Tesla has unveiled “Optimus Gen 2 a robot that take over repetitive tasks from humans.
Tesla has unveiled “Optimus Gen 2”, a new generation of its humanoid robot that should be able to take over repetitive tasks from humans.
Optimus, also known as Tesla Bot, has not been taken seriously by many outside of the more hardcore Tesla fans, and for good reason.
When it was first announced, it seemed to be a half-baked idea from CEO Elon Musk with a dancer disguised as a robot for visual aid. It also didn’t help that the demo at Tesla AI Day last year was less than impressive.
At the time, Tesla had a very early prototype that didn’t look like much. It was barely able to walk around and wave at the crowd. That was about it.
Tesla Optimus Humanoid robot
But we did note that the idea behind the project made sense. Of course, everyone knows the value of a humanoid robot that could be versatile enough to replace human labor cheaply, but many doubts it’s achievable in the short term.
Tesla believed it to be possible by leveraging its AI work on its self-driving vehicle program and expertise in batteries and electric motors. It argued that its vehicles are already robots on wheels. Now, it just needs to make them in humanoid forms to be able to replace humans in some tasks.
We did note that the project was gaining credibility with the update at Tesla’s 2023 shareholders meeting earlier this year.
At the time, Tesla showed several more prototypes that all looked more advanced and started to perform actually useful tasks.
In September, we got another Optimus update. In that report, Tesla said that Optimus is now being trained with neural nets end-to-end, and it was able to perform new tasks, like sorting objects autonomously.
Tesla Optimus Gen 2
Today, Tesla has released a new update from the Optimus program. This time, the automaker unveiled the Optimus Gen 2, a new generation of the humanoid robot prototype:

Apple’s iOS 17.2 update has arrived, along with a bunch of brilliant new iPhone features. But iOS 17.2 also comes with 12 new reasons to update your iPhone right now because it fixes a dozen security vulnerabilities, some of which are serious.

Apple’s iOS 17.2 update comes with 12 new reasons [+]
APPLE IPHONE
Apple doesn’t give much detail about what’s fixed in iOS 17.2, to give people as much time as possible to update their iPhones before attackers can get hold of the details. Among the security issues patched in iOS 17.2 are two flaws in WebKit, the engine that underpins Apple’s Safari browser. One of these, tracked as CVE-2023-42890, could allow an attacker to execute code, according to Apple’s support page.
The iOS 17.2 update also fixes an issue in the Kernel at the heart of the iPhone operating system that could see an app able to break out of its secure sandbox. Another notable fix in iOS 17.2 is two issues in ImageIO where processing an image could lead to code execution.
Sean Wright, head of application security at Featurespace, also singles out CVE-2023-45866—a Bluetooth-related vulnerability fixed in iOS 17.2 that allows an attacker with the right access to capture keystrokes. He points out that the WebKit and Kernel vulnerabilities “can be chained together to allow an attacker to be able to potentially have significant access to the device.”
iOS 17.2 Follows Emergency Update
The launch of iOS 17.2 comes less than two weeks after Apple issued iOS 17.1.2, an emergency update fixing two flaws being used in real-life attacks. Apple tends to leave its critical security fixes for these emergency releases in between big point updates such as iOS 17.2, to ensure iPhone users aren’t put off by any bugs that sometimes come with feature upgrades.
The good news about the issues fixed in iOS 17.2 is that there’s no indication they are being used in attacks, says Wright. However, leaving holes open means more time to exploit them, so Wright advises updating your iPhone to iOS 17.2 “as soon as you can.”
iMessage Contact Key Verification in iOS 17.2 Explained
Aside from the security updates, another big reason to update to iOS 17.2 is it includes a new feature called Contact Key Verification—an update to iMessage that prevents attackers from reading or listening to your conversations if they have breached cloud servers.
Intended to help tackle increasing amounts of spyware impacting iPhones, Contact Key Verification is different from super-secure Lockdown Mode as it doesn’t affect the functionality of your iPhone.
Lockdown Mode is designed to protect at-risk iPhone users such as journalists, businesses and dissidents from spyware attacks. While it is extremely secure and recently enhanced in iOS 17, it impacts your iPhone's usability and stops you from using some features. For this reason, you should only enable Lockdown Mode if you need it.
On the other hand, the decision to enable Contact Key Verification in iOS 17.2 is much easier if you care about your security.
It’s described in the iOS 17.2 release notes as follows:
“With iMessage Contact Key Verification, users can choose to further verify that they are messaging only with the people they intend. iMessage Contact Key Verification uses Key Transparency to enable automatic verification that the iMessage key distribution service returns device keys that have been logged to a verifiable and auditable map.
“When a user enables the feature, they will be notified about any validation errors directly in the Messages conversation transcript and Apple ID Settings.”
For even higher security, the release notes state, iMessage Contact Key Verification allows you to compare a contact verification code in person, on FaceTime, or through another secure call. You can also choose to create or edit a contact and save a public key to turn on iMessage Contact Key Verification with that person.
You can enable iMessage contact Key Verification by first updating to iOS 17.2, then taking the following steps: Go to your Settings > Your Name > Contact Key Verification and toggle it to “on.”
You’ll also need to update your other devices to the latest version. All devices signed into your iCloud account must be on the minimum supported version of iOS 17.2 Beta, macOS 14.2 or watchOS 10.2. “If you wish to keep using other devices on older versions of the OS, you will need to sign out of iMessage on these devices in order to enable contact key verification,” according to Apple.

