Busy Day on the Homestead
Catching up on some chores I’ve neglected over the past week while we were at the fair - recipes & links to stuff I mentioned or used in this video below!
The black mats on my bed are grounding mats, we’ve had them for about 6 months and have had a great experience. My husband doesn’t wake up sore every day and my carpal tunnel has been completely relieved, I’m very satisfied with this investment and highly recommend checking into grounding. I’ll link the exact mats I have, there are a lot of low-quality knockoffs, but these are from the original company that pioneered this technology - https://www.ultimatelongevity.com/earthing-grounding/products/index.shtml?ref=250
Earthly all-purpose salve, I keep one in my diaper bag and have a few throughout the house. This stuff really is great for everything, and very gentle. In fact, I just used it today for a bee sting - https://earthley.com/product/all-purpose-salve-stick/ref/hopewellheights/?attribute_size=2%20oz.%20jar&utm_source=google&utm_medium&utm_campaign=18127371280&utm_id=18127371280&targetid&gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw8symBhAqEiwAaTA__L4-egBvzuC90NOoMI86-gDPiVz4SrYkAfLn8j4NmuHPICTP_YsuexoCOAQQAvD_BwE

garden update | storing onions for long term
The most important factor to consider if you want to store garden fresh onions long-term is variety! Some varieties just store better than others. This year I grew two varieties of onion plants from Dixondale Farms - blush and Patterson.
Blush onions are a cross between yellow and red, popular in France. They store for 5-6 months so I will mostly use these first.
I also grew Pattersons, a yellow onion with 8-10 month storage potential, so I'm hoping I can stretch these until early next summer when I can start picking spring onions to use as I need them before next year's July harvest.
I grew about 300 onions for our family of 6. We will see if I need to adjust next year, if anything I will need more. I'll be using quite a few of these when I make salsa so any that didn't look good for storing, I just set to the side and will use over the next month or two in my salsa and sauce making.
All of my aprons are from Etsy.
My red glasses (which were falling off when I was talking because it was 100 degrees and I was sweating after braiding!) are from Eye Buy Direct, I save a ton of money ordering them online rather than buying them at the eye doctor.
Most of my dresses are from Neuflora, they curate a natural capsule every month which makes shopping easy for me: https://www.neuflora.com/?ref=W4OeJ

Vitex and Fertility
The fertility fix IVF docs don't want you to know about...
In my opinion, this is the best-kept secret for female factor hormonal infertility!
Nature’s Way Vitex is very cheap, you can usually find it somewhere for under $10 a bottle.
While Vitex is a great way to correct hormonal imbalances, it should never be the only thing we do to support hormones. Make sure you’re eating well, sleeping enough, eliminating stressors, and helping your body feel safe to carry a baby. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but women who have hormonal imbalances should not consume caffeine. Hormonally healthy women can usually consume it just fine and even see benefits. But when your hormones are off, caffeine just makes things worse. So consider weaning off caffeine while you try to conceive. If you don’t, the Vitex will probably still work…just a consideration to make.
I use the same whole food supplements in every season of life whether I’m pregnant, breastfeeding, or both, or trying to conceive:
Perfect Supplements beef liver, mushroom blend, and magnesium citrate are dailies for me. I also add collagen to my morning tea for extra protein. Use my discount code HOPEWELLHEIGHTS10 to get an additional 10% off of all Perfect Supplements brands on top of their mix-and-match discounts.

