Building the permanent chicken run / chicken fence / homesteading
Before we could start with homesteading projects, we first needed to meet our basic needs: ablution, water and hygiene. Now that all of these have been met, we can move on to other things, like building our permanent chicken run.
We had a temporary chicken run up for the time being so that the chickens could range outside of their coop but it was time for a more sturdy and neat fence.

Building an outdoor bamboo shower / homesteading / DIY
This week, we're sharing how we built our temporary bamboo outdoor shower.
We crafted our shower's frame using Y-standards and rebar. Afterward, we flattened bamboo and skillfully wove them into privacy screens, securing them to our frame.
The housepipe efficiently warms the water, allowing us to enjoy warm showers in the afternoon, except on cold and windy days.
In addition to the shower project, we planted pecan nut trees, and the girls enthusiastically joined in on the fun and learning experience.
Come join our family of seven as we embark on more adventures and navigate the ins and outs of homesteading as newbies.

Connecting into the water pipeline on the homestead / family of 7
We are back in week 2 where we will be installing our water pipeline and tap!
In order for us to start working productively, we need water. There was already a borehole and a main pipeline. We connected into the main feed with a 100m pipe that lays in the veld to connect onto a tap.
With a tap we can now wash up after a hard day’s work, get some veggies working and doing productive work. We get a ton of help from the kids of course.
More of week 2 will follow soon.
Join our family of seven on more adventures and how we get the hang of this whole homesteading thing as newbies.

Homesteading week 1 / Humanure Compost toilet reactor build / temporary chicken fence
🌿 Week 1: Building a Humanure Compost Toilet Reactor & Chicken Freedom! 🐔
Welcome back to Long Time Horizon's Homesteading! In this week's homesteading adventure, we're rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands dirty. Join our family of seven as we tackle not one but two exciting projects on our homestead in the Kalahari.
🚽 Humanure Compost Toilet Reactor: Watch as we build a sustainable humanure compost toilet reactor with a sturdy dry stone foundation. Sustainability is at the core of our homesteading journey, and this eco-friendly addition is a crucial step in minimizing our environmental impact.
🐓 Temporary Chicken Fence: Our Boschvelder chickens are ready to stretch their wings, and we're creating a temporary fence to give them the freedom to roam. The fence is a stepping stone; once we get water on the property, we'll be able to concrete in the permanent poles for a more robust and lasting structure.
🌞 Meet the Boschvelders: Learn about our indigenous Boschvelder chickens, well-suited for the South African climate. These hardy birds can handle extreme heat and cold, making them the perfect addition to our homestead.
Join us in Week 1 of our homesteading journey, where practicality meets sustainability, and dreams take shape. Subscribe, like, and share your thoughts as we navigate the challenges and triumphs of homesteading in the Kalahari. 🌄🛠️🐓 #Homesteading #Sustainability #KalahariLife
