Off Grid Solar Power & Off Grid Solar Oven
We are using pure solar power during the day when the sun is shining. We cook now with a GoSun solar oven most of the time as well to save on propane. Read the full article here: http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/articles/article.php?id=11454
I have 1,000 watts of solar power going into our off grid electronics and wood shops. This powers all my rechargeable tools and equipment as well as any power tools when needed.
By the house I have 600 watts of solar panels so far connected to a small inverter. I use this power through an extension cord to power anything we need during the day. We have cut our electric bill to about 18 cents per day now. We hope to get the water pump off the grid too but with the electrical code and the 240 volt pump this will take some time.
We have been cooking our meals recently with a GoSun solar oven which we are reviewing. I just wanted to share with you for now yet another aspect of off grid living.
The solar cooker is providing us with hot cooked meals for free any time the sun is shining. It cooks even with some clouds.
The GoSun solar oven holds enough food for two people with no problem. Our recent meal today was salmon with rice and vegetables. I am surprised that even the rice turned out perfect.

Garden Work & Putting Rustic Siding On Chicken Coop
We worked in the garden in the morning. Later I put siding on the chicken coop. Chick updates. A package arrived.
In the morning Melanie and I put mulch on our garden row. This was the last row that we planted in the first garden plot. Now that the seeds have been planted we put mulch over the top to retain moisture.
I still have enough mulch for around the first row but we want to let the plants grow a bit first. The tomatoes and peppers that froze are still showing some signs of life but not doing anything.
Later Melanie put mulch around her herb bed. It is really looking good now.
I put rustic pine board siding on the chicken coop but sadly most of the camera footage was lost.
I started out overlapping the boards a bit but it did not look good. With the OSB, then tar paper and then siding it should last many years anyway I think. And when I put rain gutters on the roof the walls should never see direct rain or splatter.
The little chicks are doing well. I have them in the chicken coop in a plastic tub with a set of tiki lamps for warmth. Although to me it feels hot the little chickens are snuggling up to the light for warmth.
Later I set up an area in the chicken coop for them. I will have to show you next time.
I got the siding done on one wall of the chicken coop and half of the next before the day was done. Most of the video footage was lost due to corruption for some reason.
A package arrived from Wolfwise camping supplies on Amazon. This is a folding shower tent which packs into a small pizza shaped case.
We will be using this a lot here I think when we find our solar camp shower. We hope to save even more on our energy bill by using solar hot water when we can.

Built Nearly Free Pallet Wood Chicken Tractor
I built a new chicken tractor for only $8 using all pallet wood. The only cost was for the chicken wire. This is large enough for my smaller birds or for about 4 to 5 adults.
I have been picking up pallets and crates when I see them for use in projects.
I made this chicken tractor out of 1x3 and 2x2 lumber from pallets. Every single piece of wood was from pallets or salvaged in some way.
I used my air powered stapler to quickly and efficiently put it all together. Screws and nails tend to split smaller wood like this but the staples do a good job.
I put supports in the middle and put a board across for a chicken roost. Then I stapled chicken wire all around to keep the birds in.
This is a day pen only so it is not really meant to protect the birds from predators. Rather it is meant to keep the birds in.
Half of the top flips back and lets us walk inside to gather up the chickens with ease.
When I put the birds inside they were quite happy. They were hopping on and off of the perch and playing.
Now our little birds have even more grass and bugs to eat in one place. We can easily slide this over as they eat grass in one area to give them fresh food throughout the day.
This will offset our feed costs and make the broilers healthier for us.

Single Coil Bedini Motor With Multiple Output Diodes & Batteries
I got some 150 ma meters in so I could see if the output of my Bedini motor is divided among batteries as some suggest. Read the full article: http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/articles/article.php?id=11451
I am charging up to 7 batteries at one time using a single boil Bedini SSG (Simplified School Girl) motor and a single transistor. I am adding diodes to add an output battery or pair.
There is no increase in current on the input side of the motor no matter how many batteries I add to the system.
Some suggested that the output will be divided among the batteries being charged as I add more.
When I added a diode to the output transistor and added two more batteries to be charged the input current did not go up and the output current on the primary charging battery bank did not change.

