Best Bear Caliber When Hiking, Backpacking and in the Wilderness!
When hiking and backpacking in bear country wilderness, usage of a firearm (Like Glock 20 10MM) is a must! Yes, bear spray is a must, along with a firearm, in my opinion. Bears, and even large animals like Moose, can pose a threat to you. While most encounters with bears, like brown and grizzly bears in Alaska, are nerve racking but not violent, depending on the situation, a very small amount can be. Everyone mentions the 44 Magnum as the end all be all caliber revolver for bears. But, the it's not realistic for everyone to use a 44 Magnum is a falsehood. Take your friends to the range and have everyone shoot a 44 Magnum bear load. You will see what I mean.
Moving down to the .357 Magnum, while much more controllable, you now have a capacity and weight problem. Only 6, 7 or 8 rounds available in .357 Magnum. Also, you cannot attach a light! In comes the 10MM. Similar ballistics to the .357 Magnum, but 16 rounds in the Glock 20! I have a Gen 5 Glock 20 I just purchased and found it much easier to control than even the .357 Magnum. Just the nature of a revolver, unable to get a super high grip, versus a semi-auto pistol where you can get a higher grip and control is better.
Do not think about 9mm in big bear and animal country. That is just a stupid argument. So for me Gen 5 Glock 20 with a Surefire X300 Ultra light checks all the boxes. Great ballistics, capacity, lighter weight, faster reloads and you have a light for dawn, dusk and night time problems! Loaded with Underwood 220gr Flat Nose Hard Cast Black Cherry ammo! Also as great hunting sidearm option.
Ammo Compared:
Underwood 9MM 147gr +P Flat Nose Hard Cast Black Cherry

The Only Glock Mod You MUST Do!
Glock makes a great pistol. But there is one modification with a Glock that must be done. Glocks need their iron sights changed out, because they are plastic and weak. Changing the Glock sight out for something like Heinie Straight Eight sight is a must do mod! Whether you have a Glock 19, Glock 20 or Glock 43x, you must change out your sights!

Use Same Holster for 9MM / 10MM / .357 MAG! (Wilderness Chest Rig Carry)
Using same holster for 9MM, 10MM and .357 MAG? Yes! In a chest rig, like Hill People Gear, you can use it without length changes, etc. and use the same holster. Using a Raven Vanguard 3 Surefire X300 holster, you can use both the Glock 20 Gen 5 (any Generation) and a Glock 19 for instance. Without changing the holster out! If you go different places, like we do between Pennsylvania and Alaska, and you use different calibers, like I do with 9MM and 10MM, this will work excellently!

"Kit Bags are our original and most popular item. Kit Bags were born out of the desire to discreetly carry a pistol in a way that doesn't interfere with a full size backpack. Kit Bags are so handy for keeping small items close at hand on the trail (or in the ATV, or in the canoe, or on the stand, etc.) that many folks choose to use them even without a pistol."

Outdoor Chest Rig Firearm Carry! (How I Do It)
Looking to carry a firearm (pistol) in a chest rig, like from Hill People Gear? If so, this is a beginners guide to carrying a gun in a chest rig! If you are carrying a revolver, just simple carry it in the pocket that makes the most sense. If carrying a semi-auto, like my Glock 19 9mm, than you need a holster. I am using a IWB holster tied to the MOLLE with paracord, with no slack. Then I changed the zipper pull to have a better purchase if needing to open the pocket. So when backpacking, hiking, hunting, trekking, etc. here are some ideas!

