It's Only Rock And Roll Unexpected Selections Of The Rolling Stones
It's Only Rock and Roll unexpected selections of The Rolling Stones
It's Only Rock 'n Roll is the 12th British and 14th American studio album by the English band the Rolling Stones, released on 18 October 1974 by Rolling Stones Records. It was the last Rolling Stones album to feature guitarist Mick Taylor; the songwriting and recording of the album's title track had a connection to Taylor's eventual replacement, Ronnie Wood. It's Only Rock 'n Roll combines the core blues and rock 'n' roll–oriented sound with elements of funk and reggae. It's Only Rock 'n Roll reached number one in the United States and number two in the UK.
It's Only Rock 'n Roll was Mick Taylor's last album with the Rolling Stones. Similar to receiving no writing credits on the Stones' previous album, Goats Head Soup, Taylor reportedly had made songwriting contributions to "Till the Next Goodbye" and "Time Waits for No One", but on the album jacket, all original songs were credited to Jagger/Richards. Taylor said in 1997:
"I did have a falling out with Mick Jagger over some songs I felt I should have been credited with co-writing on It's Only Rock 'n Roll. We were quite close friends and co-operated quite closely on getting that album made. By that time Mick and Keith weren't really working together as a team so I'd spend a lot of time in the studio."
Taylor's statement contradicts Jagger's earlier comment concerning the album. Jagger stated in a 1995 Rolling Stone interview about "Time Waits for No One" that Taylor "maybe threw in a couple of chords".
Alongside the usual outside contributors, namely Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins and unofficial member Ian Stewart, Elton John sideman Ray Cooper acted as percussionist for the album. Several songs were finished songs and overdubs and mixing were performed at Jagger's home, Stargroves, in the early summer of 1974.
Luxury
Keith Richards got the idea for this from a song that came on the radio while he was driving in Munich.
Ray Cooper played percussion on this track. A British session musician, he played on most of Elton John's albums in the '70s, and has also recorded with Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Roger Waters.
Fingerprint File
The Rolling Stones used a funk sound on this that would emerge on their next album, Black And Blue. Unlike most of their songs, they did some improvisation on this one. Keith Richards explained in a 1975 interview with Sounds: "The middle and end part was totally off-the-cuff. It could have been a much tighter three-minute thing with just the vocal and riff but it got extended."
This was the last song Mick Taylor played on as a Stone. He was replaced by Ron Wood on the next album.
Mich Jagger played guitar on this track, which was something he rarely did. He also played the guitar when they performed it live.
On Keno's Rolling Stones website, this was voted the song by The Rolling Stones which was ahead of its time when released, for two main reasons: "It's rap like before there was rap, and was written years before the George W. Bush administration would do just about everything noted in the song."
Short and Curlies
“Short and Curlies” was recorded in Jamaica during the Goats Head Soup
sessions. This blues-rock number with a strong boogie-woogie accent was
reworked in Munich and then at Mick Jagger’s house, Stargroves, before
being finalized at Island Studios in London. The very good piano intro is
played by Ian Stewart, who only played on tracks he liked, leaving Nicky
Hopkins or Billy Preston the trouble of recording the ones that did not
interest him. “Stu always did what he wanted to do,” confirms Keith.
Having set up a boogie-woogie, indeed almost Dixieland, vibe, the pianist
is joined almost immediately by Mick Taylor with a brilliant and very
clear-toned slide guitar part, probably played on a Telecaster. Keith handles the
rhythm guitar, on which he provides unwavering support, apparently
leaving Mick Taylor to play lead, now with distortion. Charlie Watts
accompanies his bandmates with some excellent drumming, accentuating
the shuffle rhythm with the help of Bill Wyman, the two of them very much
at ease on this kind of track. As is Mick Jagger, whose performance again
lives up to his reputation. He doubles himself in the vocal harmonies and is
accompanied presumably by Keith. “Short and Curlies” is a good song that
resembles the melody of “Midnight Rambler” (Let It Bleed, 1969) in places.
It is a shame the Stones do not return to their roots more often.

"Nashville's police statement Thursday comes a week after local pols told The Post Hale's manifesto was a "blueprint on total destruction" and blamed the FBI for stalling its release.

It's "Lucy in the sky" and all kinds of apple pie
She giggles at the screen 'cos it looks so green
There's carpets on the pavements
And feathers in her eye
But sooner or later
Her new friends will realize
That Julie's been working for the drug squad
Julie's been working for the drug squad
She can even look you in the eye
Well it seemed like a dream
Too good to be true
Stash it in the bank while the tablets grow high
In their millions
And everybody's high
Hi, man
But there's someone looking down
From that mountainside
Cause Julie's been working for the drug squad
Cause Julie's been working for the drug squad
Gumbo
Ten years for you
Nineteen for you
And you can get out in twenty-five
That is if you're still alive
Oh, alive
Oh yeah, alive
Oh, alive
Oh
And then there came the night of the greatest ever raid
They arrested every drug that had ever been made
They took eighty-two laws
Through eighty-two doors
And they didn't halt the pull
Till the cells were all full
'Cos julie was working for the drug squad
Julie's been working for the drug squad
They put him in a cell
They said you wait here
You've got the time to count all of your hair
You've got fifteen years
A mighty long time
You could have been a physicist
But now your name is on the mailbag list
Julie's been working for the drug squad
Julie's been working for the drug squad
Gumbo
Ten years for you
Nineteen for you
And you can get out in twenty-five
That is if you're still alive
Oh, alive
You're still
I said, you're still

