Animal Population Control.
Animal Population Control.
Pet "overpopulation" encompasses two main factors: cats and dogs being allowed to breed with little chance of finding homes for their kittens, and pets being abandoned by owners who can no longer keep their animals or who no longer want them .
Every year, millions of dogs and cats are sacrificed in our nation's animal shelters because there are more pets than there are responsible homes for them. Until this issue is resolved, American Humane believes that all dogs and cats adopted from public or private animal care and control facilities should be spayed or neutered (i.e., neutered).
Veterinarians should continue to use their common sense in recommending appropriate neutering ages for individual dogs and cats owned by clients, especially those clients who are well known and prone to allow unwanted pregnancy to occur prior to surgery.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO COMBAT PET OVERPOPULATION: If you are adding a pet to your family, make sure the animal comes from a legitimate shelter, non-profit rescue group or a responsible and humane breeder ,Always spay and neuter your pets ,Consider all the responsibilities and consequences of pet ownership before you decide to have a pet and always make a lifetime commitment to your pet ,Educate your children, friends, family and co-workers about pet overpopulation, aYou can help stop generations of suffering. Castrate your female pet and your male pet. Don't allow them to breed and add to the problem of pet overpopulation.doction and the importance of spaying and neutering.

Evolution of facial muscle anatomy in dogs.
Evolution of facial muscle anatomy in dogs.
Dogs have been shaped during the course of domestication both in their behavior and in their anatomical features. Here we show that domestication transformed the facial muscle anatomy of dogs specifically for facial communication with humans. A muscle responsible for the intense elevation of the inner eyebrow is uniformly present in dogs, but not in wolves. Behavioral data show that dogs also produce the eyebrow movement significantly more frequently and with greater intensity than wolves, with higher intensity movements produced exclusively by dogs. Interestingly, this movement enhances pedomorphism and resembles an expression that humans produce when they are sad, so its production in dogs may trigger a caring response. Our hypothesis is that the expressive eyebrows of dogs are the result of selection based on the preferences of humans.
Recent research suggests that eye contact between humans and dogs is crucial for dog-human social interaction. Dogs, but not wolves, make eye contact with humans when they cannot solve a problem on their own Eye contact also helps dogs know when communication is relevant and directed at them, because dogs tend to ignore human pointing gestures when human eyes are not visible.
Thus, the mutual gaze between dogs and humans seems to be a hallmark of the unique relationship between both species during human cultural evolution.

Is letting the dog sleep in your bed really a good idea?
Is letting the dog sleep in your bed really a good idea?
But is sleeping with your dog a good idea? Wouldn't it be detrimental to your sleep? Not really, according to a recent study. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix studied 40 adult dogs who slept in bed with their owners. The humans generally slept well and had no sleep disorders.
The dogs wore a piece of equipment called a Fitbark, an activity tracker attached to the collar to record whether the animal is resting and sleeping or active and playing. The people wore the Actiwatch 2, an activity monitor that records movement and whether sleep is deep or not. The two monitors were set up to sample movement every minute, and people also kept a sleep diary.
During the seven-day test, the researchers found that with a dog in the room, both humans and dogs slept reasonably well. The humans had an average sleep efficiency, or the percentage of time they spent sleeping while in bed, of 81%, while the dogs had an efficiency of 85%. In general, levels above 80% are considered satisfactory. People slept slightly better when the dog was not in bed; dogs slept just as well in bed or elsewhere in the room.
The key is to create a similar sleeping experience for the animal. Dogs may be attracted to humans' beds, especially if they are elevated, "because they are comfortable and in a strategically good position.

Puppy learns to 'talk' using technology.
Puppy learns to 'talk' using technology.
Every pet owner swears blindly that he can hold a conversation with his pet and that he is able not only to understand what we say, but also, in a sense, to respond. But what if your dog could talk, what would he say? That's what Christina Hunger, an American pathologist specializing in speech and language, tried to find out.
Christina works with Alternative Communication Systems, used to enable patients with speech difficulties to communicate with the world. Often these systems are pictures with icons that, when pressed, produce a corresponding word. Christina's idea was to see how her one-year-old dog Stella would behave in front of a similar system.
With a lot of training, the dog quickly learned to use the button to ask to leave the house. Her owner then started adding buttons with more words. The most surprising thing was when the dog began to combine words, forming sentences to better express herself. Things like I want to walk outside and I want food.
According to Christina, the dog is already at a level where she uses both compound sentences and simple words to express herself: in one day Stella is able to speak 20 times, using 11 different words from the system. According to research a dog understands an average of 165 words, and can reach a vocabulary of 250 words.