Winchester Model 50 Semi-Automatic Shotgun (Great, but Late to the Market!)
The Winchester Model 50 Semi-Automatic Shotgun was late to the party, dominated by the Browning Auto 5. Historic Winchester Model 50 Semi-Automatic Shotgun is very well made, using machined milled parts. Carbine Williams, of M1 Carbine fame, was the key inventor of the Vintage Winchester Model 50 Semi-Automatic Shotgun. Using a floating chamber, instead having the entire barrel/chamber move backwards to load/unloads shells like the Browning A5. Very interesting gun!
The Winchester Model 50 Semi-Automatic Shotgun was only around from 1954 until 1961, but during that time if had a 40% market share compared to the Browning Auto 5 shotgun. If this was release earlier, it would probably been neck and neck with the Browning A5, in my estimation. Winchester tried with their 1911 (Widowmaker) and Model 40 semi automatic shotguns, but they were dangerous and wonky given they had to work around Browning's patents. Until Browning's patent expired, the semi-auto shotgun market for every other company was pretty much non-existent. Which is why Remington, Savage and FN all used Browning's patents and created their own Auto5 shotguns.
The Model 50 was a semi-automatic shotgun using a short recoil action. Unlike most other short recoil designs, the barrel on the Model 50 is completely static. Instead, the weapon uses a floating breech system consisting of a chamber and forcing cone patented by David Marshall Williams; when the weapon fires, this breech moves back about 0.1 inches (0.25 centimetres), causing the bolt to move backwards. A return spring pushes the bolt back forwards. The Winchester Model 50 is a fabulous shotgun and Winchester's first successful auto loading shotgun.
Available in 12 gauge 2¾" Shells

Wear Insulation Layers in Your Sleeping Bag? (Should You?)
Should you wear insulation layers in your sleeping bag? Yes! If your sleeping bag can accommodate it. A lot of sleeping bags have enough room (girth) to allow to at least a small layer. Like a packable down/synthetic jacket or hoodie. But, some sleeping bags (like Mountain Hardwear Phantom) are cut very tight. Mainly to be lightweight and ultra lightweight (UL). Some sleeping bags have no room, some have a little room and some are cut generously, like Valandre. Valandre's Bloody Mary (5 degree bag) and their Shocking Blue (-4 degree bag) really allow for a thick insulation layer to be worn to extend the bag rating. The answer is check your bag before you buy. If you are a beginner backpacker, check out REI or some place and try them out!

Mountain Hardwear Bishop Pass Gore-Tex 0° Down Sleeping Bag (7° Test!)
Is Mountain Hardwear Bishop Pass Gore-Tex 0° Down Sleeping Bag the best down sleeping bag? I took it out in 7 degree temperatures with industry certified thermometers and tested it out! I would not recommend Mountain Hardwear Bishop Pass Gore-Tex 0° Down Sleeping Bag below 5 degrees after my usage and testing. It performed well at 7 degrees and I feel like it would handle nothing more than 5 degrees. The addition of the Gore-Tex Infinium (windstopper) fabric is a great advantage. The Mountain Hardwear Bishop Pass Gore-Tex 0° Down Sleeping Bag is a little constrictive, but it is not the worst.

How I Test Sleeping Bags! (Separate the Best from the Worst!)
I am always asked how I test sleeping bags to find the best and worst sleeping bags on the market. Testing sleeping bags involves many facets. Temperature inside the bag is the most interesting to people. But also, how does it feel, are their special features and does it keep you warm at the rating it has? Normally sleeping bags really do not keep you warm at the marketed/advertised rating. Doing this scientific testing separates the best from the worst sleeping bags!

How to Properly Store a Sleeping Bag (Compressed is The Best Way?)
How do you store sleeping bag correctly? It is easy. To properly store your sleeping bag, put it in the storage bag (not the compression bag) that comes with almost every sleeping bag. You could also hang up your sleeping bags. Those are the best ways to store them so they retain the majority of their fluff, which is what will keep you warm. A saggy compressed bag will not perform anywhere near its rating. DO NOT LEAVE THE BAG COMPRESSED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME, AND THEN PUT THEM IN YOUR BAG TO GO ON A TRIP! You will think it is the bags fault you are cold, but it would be your fault. Below are my tips!
If you leave it compressed for long periods of time, do this!
- Take the bag out and lay it flat to puff up for TWO WEEKS prior to your trip.
If you leave it in the storage bag that comes with the sleeping bag, do this!
- Take the bag out and lay it flat to puff up for TWO DAYS prior to your trip.
If you hang your sleeping bags up, do this!
- Nothing. Your bag is ready to roll when you are.