2023 Garden Tour: Living Walkways Gardening
After six years of growing a big garden here on the farm, I've finally found the method for me - something that allows me to have a huge garden with (almost) NO weeding....living walkways are a game changer. I've tried so many other methods and they just didn't work for me. I've tilled and hoed between rows, I've done heavy mulching, I've done lasagna gardening Charles Dowding style (still got soooo many weeds) - for me, this method is it. I'm sticking to this because it allows me to have a huge garden and grow a substantial amount of food without being married to my farm all summer. We like to do other things in the summer too aside from gardening so spending hours every day weeding isn't something I'm willing to do.
I don't remember where I bought my weed barrier or I'd link it. The pole beans I mentioned are Blauhilde from Baker Creek - my absolute favorite pole bean that thrives here in 6b every year.
If you have any more questions about anything I have planted, just ask in the comments and I'll try to answer.
Also, my blue dress is from my favorite Christian-owned capsule shop. I've been purchasing one or two items from their monthly collections for about a year now and I finally have a capsule wardrobe I love! https://www.neuflora.com/?ref=W4OeJ

I'm Steph, wife of John & mom of 4 living on a 5th generation homestead. My husband's great-grandparents bought this farm in rural Missouri in 1942. My husband was supposed to take the farm over after high school - but he decided to go a different direction and moved out on his own. At that time he said he'd never get married or have kids. But here we are - 4 kids later and back on the farm. I grew up in town - so farm life has been a new adventure for me and I absolutely love it. I'm learning as I go and opting out of as many broken systems as I can along the way. We've lived here almost five years now, we homeschool our kids here, raise and grow more of our own food all the time, and our last baby was even born here on the farm - my first home birth. Learn with me as I share glimpses into our life on the farm.

Canning Green beans:
I prefer to blanch and hot pack so as to fit more green beans in my jars.
Pack hot jars full of green beans, leaving 1-inch of head space
Add 1/2 t salt to pints, 1 t to quarts
Top with boiling hot water (I use my blanching water)
Apply lids & rings and process pints at 10 PSI for 20 minutes and quarts at 10 PSI for 25 minutes

How to Cut Long Layers PONYTAIL METHOD | How to Cut Long Hair easy DIY
How to cut long layers ponytail method - the quickest, easiest way to cut long, layered hair!
I've been cutting my own hair for several years now and plan to continue doing so. I prefer to cut my own hair because:
It's cheaper. And by cheaper, I mean it's free.
I never cut too much off.
It only takes me 5 minutes.
BLOG Post with Details: https://hopewellheightsblog.com/how-to-cut-long-hair-in-layers-the-ponytail-method/
*simple tips for growing long, healthy hair*
Hair follicles need adequate cellular energy to function properly. In times of stress, the body prioritizes vital organs like the brain, heart, and lungs. Energy is used up supporting vital functions, leaving vanity aspects of the body like skin, hair, and nails suffering. This is why hair loss is a common symptom of stress.
Reducing stress and inflammation while nourishing the body to produce an adequate amount of cellular energy is the best strategy for overall health, including hair health and growth.
Avoiding chemical products, coloring, and habitual use of heat on hair helps it to stay healthy and grow as well.
There are many plant and animal sources for nourishing the body and reducing stress. This isn't an in-depth post on hair health - just a note, so I won't cover these sources exhaustively. But I will mention two food supplements I consume daily for overall health:
DESICCATED BEEF LIVER - https://www.perfectsupplements.com/Perfect-Desiccated-Liver-p/desiccatedliver120.htm?Click=622cf3e361f39&a_bid=1eef7184
5 MUSHROOM BLEND WITH REISHI - https://www.earthley.com/product/5-mushroom-super-blend-capsules/ref/hopewellheights/
Use discount code HOPEWELLHEIGHTS10 for 10% off both of these supplements.
Reishi mushrooms, which are included in the blend I take, protect against and reverse female pattern hair loss by inhibiting DHT (dihydrotestosterone) - a testosterone byproduct that binds to receptors in hair follicles, causing the follicles to shrink. Reishi is also very calming and effective for reducing stress so it's great for the entire childbearing season. When taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding, reishi has a calming effect on baby too.

This is our 3rd year showing pigs at the fair for 4H - it's such a good way for the kids to put in real work and earn some money to reinvest in more pigs, gave some spending money, and save for larger purchases they'll need to make when they get older.
