Ukraine War: Where are Russia making gains?
Sky's Defence and Security Analyst, Professor Michael Clarke assess where Russian forces are making gains across Ukraine.
Data from the Institute for the Study of War, shared with Sky News, shows detail of where Russia has reinforced it's positions near Kherson ahead of a potential Ukrainian strike.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen Russia making gains in several regions in the country's east. Over the past few years, pro-Russian separatists have been fighting Ukrainian government forces in the Donbass region, which is made up of the two provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk. The fighting has resulted in a de facto partition of the region, with the separatists controlling a significant portion of the territory.
In recent months, there have been reports of a buildup of Russian military forces along the border with Ukraine, fueling concerns about a possible escalation of the conflict. Despite several ceasefires and peace agreements, the violence in the Donbass region has continued and has resulted in a large number of casualties and displacement of civilians.
While the exact extent of Russian involvement in the conflict remains a matter of debate, it is widely believed that the separatists are receiving support from Moscow, including military equipment and personnel. The ongoing conflict has had a significant impact on the local population, with many civilians caught in the crossfire and facing difficulties accessing basic necessities such as food, water, and healthcare.

Ukraine releases footage of Wagner soldiers appearing to beat up their commander
Ukraine has released extraordinary video footage that appears to show Russian fighters dragging their badly wounded commander away from the battlefield, and then beating him violently with what appear to be shovels.
A Ukrainian drone captured the incident near the eastern city of Bakhmut, where intense fighting has been raging for months. It was released on Ukrainian social media channels on Monday. Speaking in his nightly address, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said Ukrainian units were repelling repeated Russian attempts to encircle Bakhmut and break through its defences
The conflict began with the Ukrainian Revolution of 2014, which saw the ousting of the pro-Russian President Yanukovych and the rise of a new pro-Western government in Kiev. This sparked a military intervention by Russia, which annexed Crimea and supported separatist rebels in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Ukraine: Russian forces attack civilians near Kyiv, as Mauripol evacuation halted for second time
They were trying to escape the wreckage of what was once their homes when they came under direct attack.

To the south, renewed Russian shelling forced the Red Cross to abandon a second attempt to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol.
President Zelenskyy appealed to the West again to enforce a no-fly zone, something they have refused to do, but today US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said they have given the green light to Nato countries to provide fighter jets to Ukraine.

Ukrainian tank single handedly destroys massive Russian convoy east of Kyiv
INCREDIBLE drone footage shows the moment a massive Russian convoy was attacked by a single Ukrainian tank.
Footage captured by a Ukrainian military drone shows a Ukrainian tank carrying out an ambush on a Russian column as it moved through Nova Basan, east of Kyiv, which was recaptured by Ukrainian forces on April 1.
Much of the battle to retake the town took place on March 31 and involved members of the Dmytro Korchynsky Brotherhood Battalion, or the Bratstvo (Brotherhood) Battalion, which released this footage on Wednesday with Russian and Ukrainian flag images added over the vehicles. At least eight vehicles are marked Russian and just one is marked Ukrainian.
Following the attack, images of damaged and burned-out Russian vehicles littering the town were posted online by residents, photographers travelling with the Bratstvo Battalion, and by Ukrainian reporters who visited Nova Basan after the Russian withdrawal.
The Bratstvo Battalion was formed on February 24 by Dmytro Korchynsky, a fringe political figure and writer based in Kyiv. His Bratstvo political party has been described as an ultranationalist Orthodox Christian organization, according to a profile published by The Intercept in 2015. In a video announcing the formation of the battalion, Korchynsky said it was accepting recruits “to participate in the defense of Ukraine.”
Travelling with Bratstvo Battalion was Oleksiy Seredyuk, an activist running Korchynsky’s online media arm, World Bratstvo TV, and who was documenting the battalion’s activities.
On March 31, Seredyuk posted a video of troops being welcomed by residents of Nova Basan as they entered the town on foot. Walking alongside Seredyuk in that video, and several others he has posted on social media during the conflict, was Vita Zavirukha, an ultranationalist female soldier known in Ukraine for her high-profile involvement in neo-Nazi groups.
Zavirukha gained notoriety in 2016 she was tried for involvement in the killing of three police officers.
The conflict in Ukraine, also known as the War in Donbass, is a ongoing conflict in the easternmost region of Ukraine. It started in 2014, after a series of protests in the Ukrainian capital Kiev known as the Euromaidan Revolution, led to the ousting of the Ukrainian President and a shift towards closer ties with the West. This was met with resistance from pro-Russian separatists in the Donbass region, who declared independence and sparked a conflict with the Ukrainian government.
Since then, fighting between Ukrainian government forces and the pro-Russian separatists has claimed thousands of lives and displaced over a million people. Efforts to bring an end to the conflict, including several ceasefires and peace negotiations, have so far been unsuccessful in bringing a lasting solution. The conflict remains a complex and sensitive issue, with both sides blaming each other for the violence and the international community divided on how to resolve the crisis.