Why You Should Update Your iPhone To iOS 17.2
Apple’s iOS 17 launched in the fall, but many people are waiting to update to avoid any iPhone bugs. With this in mind, Apple has also launched iOS 16.7.3 to address the relevant security issues fixed in iOS 17.2. But Apple won’t do this forever—the iPhone maker will soon limit its iOS 16 updates to older devices.
Apple’s iOS 17.2 comes with important security and bug fixes and brilliant new features, making it an upgrade worth applying to your iPhone. The upgrade also comes with the long-anticipated Journal app, which you can lock with Face ID or Touch ID to ensure it's private and secure.
So what are you waiting for? Go to your iPhone’s Settings > General > Software Update and download and install iOS 17.2 now.

Popular Ponzi Scheme Makes Comeback As MMM Krypto, Warns Users No Guarantees
Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox (MMM), a popular Ponzi scheme which swept across Africa, with branches promising returns on investment of 30 per cent a month in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and some East African countries is attempting to make a comeback as MMM Krypto.
Information seen on a flyer revealed that MMM Krypto held a recent event on December 2, 2023, in Durban, South Africa.
While advertising itself on its website as a “Worldwide Mutual Aid Fund, a Financial Social Network, or a World People’s Bank”, MMM Krypto targets an international audience.
Although MMM Krypto claims to be a voluntary informal association made up of millions of people globally who have declared “war against the banks and the Fed to kick against financial slavery”, it issues a warning on its website saying “there are no guarantees and promises! Neither explicit nor implicit. There are neither investments nor business! Participants help each other, sending each other money directly and without intermediaries.”
An estimated three million Nigerians lost N18 billion to MMM, the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) revealed in 2017.
In 2017, one of the many victims of MMM’s Ponzi scheme, Ada Kole, reportedly committed suicide in Kubwa, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He reportedly consumed insecticide following the crash of MMM after he invested N750,000 shortly before his wedding.
Over 2.7 million Nigerians were reportedly scammed of over N80 billion by another Ponzi scheme, which claimed to be a Nigerian arm of a UK-based company, BBH Global.
In 2018, MMM had announced that it was closing down after the death of its founder, Sergei Mavrodi.MMM is back ???????? Don’t even think of trying it oooo”, an X user @OtunbaIcon001 warned.
In the same vein, a South African @Bonisile_RMS lamented “The difficulty with warning your aunts and uncles about MMM and other pyramid schemes is that they will just do it behind your back. They will just think you are jealous because you want your father to be the only one driving a Hardbody.”

