Republican debate Who were the winners and losers
The first Republican presidential debate was a rowdy affair that saw the eight candidates leap headlong into heated exchanges.
There were some who thought it would be boring without Donald Trump - the ultimate showman - but that was decidedly not the case. The former president may have been the life of the party during primary debates back in 2016, but the eight rivals who travelled to Wisconsin proved they could bring some excitement without his help.
Some candidates stood out from the pack, however - and some seemed to languish on the side-lines.
Here's a rundown of the winners and losers.
WINNERS
Vivek Ramaswamy: The man who never ran for public office - and didn't even vote for a president from 2004 to 2020 - simply dominated this Republican debate.
With a broad smile and a quick tongue, he frequently seemed to be the only candidate on the stage who was enjoying himself. That may partly be because this political novice has exceeded expectations, and is essentially playing with house money while he takes centre stage.
He easily fended off swipes from his fellow candidates, suggesting that Mr Christie was auditioning for a show on left-leaning news channel MSNBC and that Ms Haley was angling for spots on the board of defence contractors with her positions on Ukraine.
"I'm the only person on the stage who isn't bought and paid for," he said during a discussion of climate change - prompting cries of outrage from his rivals.Time and time again, Mr Ramaswamy positioned himself as the outsider against a bunch of political establishment insiders. Many of his views - calling on Ukraine to cede territory to Russia, using military force to secure the US-Mexico border, and banning US companies from doing business with China - are well outside the political mainstream even within the Republican Party. But as Mr Trump demonstrated in 2016, even outlandish, impractical policy proposals can be effective in generating attention.
Mr Ramaswamy may not have the political fuel to challenge Mr Trump for the nomination, and he may not even want to, but the evening's debate ensures that he's going to continue to be a factor in this race in the months ahead.
LOSERS
Ron DeSantis: At the beginning of the year, the race for the Republican nomination seemed like it would be a two-man contest between Mr DeSantis and Mr Trump. Since then, the Florida governor has sagged in the polls.
If the rest of the Republican pack hasn't caught up to him yet, it may very well have him after this debate.
It wasn't a terrible performance - he had his moments, particularly when he spoke about his record of military service and his calls for more aggressive government policies to deal with the opioid epidemic.
He was on the side-lines for all the key moments of the debate, however. Mr Ramaswamy ran circles around him. Other candidates, like Mr Pence and Ms Haley, elbowed him out of the way on issues like abortion and US aid to Ukraine. He seemed on uneven footing when the topic turned to Mr Trump and his recent indictments.
This was not the kind of performance needed to close the gap with Mr Trump. The man who was once billed as the future of the Republican Party was simply a non-factor.
Asa Hutchinson and Doug Burgum: Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson was the last candidate to qualify for the Milwaukee debate. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum paid his way onto the stage with a gimmick - offering enough people $20 gift cards if they donated $1 to his campaign.
Both candidates desperately needed to show that they deserved to be there, and both were mostly afterthoughts.
Mr Hutchinson's criticisms of Mr Trump seemed weak sauce compared to Mr Christie's more pointed attacks. And Mr Burgum's awe-shucks small-state conservatism never really stood out.
The qualification standards become more rigorous for next month's primary debate in California, and neither candidate did enough on Wednesday night to build the kind of support they will need to make another appearances on the debate stage likely.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal
Martin Odegaard’s penalty was enough to beat Crystal Palace and record back-to-back wins at the start of the campaign, despite us finishing with 10 men.
The captain stroked home a spot-kick on 53 minutes after Eddie Nketiah was brought down in the box by Sam Johnstone, before Takehiro Tomiyasu was dismissed for two yellow cards - our first dismissal in the Premier League since May 2022.
However Mikel Arteta’s team clung onto the points thanks to a solid rearguard display from that point onwards to kick off the season with six points from six.