Had An Ultrasound Today & Got More Chickens
Today Melanie went in for her ultrasound and we found if we are having a boy or a girl. We also got more chickens while in town.
I had no idea how long an ultrasound took nor how many images they take while testing. It was very interesting. We decided to see if it was a boy or a girl because so many people are asking us. This makes it easier for family and friends to buy gifts.
So we found out that we are having a baby girl.
It is interesting how seeing the ultrasound made it more real for us. We knew of course that we were having a baby but seeing it really makes things seem more real. Its hard to explain.
Melanie and I are very happy. Our baby will be named Michelle Reid. We are still thinking of the middle name.
While in town we also picked up some more chickens. We are planning to provide our own food this year, which includes meat.
We bought all the broilers they had - 12 of them. And three more chicks that were in stock. We also ordered 15 more chickens for next week. These will be a walking food lager for later in the year.
I do not like to kill animals but we do eat meat and it is cleaner to raise your own than to buy them from the store.
We are also taking orders for chickens from our friends and neighbors.
We are going to be building chicken tractors to allow the birds to eat bugs and grass by day to offset the cost of feed and also make the birds healthier.
It was very hot and humid so we actually did not get anything else done with the day after we got home and settled in.

Baby Items Arrive & Setting Up Baby Room
Many have been asking us when we will set up our baby room. Well, now the time has come. My parents were at a garage sale and got us a lot of baby items.
We now have a baby bed which turns into a toddler bed later on so it will be useful for many years to come. I immediately set this up in our baby room.
We also got a car seat and stroller. Plus our first baby toys. There is a seat the baby can crawl around in too. And a gate to put across doorways.
We now have a lot of things in our baby room. Melanie got to work putting away the baby clothes that we already have from garage sales. We have been shopping for good deals in the area and my parents have found us some nice deals.

Homestead Gardening & Clearing Trees For Second Garden Plot
Our garden is the top priority right now and we are investing all of our energy into that. I am spreading mulch around the plants to retain moisture and stop weeks. I just dropped two trees to clear space for our second garden plot.
Now that most of our first garden is planted I am spreading mulch around the plants. This will retain moisture and prevent weed growth. I hope to continue to build up mulch and compost through the coming season to prevent weeds.
By next year our garden will be looking pretty good I think. I already thing that this year we will have the best garden ever.
Melanie found some garden edging which she put around her herb bad all on her own. She did a nice job.
I was out cutting the two trees to make space for our new garden plot. We do not want the garden to enter the yard area too much so I am planning a second garden plot along the wood line at the edge of the yard. There we will plan corn, peas and beans.
I got one tree dropped, cut up and hauled away but hesitated on the second tree because it was leaning badly toward the solar panels.
I called a friend who came over to help me with my come along and his rope. The tree dropped right where I wanted it.
I ran the chain saw until it ran out of gas before calling it a night.
Someone sent me a tripod with a GoPro attachment in the box. This is so perfect because now both Melanie and I have our own cameras and tripods.
I am really loving the ThruNite battery charger. It charges any combination of batteries from different sizes, voltages and types. It is fully automatic. I love this thing. I am finally able to top off all those odd batteries.

Garden Work & Started Rebuild Of Seized Wood Chipper Engine
We are still working in the garden in hopes of providing all of our food needs for a year. I am trying to rebuild a seized up engine on a wood chipper that I have.
I am hauling loads of mulch and compost every day this week. There is a lot of compost there and it all needs to be moved. We can certainly use it here so I am bringing it home.
I have started work on a seized up old wood shipper/shredder that I brought back from NY. I figure the piston is seized due to being left outside too long.
I brought it over to the garage and removed the shroud first. The pull starter cord was hanging out and jammed up.
After some lube and work I got the pull starter working again smoothly.
Next I removed the cylinder head to find a surprise inside. The cylinder was full of water nearly to the top. There is a huge amount of water and rust particles in the cylinder. The valves are rusty too and the intake valve is seized in place.
I cleaned out the cylinder and sprayed some PB blaster into it. I let it soak for a few minutes. Then I took a block of wood and a hammer and pounded on the piston to free it up.
I got lucky that the piston was not all the way down in the cylinder. There was enough space left for me to get it moving downward.
Then I worked the flywheel gently, freeing up the piston a little bit at a time until I got it to move all the way up the cylinder.
After cleaning out the cylinder and then spraying it with oil again I worked the piston up and down until it moved freely.
Next I worked on the valves in the same manner.
Soon I had the engine moving smoothly.
I am also experimenting with solar power for the chalet. I hope to figure out how to set up a grid tie inverter to power our home entirely.
For now I am experimenting with placement of the solar panels in the sun for maximum daily exposure.
I removed the carburetor and will clean that later.