Eddie Bauer Igniter 20° Synthetic Bag (25° Test!)
The Eddie Bauer Igniter 20° Synthetic Bag was up and down. Mostly down. I had cold spots in the Eddie Bauer Igniter 20° Synthetic Bag even with leaving it out to fluff up for two weeks. While the spot the thermometer was in was rather warm, there were cold spots and the lack of a sufficient draft collar really hampered this bag. There is no thought that went into the draft collar in Eddie Bauer bags. No innovation in the last 6+ years. I have had this bag for 6+ years, it is still for sale and there are no new offerings from Eddie Bauer. I would not recommend the Eddie Bauer Igniter 20° Synthetic Bag bag below freezing (32°).
Air Temp: 25° Degrees
Starting Temp In Bag: 47° Degrees
5 Minute Bag Temp: 54° Degrees
10 Minute Bag Temp: 59° Degrees
20 Minute Bag Temp: 66° Degrees
30 Min Bag Temp: 70° Degrees
From Eddie Bauer:
"Built and tested by our guide team for three-season backpacking in temperate climates. Uncoated Pertex® ripstop nylon shell offers rugged durability while shaving ounces. Climashield® Apex continuous-filament insulation provides high-loft thermal efficiency even in damp conditions, without excessive weight or bulk. Mummy bag design with three-dimensional footbox for maximum comfort."

Eddie Bauer Kara Koram 20° Down Bag (25° Test!)
Is Eddie Bauer Kara Korum 20 Degree Sleeping Bag the best down sleeping bag? I took it out in 25 degree temperatures with Bluetooth thermometers and tested it out! I would not recommend Eddie Bauer Kara Korum 20 Degree Sleeping Bag below 25 degrees and recommend it around 30 degrees after my usage and testing. While Eddie Bauer Kara Korum 20 Degree Sleeping Bag is very comfortable, the chest baffle does not cinch, so you cannot customize it to get a tight seal. Here are the results!
Air Temp: 25° Degrees
Starting Temp In Bag: 43° Degrees
5 Minute Bag Temp: 47° Degrees
10 Minute Bag Temp: 53° Degrees
20 Minute Bag Temp: 60° Degrees
30 Min Bag Temp: 66° Degrees
From Eddie Bauer:
"All-weather sleeping bag features high-loft, 850 fill down for superior warmth to weight. Light, tough, abrasion-resistant 15-denier Pertex nylon shell with StormRepel DWR finish that sheds moisture. Interior pocket keeps GPS or other electronics safe from freezing temperatures."

Sleeping Bag Testing: 2023 Edition! (Down, Synthetic, Ultra Light, Backpacking)
When it comes to sleeping bags, which is the best? The best sleeping bag is the one that works for you. A sleeping bag can be warm, but uncomfortable. Sleeping bags can be very comfortable, but not warm! In this sleeping bag testing, we mainly are concerned with warmth. Comfort is very personal and each person will have to figure out that for themselves.
But warmth, that we can measure in a sleeping bag. So from ultra light weight (UL) to backpacking to wilderness travel, we will test out a good amount of sleeping bags. From Sierra Designs, Therm-a-Rest, Valandre, Eddie Bauer, Mountain Hardwear, Vaude, Kifaru and more.