First half frustration
While the teams were greeted with pyro, flames, loud music and cheerleaders, the early proceedings struggled to match the same excitement. The host had the better opportunities in front of goal, and Eberechi Eze forced Aaron Ramsdale into a routine save on 15 minutes before Cheick Doucoure blasted a shot from 30 yards into the home supporters behind our shot-stopper.
We gradually grew into the half, and after working through the gears created the half’s big opportunity on 28 minutes when Kai Havertz won possession and threaded the ball between Eagles centre-backs Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi for Eddie Nketiah to run onto. He held off the challenge of both before trickling a shot past Sam Johnstone but saw it strike the base of the post.
The tide was turning and soon another chance came Nketiah’s way when Odegaard and Declan Rice linked up to allow the striker to go one-on-one with Johnstone but his dinked effort flew over the bar, and four minutes before the end of the opening 45 the skipper tried his luck from range with a dipping shot that Johnstone had to tip over before Gabriel Martinelli volleyed a Thomas Partey cross wide of the mark.
Big decisions
We carried that momentum into the second half and within eight minutes we managed to find the elusive breakthrough. After we won a free-kick, the Eagles switched off and some quick thinking by Martinelli saw him sneak Nketiah in on goal, who was brought down by Johnstone. After a VAR check, Odegaard was allowed to step up and send the home keeper the wrong way from 12 yards.
Chances to potentially kill the game were and Partey had shot beaten away before Havertz drilled an attempt wide of the post, but then on 67 minutes the game took another twist. Tomiyasu, who had earlier been booked for delaying a throw-in, was shown a second yellow after Jordan Ayew spun away from him, but replays showed the contact was minimal.
Getting over the line
From that point onwards it was about digging in and trying to hold onto our one-goal lead as Palace probed to try and utilise their man advantage. Gabriel and Jorginho were sent on to steady the ship as Mikel Arteta did what he could to see us through the final quarter.
It did the trick, and we restricted Palace to fleeting moments of danger despite them occupying our half the most of the remainder of the contest, but their big chance came and went when Odsonne Edouard missed a glorious chance when he screwed a header well wide from a good Tyrick Mitchell cross.
Despite seven minutes of stoppage-time being played, we managed to successfully nullify Roy Hodgson’s team to just one more opportunity when Mitchell lashed a half-volley over after a scramble in the box, and the final whistle was greeted with passionate celebrations by our players, delighted they’d managed to overcome adversity to record successive wins.
Facts and stats
Tonight was our 200th Premier League away clean sheet, becoming only the third side to do so after Manchester United (205) and Chelsea (204). Under Mikel Arteta, we've kept a clean sheet in 28 of our 68 away games (41 per cent), only under Bruce Rioch do they have a better Premier League record (8/19 – 42 per cent - min. five games).
We have now recorded successive away league wins over Palace for the first time since a run of three wins between October 2013 and August 2015, while we are now unbeaten in 13 successive London derbies in the competition
Martin Odegaard took and scored his first penalty in a league game since doing so for Vitesse against De Graafschap in the Eredivise in May 2019. Indeed, since the start of last season, he’s just the third player to score at least 10 Premier League goals away from home after Erling Haaland and Harry Kane (both 16).
This was Roy Hodgson’s first league defeat at Selhurst Park since returning in April , while they’ve only won their first home league game of the season once in 11 Premier League seasons since 2013-14
Bukayo Saka made his 82nd consecutive appearance for us in the Premier League this evening, equalling the club record in the competition set by Paul Merson between February 1995 and February 1997.
What’s next
We have another capital clash on Saturday when Fulham head to Emirates Stadium in a traditional 3pm kick-off, and then eight days later Manchester United come to town on Sunday, September 3.

Washington Commanders end Baltimore Ravens preseason win streak at 24 games
the least important winning streak in American professional sports has ended.
Washington Commanders kicker Joey Slye drilled a 49-yard field goal with nine seconds left to give his team a 29-28 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, which entered Monday’s game having won 24 straight preseason games dating back to 2016.
