Cultivating Faithfulness with Peter Englert - OBT 006
Ever thought about the role of faithfulness in your life's journey or how life's disruptions could actually lead to personal growth? These are the questions we tackle headfirst on my latest episode, asking the big questions and seeking answers through compelling conversations. We sit down with Peter Englert, a pastor and podcast host who shares his journey from his upbringing in Endicott, New York, to his current role as a family man and Pastor at Browncroft Church in Rochester, New York. He sheds light on his podcast, 'Why God, Why?', where he explores the most profound questions many of us grapple with.
Peter talks extensively about his experience with this concept of faithfulness - or what many would deem consistency. His conversation centers on trust issues and how to build faithfulness in relationships, both at home and in the workplace. We explore key strategies for navigating digital communication, emphasizing the importance of timely responses and acknowledgment to build trust and credibility.
Finally, we delve into the importance of setting boundaries, confronting issues, and fostering healthy relationships. Navigating relationship challenges, understanding others' perspectives, and recognizing 'values violations' are central to our discussions. We explore effective communication strategies for resolving conflict and managing expectations. We wrap up by discussing the importance of feedback and support, highlighting the value of honesty and transparency in all interactions. Listen in as we journey together through faithfulness, setbacks, and personal growth.

The Hidden Complexities and Pitfalls of Inherited Wealth
What if the inheritance you’ve been planning for your children doesn’t end up becoming the blessing you intended it to be, but rather a pitfall? As we dive into the murky waters of inherited wealth, taken from our Ditch the Suits Podcast, we unravel the complexities that often go unspoken and how they could potentially affect both the givers and the receivers. We talk about the intentions of parents who want to leave something for their kids and the reality of those children suddenly coming into large sums of money. These eye-opening statistics from the National Endowment for Financial Education underline the urgent need for financial education. We also delve into how factors like the recipient's maturity, financial understanding, and upbringing influence the use of their inheritance, with the aim of encouraging responsible financial decisions. So buckle up, and prepare for a candid and enlightening conversation on the hidden dynamics of inheritance.

Recap and Reflections: Highlights from the OBT's first five guests
🎉 It's my 37th birthday, and there's no better way to celebrate than to reflect on the nuggets of wisdom and the compelling stories shared by our guests so far!
My wife, Stephanie, and I kicked things off by sharing our journey through the laughters, tears, and breakthroughs that have defined our marriage and parenting. We gave you a front-row seat to our world, and I hope that our candid conversations on clear communication, honoring our spouses, and raising children have provided some valuable insights for you.
Rachel Jenks took us on a fascinating journey from being a ballerina to a marketer and then to an advocate for children affected by trafficking. We've learned that our identities are not defined by our professions, and Rachel's story is a true testament to that belief. We also got some practical tips on managing our emotions, unplugging to recharge, and journaling. The need to unplug and recharge has never been more critical than it is today, and I hope that Rachel's advice has helped you find peace in the midst of chaos.
Bret Magpiong, Amazon Bestseller, life coach and consultant, walked us through a framework for coming fully alive and living on purpose. He shared about the three P's - passions, principles and priorities and how when we multiple these three by E or effort - we can throw gasoline on life! But, without identifying and acknowledging our failures, we are missing a major compontent to finding our purpose. These ingredients, when mixed together, give us all a simple to follow framework for truly living on purpose, with purpose.
We were also enlightened by the inspiring story of resilience from our first international guest, Bradley Rose. The Peloton instructor shared his riveting journey of surviving a stroke in his 30s and turning setbacks into setups. Bradley's resilience and positive attitude towards adversity are truly inspiring, and I'm sure his story has resonated with many of you.
James Stagnitta, 2x Premier Lacrosse League Championship winning coach, broke down a champions journey and provided invaluable insights into leadership and how we can all be better in connecting with those under your care. His framework of asking questions, staying humble and developing empathy are an easy-to-follow framework any of us can follow to win with people. But he affirms over and over that our lives can be judged on wins and loses - but has to be based on how we lead by example and quality of our followers.
As we look back at these episodes, I express my profound gratitude to all our listeners for joining us on this journey. And as a birthday treat, I'm inviting everyone to check out my other podcast, Ditch the Suits, which has been recognized as one of the best podcasts of the year by Quill Inc. #birthday