Homestead Work On A Hot Sunny Day
Its been over 80 degrees for a few days now but we are doing our best to get the garden finished. My new camera froze up on me yesterday so I did not get much video in.
I have been hauling two loads of composted leaves and a load of mulch each day this week. There are about 8 to 10 more loads of compost for me to pick up.
I am down to one more load of mulch.
We are putting the mulch around the mung beans that Melanie planted the other day. And we are mulching the garden walkways to prevent weed growth.
The mulch around the plants will help retain moisture.
Later my new camera froze on me and I did not get it going until this very morning so I did an update and got this video live for you.
The camera is fine now. I have to learn how to use it I guess.

Heavy Gardening & Running Electric Fence
I hauled two more truckloads of compost and another truckload of mulch today. After spreading that on the garden I ran the electric fence around the garden and chickens to protect them from predators.
I think there is another ten loads of compost for me to pick up in the following days. We are hauling two loads of compost per day because my neighbor wants it gone.
For now I am putting the compost in a pile by the garden. This will be used as potting soil and in the next garden plot which we will soon prepare.
I am also hauling about four truck loads of mulch this week. I am getting one load per day and spreading it out on the garden pathways to prevent weeds and retain moisture.
I tilled the last half of the garden and then Melanie and planted mung beans in an entire row. We hope to provide all the food we need for a year so we are planting heavily now.
I want to put in a second garden plot for peas, beans and corn this week as well.
At the end of the day I put up electric fence around the garden and the chicken coop to prevent anything from getting in.
The chickens need protection from predators so I ran two strands of wire down low around the chicken coop.
I finished putting the electric fence around the garden as well. This protects it on all sides from deer. The deer are the worst out here followed by chipmunks.
I have to spread cayenne pepper to stop the chipmunks though. They will dig up and eat the seeds and seedlings in a short time.
I swapped out the electric fence controller for the stronger and newer one. This will better protect the chickens from harm.
Some packages arrived in the mail today.
I got a HUGE package of GoPro accessories in a carrying case. Plus there was a 64 Gb memory card in the box. This is from someone who wants to remain unknown. Thank you!!!
ThruNite sent me a new flashlight. This package contains an awesome automatic battery charger with auto sense and digital display. Plus their most compact and brightest flashlight with an unbelievable 10,000 lumens intensity. I cant wait to try these out.
You can find ThruNite products here: http://www.thrunite.com/
At this moment they have a 10% off code on their site for this flashlight.
I also received some Germanium diodes that I ordered. These are used in a crystal radio. The crystal radio requires no power but it works. I figure I should be able to get some usable energy from the air using Germanium diodes as a receiver. Lets see.

Hauling Compost & Mulch For Our Homestead Garden
I started out the day hauling compost and mulch for our homestead garden. The compost amends the soil and adds nutrients while the mulch covers the walkways and prevents weeds from growing there.
We are beginning a no till garden this year. We had to till at first in order to have a garden at all. But once the garden is established we will no longer have to till.
We are using a combined square foot garden and back to eden garden method.
I use a modified square foot garden. The idea is that you can reach into the center from all sides of a 4 foot square garden. With the square foot garden you have more space for planting and less loss to pathways in between.
I have modified the idea and use 4 foot wide rows with 2 foot wide walkways in between. There are no paths through the rows. This reduces garden space loss even more. And we can still reach into the middle from either side.
I am also hoping to use the back to eden method which is a no till garden. With this method you build up compost and mulch through the years and never till the soil again.
Each year you just add more compost and and mulch on top of the grow beds. This builds up nutrients and retains moisture. The garden produces better than with a standard tilled or plowed garden.
These methods also provide you with a fertile organic garden. If you are only adding natural compost and mulch then you are basically following nature's way and building up an organic garden.
This method also costs nothing if you can source the mulch and compost or produce it yourself.
A couple packages arrived in the mail today. My meters for the Bedini motor showed up early. I am still waiting for the wire to arrive and then I can show you how to build one yourself.
Also a surprise package came containing a Hero 4 GoPro camera. This was fully unexpected and a very nice surprise. I think that if this camera works well for me I will use this as my daily camera and give Melanie my old one. The wind blowing on my other camera is horrible and many people complain about it.
The GoPro claims to have overcome the wind problem. I will try it out and see how it works.
Thank you very much for sending this to me.