The Pixel 8 Pro lands in India, and there's a big problem News
The Pixel 8 Pro lands in India, and there's a big problem
News
Google's latest flagship costs an absurd ₹22,000 ($264) more than the Pixel 7 Pro.What you need to know
Google launched its latest devices in India, and they attract a hefty premium.
The Pixel 8 is available for ₹75,999 ($912) in the country, while the Pixel 8 Pro starts off at ₹1,06,999 ($1,285).
Google also introduced the Pixel Watch 2 at ₹39,999 ($480), but there's no LTE model.
Google unveiled its latest products at the Made by Google 2023 event, with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro offering heady upgrades across the board and a slate of AI-assisted features. A big talking point is that both phones will get seven years of guaranteed Android updates, more than any other phone in the market today.
While there is a lot to like on both phones — be sure to go through our Pixel 8 hands-on to see what's coming this year — Google also increased the prices. While both devices cost $100 more in the U.S., there's a rather drastic increase in India, where the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are seeing a huge price hike that makes them less desirable.
The Pixel 8 is available in an 8GB/128GB configuration, and it is set to retail at ₹75,999 ($912), a full ₹16,000 ($192) more than its predecessor. In fact, the Pixel 7 is now selling for just ₹41,999 ($504), making it a downright bargain. Although Google is offering faster hardware, a 120Hz panel, and new cameras at the back, the Pixel 8 feels needlessly costly.
Then there's the Pixel 8 Pro, which is listed at ₹1,06,999 ($1,285) for the 12GB/128GB version, which is ₹22,000 ($264) more than what the Pixel 7 Pro launched at last year. I just don't see Google's reasoning for the price hike, and while the Pixel 8 Pro has noticeable upgrades — particularly with the cameras — there's a dissonance between what it costs in the U.S., other global markets, and India.
To its credit, Google is launching the Pixel Watch 2 in India, but there's only a Bluetooth-enabled version for ₹39,999 ($480), with no mention of whether an LTE model will make its debut. Google says that all three products are available for pre-order with sales starting October 12, but the store links show as unavailable

Elon Musk’s Grok caught copying OpenAI’s ChatGPT
Elon Musk’s Grok caught copying OpenAI’s ChatGPT in its responses Users of Elon Musk’s chatbot, Grok, have observed that xAI is copying ChatGPT’s code to train its bot as some of its replies to queries cite OpenAI.
A Grok user, Jax Winterbourne, who first shared the observation on X posted Grok’s response to a prompt citing Open AI. According to him, the response showed that Grok was ‘just ripping OpenAI’s code base.’
Although Grok is currently only available to X Premium Plus subscribers, some of the users are noticing that Grok seems to be picking its content from ChatGPT.
Another user identified as Pezzo, also shared a response from Grok asking him to report an issue by contacting the support team via ‘support@openai.com’.xAI engineer admits to copying
In response to the posts, an xAI engineer, Igor Babuschkin, admitted that data from ChatGPT were ‘accidentally’ picked when training Grok.
“The issue here is that the web is full of ChatGPT outputs, so we accidentally picked up some of them when we trained Grok on a large amount of web data. This was a huge surprise to us when we first noticed it. For what it’s worth, the issue is very rare and now that we’re aware of it we’ll make sure that future versions of Grok don’t have this problem. Don’t worry, no OpenAI code was used to make Grok,” he said.
The AI war
Announcing the launch of Grok in November, Elon Musk described the AI model as “the best that currently exists in some important respects.
According to Musk, Grok will leverage “real-time access” to information on X, and, like ChatGPT, the model has internet browsing capabilities, enabling it to search the web for up-to-date information about specific topics.
The model answers questions conversationally, possibly drawing on a knowledge base similar to that used to train ChatGPT and other comparable text-generating models.
Unlike other models, the billionaire added that xAI’s Grok system is designed to have a little humour in its responses.
Meanwhile, Musk had previously called out AI firms like OpenAI for using Twitter’s data to train their large language models. According to Musk, hundreds of organizations or more were scraping Twitter data “extremely aggressively,” affecting user experience.
AI data or content scraping, also known as web harvesting, is when one computer program extracts valuable information already generated by another program or website.
Due to the generative AI boom, massive numbers of automated scraper bots have been gathering data/knowledge to feed to their chatbots.

Apple continues to work on diversifying its supply chain. Given the volume of sales of the iOS-powered smartphone, this is not an easy task, but it is essential for Tim Cook and his team not to become reliant on a single supplier for iPhone components. Part of that is to ensure no supplier has significant leverage over Apple during negotiations; another part is to build resilience into the manufacturing process.
Update: Sunday December 10. Writing for the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes that Tang Tan, Apple’s head of product design for the iPhone and Apple Watch, is leaving the company. Tan has been involved in the design process of every iPhone. His departure may not impact the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro design; much of the design process has been completed—while there are decisions that need to be made, the designs—and potentially the prototypes—will already be available.
What it means looking further out is more important. Product design plays a huge part in the engineering decisions on what will feature in new hardware, the components used, and the look and overall feel of the iPhone.
Tan will take with him significant historical knowledge and expertise. Notably, Apple has not selected a one-to-one replacement for Tan; instead it is sharing out duties across several deputies in each hardware department.

