Colorado DOT trigger series of avalanches in safety measure | USA TODAY
Department of Transportation workers in Colorado triggered a series of avalanches as part of their efforts to open the road for the season.
By setting off avalanches while the road remained closed for the winter, workers hoped to prevent unexpected slides later that could trap drivers once the road opens around Memorial Day.
Crews like this one are working across the West to open high-elevation roads and mountain passes following an extraordinarily snowy year. While most East Coast residents had a warm winter, Colorado, California, Utah and other western states saw heavy snowfall that tallied in some places more than 70 feet over the course of the season.

FDA panel recommends birth control pill to be sold over the counter | USA TODAY
An FDA advisory panel recommended the agency allow a birth control pill to be available over the counter in the U.S. for the first time.
An FDA advisory panel on Wednesday unanimously recommended the agency allow a birth control pill to be available over the counter in the U.S. for the first time.
The panel came to the decision after a two-day public meeting mostly centered on if people could safely and effectively take the birth control drug Opill without professional supervision. Experts on the panel said they were confident they could, and the benefits of making the pill more widely available far outweigh any risks.
The advisers' decision is not binding, but the 17-0 vote paves the way for the likely approval of the pill's over-the-counter availability. The FDA is expected to make a final decision this summer.

Donald Trump found liable in civil sexual abuse case. Here's what it means. | JUST THE FAQS
A jury found Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse in the E. Jean Carroll civil suit. Here's what the verdict could mean for Trump's political future.
A federal jury found Donald Trump liable Tuesday in a civil case for sexual abuse and defamation of E. Jean Carroll in 1996 and said he should pay her $5 million in total damages, a verdict that could further complicate the former president's election bid in 2024.
The jury, which deliberated fewer than three hours, opted not to find Trump liable for rape but rather sexual abuse that injured Carroll.
Trump told Fox News Digital he will appeal the verdict, and said on his Truth Social website that he still has "no idea" who Carroll is. "This verdict is a disgrace," the former president said in an all-caps post.
Carroll, a professional writer, had sued Trump for defamation, saying he lied about a 1996 sexual assault in a New York City department store and disparaged her character in doing so.

House GOP reveals new details in alleged Biden family dealings | USA TODAY
Rep. James Comer released new details on the investigation into allegations the Biden family received millions of dollars from foreign entities.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., head of the Oversight and Accountability Committee, distributed banking records documenting multiple payments while Biden was vice president. Revelations about the payments and business deals have been reported for years, but Comer and other members of the panel questioned why Biden’s relatives such as Hunter Biden arranged for payments through shell companies if they had nothing to hide.
A White House spokesperson, Ian Sams, said in a Wednesday statement that Comer has been the one helping the Chinese Communist Party by attacking Biden. Sams said Comer used “baseless claims, personal attacks and innuendo to try to score political points” in his “evidence-free, politically motivated ‘investigation.’”

50 Cent (real name Curtis Jackson) helped define an era of hip-hop with his 2003 album that included hits "In Da Club," "21 Questions," and "Many Men (Wish Death)." Several of the songs referenced the moment he was shot nine times in 2000 as well as various happenings from street life in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York.
If you saw the rapper perform the album in the past, don't expect the same from this tour. "It’s gonna be a whole new show," he promises.
"Sometimes out of habit, you go to certain records," 50 Cent says. "People love other things on it, so I wanna make sure I touch those records before I don’t do those anymore."

Description Trump found liable in Carroll case, both parties react to verdict | USA TODAY
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan was appointed by President Bill Clinton. Other claims by former President Donald Trump have not been substantiated.
Carroll, a professional writer, had sued Trump for defamation, saying he lied about a 1996 sexual assault in a New York City department store and disparaged her character in doing so.
The sexual abuse verdict comes as Trump remains the frontrunner for the Republican presidential campaign in 2024.
This is not the first legal setback for Trump, who is under criminal indictment in New York City over a hush money case; the former president remains under criminal investigation in at least three other cases, two of them involving efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss.