The importance of pet blood donation.
The importance of pet blood donation.
Pet blood donation is an act of love, and the process is quick and safe. A bag donated can save the lives of up to 4 animals!
Just like humans, dogs and cats can donate blood, and the transfusion is an alternative that can increase the chances of saving the lives of many pets that need this procedure for their recovery.
Currently, veterinary blood banks have difficulties in serving all their patients due to the shortage of donor pets. Therefore, we bring to you, pet owners, some information about this noble cause and how you can contribute for your dog or cat to become a "life saver" in the animal world.
Main cases in which blood transfusion is recommended: Deep anemia, tick disease, tumors, infectious diseases, complex surgeries, bleeding, trampling, poisoning, accidents, diseases, venomous animal bites, coagulation problems / platelet deficiency and protein deficiency.
For a safe blood donation it is important to choose a healthy donor. Therefore it is very important that the owner provides detailed information about the pet to the veterinarian responsible for the collection.
Pre-requisites to be a donor pet: Weight: at least 25 kg (dogs) and 4 kg (cats), with normal body condition score, Age: between 1 and 7 years, docile behavior that allows handling, No history of having received recent transfusions, heart problems or seizures, Not taking continuous medication, and have up to date vaccinations and worming and Not in heat, pregnant or nursing.
Before starting the collection procedure, all donor animals go through a complete screening to evaluate their health status. Even if it is detected that the pet cannot be a blood donor for some reason, it leaves the clinic or blood bank with a complete checkup, including the collection of a blood sample for a complete blood count and kidney, liver, parasitological, and immunological function tests. This enables a periodic follow-up of the pet's health.
Guardians can more easily monitor the health of their donor animals, since complete exams are performed before the donation procedure.

Dogs are able to differentiate foreign languages, says study.
Dogs are able to differentiate foreign languages, says study.
More than understanding calls, requests, orders, and intentions in "their" own language, dogs are able to tell when someone is speaking in a foreign language, and differentiate it from their "home language" - or the original language of their human "owners.
This is the conclusion of pioneering Hungarian research, recently published in the scientific journal NeuroImage, investigating 18 animals: the research is linked to the Laboratory of Neuroethology of Communication, which studies animal behavior, at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest.
"Dogs are really good in the human environment," said scientist Laura Cuaya, a researcher at the university and author of the study. "We found that dogs' brains can detect speech and differentiate languages without any explicit training. I think this reflects how connected dogs are to humans," she said.
The research monitored the brain activities of the 18 animals against various words in various languages, without using terms that are familiar to the dogs, to effectively "isolate" the languages.
According to the research, different areas of the dogs' brains reacted to different languages - especially between the language the animal is used to, and languages it does not know.
Certainly, this ability to be constant social learners gives dogs an advantage as a species, offering them a greater ability to understand their environments.

Caring for pets at the beach.
Caring for pets at the beach.
The first step when planning a trip with your pet is to find out whether the destination beach allows pets. There is no federal law that forbids animals on the beach, but each municipality is responsible for the regulations and standards to be followed. Currently the municipalities have increased the freedom, but there are still many municipalities that impose fines in case of non-compliance with the laws prohibiting animals on the beach.
Health up to date - Before traveling, it is essential to take your pet to see a veterinarian, have a complete check-up to verify its health, and make sure all vaccines and tick control are up to date.
Vaccination - Always keep your pet's vaccination card up to date, since this is your pet's document.
Vermifugation - Keep your pet always vermifugated. The prevention through antiparasitic is essential not only for travel, but for the entire life of the pet. Dirofilariasis: "dog heartworm" is a zoonosis (a disease that can be transmitted to humans) with a high mortality rate, caused by Dirofilaria spp., a worm (parasite/nematode) that lodges itself in the heart of pets.
Be careful with ears - When you go into the sea, water may get into your pet's ears. You should take the same care to protect this area as you do when bathing. Water in the ear can cause otitis (ear inflammation) in your pet.
Beware of sea water ingestion - Keep your pet hydrated by leaving plenty of drinking water available, as pets tend to dehydrate more easily at high temperatures.
End of the ride, time for a bath - At the end of the ride it is very important to give your pet a bath to remove all the salt and sand from its body. This practice helps prevent skin problems such as irritation, itching, and allergies.