Elon Musk's luck has finally run out
Elon Musk's luck has finally run out
From 2019 to 2022, it seemed as if every gamble that Musk took was paying off. Tesla was consistently profitable for the first time in its history and its stock soared as its massive new Shanghai plant ramped up production. SpaceX rockets captivated the public's attention — even when they blew up, everyone still clapped. Accusations of corruption and self-dealing slid right off Musk's back. Musk could do and say anything he wanted and success followed: He was even named Time's 2021 Person of the Year. Then Musk did what every risk-addicted blackjack player inevitably does: pushed his luck too far. Overconfidence, confirmation bias, and delusions of control led to a string of bad decisions — and BOOM — Elon's empire is in trouble again.
The change of fortune was apparent atThe New York Times Dealbook Conference last week. During an interview with host Andrew Ross Sorkin, the recognizable tells that Musk's hand had gone cold were everywhere. He raged at the very people who will dictate Twitter's fate, seemed baffled by key questions about the future of his companies, and offered non-apologies for his unhinged, antisocial behavior online. Sorkin suggested Musk's brain is like a storm, but it sounded more like two cats fighting to get out of a duffle bag.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is what it looks like when Musk realizes he's in a jam entirely of his own making. I know, because we've seen it before, including back in 2018, when he nearly flew Tesla into a mountain. He may find a way to ward off calamity, as he did then, but this jam is much tighter than the last one. Musk has to contend with over $13 billion of debt still weighing down a swiftly sinking Twitter, Tesla's profits shrinking because of a lack of demand and new products, and a world that is generally sick of his schtick. In Muskland, everything is connected by money — problems at one business bleed into the others. That's why Elon is being exceptionally obstinate. It's not just your imagination — his luck has changed.

Google fakes an AI demo, Grand Theft Auto VI goes viral and Spotify cuts jobs
Hey, folks, welcome to Week in Review (WiR), TechCrunch’s regular newsletter that recaps the past few days in tech. AI stole the headlines once again, with tech giants from Google to X (formerly Twitter) heading off against OpenAI for chatbot supremacy. But plenty happened besides.
In this edition of WiR, we cover Google faking a demo of its new AI model (and giving out offensive notebooks to Black summit attendees), defense startup Anduril unveiling a fighter jet weapon, the continued fallout from the 23andMe hack, and the release of the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer. Also on the roster are stories about patient scans and health records spilling online, Meta’s new AI-powered image generator, Spotify cutting jobs and an autonomous truck startup leaving the U.S.
It’s a lot to get to, so we won’t delay. But first, a reminder to sign up here to receive WiR in your inbox every Saturday if you haven’t already done so.

AI, faked: Google unveiled a new flagship AI model this week called Gemini. But it didn’t release the full model, Gemini Ultra — only a “lite” version called Gemini Pro. In a press briefing and blog posts, Google touted Gemini’s coding capabilities and multimodal prowess, claiming that the model can understand images, audio and videos just as well as text. But Gemini Pro — which is strictly text-in, text-out — has proven to be mistake-prone. And in a worse look for Google, the company was caught faking a Gemini demo by tuning text prompts with still

What to Know About Elizabeth Magill, the Penn President Who Resigned. The Resignation of Elizabeth Magill: A Deep Dive
The president of the University of Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Magill, resigned on Saturday, four days after she came under fire for her responses at a congressional hearing on Tuesday in which she was pressed, along with the presidents of Harvard and M.I.T., on whether students calling for the genocide of Jews should be disciplined.
Ms. Magill seemed to evade the question and drew intense criticism from donors, students and others, some of whom were already angry that she had allowed a Palestinian writers conference to be held on campus in September.
Ms. Magill is the first president of a major university to step down because of the fallout from the protests that have engulfed campuses since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza.

Elon Musk said the account of right-wing extremist Alex Jones would be reinstated on X, formerly known as Twitter, reversing a 2018 decision by the company’s previous management to deplatform the notorious conspiracy theorist after he repeatedly broke rules prohibiting harassment and hate.
On Saturday morning, Musk posted an unscientific poll to his account asking users of the platform if Jones should be reinstated. By Saturday evening when the poll closed, about 70% of nearly 2 million respondents had voted “yes.”
Early Sunday morning, Musk replied to the poll saying, “The people have spoken and so it shall be.”