Ukraine Invasion: Sky News team under heavy fire as they were ambushed by Russian forces
The devastation and destruction rained down on Ukraine by the Russian forces has taken many civilian lives.
President Putin insists that only military targets are being attacked but many ordinary people, often trying to flee the violence, have been killed.
How that happens was made terrifyingly clear to one of our Sky News teams reporting from there this week.
Russian forces were nowhere to be seen as Stuart Ramsay’s team carefully drove through a town near Kiyv on Monday afternoon.
But, without warning, they came under heavy and sustained gunfire from what the Ukrainians believe to be a Russian reconnaissance squad.
"In this shocking video, Ukrainian soldiers on a routine patrol in the disputed region of Crimea are suddenly ambushed by Russian forces. The footage shows the soldiers desperately trying to defend themselves as they are surrounded by heavily armed Russian troops. The intense firefight lasted for several minutes, leaving several Ukrainian soldiers injured and captured. This brazen act of aggression by the Russian military has sparked international outrage and further escalated tensions between the two countries. Watch as we bring you the latest updates on this developing situation."

Why red means Republican and blue means Democrat
The major party color schemes, and the terms “red state” and "blue state," are actually a recent phenomenon.
The use of red to represent Republicans and blue to represent Democrats in the United States is a widely recognized convention in American politics. This convention has its roots in the TV networks' coverage of the 2000 presidential election, where red was used to represent states won by Republican candidate George W. Bush and blue was used to represent states won by Democratic candidate Al Gore.
Since then, the association of red with Republicans and blue with Democrats has become firmly established in the public consciousness and is now used by many news organizations, political analysts, and mapping platforms to represent the two major political parties in the United States.

We Are Living Through The Scariest Economic Experiment In History Right Now...And No One Knows It
Many countries around the world have, on paper...seemingly recovered from the economic collapse that occurred last year.
Unemployment rates are getting closer to normal, the number of business bankruptcies has hit a 2 year low, and the stock market is at an all time high?
On the surface, this seems great. But in reality, we are actually going through the biggest and scariest economic experiment in history. An experiment which could help bring us into a golden age of a new kind of economy...or it could bring us into a new dark age that the world has never seen before.
In the 7th century in China, copper coins were used as the main currency for chinese merchants. But these merchants at the time, began running into a problem.
You see, these coins were quite heavy and many of them could be used for a single transaction, which was quite inconvenient for carrying around a city.
So to combat this problem, Chinese merchants came up with the idea. What if they just deposited these heavy coins with a person or business, and received a piece of paper called, a promissory note, or banknote, in return? That way merchants would not have to carry around large amounts of heavy coins all day, and they can be safely stored at a single location.
And thus the primitive form of paper money was born, and was implemented throughout the currency system in China.
After a few centuries of using this type of currency system, the Chinese government noticed something strange. You see, a copper shortage caused the government to issue more of these promissory notes and less copper coins.
And during this time, the government saw a massive boost to its economy, allowing for the government to spend more on things like military and infrastructure.
So, they ran an economic experiment that would become very important to what we are experiencing today.
The chinese government declared that their new form of paper currency, was considered a public monopoly owned by the government. This allowed the ancient chinese government to completely control its own currency.
And for a couple hundred years, the governments ability to print money on command, and control inflation, worked well. But little did they know, a global threat was emerging out of central asia, that would change the course of history.
A man named Temujin had recently united the Mongol Tribes in the year 1206, and then became known as Genghis Khan. He soon launched the largest military conquest in human history, with his successors eventually taking over China and forming the yuan dynasty in 1271.
During the Yuan Dynasty, the newly formed Chinese/Mongol government wanted to keep spending government money to further fund their conquests. But instead of limiting their spending, or worrying about their government debt, they decided to just manufacture more and more paper money, in order to fund their military campaigns. They figured that because they were the government and had a public monopoly on its currency, they could do whatever they wanted with little or no repercussions. So they essentially revamped their paper money, turned it into the worlds first fiat currency, and started running their empire on a completely new economic theory.
And for a little while it worked.
But after years war in Japan, Vietnam, Burma, and Java, and years of ignoring debt and inflation, the economy of the Yuan Dynasty began to collapse.
Inflation rose to 80% in the early 1300’s, their was a severe debt crisis, the population became impoverished within the span of about 5 years, and the governments theory on how printing money could solve their economic problems came crashing down.
And it was this economic downfall combined with the governments inability to help its people after several natural disasters, that led to the collapse of the yuan dynasty in 1370.
One such experiment that is being closely watched by economists and financial experts is the use of unprecedented levels of monetary stimulus by central banks around the world. This has included the deployment of negative interest rates, the printing of large amounts of money, and the purchasing of government bonds and other assets on a massive scale. The goal of these actions is to boost economic growth and mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have also raised concerns about the long-term consequences of these policies.
