Cello Song Via Drake
I apologise, this has nothing of Drake on it, except his words I poorly sing. I became aware of the song, melancholy, from a Blacklist episode in season 1.
My primary motivation with these covers is to find songs with an ear whig quality. I don't seek to copy them, but give myself a reminder, and access to them. Before I was 21, every song I'd ever loved I'd bought half a dozen times as things got taken from me. I still don't have those songs for good, but I find I can remind myself of what I treasured. Melancholy numbers like this have a season, like Mitchell's Blue. I prefer gospel. I prefer progressive rock. I prefer classical. I do not like grunge or rap.

Five Leaves Left is the debut studio album by English folk musician Nick Drake. Recorded between 1968 and 1969, it was released in 1969 by record label Island.
===
Strange face, with your eyes
So pale and sincere
Underneath you know well
You have nothing to fear
For the dreams that came to you when so young
Told of a life
Where spring is sprung
You would seem so frail
In the cold of the night
When the armies of emotion
Go out to fight
But while the earth sinks to its grave
You sail to the sky
On the crest of a wave
So forget this cruel world
Where I belong
I'll just sit and wait
And sing my song
And if one day you should see me in the crowd
Lend a hand and lift me
To your place in the cloud

Too Close to the Flame
A campaign to eliminate sun beds after Clare Oliver discovered it had killed her
===
Enjoy, dance, delight
But not too close to the light.
Icarus fell, but he lived and flew
Who'd deny him his wish .. you?
His father's advice, your mother warned
But who listened? Who saw?
All those excuses denied you:
My mother gave me drugs
I didn't know it was so long
I'm singing everybody's song
If it feels good it isn't wrong.
Grin, burst, flash
But not too close to the lamp
Icarus fell, but he lived and flew
Who'd deny him his wish .. you?
The desire to live. The desire to fly.
The desire to be all you can buy.
All those excuses denied you:
If it gets bad I'll quit
I don't know who gave it, or why
When you feel down it helps you fly
I didn't think I would die.
Pain, resolve, despair
But not so close as to be seen
Icarus fell, but he lived and flew
Who'd deny him his wish .. you?
A pain in the head. A pain in the neck.
The pain that lodged inside your heart.
All those excuses you denied.
It was all your fault.
The others had tried.
The dream was lost
And so you died.

Hello by oDDBall via Ritchie
"Hello" is a song by Lionel Richie. Taken as the third single from Richie's multi-platinum album Can't Slow Down, the song was released in 1984 and reached number one on three Billboard music charts: the pop chart (for two weeks), the R&B chart (for three weeks), and the adult contemporary chart (for six weeks). The song also went to number one on the UK Singles Chart. It is considered by some to be Richie's signature song.
The song is particularly memorable for the line "Hello, is it me you're looking for?". In an interview broadcast in the UK on Channel 4's Top 100 Number One Hits, Richie said he had been thanked by a large number of normally tongue-tied men who had proposed marriage after a slow dance to the song.

The Spinning Wheel Song
I fell in love with the song, having heard it on an Irish compilation
===
"The Spinning Wheel" was written in the mid-1800s by an Irish lawyer and poet named John Francis Waller. It's a beautiful ballad written in waltz time (3/4 time). To understand the song better, you'll want to know that "a chara" means "dear" and "The Coolin" refers to a traditional Irish air called "An Chúilfhionn," which translates to "The Fair-Haired One."
===
Mellow the moonlight to shine is beginning
Close by the window young Eileen is spinning
Bent o'er the fire her blind grandmother sitting
Is crooning and moaning and drowsily knitting.
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Trills the sweet voice of the young maiden singing.
"Eileen, a chara, I hear someone tapping"
"'Tis the ivy dear mother against the glass flapping"
"Eily, I surely hear somebody sighing"
"'Tis the sound mother dear of the autumn winds dying."
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Trills the sweet voice of the young maiden singing.
"What's the noise that I hear at the window I wonder"
"'Tis the little birds chirping, the holly-bush under"
"What makes you be shoving and moving your stool on
And singing all wrong the old song of 'The Coolin'?"
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Trills the sweet voice of the young maiden singing.
There's a form at the casement, the form of her true love
And he whispers with face bent, "I'm waiting for you, love"
Get up on the stool, through the lattice step lightly
And we'll rove in the grove while the moon's shining brightly."
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Trills the sweet voice of the young maiden singing.
The maid shakes her head, on her lips lays her fingers
Steps up from the stool, longs to go and yet lingers
A frightened glance turns to her drowsy grandmother
Puts one foot on the stool, spins the wheel with the other.
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Trills the sweet voice of the young maiden singing.
Lazily, easily, swings now the wheel round
Slowly and lowly is heard now the reel's sound
Noiseless and light to the lattice above her
The maid steps then leaps to the arms of her lover.
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Trills the sweet voice of the young maiden singing.
Slower and slower and slower the wheel rings
Lower and lower and lower the reel rings
E're the reel and the wheel stopped their ringing and moving
Through the grove the young lovers by moonlight are roving.