Big Time Peter Gabriel
Big Time with Peter Gaberial and Cyberdyne
Peter Gabriel has described "Big Time" as "a satirical story about a basic human urge... success."
Gabriel used a smorgasbord of sounds on this track, some of which were either processed through or generated by his synthesizers (a Fairlight CMI and Prophet 5) or drum machine (a Linn).
The Memphis Horns, who also appeared on "Sledgehammer," played on this one, as did Stewart Copeland of The Police, who contributed drums. The other credits read:
David Rhodes - guitar
Simon Clark - bass
Daniel Lanois - surf guitar
Jerry Marotta, Tony Levin - drumstick bass
Simon Clark - Hammond organ
Coral Gordon, Dee Lewis, PP Arnold - backing vocals
The video is filled with eye-catching special effects and played often on MTV. Gabriel raised the bar earlier that year with his video for "Sledgehammer," which like "Big Time," was directed by Stephen R. Johnson.
On the So tour, Gabriel didn't bring a horn section, so keyboard player David Sancious loaded the horn notes from the recording into an Akai sampler and played them back live. The sampler took floppy discs that had to be changed out between songs, so there were times when Gabriel stretched his stage patter while Sancious loaded the discs.
Daniel Lanois, who co-produced the album, isn't a fan of using computers to replace real-life instruments unless it's done with a specific purpose by someone who is passionate about the technology. "They have been especially useful when people have been really thrilled with them," he told Rolling Stone. "If somebody was to say to me, 'I've got an amazing bass sound on this Fairlight, and I want to use it,' I'd say, 'Terrific.'"
He used this track as an example of how to do it right, saying, "'Big Time,' on Peter Gabriel's record, was based around a Fairlight bass riff. And it had a certain kind of drive and robotic feel that you won't get out of a played bass."
This was used in these TV shows:
Young Sheldon ("A Patch, A Modem, And A Zantac" - 2017)
Everybody Hates Chris ("Everybody Hates Varsity Jackets" - 2009)
Cold Case ("The Lost Soul Of Herman Lester" - 2004)
And in these movies:
Postman Pat: The Movie (2014)
Inside Job (2010)
Perfect Body (1997)
This was used as the official theme song for WWE Wrestlemania 22 in 2006.
Terminator Lore
Cyberdyne initially began as a manufacturing corporation at 18144 El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, California. Founded in the early 1980s, its products were possibly computers or processors, as well as some sort of smaller parts producer for larger manufacturers of high tech equipment. As of 1984, the small company owned a factory.
A T-800 Terminator, which was sent from the future and designed to kill humans, programmed to assassinate Sarah Connor, was crushed in one of the hydraulic presses in Cyberdyne's factory. Thus, the company obtained the machine's wreckage, including its CPU chip and an arm.

Hi there!
I'm on my way, I'm making it (oh)
I've got to make it show, yeah
(Yeah!)
So much larger than life
I'm gonna watch it growing
The place where I come from is a small town
They think so small, they use small words
But not me
I'm smarter than that, I worked it out
I've been stretching my mouth
To let those big words come right out
I've had enough, I'm getting out to the city
The big, big city
I'll be a big noise with all the big boys
So much stuff I will own
And I will pray to a big God
As I kneel in the big church
(Big time)
I'm on my way, I'm making it (big time)
Ooh, yes (big time)
I've got to make it show, yeah (big time)

(Big time) I'm gonna watch it growing (big time)
My parties have all the big names
And I greet them with the widest smile
Tell them how my life is one big adventure
And always, they're amazed
When I show them 'round the house to my bed
I had it made like a mountain range
With a snow-white pillow for my big fat head
And my heaven will be a big heaven
And I will walk through the front door
(Big time)
I'm on my way, I'm making it (big time)
C'mon (big time)
I've got to make it show, yeah (big time)