Shohei Ohtani to join Dodgers on 10-year, $700M contract
Shohei Ohtani will sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, with his agent Nez Balelo saying the two-way star is getting a 10-year, $700 million contract.
Ohtani posted to Instagram on Saturday saying he would play for his former team's crosstown rival starting next season after spending six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels."I pledge to always do what's best for the team and always continue to give it my all to be the best version of myself. Until the last day of my playing career, I want to continue to strive forward not only for the Dodgers but for the baseball world," Ohtani wrote.
The contract is the largest in baseball history by more than $250 million, topping the 12-year, $426.5 million that now-former teammate Mike Trout signed in 2019. The $70 million average annual salary also easily eclipses the previous record of $43.3 million for Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer.
Ohtani, 29, is the first player in baseball history to be named unanimous MVP on multiple occasions, an honor bestowed upon him twice over the past three years. During that stretch, he defied conventionality as he exceled as both a pitcher and a hitter while becoming Major League Baseball's first two-way player since Babe Ruth dabbled in both roles more than a century ago.

—
The Texas Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a pregnant woman from obtaining an emergency abortion in a ruling issued late Friday.
The court froze a lower court’s ruling that would have allowed Kate Cox, who sued the state seeking a court-ordered abortion, to obtain the procedure. “Without regard to the merits, the Court administratively stays the district court’s December 7, 2023 order,” the order states.
The court noted the case would remain pending before them but did not include any timeline on when a full ruling might be issued. Cox is 20 weeks pregnant. Her unborn baby was diagnosed with a fatal genetic condition and she says complications in her pregnancy are putting her health at risk.
Following the ruling, Cox’s attorney said they remain hopeful the state’s request is quickly rejected. “We are talking about urgent medical care. Kate is already 20 weeks pregnant,” said Molly Duane, an attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights. “This is why people should not need to beg for healthcare in a court of law.”
The ruling came just hours after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton petitioned the high court to intervene in the case.
Paxton’s petition stemmed from a ruling on Thursday by a Texas judge who granted a 14-day temporary restraining order against the state’s abortion ban, so Cox could legally terminate her pregnancy.
The decision marked a significant development in the ongoing debate over the state’s medical exception to its controversial ban on abortions after six weeks – one of the strictest in the nation.
In the petition filings with the state Supreme Court, Paxton – who has threatened prosecution against anyone who helps facilitate the abortion – asked for an emergency stay of the district court judge’s ruling.

Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley sentenced to life without parole
Michigan judge sentenced school shooter Ethan Crumbley to multiple life sentences without parole on Friday, after an emotional court hearing where surviving victims discussed their trauma.
Crumbley, 15 years old at the time, killed four people and injured seven more at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021. He pleaded guilty to all charges.
During the hearing, he accepted responsibility and showed regret for his actions.
“Any sentence that they ask for, I ask that you impose it on me,” he said. “I want them to be happy, I want them to feel secure and safe. I don’t want them to worry another day.”
In total, 29 people gave victim statements at the hearing, including parents of victims and students and staff at the school.
“Our family has been navigating our way through complete hell,” Buck Myre, whose son Tate was killed in the shooting, said. “We wear the pain like a heavy coat, constant reminders every day. Every hour is the darkest time of the day.”
“We are miserable. We miss Tate,” he continued. “Our family has a permanent hole in it that can never be fixed.”
Each victim, when asked, requested he be given life without parole

Gunman Who Killed 3 U.N.L.V. Faculty Members Wanted College Jobs, Officials Say
The man who shot and killed three faculty members on Wednesday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, was himself a professor who had tried and failed to get several jobs at colleges in the state, the authorities said on Thursday.
The gunman, Anthony Polito, 67, was living in a Las Vegas suburb and was killed by the police during a shootout after his rampage, officials said. Mr. Polito also shot and injured a fourth person, a man identified as a 38-year-old visiting professor who was being treated at a hospital for life-threatening wounds.
Shortly before the shooting, the police said, Mr. Polito had mailed 22 letters to employees at universities across the country, at least one of which contained an unknown white powder that was later determined to be harmless. The contents of the additional letters were not clear.
