Is Sukošan worth visiting on a day trip from Zadar? #croatia
In this video I’ll show you around the Croatian town of Sukošan and show you what we saw when we visited.
The town is located around 10 kilometres south of Zadar main bus station. Liburnija’s bus route 140 takes around 30 minutes and runs regular services during week days, but less often at the weekend. You arrive on the busy main road through Sukošan, called the Adriatic Highway which continues all the way to Split. There’s a Tisak beside the bus stop on the southbound side, and there’s a bakery, supermarket and other shops near the bus stop on the northbound side.
We also saw this interesting, crumbing monument but we weren’t quite sure what it was for. Anyway let’s head into the old town, away from the busy road.
You’ll soon pass this unmissable bright yellow private hospital building, and right next door a Konzum supermarket. But if you continue on this road you’ll reach the heart of Sukošan, the main square.
The most significant building here is the Church of Our Lady of Mercy
Which was built in 1650 during the Siege of Candida. It features interesting pre-Romanesque door posts that date further back to the 9th and 10th century. So, an early form of recycling! The church faces onto The Upper Gate. This is the only remaining part of the old city walls that were built by the Venetian authorities between 1468 and 1470. Passing through it you can lose yourself in a maze of narrow streets of old Sukošan.
Eventually though you’ll end up at the Church of St Cassian a beautiful stone church and bell tower with Romanesque and baroque details thought to have been built in 1642. Let’s continue on down to the waterfront. Here you’ll spot Sukošan’s most famous tourist attraction, the ruins of the Palac Archdiocesan Mansion. It was built on this man made island in the 15th century to serve as a summer retreat for the Zadar church dignitaries. Perhaps poor building standards, or just the ravages of time, have left it in the ruins you see today, which you can swim or kayak to from the shore for a closer look. Also here at the waterfront you’ll find this statue of the locally famous donkey called Viola. Every year a comical donkey race is run in honour of Viola right here at the sea front. This is a great place to relax and enjoy local food and drink and you can also find the modest Sukošan sign here on the quayside affording you a memorable photo of your visit. I’ll leave you now to enjoy some more views of Sukošan and its lovely coastline.

DON'T DO THIS IN EDINBURGH | Greyfriars Bobby Statue
Don't risk annoying the residents of Edinburgh when you visit. Here's one thing you should avoid doing when visiting Scotland. Don't touch the nose of the Greyfriars dog statue. It's not lucky, and it just damages the statue meaning it needs it's nose replaced regularly! Also, local people think you're stupid for doing this. So, quit it!

Sailing JADRAN - Preko (Ugljan Island) to Zadar Gaženica port - Croatia
How to get the ferry boat from Preko on Ugljan Island to Zadar Gaženica port in Croatia. Find out where to board the Jadrolinja ferry called "JADRAN", where to buy tickets for the ferry from Preko and Zadar, and what the ship is like on board.
Some of the questions you might have that I answer in this video includes:
Does the ferry have toilets or a cafe?
Where do you buy tickets for the ferry?
Where does the ship sail from?
Where does the ship sail to on Uglijan?
How big is the ship between Zadar and Preko?
In this video I’ll show you how to get from Ugljan Island to Zadar port Gaženica Sailing on Jadrolinja’s ship Jadran. I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the route, and what you can expect on board the boat.
The ship sails from Preko port and the route takes you across to Zadar main port just south of the city. It’s a distance of around 5 kilometres and takes around 25 minutes. This route is number 431 and operates up to 18 times a day in high season. You can buy a ticket from the Jadrolinja office beside the dock in Preko. Or using the Apple or Android app on your phone. Jadran is a roll on, roll off ferry and takes both foot passengers and vehicles. It was built in 2010 by the Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia and has a twin, called Biokovo built a year earlier in the same shipyard. They are both 87 meters long and can carry up to 1200 passengers and 138 cars, so there’s plenty of room. So, let’s get on board and I’ll show you around. Jadran’s main passenger deck is a large open plan air conditioned area which feels modern and clean. It has a small cafe serving drinks and snacks and there’s another smaller family area. Above is the sun deck that affords great views. Both decks have toilet facilities. Before you know it, Zadar port comes into view and we dock and unload quickly. Easy as that you’re across from Preko to Zadar. I hope you found this video interesting. I have another video about the ferry Lara between Preko and Zadar Old Town so check that out too.

The ancient town layout, narrow streets, and well-preserved buildings contribute to the town's charm.

Keep in mind that developments and changes might have occurred since my last knowledge update in September 2021, so I recommend checking with local sources or tourist information for the most current information about Nin.

Bishop Grgur Ninski statue, Nin, Croatia #touristattraction #touristplace #croatiatravel #wanderlust
Bishop Grgur Ninski, also known as Gregory of Nin, was a Croatian religious leader and a significant historical figure who lived during the 9th and 10th centuries. He is particularly known for his role in advocating for the use of the Croatian language in religious services and for his efforts to promote the autonomy of the Croatian Church from the influence of Rome.
Grgur Ninski was the bishop of Nin, a town in medieval Croatia. He gained prominence for his opposition to the centralized authority of the Pope and the Latin Church in Rome, advocating for the use of Old Church Slavonic, the language spoken by the common people, in religious services. At the time, Latin was the dominant language of religious ceremonies, and using Old Church Slavonic would have made religious texts more accessible to the local population.
One of the most well-known accomplishments associated with Grgur Ninski is his support for the Glagolitic script, an early Slavic alphabet created by Saints Cyril and Methodius for the purpose of translating religious texts into the vernacular languages of the Slavic peoples. Grgur Ninski's advocacy for the Glagolitic script and the use of Old Church Slavonic in worship was closely tied to his efforts to establish a distinct Croatian religious identity that was less dependent on the Latin Church in Rome.
Grgur Ninski is also known for his opposition to the centralized power of the Pope and his support for the autonomy of the Croatian Church. He resisted the attempts of the Latin Church to exert control over the ecclesiastical affairs of the region. His stance on these issues made him a symbol of Croatian national and cultural identity, as he championed the use of the Croatian language and the preservation of local traditions.
Today, Grgur Ninski is remembered as a national hero and cultural icon in Croatia. A statue of him, located in the city of Split, is a popular tourist attraction. The statue is known for its large toe, which is said to bring good luck when rubbed. Grgur Ninski's legacy continues to inspire discussions about language, culture, and autonomy in Croatia's history and contemporary society.