Black Sabbath
I watched this bit and was thinking of an album, specifically 3 tunes from that album, and they all fit perfectly with no editing at all. even the credits were able to do a full roll. A ny mention of audio in the credits is incorrect, as that is my vice.
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is the fifth studio album by English band Black Sabbath, released in November 1973. It was produced by the band and recorded at Morgan Studios in London in September. The writing process for the album, which began in Los Angeles, California, was initially hampered in part by the band's substance abuse and fatigue following their 1972–1973 world tour in support of their previous album, Vol. 4. The band then relocated to Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, where guitarist Tony Iommi conceived the main riff of what became the album's title track and lead single.
Fluff
This track's name is a nod to disc jockey Alan Freeman, who'd used the group's previous instrumental track "Laguna Sunrise" as the intro for his radio show.
"Fluff" was played at Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi's first wedding, but the tape malfunctioned. The marriage malfunctioned too, and the couple broke up during the recording of the album Technical Ecstacy.
Spiral Architect
Sabbath bass player Geezer Butler, who wrote most of the their lyrics, had the words for this song come to him in a dream. He woke up the next morning and wrote them down. Later that day he called lead singer Ozzy Osbourne and read them to him - Ozzy was very impressed.
Wil Malone arranged the strings on this track. Other artists he's worked with include Todd Rundgren and Iron Maiden.
Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi originally attempted to play bagpipes on this track by simply going out to a music store, buying some, and bringing them back to the studio. The experiment was not a success: after struggling to fill the instrument's bladder with air, the band tried using a vacuum cleaner to inflate it. No luck there either. Tony was not destined to become a bagpipe player in a single day, and after wasting a bit of valuable studio time they scrapped the idea. (Source: Iron Man: My Journey through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath.)
Geezer Butler told Kerrang this song contains his favorite lyrics on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. He explained: "I had written them on my front lawn watching the sun come up, and it was a particularly good time in my life."
Following Black Sabbath's 1972–1973 world tour in support of their album, Vol. 4, the group returned to Los Angeles to begin work on its successor. Pleased with Vol. 4, the band sought to recreate the recording atmosphere, and returned to the Record Plant Studios. The band rented a house in Bel Air and began writing in the summer of 1973 but, due in part to substance abuse and fatigue, were unable to complete any songs. "Ideas weren't coming out the way they were on Vol. 4 and we really got discontent," said guitarist and songwriter Tony Iommi. "Everybody was sitting there waiting for me to come up with something. I just couldn't think of anything. And if I didn't come up with anything, nobody would do anything." In 2013, bassist Geezer Butler told Mojo magazine that after the tour in support of Vol. 4 the band was "absolutely, completely exhausted" and by the time they played the Hollywood Bowl, "Tony collapsed. It was really touch-and-go at one point whether he'd survive or not because he was totally depleted. So we had to cancel the rest of the tour and we actually took time off for the first time since the band started. We got away from each other and had a social life. Then we came back together to start on the next album, and couldn't come up with anything." In his autobiography I Am Ozzy, singer Ozzy Osbourne states that in the time leading up to the Hollywood Bowl "Tony had been doing coke literally for days – we all had, but Tony had gone over the edge. I mean, that stuff just twists your whole idea of reality. You start seeing things that aren't there. And Tony was gone. Near the end of the gig he walked off stage and collapsed." Regarding his writer's block, Iommi admitted to Phil Alexander in 2013, "I panicked because I didn't have a single idea about what to write. It might have been the drugs, it could have been the pressure, but either way I felt it was my fault." The band were also disappointed to discover that the room they had used previously at the Record Plant had been replaced with a "giant synthesizer" by Stevie Wonder, who had recently recorded there.
After a month in Los Angeles with no results, the band opted to return to the UK, where they rented Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, in which the likes of Led Zeppelin, Mott the Hoople and Deep Purple wrote and recorded. The medieval surroundings may have revitalised the band musically, but also left a sinister impression; in the liner notes to the 1998 live album Reunion, Iommi recalls, "We rehearsed in the armoury there and one night I was walking down the corridor with Ozzy and we saw this figure in a black cloak ... We followed this figure back into the armoury and there was absolutely no one there. Whoever it was had disappeared into thin air! The people that owned the castle knew all about this ghost and they said, 'Oh yes, that's the ghost of so and so. We were like 'What!?'" Adds Butler, "We rehearsed in the dungeons and it was really creepy but it had some atmosphere, it conjured up things, and stuff started coming out again". While working in the dungeon, Iommi stumbled onto the main riff of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", which set the tone for the new material. In 2001 Butler admitted to Dan Epstein of Guitar World, "We almost thought that we were finished as a band ... Once Tony came out with the initial riff for 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' we went 'We're baaaack!'" The spooky atmosphere at Clearwell Castle perfectly complemented the band's practice of playing practical jokes on one another. In the documentary Black Sabbath, Volume 1: 1970–1978 Iommi recalls, "I've got to be honest, we frightened the life out of each other. We had to leave in the end, everybody terrified of each other because we were playing jokes on each other and nobody knew who was doing it... We used to leave and drive all the way home and drive back the next day. It was really silly." In his autobiography Osbourne cracks, "We weren't so much the Lords of Darkness as the Lords of Chickenshit when it came to that kind of thing ... We wound each other up so much none of us got any sleep. You'd just lie there with your eyes wide open, expecting an empty suit of armour to walk into your bedroom at any second to shove a dagger up your arse." Osbourne also writes that he nearly burnt the castle down one night when he fell asleep with his boot in the fire. Osbourne said that when it came to the shenanigans Bill Ward typically "got the worst of it", with the drummer eventually going to bed at night with a dagger.
Although the band's then-manager Patrick Meehan received credit as co-producer, Iommi said years later that Meehan had virtually no actual involvement in the album's production, saying "Meehan's ego got involved, and he stuck his name down as producer". Recording was completed at Morgan Studios in Willesden, North London in 1973. Keyboardist Rick Wakeman of the band Yes (who were recording Tales from Topographic Oceans in the next studio) was brought in as a session player, appearing on "Sabbra Cadabra". Wakeman refused payment from the band and was ultimately compensated with beer for his contribution. The members of Led Zeppelin, close friends of the band from their early days in Birmingham, showed up at the studio during Sabbath Bloody Sabbath's recording. Drummer John Bonham was eager to play on "Supernaut", but Sabbath preferred to play material other than their own for the occasion. In the end, the two bands had an improvised jam session which was recorded but never released.
Osbourne has said that Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was "the beginning of the end" for Black Sabbath's original line-up. In 2013, the singer elaborated to Mojo, "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was really the album after which I should have said goodbye because after that I really started unravelling. Then we ended up falling out of favour with each other." Fuelled by rampant drug and alcohol use within the band, tensions began to mount. Iommi began to resent doing the lion's share of songwriting and studio work, thus having no social life. Bassist Butler also began complaining that vocalist Osbourne had become too reliant on him for lyrics.

