Parents of CCPS middle school students may need to opt out of the State Health Curriculum AGAIN
Parents of CCPS middle school students may need to opt out of the State Health Curriculum AGAIN if they want that option for their kids
Information from Carroll County Commissioners Kiler and Guerin about opting out of the state health curriculum for CCPS students.
Where is the transparency from CCPS on this issue? I could not find anything about this issue on the CCPS website or social media channels. WHY is that the case?

Maryland Muckraker: A Carroll state of law enforcement
Carroll State’s Attorney Haven Shoemaker and Sheriff Jim DeWees both voiced their frustration with the forces from outside the county that work against law enforcement in it, while a new poll shows that black Democrats in Maryland want stricter penalties for criminals than white ones do — all part of what amounted to a state of local law enforcement address given Tuesday by the pair during a Republican Club of Carroll County event.

2022-2023 MCAP scores for students in Carroll County Public Schools
While we get distracted with flags and books in public schools, the thing we should be focused on (my opinion) is the actual performance of students in Carroll County Public Schools.
The 2022-2023 MCAP scores were presented to the Board of Education on September 13, 2023. Here is a look at the scores and some opinions/analysis of the data:

Does “All Boys Aren't Blue” belong in public schools?
Does “All Boys Aren't Blue” belong in public schools? That is a question I have this morning for the followers of this account.
Listen to a member of our community and hear a passage from the book read by a US Senator in this video…and then let me know your thoughts.
Note: The passage read contains EXPLICIT CONTENT…so I would not listen to it around very young children.

Commissioner Kiler states the design is poor for the intersection changes proposed at MD140 and MD91
Commissioner Kiler states the current MDOT design is poor for the intersection changes proposed at MD 140 and MD 91 in Finksburg
Carroll County Commissioner Kenny Kiler made the following comments on September 21st during Open Session (text below is from a voice to text converter, so while not perfect…it should give you the major points of his comments)
“I went down to Finksburg to the state highways meeting for 91 and 140 essentially they have a very poor design solution to a problem down there and I think enough citizens were there who use that intersection every day that they got the message and they're going to hold another meeting at Sandymount Eelementary probably that'll be more of a town hall and more organized I think they knew I think they they learned in a couple days before it what they were going to see that night and I give them credit they could have easily canceled it that would have looked bad and I'm so glad they had it and people got to talk but if you're interested in 91 and 140 that's a very busy intersection please look out for the town hall meeting that the state's going to do”

Questions for Bruce Cain from MDOT about the intersection changes at 140 and 91 in Carroll County on September 14th
Some commentary, photos and the interview with Bruce Cain. Sorry the audio quality of the interview is so poor but that will give you an idea of how many people were at this meeting on Thursday.
There will be a second meeting scheduled in the future and when the details of that come out The Observer will be sure to let the community know.

Local happenings this week in Carroll County - September 12, 2023
The Board of Education will meet this week - on Wednesday…and if you believe what you read on social media it may be a highly attended event. Why you ask…well the removal of inappropriate books, book bans (however you want to frame the issue) looks like that this ongoing local issue may draw in a number of people to that meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
Maryland State Department of Transportation will hold their meeting about the intersection changes - I refuse to call it improvements yet - on Thursday at 6:30pm at the library in Finksburg. Whether your are for this plan…against this plan…this is an important meeting to attend to get additional details and ask questions. I think a number of members from the community are planning to attend and maybe even an elected official or two.
That is a quick review of some big happenings locally this week.

Required masks for kids in classrooms returns to Montgomery County Maryland
Required masks for kids in classrooms returns to Montgomery County Maryland (at least in one school so far) for the next 10 days in "identified classes or activities"
On September 5, 2023 Rosemary Hills Elementary School has informed parents that "KN95 masks have been distributed and students and staff in identified classes or activities will be required to mask while in school for the next 10 days, except while eating or drinking. Masks will become
optional again following the 10 day period"
What are your thoughts on kids in masks again while at school?
Let me know in the comments.
