When I got the book Starving to Heal in Siberia, I didn't know what to think about it. I had it in my cue to read, but our interview happened first. What Michelle has gone through before her healing is quite amazing. Michelle Slater is a scholar of comparative literature and president of the educational nonprofit Mayapple Center for the Arts and Humanities in Connecticut. She holds a Ph.D. in French literature from Johns Hopkins University.
Her long battle with and recovery from late-stage neurological Lyme disease served as the genesis for this book. Debilitated by the disease to the extent that she was no longer able to teach at her university or perform simple tasks like driving and reading, Slater spent several years pursuing every known treatment, from aggressive allopathic methods to holistic remedies. When all failed to deliver recovery, she discovered Dr. Sergey Filonov’s dry fasting program and spent two months in Siberia under his care. She recovered completely from Lyme disease, regaining her memory and returning to researching, writing, hiking, and running.
Since 2017, she has not experienced a single symptom.

Here's a little bit about Dr. Pete Patitsas:
Dr Patitsas has a full plate! He is an Emergency Medicine Physician, has four kids, and has been married14 years. Before going to medical school, he owned a wellness center that employed massage therapists and a chiropractor.He was an avid rugby player and even represented Greece's national team. These responsibilities and experiences have given him great insight into the elements of health and well being. He lives by "Purpose, Passion, Productivity."
Informed byhis Greek Orthodox heritage, he has discovereda methodto stay healthy with high energy to meet the daily grind of every day! Dr Pete visited Greece many times as a youth and lived there after graduating college. He was forever impacted by his journey to Mt Athosin 2000. He remembers it as a place of stillness, fullness, and adventure. It was like a real life "Lord of the Rings" or "Narnia". A place where time stops and meaning is the highest good.
In medical school, Dr Pete researched the practices of Mt Athoswith a scientific lens and optimized them through a medical perspective. He then lived the diet and in 48 days lost 35 lbs. He appliedthis knowledge while in his three years of residency. This lifestyle allowed him to forgo eating for most of the day, lose weight, yet stilltakecare of his family and his patients.The diet has existed for over a millenia but it was only recently validated, refined, and optimized into the "The Athos Diet". 021: The Aftermath, a DNF at the 150 miler

So here we are... I trained hard, did most of what I should have, and I showed up.
With everything I've done, with all the support that was given, with supplements, food, and all, I should have crushed this race... or maybe I shouldn't have?
Ultra-Marathons are a beast and a sying that was told to me by the race director of the Yeti 100 Ultra Marathon right before I had to carry my race tote a quarter mile to my truck after the race was, "Welcome to Ultra".
So when something good or bad happens at one of these events, I think of the saying. When going into the unknown, you just don't know!
So my Tesla Hertz (shoule be Hurtz) 150 was a bust. I DNF'd my first race officially. You'll hear the full description in the audio and video of this episode, so I won't give ALL the details now.
I felt GREAT after the first 6 laps which were 10.544 miles eacha and wanted to take a little break as I was tired, not in the sense that my muscles were tired, but as in a lack of sleep tired. I also knew I had the potential to be moving for the next 30+ hours. My feet hurt a little so having them off the ground was a great idea. After about 30 minutes of mild relaxation, I stood up and put pressure on my left knee and it felt like a hot dagger being pushed into the outside of my left knee... I took another 45 minutes to see if it would get better and it didn't. So at mile 62.9, a hard decision was made to call it. IT SUCKS... I felt defeated, and that I let myself and everyone else down that has supported me thus far.
I've learned that the rest was a blessing in disguise. Had I pushed through the injury, which was possible, I may have caused more damage that would take me out of the running/ fitness game for some time.
Words from my friend John Galvany ran through my mind when making the decision I made. He told me after spraining my lateral collateral ligament (the same knee I injured this time), and broke multiple toes that I have 2 choices... either take the injury or creat a disability that can take you out for a long time of forever. I'll take the injury every time.

017: I'M STREAKING... a running streak that is!
If you follow me on social media, you already know that I've taken on the challenge of streak running and have shared a bunch of videos worth watching. What that means to me is that I will run every day. There's a mininum of 2 miles daily, though most days are much more. At the time of recording this episode I'm up to 109 days... and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.
In conversation with other runners, I realized that consistency and putting the reps in, in anything you do will make you better. I've ran with multiple pro runners that have said they have rand for over 3 years on their personal running streaks including doing ultramarathons during those streaks.
I've done 2 ultras while on this 109 day streak, and have another coming up on October 8th in Long Island, NY. It's called the Tesla Hertz ultra marathon. I believe they have a 50 miler, 100 miler, and 150 miler... I signed up for the 150.
Sharing this with you is not meant to impress you. It's meant to impress upon you that you are more powerful than you think. Like David Goggins says, you have to shup up that inner bitch that we all have that's putting a limit on your what you think is possible, and stopping you from creating the best, most abundant life possible.