Choo Choo Mama Ten Years After
Choo Choo Mama
Ten Years After
Rock & Roll Music to the World is the seventh studio album by the English band Ten Years After, released in 1972. It includes several Ten Years After standards, including "Standing at the Station", "Choo Choo Mama", and the title track.
Woodstock made Ten Years After into world stars.
It was getting dark by the time Ten Years After took the stage at Woodstock back in 1969. The rain had come bucketing down mid-way through the afternoon, just as they’d been about to go on, drenching the stage and turning the site into a quagmire.
The audience – variously estimated at between 350,000 and 500,000 – was wet, chilled and bedraggled; many of them were the worse for wear after three days in the open. The band weren’t in much better shape, having travelled overnight from St Louis, making the last leg by helicopter and then being cooped up on-site in the back of a trailer, waiting for the rain to stop.
In the movie of Woodstock, the camera picks out the skinny frame of TYA’s Alvin Lee, his boyish face ringed by shoulder-length blond hair. “This is a thing called ‘I’m Going Home’… by helicopter!” he announces, and for a dozen seconds he rattles out notes on his trademark Gibson guitar that sound like a sustained burst of machine-gun fire.
The band then kick into a breakneck boogie and the song takes off; Alvin spits out the vocals, filling in the spaces with more guitar salvos. The camera remains fixed on him; there are just occasional glimpses of keyboard player Chick Churchill, drummer Ric Lee (no relation) and bassist Leo Lyons, who is headbanging furiously. Alvin leads the song high and low, never letting the pace flag, until nine minutes later he builds to a final warp-speed cacophony.
The crowd, their central heating now restored... erupts.

Death or Glory The Clash
"Death or Glory" is the motto of The Royal Lancers, an armored cavalry regiment in the British 1st Armored Infantry Brigade. It's one of the best known mottoes in England. Joe and the lads were cocking a snook at the myth of the noble, honorable military in this song.
The amusing lyric, "he who f--ks nuns will later join the church" is a metaphor for teenagers who rebel against authority growing up and becoming authority figures themselves, becoming all that they fought against before.
Journalist Lester Bangs believed the lyric about a "gimmick-hungry yob" related specifically to Sham 69 lead singer Jimmy Pursey, although as The Clash were friends with Pursey and the band this unlikely and is more likely a generic reference to bands trying to make a quick buck out of rock music.
Freyr is a member of the Vanir tribe. There are two tribes of gods in Norse mythology, the Vanir and the Aesir. The Vanir are generally considered fertility gods, while the Aesir are known as warrior gods.
As such, it makes sense that Freyr is known as a god of fertility and peace. He is also strongly associated with the sun, which gives us a good idea of his importance. Across many cultures, sun gods tend to be at, or close to, the top of their respective pantheons.
Freyr is described in old poems as being first among the gods when it came to reputation. Apparently, no one disliked him among all the people.
Freyr is usually depicted as a virile, muscular man with long flowing hair. Often, he is carrying a sword and he is almost always accompanied by his gigantic golden-bristled boar, Gullinbursti. Since Freyr is both the son of the ocean god and himself the sun god, we can see both of those themes in artwork that depicts him. Some images will show him holding an antler, since in one of his myths he is forced to give his sword away and must make do with an antler instead. As a god of fertility, Freyr is sometimes shown as a man who is very well-endowed.
Like nearly all of the Norse gods, Freyr is part giant – in this case, on his mother’s side. He’s the son of the frost giantess, Skadi, and the god of the sea, Njord. He is also the twin brother of his equally beautiful and famous sister Freyja. His sister rules over much that Freyr does, but additionally presides over death and war.
Some accounts do not identify Skadi as Freyr’s mother, but rather as the unnamed sister of Njord. In that case, Freyr’s mother would also be his aunt, but that sort of marriage was not at all uncommon among the gods.
After Freyr was born, he was given a gift to commemorate his first tooth, which is a Norse tradition. That gift was Alfheim, one of the nine worlds in the branches of Yggdrasil and home to the elves. It’s not clear if this actually makes Freyr the ruler of Alfheim, but it certainly was his home.
Over the course of his life, Freyr came into possession of many treasures, much as you’d expect for a god of wealth.
One of his greatest treasures was his ship, Skithblathnir. This ship was an amazing magical vessel that always had a favorable wind, no matter what. That, however, was not its greatest trick: Skithblathnir could be folded up into a tiny object that could fit inside a bag. This amazing ship let Freyr travel the seas easily. On land he wasn’t forced to go on foot, either. He had a magnificent chariot drawn by boars that brought peace wherever it went.
One of the most famous stories in Freyr’s history tells us how he fell in love. After the war between the Aesir and the Vanir was over, Freyr became one of the hostages who joined the Aesir. One day, he decided to sit on Odin’s throne, which had the power to show the user anything in the nine worlds of Yggdrasil.
Since he is such a prominent god in Norse mythology there are extensive writings about him and his deeds. As with most Norse mythology, we can read about him in the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda. There are many archeological forms of evidence that Freyr has been worshipped.
Worship of Freyr is especially associated with Sweden, so much so that it is believed the Swedish royal house directly descends from him. Clearly, he is woven deeply into the culture and history of the Scandinavian and Germanic people, a radiant god whose presence can still be felt today in the art and stories of that part of the world.