Does a dog like music?
Does a dog like music?
Many people have questions about whether dogs like to listen to music. And the answer is yes! Dogs feel great listening to music.
Studies prove that when dogs listen to classical music, they suffer less from heart rates, becoming calmer and more relaxed.
In this way, music is a great ally for dogs that are very agitated, sad, anxious or nervous.
Studies show that soft, long-lasting sounds can bring a sense of security to dogs.
In this way, it is worth putting on a playlist of classic songs for your pet when he has to be alone for a long time or when you feel that he is agitated.
Other benefits that music can bring to dogs are Decreases stress and anxiety , Improves the dog's mood , Relieves missing the owner , Helps in fearful situations and Provides relaxation.
Very agitated music genres such as rock and heavy metal can make your pet more agitated and stressed.
In this way, the best choice of music to put on for dogs will always be the classical ones, because they bring a sense of relaxation and calm to the dog.
In addition to classical music, you can also choose to put sounds of nature, such as rain or waterfall noise.
It is worth mentioning that the volume of the music should not be loud. The ideal is to put the sound lower because dogs can hear much better than us. So, do not abuse the volume of the music.

Do you know the risks of obesity for dogs?
Do you know the risks of obesity for dogs?
Obesity in dogs is a growing problem in the pet population. According to recent research, in Brazil, 25% to 40% of animals are overweight or obese. Commonly adult dogs are the ones who suffer most from the pathology. Therefore, it is important to reinforce that obesity is a risk factor that can stimulate the emergence of heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, and joint problems, among others.
Generally, the main causes are inadequate diet and lack of physical activity. For, just as it happens with humans, the weight gain of pets occurs from the imbalance between energy consumption and expenditure. That is, the dog that eats in excess and does not exercise is more likely to accumulate fat in the body, which is very dangerous.
In addition, some breeds need extra attention to feeding, because they have a predisposition that facilitates weight gain, for example, the labrador, rottweiler, basset hound, beagle, pug, shih tzu and boxer. If you are the tutor of one of these breeds, your care needs to be doubled, because in addition to obesity, your dog is also willing to acquire all the other problems that come along with the disease.
However, regardless of the breed of the animal, establishing a routine of physical exercise, offering a balanced diet, and making periodic visits to the veterinarian are fundamental measures to avoid obesity in dogs and the consequences it can cause.
The first warning signs for overweight can be noticed by the guardian. Commonly, the animals lose the definition of the waist and when touching them it is difficult to feel their ribs. In addition, dogs usually show fatigue and less willingness to go for walks and play.
Obese dogs may present respiratory alterations, among the classic signs are short and fast breathing, shortness of breath and respiratory noises

The real age of dogs.
The real age of dogs.
DNA shows that multiplying canine life years by 7 is not an accurate method for comparing the aging of the animal with that of its best friends.
Researchers at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), in the United States, led by biologist Tina Wang, have challenged the widespread idea that, for dogs, one year of life is equivalent to seven years of a human being. According to the belief, adopted even by veterinarians, the age comparison between the species would be as follows: a 1-year-old puppy would be equivalent to a 7-year-old child and a more mature dog, at 7 years old, would be like a 49-year-old person.
An article published in the journal Cell Systems described the analysis of the DNA of 104 animals of the labrador breed, from 0 to 16 years old, to draw a more precise parallel between canine and human aging. The main discovery was that there is, yes, a correlation between the ages of the two species, but that it is not linear as popular wisdom dictates.
By analyzing blood samples from Labradors, the team led by Wang found that dogs age faster in the early years. As time goes by, the aging rhythm slows down: it is as if with 1 year, the dog had 30 human years; with 4 years, its biological age is equivalent to 52 years for a man.
The method used to measure and compare the different stages of development and aging between dogs and humans was to quantify DNA methylation, that is, how methyl groups (a set of three hydrogen atoms and one carbon atom, CH3, with one free electron) become incorporated into the genetic material over time.
The canine chronology goes more or less like this: at 2 years of age, the age is equivalent to 42 years; at 4 years of age, 52; at 7 years of age, which is equivalent to approximately 60 years for a man, aging slows down sharply, so much so that at 9 years of age, the age is equivalent to 65 human years.

