So, Moscow’s troops have destroyed the first US-made M1 Abrams main battle tank supplied to Kiev’s forces amid the Ukraine conflict, multiple Russian Telegram channels reported. Footage circulating online purports to show the vehicle with a large column of fire rising from its turret. It was reportedly targeted by a FPV suicide drone and sustained at least one hit from a shoulder-mounted anti-tank grenade launcher. The tank was reportedly hit near the village of Berdychi, located to the northwest of Avdeevka, a key Donbass town recently liberated by Russian forces. A close-up of the destroyed Abrams taken by a surveillance drone shows the vehicle’s ammunition compartment burned-out, with the engine compartment on fire. Washington pledged to supply Ukraine with 31 M1 Abrams tanks in January 2022, ahead of Kiev’s long-hyped yet ultimately botched counteroffensive. However, they were fully delivered only by mid-October and have seemingly been kept away from the frontline, being featured only in propaganda videos. The Ukrainian Abrams have seen actual combat only over the past few days, ending up deployed to the battlefield to bolster Kiev’s effort to stop the westward advance of Russian troops following the fall of Avdeevka, formerly a major Ukrainian stronghold in Donbass and one of the key staging points for indiscriminate artillery and rocket attacks on the city of Donetsk. The ultimate version of the Mirage 2000C in French service had a single seat, an RDI pulse-doppler radar, the M53-P2 engine, a night-vision-compatible cockpit and provision for MICA radar-guided air-to-air missiles as well as laser-guided bombs. The last few Mirage 2000Cs, out of around 120 Dassault built for the French air force, finally retired in 2022. It’s these old but well-maintained airframes an unnamed French official apparently was referring to when, last year, he told France 24 that one option for Paris was to donate to Kyiv 13 Mirage 2000Cs that still had “a bit of potential.” Those jets could reinforce the Ukrainian air force’s fleet of 40 or s0 1980s-vintage Sukhoi Su-27s that, for two years now, have patrolled Ukrainian air space and occasionally flown low-level bombing sorties. The 200-mile-range SCALPs are some of Ukraine’s best deep-strike munitions. Two-seat Mirage 2000Ds could bolster the two- or three-dozen Su-24s, however. One of the main differences between the Mirage 2000C and the newer Mirage 2000D, beside the additional seat in the latter, is that the Ds are compatible with SCALPs as well as with most of France’s other precision air-to-ground munitions. The French air force is upgrading, for another few years of service, 48 of the 86 Mirage 2000Ds that Dassault built, adding new munitions including MICA missiles. The rest of the D-models are retiring. "The successes we have today, this extended arm, the ability to reach the enemy where they absolutely don't expect it, speak to the fact that the adversary will have fewer capabilities in this direction after losing the A-50," he said. The spokesperson noted that the destroyed aircraft had been modernized. As explained by Ihnat, the A-50 is essentially a radar that can observe and scan, detecting all aerial targets within a radius of 600 km and identifying electronic warfare systems. "We need to look at the intelligence data. The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kyrylo Budanov, said there were eight aircraft before this. Not all of them were operational, and not all of them were modernized. So, there were only a few of them left," Ihnat added. On February 23 Defense Forces of Ukraine reported that a Russian A-50 aircraft was shot down over the Sea of Azov. This is the second A-50 that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have destroyed since the beginning of the war. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, the A-50U is a new modernized version of the aircraft. The cost of the destroyed aircraft is $350 million.