Let It Roll Little Feat
I grew up a few miles from the sign with the yellow car... Chevy Vega...
OCT. 13, 1981 -- The guilty pleas of the Dillon County South Carolina Democratic chairman and six others brings to 36 the number of people convicted of vote fraud in the June 1980 party primary, and authorities say the probe is continuing.
Alan H. Schafer, 67, a multi-millionaire amusement park owner (South of the Border) and beer distributor, pleaded guilty Monday to three charges rather than go through a trial.
The investigation focused on absentee ballots cast for former Sheriff Roy Lee who received 1,265 to Greg Rogers' 81.
Schafer, the owner of the 'South of the Border' tourist complex whom Gov. Dick Riley suspended as a state highway commissioner, faces up to 15 years in prison and $12,000 in fines.
Schafer, dressed conservatively in a dark blue suit, light blue shirt and striped tie, impassively entered his plea of guilty to one count of conspiracy and two counts of mail fraud. He then avoided reporters by exiting from a side door of the courthouse.
Schafer was charged with 16 counts of conspiracy and mail fraud and one count of obstructing justice by telling someone to destroy 200 unnumbered absentee ballots after the election.
The other defendants, indicted last July with Schafer, were: Lee, former Dillon County Deputy Sheriff William P. Jones, suspended Dillon County Councilman Elwood McQueen and Dillon County residents Ralph Lane, Leon Moody and David K. Bethea. They each face up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
Lloyd 'Mickey' Meekins Jr., a suspended Dillon County councilman, also was indicted in the case. But he pleaded guilty to reduced charges in July and reportedly has been hidden under the government's witness protection program...
Among the other people convicted of vote fraud is State Sen. Eugene Carmichael, D-Dillon. He was convicted last summer of vote buying, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. He received a 10-year prison sentence and $20,000 fine.

Night Of The Long Knives Spellbound ACDC
This is the title track to the AC/DC album that followed Back In Black, one of the best-selling albums of all time. Back In Black never hit #1 on the US albums chart, but For Those About To Rock did.
For Those About to Rock is the eighth studio album by AC/DC. It was released on 20 November 1981 in the United States, 27 November 1981 in the United Kingdom and 7 December 1981 in Australia.
For Those About to Rock became the first AC/DC album to ever hit No. 1 in the US on the Billboard chart and stayed on the top for three weeks. To date, in the US, it has achieved four million sales. In the UK, the album's two singles, "Let's Get It Up" and "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)", made it to No. 13 and No. 15, respectively. The album has sold an estimated seven million copies worldwide, making it one of the highest sold AC/DC albums worldwide.
However it marks a major drop-off in sales in the United States, only selling 4 million as follow-up to the 25× platinum Back in Black. In a 2008 Rolling Stone cover story, David Fricke singled out the title track for praise, noting its "unusual stop-start effect that hooks you just as hard as their usual railroad drive."

I'm Your Captain Closer To Home Grand Funk Railroad
RUMBLE, WHY ARE YOU BLOCKING THIS VIDEO FROM YOUR SEARCH AND NOT PROVIDING A THUMBNAIL FOR CROSSPOSTS?
Grand Funk guitarist Mark Farner wrote this and sang lead. Literally, the song is about the captain of a ship who is sick and fears he is going to lose his vessel. The song has much more metaphoric significance, however. In a Songfacts interview with Farner, he explained how the lyric came to him from the heavens:
"Initially the song came to me after I said my prayers one night and I put a P.S. on the end of my prayers. I asked God to give me a song that would touch the hearts of people that the Creator wanted to get to. I got up at 3 o'clock in the morning - I'm always getting up at different times of the night and writing things down. A lot of them are not songs but this happened to be one.
I got up and I wrote it, and as I'm writing it, I'm between the state of subconscious and conscious. I've got one foot in dreamland and my pen is writing these words down. It didn't make a whole lot of sense. It was kind of weird, I thought, as I was writing it. I didn't sit there on the edge of the bed and read it over and over, I just wrote it down, and when I got to the end of it, I just folded it over and put it on the nightstand. There it was."
Farner put the lyrics he dreamed up to music the following morning. After having some coffee and looking at the horses in the pasture, he grabbed his George Washburn flattop guitar and started playing. "I made that C chord," he told Songfacts. "I made a mistake. I was going for the G and it was a little short and I hit the C. And I looked down because that chord spoke to me in such a way. I've never heard that come out, that inversion of the C. I thought, Wow, that's a cool chord. Then I thought maybe with those words in the other room, maybe that's a song, so I grabbed the legal pad and laid it down on the table next to my coffee and I just started strumming. 'Everybody...' And it just started coming out."
Much like "Hey Jude" by The Beatles, this song stretches out with a very long outro where an orchestra plays and Farner sings the line, "I'm getting closer to my home" over and over. Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer told Songfacts how that came about. "We used to rehearse at a place called The Musicians Union Hall in Flint, Michigan," said Brewer. "We used to work all of our stuff out there. Mark came in one day with basically the beginning of the song, the 'I'm your captain part.' We always worked out everything with a jam - he would have an idea, somebody would have an idea for a bass part of whatever, and we'd just kind of work on these things and jam out. For a day or two we worked on this song and it just didn't go any place, that was about as far as we could get with it.
One day, coming out of a jam that we were working on, we fell into that half time part, and that's when Mark came up with the lyrics, 'I'm getting closer to...' So we had that, and we all felt, 'Oh man, that's great, we'll put that piece together with that, and that's going to work,' then we said, 'What are we going to do from there?' So we got into the guitar part where it breaks into full time again. Then we had a brainstorming session, 'What are we going to do for the rest of the song?'
At the time, rock bands had experimented with orchestras, and we said, 'Let's put an orchestra on this thing, we'll just play endlessly, and we'll get Tommy Baker, our friend down in Cleveland, to write the score for it, and we'll put an orchestra on it. It was a new thing for us, kind of new for the day - there hadn't been too many bands using orchestras. When we recorded the song in Cleveland, we didn't have the orchestra there, we didn't know what the final outcome was going to be, we hadn't even recorded the string arrangements, we just recorded the end of the song on and on and on over and over, knowing they were going to come in and put an orchestra on it later. When we finally heard the song about two weeks later, it just blew us all away. It was a religious experience."
On the album, the song runs 10:09, which wasn't a problem for the many FM radio stations that were happy to play it. The single version, sent to radio stations with tighter formats, goes 5:31, which is still far longer than most pop songs. Still, it reached #22 on the Hot 100 in October 1970, giving the band their biggest hit to that point. Repeat play on FM rock radio kept it around for generations.
In 1973, Grand Funk exploded with their #1 hit "We're An American Band" and became one of the top live acts in the US. "Closer To Home" remained a fan favorite and staple of their setlists.
The song appears under a number of titles because the anthem, essentially presented in two parts, repeats its parenthetical refrain to a shifting symphonic crescendo. Accordingly, it's been listed five different ways on subsequent Grand Funk albums: "I'm Your Captain," "I'm Your Captain / Closer To Home," "Closer To Home / I'm Your Captain," "Closer To Home (I'm Your Captain)" and "Closer To Home." It first appeared on the band's third studio album, Closer To Home, as "I'm Your Captain."
When this song was released in 1970, the Vietnam War was still going on but there seemed to be no path to victory for the American soldiers fighting there. This song resonated with the troops. "If you're in a foxhole in Vietnam, you're pinned down by so much fire coming in, you want to be Closer To Home," Mark Farner told Songfacts. "That song 'Closer To Home' just really registered with our Vietnam brothers and sisters."
The Closer To Home album was released on June 15, 1970. The day before, Grand Funk's label, Capitol Records, unveiled a huge billboard in New York City's Time Square to promote it at a cost of about $100,000. This thing was impossible to miss: It took up an entire city block. The album got a huge sales bump from the publicity, as did this song. The billboard was supposed to run for two months, but stayed up about five months because of a labor dispute with billboard workers.