Washington came one yard from tying the game at 28 with four minutes remaining, but Ravens cornerback Kyu Kelly stonewalled Commanders fullback Alex Armah after he caught a pass in the flat from third-string quarterback Jake Fromm to thwart the Commanders' two-point conversion.
The Ravens, with quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. leading the way, couldn't run out the clock. Washington faced a 4th-and-11 on their own side of the field with 69 seconds remaining and were bailed out by a pass interference call that kept the drive alive.
Fromm and Kazmeir Allen connected for the final eight yards to bring Slye's attempt within a manageable range.
“We were just grinding, scrapping, clawing," Fromm told USA TODAY Sports .
With his focus on figuring out where the Ravens' pressure was coming from, Fromm said he wasn't thinking much about putting a stake through their streak. But Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said that those who considered the streak a collection of meaningless victories has it all wrong.
“Because you never played," Harbaugh said. "You were never out there in a preseason game. You were never fighting for a spot. And then you have the audacity to say that the effort somebody puts in to fight and win a game like that is meaningless.”
There’s no one reason the streak lasted as long as it did, Harbaugh said. It's a reflection of how the organization practices, holds meetings, develops young players and scouts the collegiate and pro game for depth pieces.

How 10 man West Ham beat Chelsea 3-1 for first Premier League win of season
Aguerd, Antonio and Paqueta scored for the hosts, while Chukwuemeka did for the visitors. Areola saved a Fernandez penalty and Aguerd was later sent off.
David Moyes spoke after the win: "Extremely satisfying. They're really good. They played very well last weekend and well today.
"We hung in there at times, we were resolute. Even at 10 men we stuck in and got another goal.
"I didn't think we played well in the first half. We got a goal from a James Ward-Prowse assist. We know he's always capable of that. We never played when we got the ball after that and they dominated.
"We tried to get closer to them in the second half and we did. We stuck at it, did the basics well and got the three points.
"We've always been not bad at (set pieces). You can't score without good deliveries. Hopefully (Ward-Prowse) will bring the good deliveries. Good start for him today.
"I told (Michail Antonio) it was a brilliant finish, a centre forward's goal.
"Chelsea are a really good side. I'd be surprised if they're not challenghging the top teams.
"The crowd helped today. We're just back from Prague. They'll need to stick with us. We have a few things we need to improve.
"I have no doubt we'll probably get another couple of players in before the window."

Steelers defeat Bills 27-15
If this was the dress rehearsal for the Steelers for the 2023 regular season, the team looks ready for the big lights.
After sitting several key defensive starters in last week's preseason opener at Tampa Bay, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin put all hands on deck for the team's second preseason game Saturday night against Buffalo at Acrisure Stadium.
The offense scored touchdowns on its only two possessions, while the defense did its job, as well, keeping Buffalo's first-team offense out of the end zone in a 27-15 shellacking.
Kenny Pickett completed 3 of 4 passes for 43 yards and a touchdown, a 25-yard strike to tight end Pat Freiermuth, capping off a day that saw the first-team offense produce 14 points on just seven plays against Buffalo's first-team defense.
Second-year running back Jaylen Warren used blocks from guards James Daniels and Isaac Seumalo, left tackle Dan Moore Jr. and wide receiver Diontae Johnson on the edge to spring loose for a 62-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 on the Steelers' opening possession.
"It was blocked up perfectly," said Warren. "I was untouched, which says more about the offense than it does me.
"That's why I scored. Everybody else did their job, and that's what made my job easy."
After the defense forced the Bills, who were also playing their starters, off the field in a three-and-out on their opening possession, second-year wide receiver Calvin Austin III returned a punt 54 yards to the Buffalo 25.
On the first play after the big return, Pickett threw a pass to Freiermuth's back shoulder down the left hash, throwing him open against linebacker Matt Milano, who had inside leverage.
