Starting to feel like spring around the farm! The new grain bin has gone up and was able to get an acre of sugar snap peas in the ground.

It's been over five months since I posted a farm video and it's about time to start farm vlogging again! In this video I will give a brief update on the greenhouses, a quick tour of some of our equipment used on the vegetable operation and a look at our new grain bin going up.

Harvest 19 is complete! Glad we finished up in October and before all the rain moved in. Other than very poor yields it was a very non eventful harvest season....no disasters or accidents!

The weather has been perfect during harvest 19 and we finally finished up beans and now hitting the corn hard trying to finish by the end of Oct. In the mornings we are still harvesting tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower and working on year end field clean up at the produce farm.

After flooding during May and June and drought conditions during July-September, we are seeing very poor yields during week one of harvest 19. We currently use a 2012 JD S660 with a 630F header for beans and a six row head for corn. Our grain trucks are 1998 and 2005 Internationals. We grow approximately 800 acres of soybeans and 350 acres of field corn.

In this video you will see how we harvest green beans on our farm with a one row picker and get them prepared for Farmers’ Markets. It sure beats hand picking them!

Saturday mornings on the farm are the most important day of the week for us. In this video I will explain the process of preparing for our numerous farmers' markets we attend in the Greater Columbus area and beyond.

DOUBLE DISASTER!! This is what happens when a track loader hits an overpass! Also, an extreme rescue from being stuck in the mud! Unbelievable! What could have turned out to be two horrific catastrophes, ended up only damaging one track loader, and fortunately no one was injured.

We finally got our pumpkins planted and most of our early vegetables. We plant pumpkins on cereal rye so they will mature on bed of clean straw mulch and our warm season vegetables are mostly planted on raised beds covered with plastic mulch.

With dry weather comes long days on the farm trying to catch up on lost time. In this week’s episode we do a little disking, pack some tomatoes, go to several Farmer’s Markets, and then lay some plastic mulch for our warm season vegetable crops….just another busy week on a produce farm!

Just when things finally dried up enough to hit the fields hard a hydrolic cylinder for the marker arm on our Kinze 3600 broke and stopped us for several hours.

After having nonstop rain this spring we decided to rent a JD 750 Drill and take advantage of some dry weather to start getting some beans in while trying to get the corn finished up at the same time with the Kinze 3600. We use a vacuum system and over five miles of tubing with nearly 1,000 taps to collect the sap. The end of December means that the 2019 vegetable season has officially began for us! We seeded our first of 7 tomato plantings on December 29th. We will be posting weekly videos of our entire farming season for 2019. Here is a list of some of the farming you will be able to see happen this year: seeding, transplanting and harvesting of over 15 different vegetable crops, tillage, laying plastic on raised beds, irrigation, washing and packing produce, loading box trucks and trailers for Farmers' Markets, greenhouse work, soybean and field corn planting and harvesting, working with dozens of employees and just having some good old fun on the farm!
