Precision Pillar Bedding a Hunting Stock - 375 H&H Magnum - Custom African Safari Hunting Rifle
Accurate Rifles and Restorations - Precision Pillar Bedding Services
Pillar bedding, especially a wood stock, is essential to eliminate any climactic and physical changes that may occur throughout the years. Wood expands and contracts with differences in humidity, temperatures, etc. The rifle's action screws are normally torqued between the steel bottom metal and the barreled action with wood in the middle. We are replacing that wood in the middle with stress proof high grade light weight custom aluminum "pillars" - and a perfect 1:1 bedding compound nestled from rear tang to about 1" of the barrel shank for a rigid, solid, repeatable, (and most importantly) CONSISTENT system. Torqueing of the action screws can now be reliably achieved under any condition, and there is no fear of it shrinking or expanding under different circumstances - particularly important if your are travelling for a hunt, competitions, contracting, etc...
Get a "behind the scenes" look at how we pillar bed a wood stock utilizing our Grizzly G0509G Gunsmithing Lathe and Precision Mathews PM935TV Bridgeport style milling machine. This particular job is for a fancy Remington 700 chambered in 375 H&H Magnum. Our eastern USA customer is taking this rig to Africa for a safari hunt and wanted it to be pillar bedded to avoid any shift in climate differences for his once in a lifetime hunt. Wood and metal preparations, custom pillars made from 6061 aerospace grade aluminum round stock, and the entire process documented here. This is 100% custom work, even the through holes are offset for appearance and function. The only thing we don't make is the bedding compound!

Recoil Lug Accurizing Jig - In Use! Beefy jig for ultra precision recoil lug work!
https://www.accurateriflesandrestorations.com
Machining a standard Remington 700 recoil lug with our newly created jig for oversized blueprinting.
Some folks were asking how this is used, so here's a quick demonstration.
The lug is installed in the jig "roughly" center. The jig is then mounted in a 4 jaw chuck and centered in, as one would with any other round part.
The small "step" in the back is to ensure 100% contact at the barrel shoulder, eliminating any possible radius interference at the shoulder junction.
This particular lug was opened up to 1.100" to ensure plenty of room for the accurized receiver threads. It will then be hand-stoned for flatness parallel.

Precision Perfection: DIY Remington 700 Style Recoil Lug Jig for Ultimate Rifle Accuracy
https://www.accurateriflesandrestorations.com
Copy of Gre-Tan Rifles Recoil Lug Truing Jig. https://www.gretanrifles.com/product-page/recoil-lug-lathe-jig
We need one, there's none in stock, so we must make our own...
This jig is designed to enable the gunsmith to enlarge the ID of the recoil lug for blueprinting/accurizing work. Even the "OS" lugs you can buy are often not large enough to allow for total cleanup of the internal threads. After nearly a decade doing this, .020-030" is pretty commonplace.
"After single point re-cutting the action threads, the barrel tenon threads will be a larger diameter. Meaning the I.D. hole in the lug will have to be opened up to give appropriate clearance. In the past smiths set the lug up on a mill, dialed it in and machined for clearance. Accurate but very time consuming for an operation that makes you no money. Just part of the job. This jig works in a 3 or 4 jaw chuck. It takes about 5 minutes to clamp the jig in a 3 jaw, clamp and center lug with the tailstock, dial in with a dial test indicator and then bore diameter."
Thank you for watching!