We're switching gears on this episode of Ditch the Suits, using our knowledge from trading sports memorabilia to understand the intricacies of investing. We're going to reveal how understanding the value of baseball cards, whether they’re pristine or a bit crumpled, can translate into making informed decisions in the world of stocks and bonds.
Ever wondered how our emotions and loyalties can impact our investment decisions? We've all held on to that favorite player's card longer than we should have, right? Well, we're drawing parallels to how that same mindset can hinder our financial growth. Hang in there as we delve into the world of trading and investing, explaining how you can still strike a good deal in any market condition, hot or cold, with the right information.

We’re about to deconstruct this dated rule from the 90s and replace it with a more flexible, adjustable approach to financial planning. With the world's constant evolution and unpredictable future, we put the spotlight on adaptability and understanding. We promise, by the end of this episode, you'll be rethinking your financial strategy.
Retirement planning is not a one-size-fits-all, and we’re here to disclose why. We examine various aspects of planning for your golden years, including the intriguing concept of "Band-Aid years," and why a one-dimensional approach, like the 4% rule, may lead to flawed planning. We advocate for a holistic approach that strategically leverages your assets across different time phases. The goal? To adequately prepare you for the twists and turns that life can throw at you.
Finally, we delve into the crucial decision of picking a financial advisor. Sound financial planning is no walk in the park; it demands effort, insight, and, most importantly, a knowledgeable professional by your side. We underscore the importance of your advisor's acumen and the power to choose the right one. After all, financial planning doesn’t just hinge on following generic rules; it's about insightful, flexible decisions that are in tandem with the world's dynamism. So, come aboard as we navigate through retirement planning and financial decision-making - you will not want to miss this.

Questioning the 4% Rule: Tailoring Your Retirement Plan to Your Financial Needs
Do you ever question the financial advice that's out there? If you've heard about the 4% rule – that you should only draw 4% from your retirement funds each year - and blindly followed it, this segment from our Ditch the Suits Podcast is for you.
We strip down this widely acknowledged financial concept, highlighting the fact that it isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Can you believe the original creator of the 4% rule suggested that one could withdraw up to 10% depending on various circumstances? Yes, that's right!
We dig into the assumptions behind this rule, illustrating why your portfolio might not be able to support the 4% withdrawal. Are you aware of the importance of diversification and how a poorly diversified portfolio can increase your sequence of return risk? We guide you through this and more, focusing on the significance of comprehending investment and financial planning, not just adhering to a set rule. Remember, your investment plan and portfolio structure must harmonize with your specific financial requirements and situation.
Don't miss out on this insightful episode as we encourage you to challenge the consensus and make financial decisions that are right for you.

A Deep Dive into the 4% Rule and Beyond - DTS EP.58
Are you playing it too safe with your retirement planning? Brace yourself for a provocative re-evaluation of the 4% rule, the long-standing retirement drawdown strategy first created by William Benjen in the 1990s. Together, we'll trace the journey of this rule, from its inception to its current relevance, and debate its effectiveness in today's volatile financial environment.
We start by honouring the roots of the 4% rule, acknowledging its significant role in shaping our understanding of retirement planning. Despite its long-term acceptance, we'll dissect this rule, scrutinizing its underlying assumptions around portfolio design, inflation, and investor timelines. We also discuss the complexities and limitations of this rule, which play a pivotal role in its success, influenced by human behaviour, market variables, and financial planning. In this era of uncertainty, we'll also examine the impact of current market conditions on the endurance of the 4% rule.
We're not stopping there, though. Prepare for a daring comparison between the 4% rule and the 5% rule, as we explore the shifts in retirement spending post the 2008 financial crisis. As we highlight how financial advisors have leveraged these rules to drive their sales, we'll also ponder over alternative perspectives and risks associated with these rules. This episode is not just about understanding the mechanics of retirement spending rules but also about challenging the conventional wisdom associated with them. Be ready for some hard-hitting truths, intriguing insights, and thought-provoking discussions on this retirement financial rollercoaster ride.