Neighbor Ugly Kid Joe
In this song, Ugly Kid Joe frontman Whitfield Crane sings from the perspective of a southerner who moves into an idyllic suburban Jewish community. The song was written by the band's guitarist, Klaus Eichstadt, who after the song was released told Crane that the song was really about him.
Connecting Crane to the character isn't much of a stretch: He and Eichstadt grew up in upper-class Palo Alto, California, where they were rather disruptive in their youth.
In our interview with Whitfield Crane, he said: "I think about that as that's 1992, we were blowing up. Lyrically, it's this family that moves into the suburbs - somewhere like Palo Alto where Klaus and I grew up - and torture their neighbors through wine, women, and song. It reminds me of good times."
The video made an episode of MTV's Beavis and Butt-head.
Beavis: "How come he calls himself Ugly Kid? He's not even that ugly."
Butt-head: "Do you find him attractive, Beavis?"

One Night in Bangkok Murray Head
The song tells of the meeting of two great chess players, one Soviet and one American, in Bangkok, which is the capital of Thailand. Chess is a musical production that uses a US-USSR chess rivalry as a metaphor for the Cold War, but this song just contains double-entendres about the game of Chess compared to the Bangkok nightlife. The example often used is "I would invite you, but the queens we use would not excite you."
Chess was a musical that premiered in London's West End. This song was written for the 1984 concept album, which was recorded well ahead of the production. The album was very successful considering it was for a musical. The album charted in the Top 10 in the UK, #47 in the US, and #1 in Sweden. Another song from the album, "I Know Him So Well," held the #1 spot in the UK for four weeks in February 1985, being deposed by "You Spin Me Right Round" by Dead or Alive. The Broadway production of Chess was heavily altered and unsuccessful. >>
Along with the rest of the songs from Chess, the music was written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA, and Tim Rice wrote the lyrics. Rice has written for many film and theatrical productions, including the song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" from The Lion King.
A little over 2 minutes into this song, there is a flute solo using a difficult flutter tongue technique similar to that used on many Jethro Tull songs. It was played by a Swedish musician named Bjorn Jason Lindh.
Murray Head is an actor who has been in several movies and stage productions. He is barely out of the one-hit-wonder category because of his 1971 version of "Superstar" from the Jesus Christ Superstar production where he played Judas. It his #14 in the US in 1971.
Before Murray went to Mill Hill he had been at Hampton Grammar School with Paul Samwell-Smith (ex-Yardbirds & Cat Stevens' producer) In 1975 Paul Samwell Smith made a record of Murray's songs for Islands Records. The album Say It Ain't So became a cult album in France. His father was Seafield Head, a documentary maker, and is Mother was Helen Shingler, an actress who played Mrs. Maigret alongside Rupert Davies as Maigret in the 60's TV series of the same name. His younger brother is Anthony 'Little Britain' Head. >>
A dance remix by the German production team Vinylshakerz was released in 2005.
Mike Tyson performs this in the 2011 movie The Hangover 2, which of course takes place mostly in Bangkok. Tyson appears as a surprise wedding guest and takes the stage near the end of the movie.