Longer by oDDBall
"Longer" is a song written and recorded by the American singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg. The song can be found on Fogelberg's 1979 album Phoenix. It was also included on his 1982 greatest hits album as well as various other retrospective and compilation recordings.
Fogelberg, who had released more rock-oriented songs throughout the 1970s, jokingly described "Longer" in the liner notes to one of his retrospective albums as "the song that put me on the elevators."[1] He wrote the song while vacationing in Maui, "lounging in a hammock one night and looking up at the stars. It just seems this song was drifting around the universe, saw me, and decided I'd give it a good home." Accompanying Fogelberg's vocals is an acoustic guitar (played by the singer) as well as a flugelhorn solo by Jerry Hey.
Lyrically, the song compares various events ("Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens") with his emotional attachment to the one he loves ("I've been in love with you").

She Ain't Heavy
This video is about my daughter
===
Sunday morning. Church lunch. Patiently waiting to get tea. A little girl brings everything to a stop as she wanders around. Her dress is partly caught in her stockings and a waist bow is undone and dragging. The elderly lady getting tea stops everything to put the child right. I'm amused and point out it is good she has done that as the child could trip over it. And the lady replied that was exactly what she was thinking. I get my tea and and it is hot. Another young girl stand directly in front of me and I'm kind of glad I didn't spill the hot tea. She is holding a bottle of water that seems half her height. She looks at me, and I at her, wondering what she wants. I take the bottle from her and undo the lid. I am proud that I didn't spill the tea doing that. I hand back the bottle without the lid and she takes a sip. It gradually dawns on me that something is wrong. But before I ask the questions I should have thought of previously, her mother is at my shoulder. The mother is brilliant. "That is not yours" she says, without getting shrill but sounding hurt and exasperated with her daughter. The girl immediately moves to shield the bottle from her mother. I quickly apologise realising I could do nothing beneficial but withdraw. I feel shame at being so thoughtless. So I've made a video.

You were born into a strange world.
Like a candle, you were meant to share the fire.
I don't know where we come from, and I don't know where we go.
But my arms were made to hold you, so I will never let you go.
'Cause you were born to change this life.
You were born to chase the light.
You were born
Love your mother, yeah she's s good one.
She'll build you armor; keep you warm as a hen.
The stars may fall and the rains may pour,
But I will love you evermore.
You were born to make this right.
You were born to chase the light.
You were born
Oh my precious, oh my love, when they come to take me,
I will hold you from above.
I don't know why we're here, and I don't know how,
But I'm here with you now, I am here with you now.
'Cause you were born to make this right.
'Cause you were born to change this life.
'Cause you were born to chase the light.

I first noticed this on the Blacklist season 1. I don't ascribe to the theology implicit to the sentimentality, but feel it is awesome beautiful as a parent's tribute to the hope of a child.

Wednesday Morning 3am
Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. is the debut album by folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, released October 19, 1964. It was produced by Tom Wilson and engineered by Roy Halee. It initially flopped, but was re-released in January 1966 to capitalize on their newfound radio success and reached #30 on the Billboard pop charts. It is perhaps best known for the acoustic version of "The Sound of Silence". In several concerts, Art Garfunkel related that during the photo sessions for the album cover, several hundred pictures were taken that were unusable due to the "all-familiar suggestion" on the wall in the background, which inspired the song "A Poem on the Underground Wall".