Hot Day Sorting Out Electronics Lab & Off Grid Battery Shed
It was a hot day at the homestead Saturday so I spent most of my time sorting and cleaning my electronics lab and battery shed.
This is my off grid battery storage shed and control electronics. The electronics lab and wood shop are fully off the grid and powered by the batteries kept here.
I am still setting up shop since our move from New York.
It was in the mid 80s by the afternoon hours so I stayed in the shed for most of the day.
We also had a BBQ and a bonfire out front in the evening with a neighbor but I did not mention that on video. We cooked hot dogs over an open fire. It was fun.

Single Coil Bedini SSG Charging Multiple Batteries At One Time
I am charging extra batteries with no extra input current used on my Bedini SSG single coil motor. Read full article: http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/articles/article.php?id=11447
It looks like I can charge many batteries with my old Bedini motor without using any more input current.
When I first build my old Bedini motor I was connecting many batteries to the collector of the transistor. Each battery had its own diode coming off the collector of the transistor. Other than that the circuit remained the same as the original.
At that time I never gave it any thought that I was charging 5 batteries at a time with 5 diodes on a single coil Bedini motor and a single transistor.
I did not have meters or gauges at that time so I never ran tests on it either.
Now I want to see what is going on when I add more batteries to the single coil output.
I have a volt and amp meter connected to the run battery to show how much power is being used to run the motor.
There are two 216 Ah golf cart batteries connected to the main output.
I then connected another pair of 12 volt 7 Ah batteries to another diode coming off the collector of the transistor. The batteries started to charge and the input current did not change.
This is very interesting and exciting to see. I want to connect more batteries later and see what happens so stay tuned.

Planting Garden Again & Semi Free Ranging Chicks
We are attempting to plant our garden a third time this year. Our chickens are semi free ranging by day for healthy, happy lives.
We lost all our plants twice already to nature. Our first 300 seedlings were killed by a chipmunk which dug them all out and ate the seeds off the roots. We had started our plants indoors and put them out one day to get some sunlight. After an hour they were all gone.
So we bought some plants and wanted until after Memorial day based on what people around here told us. We put in a mess of tomatoes and peppers. It froze that night killing everything. The weather did not give us any indication of this happening so we could not have prepared for it.
So we bought three flats of plants again and put them in the garden. Now we have an entire row of tomatoes and a row of peppers. We hope to make our own salsa, chili sauce, and tomato products to keep us going all year.
We are also going to plant a lot of peas and beans from seed but we have to stop the small critters from ruining our garden first.
I am putting the chicks outside during the day for fresh air, sunlight and foraging. This has many benefits for the birds and for us.
The birds get a healthy life while they eat insects and plants in the yard. Each day I move the cage a little bit so they get a fresh plot to eat. This saves us on food costs as well.
We give them their chick starter food 24/7 so they can have all they want. But they also get wild edibles at the same time.
This gives the birds a good quality of life and also makes them clean for us.
We have 6 meat birds and the rest are going to be egg layers. For both types of birds we want them to be clean and healthy.
I leave the birds out in the yard all day in dog kennels placed door to door. This gives them plenty of room to spread out and forage.
In the evening I usher them into the smaller kennel and move that to the chicken too where I usher them out for the night.
Inside the huge walk in chicken coop they have a corner area with Tiki lights to keep them warm at night.
The Tiki lights are great because of one bulb goes out, there are more as backup. In this way I am sure that the birds will always have heat through the night.

Setting Up Chicken Mansion 2017
I am building a large walk in chicken coop with nesting boxes, a brooder, storage cabinets and more. It is going to look like a small cottage. I hope to have the chickens in there this night.
So far the chicken mansion is coming along very well. I have finished the sheathing the other day and now I am working on the interior and the door.
I put boards up in the rafters to block the wind from blowing in there. This makes a huge difference on the inside temperature.
I also built a door for us to enter. It moves smoothly on its hinges now and has a latch high up where critters cannot reach it. A raccoon would be smart enough to open the latch and enter the chicken coop if it was in reach.
I then build a storage space for the chicken feed. I have two large metal trash cans which I use to keep critters out of the feed. I put them on boards to keep them off the ground and then built a shelf over them.
The shelf will be hinged so I can lift it up to access the chicken food inside. Then I can drop the lid and put pine shavings on top.j
The shelf will keep the chickens off the trash cans, keeping them clean.
Above the chicken food storage I plan to build a storage cabinet with closing doors to keep extra feeders and medicine.
On the other end of the chicken coop I will have nesting boxes for the hens and above that a chick brooder for the little ones.
The brooder will be insulated and heated by a solar powered halogen lamp. This will have a thermostat control to turn it on and off as needed to save energy.
There will be solar powered LED lighting inside the chicken coop on a timer for winter time. This will extend the light hours in the chicken coop for nesting hens. In this way we should get more eggs in winter.
Outside the chicken mansion I will have a porch over the front door with hanging potted plants. I will have window boxes full of flowers as well on each side.
The siding will be pine boards which I got from the local sawmill recently.