There are dogs bred specifically for laboratory experiments.
There are dogs bred specifically for laboratory experiments.
Dogs bred for the sole purpose of laboratory experiments are common among research establishments. These institutions pay a premium price to the licensed class A breeders who supply the dogs. Even dogs with congenital defects are not off limits and can go for at least $700 each.
Some institutions also pay a significant amount for shelter mutts that will be used for laboratory experiments. As a result, there are people who may pose as interested adopters at these shelters who will actually sell the dogs to these facilities as class B dealers, according to the Humane Society. Obviously, this is a great money-making scheme for many unscrupulous individuals.
Before the dogs are subjected to the experiments, they undergo proper training to learn to trust humans. In this way, the scientists will find it easier to work on their subjects. But this method has received heavy criticism from animal rights activists who point out the cruelty of the whole process. After the dogs are made trustworthy, they actually go through extreme mental, physical and emotional stress due to the brutality of some of these experiments.
According to the American Anti-Vivisection Society, about 60,000 to 75,000 dogs are used in laboratories every year. Beagles are the most preferred breeds, but some laboratories also use Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Greyhounds, Schnauzers and Pit Bulls. The number of dogs for experiments, however, has dropped since the 1970s. According to NAVS, at least 200,000 dogs were used annually for research, testing, and teaching at that time.
You can do a lot to help dogs that are used in laboratory experiments. Use your purchasing power as a consumer and taxpayer, and stop buying products whose companies are known to test on animals. You use many of these products every day, such as toothpaste or shampoos, laundry detergent, household cleaning supplies, makeup, and other cleaning items. Research the companies online and switch to cruelty-free options if possible.

Paws for Thought.
Paws for Thought.
This study investigates whether interacting with a dog would have a positive effect on the mood and anxiety of college students. Students were assigned to watch videos of a dog or interact directly with a dog. Various measures were collected before and after their assigned conditions to assess their mood and anxiety levels and evaluate possible changes. Results indicated that participants in both conditions experienced a reduction in their anxiety and an improvement in mood over time, but those who interacted directly with a dog experienced a greater decline in anxiety and better mood scores.
College students have experienced higher rates of psychological distress than the general population, which supposedly increases significantly upon starting university and does not return to pre-university levels throughout their time at university. Therefore, it is very important to find ways to improve students' health and well-being. One way that can help is by interacting with animals. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if interacting with a dog would have a positive effect on the mood and anxiety of college students.
It is hoped that this study will help inform future best practices in designing student dog interventions, which in turn will facilitate better psychological well-being for college students.

Would you spend $50,000 to clone your dog?
Would you spend $50,000 to clone your dog?
How much would you spend to keep your furry friend around for another lifetime? Or would the thought never cross your mind?
Some people, it seems, are making the decision to clone their pets.
Melanin Rodriguez of ViaGen Pets, a service that clones cats, dogs and horses, said that there are still only a small number of people willing to clone their pets.
"Cloning is very expensive," Rodriguez said. "It's $50,000 to clone a dog and $35,000 to clone a cat. So it's not something that everybody is doing."
She said one of her most popular services is to preserve the pet's DNA for possible cloning in the future.
She said they are cloning more and more animals every year.
Last February, scientists cloned America's first endangered species, a black-footed ferret duplicated from the genes of an animal that died more than 30 years ago.

Dogs in the White House.
Dogs in the White House.
All eyes were on the newly elected POTUS Joe Biden and FLOTUS Dr. Jill Biden when they moved into the White House on January 20, 2021. All canine eyes, however, are on Champ and Major, the new FDOTUS or "First Dogs of America." Pet lovers around the world are giddy with excitement, as the White House will once again be America's most famous dog house. But for the champ and major, President-elect Joe Biden will still just be "puppy daddy.
Both Champ and Major are German shepherds, and Major will be the first shelter dog to be "indogged." The Bidens adopted Major in March 2018 after Biden's daughter Ashley saw a Facebook post seeking adoptive families for a litter of puppies with health issues. The Bidens had always wanted a sibling for Champ and quickly contacted the Delaware Humane Association, where Major was recovering from treatment due to toxin exposure. Fortunately, all five of Major's littermates recovered and were adopted.
For Champ, the move to Washington DC as a presidential pet will be familiar, as he spent eight years living in the vice president's residence about two miles from the White House during Biden's tenure as vice president. The Bidens adopted Champ at Christmas 2008, when Biden said, "I've had German shepherds since I was a kid and I've really trained and shown them in the past." 1 Champ, however, must feel at home in the Oval Office, as he played with Bo and Sunny, the Obama family dogs.