Seriously awful lyric writing must be celebrated
I can hear the soft breathing
Of the girl that I love
As she lies here beside me
Asleep with the night
And her hair, in a fine mist
Floats on my pillow
Reflecting the glow
Of the winter moonlight
She is soft, she is warm
But my heart remains heavy
And I watch as her breasts
Gently rise, gently fall
For I know with the first light of dawn
I'll be leaving
And tonight will be
All I have left to recall
Oh, what have I done,
Why have I done it?
I've committed a crime,
I have broken the law
For twenty-five dollars
And pieces of silver
I held up and robbed
A hard liquor store
My life seems unreal,
My crime an illusion
A scene badly written
In which I must play
Yet I know as I gaze
At my young love beside me
The morning is just a few hours away

The First Noel
The First Nowell (also written The First Noël) is a traditional English Christmas carol, most likely from the 18th century, although possibly earlier. The word Noel comes from the French word Noël meaning "Christmas", from the Latin word natalis ("birth").
In its current form it is of Cornish origin, and it was first published in Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Christmas Carols (1833), both of which were edited by William B. Sandys and arranged, edited and with extra lyrics written by Davies Gilbert. Today, it is usually performed in a four-part hymn arrangement by the English composer John Stainer, first published in his Christmas Carols, New and Old of 1871.
The melody is unusual among English folk melodies in that it consists of one musical phrase repeated twice, followed by a variation on that phrase. All three phrases end on the third of the scale. The refrain, also unusually, merely repeats the melody of the verse. It is thought to be a corruption of an earlier melody sung in a church gallery setting "The First O Well"; a conjectural reconstruction of this earlier version can be found in the New Oxford Book of Carols.

"Can't Help Falling in Love", by George Weiss, Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore, is a pop song based on "Plaisir d'amour" by Jean Paul Egide Martini. It was adapted for inclusion in the 1961 film Blue Hawaii, starring Elvis Presley. During the following four decades, it went on to be covered by numerous artists, most notably by the British reggae group UB40, whose 1993 version topped the U.S. and UK Singles charts. You light up my life
"You Light Up My Life" is a ballad written by Joe Brooks and originally recorded by Kasey Cisyk for the soundtrack to the film of the same name. The song was performed in the film by its lead, Didi Conn, who lip synched Cisyk's version. Pat Boone's daughter, Debby Boone, was recruited to record the single, which became a massive success, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a record-setting ten consecutive weeks. It easily became the most successful single of the 1970s in the United States and set a new Hot 100 record for longest reign at No.1. (Elvis Presley's double-sided "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog", then recognized as the longest-running No.1 of the Rock Era, spent 11 weeks atop the Billboard Best Sellers chart in 1956, before the debut of the Hot 100.) The record was matched in 1982 by Olivia Newton-John's Physical, but never surpassed until a 1991 change in chart methodology allowed songs to achieve longer reigns at No.1 ("End of the Road" by Boyz II Men set the new record, 13 weeks). The single, which was certified platinum by the RIAA, also hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and even reached #4 on the Country chart. Although written by Brooks as a love song, the devout Boone interpreted the song as inspirational and proclaimed that it was instead God who "lit up her life."

I believe when I fall in love
"I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)" is a soul song written by Stevie Wonder and Yvonne Wright, for his 1972 album, Talking Book.
The song starts as a simple piano intro, then a verse in minor scales before the harmonized vocal chorus where the writer explains that he believes that his latest love will last forever. The end of the song is a groovier part with muted distorted Clavinet. The song was covered by Peter Frampton in 1973 on his Frampton's Camel album, and again by Mike + the Mechanics on their 1995 release Beggar on a Beach of Gold and by both Petra Haden and Bill Frisell on their 2003 collaboration album Petra Haden & Bill Frisell. It was also covered by Art Garfunkel on his 1975 album (Breakaway) and by Michael McDonald on his 2003 album( Motown).
