TIFF 2023: Toronto film festival kicks off under cloud of WAG/SAG strike
#GlobalNews #Toronto #TIFF
Fewer stars and less buzz are expected at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) which kicked off Thursday under the shadow of dual strikes by Hollywood writers and actors.
Even as red carpets rolled out around TIFF’s downtown headquarters, many questions lingered about how the notoriously celebrity-drenched event would look in a year when most famous people weren’t expected to attend.
More than 200 feature films are packed into this year’s 11-day program, roughly on par with last year’s lineup, and festival CEO Cameron Bailey says ticket sales and interest in the festival are “as strong as ever.”

Body of elderly man left laying in Toronto parking lot for hours in the heat, sparking outrage
#GlobalNews #Toronto
WARNING: Video contains content that may be disturbing to viewers. Discretion is advised.
The body of a 90-year-old man was left to sit in a hot Toronto parking lot for hours after he was struck and killed by a truck earlier this week, sparking outrage and questions over the body removal process.
“There are several investigative partners involved when a fatality occurs and it is incumbent that each stage of an investigation is completed thoroughly and properly,” said Stephanie Rea, issues manager at the coroner’s office, after Global News reached out to the Ontario coroner’s office about the incident.
“The Office of the Chief Coroner makes every effort to complete scene investigations in a timely manner, though there are factors that can effect time of transfer. We are reviewing to ensure proper processes were followed.”

E. coli outbreak: How to protect yourself from bacteria, infection?
#GlobalNews #ecoli #health
If you get sick with an E. coli infection, it can really hit hard. Certain strains of it have the potential to wreak havoc.
This week, more than 90 children have been affected by an outbreak across several daycares in Alberta. At least 22 were admitted to hospital.
"It will cause our bodies to, first of all, want to get rid of it. That means a rush of water into your bowels, which then leads to diarrhea," Edmonton-based microbiologist Jason Tetro said.
As Global's health reporter Katherine Ward explains, there are a number of ways an infection can happen, but some simple steps to mitigate the risks.

‘That ’70s Show’ actor Danny Masterson sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for rape
#GlobalNews #DannyMasterson #That70sShow
"That ’70s Show" actor Danny Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison on Thursday for raping two women.
The decision came after a Los Angeles jury found Masterson, 47, guilty of two of three counts of forcible rape during a retrial in May.
Jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict on the third count, which alleged Masterson raped a longtime girlfriend. The third count was declared a mistrial and has been dismissed by prosecutors, who said they will not retry the charges.
Outside of the court after the decision, L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller said that it was the “right decision” in finding the 47-year-old former actor “accountable.” Mueller added that “even though it’s been 20 years, it still matters. A crime still happened.”

Authorities in India move to clear slums, stray dogs ahead of G20 summit in Delhi
#GlobalNews #INDIA #G20Summit
Indian authorities have increased security measures and deployed thousands of personnel to protect the India's capital, New Delhi, as it prepares to host the G20 summit, starting Sept. 9.
As part of the preparations, slum areas in the city are being demolished, which the government has claimed is part of its continuous efforts to remove illegal constructions on government land. However, many activists have raised concerns over the government's motives and the impact on the affected communities.
In addition to the demolitions, authorities have also started rounding up stray dogs in the city using nets and relocating them to shelters. The move has been criticized by animal activists, who argue that the dogs should not be treated as a nuisance, but rather provided with proper care and support.
Friendicoes, an organization working with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), has captured 234 dogs using nets and relocated them to its three shelters in the city.

Cannabis legalization linked to 94% spike in ER visits for traffic injuries: report
#GlobalNews #Cannabis #Marijuana
New data shows a possible alarming trend when it comes to cannabis use and traffic incidents. A joint study from Ottawa researchers suggests that since cannabis became legal, more people are ending up in hospital emergency departments.
"Since 2010, there has been a very, very large increase in cannabis involvement and traffic injury visits in Ontario. And if you actually look at how that changes year to year going into legalization, this is increasing. This is a growing problem over time," said Dr. Daniel Myran, lead author of the study.
Data shows that after cannabis became legal, there was a 94 per cent increase in the number of emergency department visits for traffic injuries where cannabis was involved. When COVID-19 happened, there was an even larger jump of 223 per cent when compared to the pre-legalization period.

Romania says parts of Russian drone may have fallen on it's territory
#GlobalNews #Romania #Russia
Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, said on Wednesday that if the parts recently found in Romania are discovered to have belonged to a Russian drone, it would be a "serious violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Romania and the NATO allies." The discovery came after Ukraine reported Russian drones allegedly violating their territorial sovereignty.
Romania's Defense Minister, Angel Tilvar, told Antenna 3 CNN "I confirm that pieces which might be elements of a drone were found."
Tilvar added that the area had not been evacuated since there was no indication that the parts posed any threat. Additionally, the fragments would be analyzed to verify their origin.

Scorching summer heat waves break global records in 2023, meteorologists say
#GlobalNews #summer #heatwave
An early September heat wave is burning up the U.S. once again. Millions of people are under heat emergencies as multiple cities report record high temperatures, and the scorching heat is causing an unhealthy air quality for many.
It's so hot that many schools that just reopened for the year are being forced to close. For two days in a row, students in Philadelphia have been dismissed early because of the heat, while schools in Baltimore are back to virtual learning, since many have no air conditioning.
The blistering heat comes as scientists report the world just experienced its hottest three months on record, and the U.N. has issued an urgent call to world leaders to take climate control action.
The planet has never experienced a hotter summer, and scientists say that more pollution and wildfires are expected if this trend continues. Global’s Jennifer Johnson has the latest.