"It was a heck of of a ball," said Freiermuth. "He kind of threw it away from, I think it was Milano, and saved me from a big hit. It was a heck of a throw against a heck of a linebacker."

Spain defeat England in final of record breaking Women's World Cup
Spain defeated England 1-0 in the final of the Women's World Cup on Sunday, capping off a tournament that has broken attendance and TV records and raised hopes of a surge in interest for the women's game.
Co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the ninth edition of the global showpiece event was the first to be held in the southern hemisphere.
While local interest ebbed when Australia exited in the semi-finals, just shy of two million fans will have passed through the gates in nine host cities after Sunday's final crowd of 75,784 is added to the tally.
An Olga Carmona goal was the difference between the two sides in a pulsating game that saw Spain create the majority of the clear-cut chances.
Thousands of fans milled around Stadium Australia in Sydney hours before kick-off on Sunday, with troupes of drummers and stilt walkers creating a festival atmosphere.
England and Spain were both making their first appearance at a Women's World Cup final, while England's wait for a first trophy since the men's tournament in 1966 goes on.
Australia's semi-final loss to England on Wednesday drew an average of 7.13 million viewers on the channels of local broadcaster Seven Network, the highest viewership ever recorded by research firm OzTAM, which launched in 2001.
Matildas matches sold out months in advance, and organisers expect the average attendance to overtake 30,000 once all 64 matches are completed.
The last Women's World Cup in France four years ago attracted more than 1.1. million fans to 52 matches with an average crowd of 21,756.
Demand was weaker in New Zealand, whose team went out in the group stages. FIFA gave away thousands of tickets and some games attracted as few as 7,000 fans, although White Ferns matches broke records for a soccer crowd in the country.

Inter Miami vs. Nashville Messi wins Leagues Cup after penalty shootout
What a match. What a finish. And what a run for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami.
Inter Miami outdueled Nashville SC in a penalty kick shootout 10-9 to settle a 1-1 tie in the Leagues Cup final on Saturday night in Nashville, Tennessee.
Messi scored in the 23rd minute. Nashville’s Fafá Picault scored in the 57th minute. And both sides were inches away from winning it in the final minutes of regulation before needing 22 total penalty kicks to decide it.
Still, Messi’s presence cannot be denied.
“We were able to put ourselves in position where we could have stole it,” Nashville coach Gary Smith said. “You’re looking at the greatest player on the planet possibly being the difference on what happened today.”
Messi wins Leagues Cup best player award
Messi – who scored 10 goals in his first tournament action with Inter Miami – won the Leagues Cup top scorer and best player awards.
Inter Miami’s Drake Callendar – who blocked two kicks in the final minutes by reigning MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar, and Nashville goalkeeper Elliot Panicco’s final penalty kick to end it – won best goalkeeper of the tournament.
And the celebration began.
Messi’s teammates hoisted him in the air as they celebrated on the pitch..
Inter Miami coach Tato Martino and his coaching staff settled for a group hug full of smiles and some tears on the bench.
And David Beckham hugged his wife, Victoria, and fellow Inter Miami co-owners Jorge and Jose Mas in the stands as their vision for Messi in Miami came to fruition.
“It was a tight game for both teams. Any team could have won it,” said Martino, who coached Messi before with FC Barcelona and Argentina. “I was very impressed with the win. We came together."
We're just seven games into the Messi experience in Miami and MLS. And Messi has already helped Inter Miami win its first championship since joining the league in 2020.
Although this feels like what should happen when the world’s greatest soccer star joins what was an otherwise lowly MLS team before his arrival, this Leagues Cup final was fought to the very end.

Canada wildfires Residents scramble to flee fires in Kelowna and Yellowknife
An official deadline to evacuate Yellowknife as a wildfire looms on its outskirts has lapsed, as residents scramble to leave by air and road.
About 22,000 people - or roughly half the population in Canada's Northwest Territories - are now displaced in the country's worst fire season on record.