Jesus Christ Superstar Trial Before Pilate
In the 1970s, an opera about Jesus of Nazareth helped blaze the trail between rock ‘n roll and musical theater. Though Jesus Christ Superstar's radical songs divided religious groups, they conquered the Billboard charts. The show also ushered in Broadway’s “British invasion” of the 1970s and 1980s, setting the stage for such mega-hits as Cats and Les Miserables.
Lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who met in 1965 when they were 20 and 17, respectively, enjoyed their first taste of shared success with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1968. Next, the duo focused on another Biblical figure: Jesus of Nazareth. The pair envisioned a daring new rock musical that would retell—from Judas’s perspective—the story of Christ’s betrayal and execution. But Lloyd Webber and Rice couldn’t find anyone who was willing to produce the project as a stage show—Lloyd Webber recalled that they were told it was "the worst idea in history." So they transformed it into an 87-minute, two-disc concept album instead; it was released in 1970.

Manacled, beaten by your own people
Do you have a first idea why you deserve it?
Listen, king of the Jews
Where is your kingdom?
Look at me—am I a Jew?
[JESUS]
I have no kingdom
In this world I'm through

Talk to me, Jesus Christ
[JESUS]
There may be a kingdom for me somewhere
If you only knew
[PILATE]
Then you are a king?
[JESUS]
It's you that say I am
I look for truth, and find that I get damned
[PILATE]
But what is truth? Is truth unchanging law?
We both have truths
Are mine the same as yours?
[MOB]
Crucify him! Crucify him!
[PILATE]
What do you mean? You'd crucify your king?
[MOB]
We have no king but Caesar!
[PILATE]
He's done no wrong
No, not the slightest thing!
[MOB]
We have no king but Caesar! Crucify him!
[PILATE]
Well this is new—respect for Caesar!
Till now this has been noticeably lacking
Who is this Jesus? Why is he different?
You Jews produce Messiahs by the sack full
[MOB]
We need him crucified
It’s all you have to do
We need him crucified
It’s all you have to do
[PILATE]
Talk to me Jesus Christ
Look at your Jesus Christ
I’ll agree he’s mad
Ought to be locked up
But there is not a reason to destroy him
He’s a sad little man
Not a king or God
Not a thief
I need a crime
[MOB]
Crucify him, crucify him
[PILATE]
Behold a man, behold your shattered king
[MOB]
We have no king but Caesar
[PILATE]
You hypocrites, you hate us more than him
[MOB]
We have no king but Caesar, crucify him
[PILATE]
I see no reason, I find no evil
This man is harmless so why does he upset you?
He's just misguided, thinks he's important
But to keep you vultures happy, I shall flog him
[MOB]
Crucify him! Crucify him!
Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him!
Crucify him! Crucify him!
Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him!
Crucify him! Crucify him!
Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him!

[PILATE]
Where are you from Jesus? What do you want Jesus? Tell me
You've got to be careful, you could be dead soon
Could well be
Why do you not speak when I hold your life in my hands?
How can you stay quiet? I don't believe you understand
[JESUS]
You have nothing in your hands
Any power you have comes to you from far beyond
Everything is fixed, and you can't change it
[PILATE]
You're a fool, Jesus Christ, how can I help you?
[MOB]
Pilate, crucify him, crucify him
Remember Caesar, you have a duty
To keep the peace, so crucify him
Remember Caesar, you'll be demoted, you'll be deported
Crucify him
Remember Caesar, you have a duty
To keep the peace, so crucify him
Remember Caesar, you'll be demoted, you'll be deported
Crucify him
Remember Caesar, you have a duty
To keep the peace, so crucify him
Remember Caesar, you'll be demoted, you'll be deported
Crucify him
[PILATE]
Don't let me stop your great self-destruction
Die if you want to, you misguided martyr
I wash my hands of your demolition
Die if you want to, you innocent puppet

Skate Away With Romeo And Juliet Dire Straits
Skate Away with Romeo and Juliet Dire Straits
"Skateaway" is a 1980 rock song by Dire Straits, dealing with a female roller-skater breezing through busy city streets, while listening to a portable radio through her headphones. It appears on the band's 1980 album Making Movies. It was released as a single in 1980, and in January 1981 peaked at number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 37 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was accompanied by a video that was popular on MTV, featuring musician Jayzik Azikiwe (1958-2008) as Rollergirl. The daughter of Nigeria's first president Nnamdi Azikiwe, she was credited as Jay Carly in the video directed by Lester Bookbinder.
Record World said that the narrative is "as vivid as [Knopfler's] guitar is distinctive". Ultimate Classic Rock critic Michael Gallucci rated "Skateaway" as Dire Straits' 7th best song, saying that it "sticks closer to a traditional rock-radio format" than the other songs on Making Movies.
"Romeo and Juliet" is a rock song by the British rock band Dire Straits, written by frontman Mark Knopfler. It first appeared on the 1980 album Making Movies and was released as a single in 1981. The song subsequently appeared on the Dire Straits live albums Alchemy and On the Night, and later on Knopfler's live duet album with Emmylou Harris, Real Live Roadrunning (though Harris does not perform on the track). The track was also featured on the greatest hits albums Money for Nothing, Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits, and The Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler: Private Investigations.
The song was written by Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler and inspired by his broken romance with Holly Vincent, leader of the band Holly And The Italians. Some of the lyrics indicate that Knopfler felt she used him to boost her career:
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals.
The line, "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him," came from an interview where Holly Vincent was quoted as saying: "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up."
Mark Knopfler's younger brother David, who was rhythm guitarist in Dire Straits, left the band during the album sessions. Having two brothers in the same band caused tension and arguments. Said David: "I left because it was no longer possible for Mark and I to work in the same band. We'd be walking around in the studio with eyes averted to the floor. We no longer had a communicating relationship."
To help fill out the sound, Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band played keyboards on the album.
Running an even six-minutes long, "Romeo And Juliet" was the second single (following "Skateaway") from the third Dire Straits album, Making Movies. The album was recorded at The Power Station in New York City with producer Jimmy Iovine, who had been engineer/mixer on Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run and producer on Patti Smith's Easter.
Dire Straits made a video for this song along with two others from the album: "Skateaway" and "Tunnel Of Love." All three were directed by Lester Bookbinder and sold on VHS as a compilation called Making Movies. MTV went on the air a year later, but didn't play them - they were too long, slow, and cerebral for their audience. Dire Straits got plenty of airtime on the network a few years later for their acclaimed CGI video for "Money For Nothing."
The line, "He's underneath the window she's singing, 'hey la my boyfriend's back'" references the Angels' 1963 hit "My Boyfriend's Back."
"Skateaway" runs 6:40 on the album but was cut down to 4:45 for the single. The song didn't get a lot of airplay but found a devoted following and earned airplay decades later on Classic Rock radio, where the full version was typically played.
"Skateaway" preceded MTV by a year, but Dire Straits made a high-end video for it anyway as part of a compilation they sold on home video that also included the videos for "Romeo And Juliet" and "Tunnel Of Love." All of them were directed by Lester Bookbinder.
The rollergirl in the "Skateaway" video is credited as "Jay Carly," but several sources claim it was really Jayzik Azikiwe, the daughter of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, president of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966. Azikiwe, a renown poet, died of cancer in 2008 at 49.
The song builds slowly from silence, which sometimes caused a panic response from FM Radio DJs with rabbit ears for dead air back in the day.

