's European Mission. He purchased over 4,000 copies of it before returning to the United States. He thereafter started a long-running correspondence with William George Jordan.
Portions of the Power of Truth were also published in The Improvement Era, an official magazine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints between 1897 and 1970. An article about The Power of Truth, written by Heber J. Grant, and published in the Improvement Era is linked below:
https://archive.org/details/improvementera4508unse/page/491/mode/1up?view=theater
I have taken the time to record and help preserve this book for future Latter-day Saints because of the insights and truths contained within it's pages. I believe it to be a valuable book in the hands of any people willing to adhere to the principles it teaches. From the Improvement Era article written by Heber J. Grant:
"I had one letter from the author expressing the opinion that from his investigation he had become convinced that more than any other religion with which he was familiar, the religion that you and I have espoused and know to be true, yields dividends of better individual lives, and a religion is of value only to the extent to which it improves the individual status of the man who holds that religion."
That's quite a compliment!

Only A Dad | Spencer W. Kimball
Only a Dad
Only a dad, with a tired face,
Coming home from the daily race;
Bringing little of gold and fame
To show how well he has played the game,
But glad in his heart that his own rejoice
To see him come home and to hear his voice.
Only a dad, of a brood of four,
One of ten million men or more,
Plodding along in the daily strife,
Bearing the whips and scorns of life
With never a whimper of pain or hate,
For the sake of those who at home await.
Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,
Merely one of the surging crowd,
Toiling, striving, from day to day,
Facing whatever may come his way;
Silent, whenever the harsh condemn,
And bearing it all for the love of them.
Only a dad, but he gives his all
To smooth the way for his children small;
Doing, with courage stern and grim,
The deeds that his father did for him.
These are the lines that for him I pen;
Only a dad, but the best of men