A separate blaze in the west, that threatens Kelowna, British Columbia, has grown one hundredfold in 24 hours.
Officials have warned the fires "are very active and very unpredictable".
"The stress of leaving your home not knowing if it will be there when you return is now a reality faced by thousands," Harjit Sajjan, Canada's minister of emergency preparedness, said at a news conference on Friday.
He said the federal government did not yet know the full extent of the damage wrought in what has been an "incredibly challenging week for Canadians".
The McDougall Creek Wildfire in Kelowna, in the western province of British Columbia, poses a particularly concerning threat to lives and properties after it grew significantly overnight.
The BC Wildfire Service said the fire, which had been mapped at 1,100 hectares early on Thursday evening, was now estimated at 6,800 hectares.
"The winds were very concerning and we didn't know where things are going," Mr Sarjjan told reporters.
Local BC officials declared a state of emergency on Friday morning. More than 2,500 properties have since been evacuated, with thousands more on alert to leave on short notice.
The fast-moving fire is bearing down on a city with a population of about 150,000 people, and officials are already reporting "significant structural loss", including in Trader's Cove in the Okanagan Valley.
"We fought hard last night to protect our community," West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund said at a news conference.
He said the actions taken to rescue members of the public and save homes in the area had been akin to "a hundred years of firefighting all at once in one night".
No deaths have yet been reported, but Mr Brolund said the fire remains "dynamic" and "as significant today as it was last night", a preview of what may come in the days ahead.
Juliana Loewen, a Kelowna resident who is not currently under evacuation orders, is huddling with more than a dozen other people at her home on Okanagan Lake as they await updates.
She told the BBC how locals had watched a plume of smoke coming over the mountainside like an "ominous cloud of destruction" and how some on the Trader's Cove side jumped into the lake as the fire spread and exit routes were blocked.
Her brother and grandmother evacuated and came to her house after "the fire jumped very quickly from one tree to an entire area, threatening an entire residential community".
Roads are jammed up, businesses have shut down and neighbours are on their lawns tossing valuables into their vehicles. "It's very apocalyptic," she said.
Residents are used to the fires because of Kelowna's "California-style climate" but the heat, dryness and wind seen in recent days had created the "perfect conditions for a firestorm", Ms Loewen added.
The airspace around Kelowna International Airport has now been closed to everything other than aerial firefighters.

Rich Men North of Richmond The Hit song that has diveded the US
Oliver Anthony's Rich Men North of Richmond has become a huge viral hit, and the latest in a series of cultural flashpoints that reflect a deeply divided America, writes Caryn James.
In the culture wars that continue to divide US politics, the right wing may have found its latest hero in Oliver Anthony, whether he likes it or not. Last week, Anthony's song Rich Men North of Richmond, which criticises Washington and big government, dropped on a West Virginia radio station's YouTube channel and the unknown singer-songwriter became a viral sensation with more than two million views over two days and more than 20 million so far. In the roughly produced video, Anthony, a burly guy with a big red beard and a guitar, stands in a wooded area, looking and sounding like an everyday blue-collar worker. "I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day/ Overtime hours for bullshit pay," he sings. "It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to/ For people like me and people like you."
It wasn't just the working-class "you" he was addressing who paid attention though. Within days, right-wing politicians were championing the song, which neatly fits some conservative narratives, criticising government overtaxing and those on welfare. Among others, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene called the song "the anthem of the forgotten Americans". Kari Lake, the Trump-backed Republican who ran for governor of Arizona, said it was "the anthem of this moment in American history". NBC News picked up the story on its website and called it a "conservative anthem". On the left, Connecticut Democrat Senator Chris Murphy posted that "progressives should listen to this", and that the issues Anthony was highlighting were "all problems the left has better solutions to than the right". Media attention for the song mushroomed.