USS Franklin (CV-13) Listed 13 degrees after being hit, and survived.
The Franklin originated as a United Earth starship in Earth Starfleet service in the 22nd century, notably as the first Warp 4 prototype. (TOS movie: Star Trek Beyond)
This ship was one of a number of vessels named Franklin, for various persons and places that share that name, including Benjamin Franklin, a statesman of Earth history. Another ship in service in the year 2159 also shared this name, the Strider-class USS Franklin. (ST video game: Legacy)
After service to Earth as the prototype Warp 4 vessel, this vessel was eventually adopted into Federation Starfleet service, commanded by Balthazar M. Edison, following the founding of the United Federation of Planets. (TOS movie: Star Trek Beyond)
On 01 July 2164, Uraei accessed Starfleet Command and generated an order to have Mosel Thomas assigned to the Franklin. Thomas had been part of Admiral Ko Ji-hoon and Professor Aaron Ikerson's conspiracy attempt against Uraei. (ST - Section 31 novel: Control)
The Franklin disappeared in 2164 during a mission in the Gagarin Radiation Belt. Popular speculation ranged from the ship being captured by Romulans to being captured by a giant green hand. In truth, the Franklin was displaced by a wormhole, and crash-landed on the planet Altamid. Only Edison and two others survived. (TOS movie: Star Trek Beyond)
Kelvin timeline
In the Kelvin timeline, the Franklin was rediscovered in 2263 by Captain James T. Kirk and the survivors of the USS Enterprise crashed on the planet Altamid. By then, it was the home of Jaylah, who had placed it under a holographic cloak to hide the ship from Edison, who by then was known as Krall.
Repairing the Franklin, Kirk and the crew of the late starship Enterprise left Altamid and defeated Krall as he attempted to destroy Yorktown Station with a bio-weapon. After the incident, the ship crashed into Yorktown Station, with the surviving crew members disembarking there. The ship was later recovered by Starfleet and officially decommissioned.(TOS - Boldly Go comic: "Issue 5"; TOS movie: Star Trek Beyond)
The Franklin was the first starship of Earth's Starfleet to reach warp four. Among its armaments were pulsed phase cannons and spatial torpedoes, with polarized hull plating for defense. Among its vehicles were some shuttlepods and a PX-70 motorcycle. Some uniforms, jackets and medical equipment were left aboard. Also a collection of music, which included "Sabotage", was kept in a music player. (TOS movie: Star Trek Beyond)
"Children of the Sea" is a song by heavy metal band Black Sabbath, from their ninth studio album, Heaven and Hell (1980).
"Children of the Sea" was the first song written by the band following the 1979 departure of original lead singer Ozzy Osbourne. The song's melody and lyrics were composed by new singer, Ronnie James Dio, and the music was written largely by guitarist Tony Iommi.
After first meeting Iommi in 1979, Dio arrived at the guitarist's Los Angeles house for a jam session, and on that occasion the duo wrote the song. "Tony had this great riff he played me but nothing to go with it," recalled Dio. "I said, 'Gimme a minute' and went into the corner and started writing down the words." Iommi recalled the moment as a turning point in Black Sabbath's career, saying "It was exciting and challenging because we were doing things that quite frankly would have been beyond us with Ozzy. He wasn't that sort of singer." Iommi claims to still possess a very early demo recording of the song with Osbourne on vocals, though with a different melody and lyrics.
Once Dio had joined the band, a new demo recording of the song was produced featuring Geoff Nicholls on bass. The band's longtime bassist, Geezer Butler, was going through a divorce and wasn't able to commit to the band. "In the end though, Geezer sorted himself out and Geoff stayed with us to play keyboards", said Iommi.
The song was recorded live at Deeside Leisure Centre on 20 May 1980 and appears as the B-side of the single "Neon Knights".
"Children of the Sea" was ranked the 18th best Black Sabbath song by Rock - Das Gesamtwerk der größten Rock-Acts im Check.
