These aren't as difficult as they seem after doing about 4 or 5 of them. One key thing is how well you can see the work as you go. Usually if you can see what you're doing you can succeed. No-Clean flux is used here and it usually works fine. Real flux works better when needed. The knife edge tip works but you may have more success with the smallest pointed tip you have. Also it's important not to overheat the chip. If you have a steady enough hand (Which we don't) and very thin solder you could touch the tip of the iron to the pad only and the solder will flow around the lead so you don't need to touch the soldering iron even to the lead of the chip. This is a sort of spinoff from the electromagnet and pyrolytic graphite model that didn't work out so well but it is also based on a version designed several years ago. The electromagnet turns on and off with the LED and turns the boat while the permanent magnet turns it back. (think compasses only bigger) This is very slow so had to be 8x time lapsed. The wider the angle of side to side turning the faster the boat will move. Of course if the electromagnet were replaced with a permanent magnet on a servo it would go much faster still. Stay tuned:)

Stay tuned:) note: maybe it's just beginner's luck or a fly in the ointment or else over optimism but while this worked three days in a row the results couldn't be replicated after that so take it as a theory please.

This boat weighs 4 5/8 ounces so there is a lot of drag but it seems to continue to accelerate. The reasoning behind two magnets separated by about 90 degrees is that they can easily be maneuvered in almost a complete circle without accidentally going completely around. There is some added weight on the back of the boat to make the center of mass farther from the center of the torque from the magnets interacting with Earth's magnetic field. Stay tuned:)