Whatever the genuine musical appeal of Anthony's song, it broke into the news and the culture in part because of its strong political message. However, in a video posted the day before Rich Men dropped, Anthony said: "I sit pretty dead centre on politics". Since the viral success of his track, he has not been giving interviews and did not respond to a request from BBC Culture for comment.
Rich Men North of Richmond is the latest in a series of controversial cultural flashpoints that highlight the ties between pop culture and the strongly divided US political landscape. Other recent examples include Jason Aldean's country hit Try That In A Small Town, with a video that had images of violence and Black Lives Matter protests, and lyrics that suggest "good old boy" Americans can maintain law themselves. The music critic Jon Caramanica characterised the song on his New York Times podcast as "dog-whistle stuff, red meat for the [conservative] base". However Aldean denied that the song had anything to do with race and was instead a celebration of small-town values, calling out the criticism as "not only meritless, but dangerous".

Bitcoin drops to new two month low as world markets sell off
Top cryptocurrency bitcoin hit a fresh two-month low on Friday, breaking out of its recent tight range as a wave of risk averse sentiment swept through world markets.
On Thursday, bitcoin fell 7.2% in its biggest one-day drop since November 2022 when top exchange FTX collapsed.
It then slipped to a two-month low of $26,172 during Asian trading hours on Friday, its lowest since June 16 . it had partly recovered to $26,441, down 0.8% on the day.
Global markets have been hit by a wave of selling, with Wall Street's main indexes closing lower on Thursday and Asian shares heading for a third week of losses over concerns about China's economy and fears that U.S. interest rates would stay higher for longer given a resilient economy.
Ether, the second biggest cryptocurrency, was steady at $1,685 , having also dropped sharply on Thursday.
Some analysts attributed crypto's drop to a Wall Street Journal report that Elon Musk's SpaceX sold its bitcoin holdings after writing the value down by $373 million. Musk is influential among crypto enthusiasts, and bitcoin prices have previously moved in response to his tweets.
The SpaceX report was the "immediate catalyst" for bitcoin's sell-off, said Ben Laidler, global markets strategist at eToro.
"The broader driver is that crypto assets are not immune to the deepening risk-off selling pressure seen across all asset classes," Laidler added.
Joseph Edwards, head of research at Enigma Securities, attributed the bitcoin price move to low volatility and a lack of enthusiasm from retail investors.
Bitcoin had been hovering close to $30,000 in recent months, having gradually recovered this year after dropping sharply in 2022 when various crypto firms collapsed, leaving investors with large losses.
Crypto markets were boosted in June by BlackRock applying to launch a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund in the United States. Some investors interpreted that move as an indication that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission would approve spot bitcoin ETF applications from various asset managers, including Grayscale.
"The big concern right now is that this might be a frontrun on the outcome of Grayscale's lawsuit against the SEC; optimism on that front has been keeping markets inflated above whether they might otherwise be for much of the summer," Edwards said.

Wander Franco ‘Unlikely’ to Return to MLB Amid Investigation
Wander Franco ‘Unlikely’ to Return to MLB Amid Investigation, per Report
Rays star shortstop Wander Franco is under investigation in the Dominican Republic for an alleged relationship with a minor.
The investigation began earlier this week following social media rumors surrounding the shortstop that alleged that Franco was engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a minor. MLB subsequently opened its own investigation into the allegations on Sunday.
Now, just days into the investigation, a new report casts doubt on the future of Franco’s baseball career. On Tuesday morning, baseball insider Héctor Gómez reported that a source close to the matter says it is “very unlikely that Wander Franco will play in MLB again, judging by the results of the investigations that are currently being carried out, which directly commit him to the accusations against him.”
Franco played in 112 games for Tampa Bay this season, batting .281 with 17 home runs, 58 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. The 22-year-old was also named to his first All-Star team. He signed an 11-year, $182 million contract with the Rays in November 2021, the largest contract in team history for the notoriously low-budget franchise.
