Epictetus was a Greek philosopher associated with the Stoics who was born about AD 55, most likely in Hierapolis, Phrygia (now Pamukkale, Turkey), and died around AD 135 in Nicopolis, Epirus (Greece). Epictetus, who was mostly concerned with ethics, defined philosophy as the study of "how it is possible to employ desire and aversion without hindrance." First emerging in the sixth century BCE, ancient Greek philosophy is a school of thought that was influenced by an emphasis on the First Cause of observable events. The ancient Greeks believed that the universe had been created by the gods before Thales of Miletus (c. 585 BCE) developed this worldview. Thales proposed that water was the First Cause of existence, yet he did not reject the presence of the gods. Since Greek religion already identified water as a life-giving force that ringed the earth with the gods, this notion was not met with accusations of impiety. Anaximander (c. 610–c. 546 BCE) and Anaximenes (c. 546 BCE), followers of Thales, carried on his research and explorations of the nature of reality but proposed several elements as the First Cause. The so-called Pre-Socratic Philosophers, who engaged in philosophical speculation and the development of various schools of thought from Thales' initial endeavors up to the time of Socrates of Athens (c. 470/469-399 BCE), expanded the scope of philosophy, according to his most famous student Plato (c. 424/423-348/347 BCE), to address not only the First C. These three men initiated the line of inquiry known as ancient Greek philosophy, which was developed by the so- Aristotle of Stagira (c. 384–322 BCE) was motivated by Plato's writings to found his own school with a philosophy that was founded on but radically different from Plato's own. The majority of philosophy that the Romans accepted and practiced was largely based on Greek ideas that they came into contact with as Rome conquered Greece, much like Roman mythology and theatre. Epicureanism and Stoicism were the two main schools of philosophy in Rome, though they were by no means the only ones. A philosophy known as ecclesiasm holds that the pursuit of pleasure is the highest good and the path to peace, freedom from fear, and relief from physical suffering. Epicurus is credited with founding this school of thought, and Lucretius' "On the Nature of Things" is the primary extant work that conveys its principles to the general public. According to the stoic philosophy, life is best conducted in accordance with reason, on the basis of knowledge, and with full indifference to both pleasure and pain. Zeon developed this school of thought, and it has endured to the present day as a very prominent school of thought. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was a mathematician and astronomer who proposed that the sun was stationary in the center of the universe and the earth revolved around it. In order to eliminate Ptolemy's equant, a hypothetical point around which the celestial bodies appeared to follow Aristotle's requirement for the uniform circular motion of all celestial bodies, Copernicus decided that he could only accomplish his goal by using a heliocentric model. Although Copernicus's heliocentric theory was very divisive at the time, it marked the beginning of a shift in how people perceived the world, and Copernicus came to be recognized as the father of the Scientific Revolution. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a heliocentric system, that the planets orbit around the Sun; that Earth is a planet which, besides orbiting the Sun annually, also turns once daily on its own axis; and that very slow changes in the direction of this axis account for the precession of the equinoxes. Seneca, full name Lucius Annaeus Seneca, sometimes known as Seneca the Younger, was a Roman philosopher, statesman, orator, and tragedian who was born in Corduba (now Córdoba), Spain, around 4 BC and died in Rome, Italy, in AD 65 . In the middle of the first century CE, when Rome was at the height of its intellectual power, he and his friends effectively ruled the Roman world between 54 and 62, during the early years of Emperor Nero's rule. Seneca is known as a writer for his tragedies-only plays and philosophical writings. His written works include 124 letters and 12 essays that address moral dilemmas. One of the most significant collections of original sources for ancient stoicism is represented by these writings. Seneca aligns with the Stoics that happiness can be attained through virtue. Contrary to one's surroundings, one can control their virtue. According to Stoicism, one's understanding of one's own nature is crucially linked to their understanding of nature as a whole. In his writings, Seneca frequently emphasizes the value of comprehending nature. Seneca was exiled to Corsica in 41 AD after being charged of adultery with Julia Livilla, the emperor's niece. He had already achieved fame as a writer and philosopher. In exile, he continued to write plays and philosophy. He wrote that "one man's exile was but a drop in the sea of human upheaval," using the traditional stoic expression. Edmund Burke was a British statesman, parliamentary orator, and political theorist who was significant in the history of political theory and was active in public life from about 1765 to about 1795. Burke was born in Dublin, Ireland, on January 12 [January 1, Old Style], 1729, and died in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England, on July 9, 1797.