Homestead Garden Planting And Some Packages Arrived
It has been raining for days now but we finally managed to put in our garden plants between rain storms.
I wanted to plant a week ago but it has been raining for about ten days now pretty much non stop.
Finally we got a break between rain storms and I prepared the garden for planting by measuring out the planting rows.
We are going with a modified square foot garden method again this year. This means that our rows will be 4 feet wide and run the entire length of the garden. Our walkways will be 2 feet in between the rows. This will allow us to walk around the garden and reach into the planting rows from either side.
By eliminating the walkways in between square foot garden beds we gain quite a few feet of planting space and we are still able to reach into the rows with ease to harvest the food.
When I had the stakes in the ground we ended up with five 4 foot wide planting rows with walkways all around.
I then ran string between the stakes to mark them off so we can walk a straight line when planting.
Melanie and I then went out and planted our crops. We put in potatoes, tomatoes and peppers for now. We also put in asparagus plants that we had on hand.
It sure looks good to have plants in the garden.
A fellow YouTuber, shartne, sent me a volt meter to use in my electronics lab. He also works with solar panels and solar power among other things. You can check out his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/shartne
I received a package from running snail on amazon. This contained a magnetic LED camp light and an emergency multi powered weather radio. You can find them here: http://amzn.to/2qEHOOF

Yard & Garden Day At The Homestead
It was raining on and off all day but I still worked in the yard in between rain storms. I had to mow the entire yard with a push mower but actually got it done on one tank of gas.
I wanted to get the garden planted today but due to the constant rain storms I never got to it.
In between storms I fired up the old Toro self propelled lawn mower that I repaired a year ago and mowed the entire lawn on a single tank of gas.
Watch the video where I restored this machine. It was seized up and not running when I got it. Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLsQaIcdJsE&index=6&list=PLlUzPxYD3NgpkMrplJL5DUReM1A1ycwgs
I cannot believe how long this machine runs on a tank of gas. I did not think I could get the entire lawn done before it ran out of gas. But I actually had enough to do some trim on the edges of the lawn where nature is encroaching on our yard.
The snapper garden tractor needs some repair work but I only paid $20 for it about a year ago. I cleaned the carburetor and got the machine running but the drive wheel is worn out and needs to be replaced. This is cheap though at only $15 online so I will buy a new one.
I also have to figure out how to repair the brakes because the brake mechanism is jammed up inside the drive wheel and not connected to anything.
Also the carb leaks out its fuel overnight so the needle must be worn out.
A cool thing about the old Snapper lawn mower is that you can stand it up on its back for service. It is actually designed to be stored like this. You can reach everything underneath the machine with ease. I love this.
I will repair this old mower and get it back into service for use on our huge yard.
Inside Melanie was baking bread and tortillas. She bakes ahead of time and then freezes the food for later use. She is really talented in the kitchen.
Later on it was still raining so I worked in the wood shop for a while. I am trying out a new rotary tool for review and wanted to work a bit with some scrap wood.
I cut off a piece of pallet wood and used the rotary tool with a router bit to form the edges. Then I burnt them with a lighter. I used my belt sander for rough sanding and then the hand sander for fine sanding.
Then I used the rotary tool to carve out a flower and Melanie's name in the wood. Next I used the wood burner to burn the deep cuts to bring them out in view.
All of this was done fully off the grid using solar power from my battery bank in the shed next to my wood shop.
I hope to start building things for sale in the off grid wood shop and increase our income some.

Last Day Of Memorial Weekend & Back To Work
My family all left for home and Melanie and I got right back to work on the homestead. I tilled the garden, getting ready to plant and I am working on a lawn mower for our yard.
After my family left for home I got right to work on the homestead.
I shoveled the pile of composted leaves into the rest of the garden plot and then tilled half the garden to prepare it for planting. We hope to start planting this week.
After that I got working on my garden tractor. This is the one I brought back with me from New York. It sputtered so I knew it would run and it has a complete mower deck.
I cleaned the carburetor and got the machine running but it wont drove. There is a friction wheel drive on the axle but the drive wheel is not touching the engine pulley. There may be a spring missing.
I hope I can get this running because our yard badly needs to be mowed now.
