We were restricted on where & how we flew inside the Big Bend Ranch State Park during the Big Bend Ultra Marathon Race, but we found an area outside the park, on private property, where we had authorization to be. In this video, we're flying the DJI Avata Drone just above the ground, checking out places where plants / flora were growing in unlikely areas. It was amazing to see the wide variety of plant life growing in the desert, where they get less than 10 inches of rain per year (average rainfall). We had the opportunity to drive out into the desert in the Big Bend Ranch State Park for the annual Big Bend Ultra Marathon. One of the check points, Bravo, was within line of sight of 2 abandoned mines. This mine, the Whit-Roy mine, was mining a mineral called Cinnabar that was refined by heat into a liquid metal called Quicksilver or Mercury. Mercury was a key ingredient in detonators used by the US Military in World War II and the Korean War. It was very hazardous to humans, but they didn't know about that back in 1935 when they started mining and refining it. We were out flying our drones near Terlingua, Texas, when we spotted this roadside info sign about the Quicksilver (Mercury) mines in the area. The Terlingua Mining District played a big part in World War II because they supplied the Mercury used in the shells used by the military. We'll be posting a couple more videos later for the Whit-Roy and Buena Suerte Mines that we found inside the Big Bend Ranch State Park, so be sure to check for those once we get the time to edit the footage. We had authorization from the Hill Country State Natural Area Park Supervisor for drone flights within the park, in the areas of the run for the 2023 Bandera 100k Hoka Hoka One endurance cross country trail race. Due to time constraints, we only flew near 2 of the Aid Stations, Yaya and Equestrian. There was another team (not affiliated with Yellow Rose Drones) of drone pilots out there on Saturday, flying multiple DJI Mavic 3 Drones and live streaming portions of the race via a satellite Wi-Fi system back to their base in Arizona. One of those teams is the couple that you'll see near the end of the video, speaking with Charles from Hill Country REACT Team. Hill Country REACT Team has been supporting this race for about 20 years, as of 2023, providing radio communications at the 5 check points from start to finish. Our son David & I were based out of the Yaya Aid Station (as seen in the start of the video). Another Ham Radio Team (Charles & Greg) were setup at Equestrian Aid Station, complete with a carpeted area and comfortable chairs, positioned to record the runner bib numbers as they departed the Aid Station. There were 3 other Aid Stations (Chappas, Boyle & Nachos) with members of Hill Country REACT Team staffing them, along with the Lodge (aka the Start / Finish Line). In this video, we give you a brief tour of Aid Station YAYA during the 2023 Bandera 100k Race out in the Hill Country State Natural Area Park. We ran a small suitcase style generator, a Predator 2.2k, to charge our 12v 100AHr AGM battery (normally used for our solar panel setup). We got 7.5 hours of run time for the generator per fill up and we used Ethanol Free fuel (rated @ 90 octane). We only had one LED 1000 watt light connected (mostly to provide a steady load on the generator) and a Schumacher 12v battery charger (that kept our battery topped off in trickle mode). Traffic cones don't work at night very well, unless you illuminate them. We put some Harbor Freight pop up lamps (3-AA battery powered) inside of each cone to light them up. We ended up using 6 AA batteries each, by the time sunrise got here, because they only lasted about 7-8 hours per set. The last runner on the 100k course didn't arrive until around 6:30am, so we stayed awake and powered up all night, about 15 hours of operation all together.

One of the challenges to conducting nighttime trail run events is providing lighting on the course that doesn't mess with the runner's night vision. Each runner has their own head or body mounted LED lights to illuminate the trail, but when we have these check points to manually track their bib numbers (for safety reasons, not timing), we need to make it obvious they need to check in with us. We want to do that without totally screwing with their night vision that their eyes have gotten used to, because the trail beyond us will be very, very dark, lit only by the moon.

This is another fun video from New Year's Eve celebrations at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort, in the kid's area of their exhibition hall. They had 3 sections, the first area was for the adults, middle area was the Games2U inflatable game area (very popular with the kids) and the third area had a huge wall screen where animated movies were being played non-stop. The Movie Room, as you will see for yourself, was not nearly as popular as the Games Room. We flew our DJI Avata Drone (this drone has enclosed props) around the 2nd and 3rd rooms, but we stayed out of the first room with all of the adults. The kids really enjoyed seeing our drone & chasing it around the room, as you will see in the video. The adults with kids, seemed to like it as well, but we didn't want to push our luck in the main room. Our thanks to Mike with Drone Force & Games2U for inviting us out to play on New Year's Eve. We had the chance to drive out to Medina Lake, just west of San Antonio Texas, on New Year's Day 2023 to check out the water level. It's one thing to read about it on the Internet, but it's a whole other experience to see it from the air for yourself. We put our DJI Mini 3 Pro drone up in the air from a couple different locations and stitched it together into a short video that demonstrates how bad the water level really is today. This isn't the worst it's ever been, but it's getting pretty bad. The water level was only 6.4% on this date. We were out flying at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort in San Antonio earlier on New Year's Eve and we decided to launch our drone from their parking lot when it approached midnight. Wow! What a fireworks show we saw from 300ft AGL (Above Ground Level) at this location. We used our cellphone's audio recorder to record the fireworks sounds that were very loud in the parking lot, even though they weren't being shot off from the Resort's property. We edited it down to under 3 minutes by using some speed ramping to increase the video speed by 20%. We used our DJI Mini 3 Pro drone in automatic exposure mode, with manual focus, but it still had trouble getting really sharp images without some noise caused by the low light conditions. We received an invitation to spend New Year's Eve at the JW Marriot Resort (San Antonio Hill Country) with a couple of drone pilot friends who also operate the local Games2U Franchise. They had set up 5 larger games inside this huge Exhibition Hall and there was plenty of room to safely fly our DJI Avata FPV drones inside. We didn't have any GPS signal for stabilization, but that factor didn't cause us any problems. No wind inside to cause drifting was a plus. This video was taken December 10th, 2022, during the annual Christmas Parade for the Canyon Lake area in Sattler, Texas. Included is some drone video of the start, some footage of the staging area, and then using our GoPro to record a firetruck doing the Texas Swing Dance in the middle of the highway. If any of us had driven like that, they would have pulled us over and skipped doing the DUI test before locking us up & taking away our drivers license. LOL Firetruck footage is toward the last 60 seconds of the video. Members of Hill Country REACT Team (Ham Radio) have helped coordinate this annual parade for more than 30 years.