Biggest Outdoor Industry Lies! (Beginner Camping & Backpackers Don't Be Duped!)
Outdoor companies lie about these two things! Tents and Sleeping Bags. Beginners, listen up! They really tell you the limit rating on the sleeping bag as their marketed temperature rating. DO NOT TRUST WHAT THE BAGS MARKETED RATING IS! Always add 10 degrees to the bag rating. So if it is a 20 degree bag, it will really be comfortable in 30 degree temperatures. The second biggest lie is tents. They market these tents as 2 person, 3 person, 4 person, 5 person, etc. If you want to feel like a sardine, believe them. If you want space and comfort, subtract one off what they say. So a 2 person tent is really for 1 person. This is the best advice I can give beginners. I have used MSR, Big Agnes, Nemo, Marmot, Kelty, Eureka and many other tents. I have used Eddie Bauer, Therm-a-Rest, Valandre, Sierra Designs, Mountain Hardwear, Vaude, Kifaru and many other sleeping bags. Have a great trip backpacking, camping or overlanding into the outdoors!

Use LastPass? Do This ASAP! (LastPass Hacked, You Are At Risk!)
LastPass was hacked! Worse than we thought. Are you at risk? What should you do? Do this now!
Hackers have all LastPass users Vaults (Stored Usernames/Passwords/Secure Notes)
They do not have anyones Master Password
Offline they can try to crack into these vaults. MFA used with LastPass is void, since they downloaded all the vaults and have them offline.
This is a short term concern for people with a weak password
This is a long term concern for people with a strong password
Recommendations:
Enable MFA where possible. Immediately for Banking.
When you are enabling MFA, change your password to something completely different.
Move to something different like Bitwarden.
Other data hackers have is sites you used, billing addresses, IP addresses used by you to login, email addresses in LastPass, etc. Expect very personal phishing emails luring you in to click links.

Smoke Wagon Small Batch Bourbon (No Bull$h!t Bourbon Review)
This Smoke Wagon Small Batch Bourbon is solid. While it does not knock my socks off, it certainly pulls them almost off! Smoke Wagon Small Batch Bourbon was a huge hit at our Christmas, Yule party this year. The most drank bourbon. It seemed to be the best. I think there are others like Elijah Craig, Knob Creek and Buffalo Trace that you can get for the money. Smoke Wagon Small Batch Bourbon is still worth a buy and a solid bourbon. The question is, is it bourbon night? For me that is Friday or Saturday. Thanks for watching!
From Smoke Wagon:
"Just released in fall of 2019, the goal was to create an affordable everyday bourbon that had that unique and unmistakable Smoke Wagon flavor, consisting of delicate sweet notes with a rye spice finish. Barrels with our same high rye mash bill were racked on the top two floors of the warehouse and never rotated. The higher the floor the hotter it gets in the summer causing more expansion and more movement into the wood. Because we don’t chill filter, these combined aspects create a bourbon that is rich and creamy beyond its years. Never rotating the barrels ensures there are no harsh tannin flavors and the high rye mash bill adds a delightfully spicy and nutty finish.
Nose: honey, toasted nuts and with some oak and heat.
Taste: Creamy mouthfeel with initial rich sweet notes of honey and caramel on the tip of the tongue followed by nuts, oak and pepper spice that starts on the sides of your tongue. The nuttiness and oak fade as pepper spice from the rye takes over the entirety of your pallet. Finishes with a creamy sweetness that coats followed by once again by oak and a pepper spice that lingers.

Distillery: MGP
Vol: 100 Proof

Smoke Wagon Uncut and Unfiltered Bourbon (No Bull$h!t Bourbon Review)
This Smoke Wagon Uncut and Unfiltered is unique! A bourbon gem, Smoke Wagon Uncut and Unfiltered provides a nice roller coaster ride of flavors and proof, when you get off you want to ride Smoke Wagon Uncut and Unfiltered again! Haha. A rare tongue twisting straight bourbon whiskey, Smoke Wagon Uncut and Unfiltered comes out of Las Vegas. Worth the buy! The question is, is it bourbon night? For me that is Friday or Saturday. Thanks for watching!
From Smoke Wagon:
"Blending vintages of our high rye mash bill to achieve this flavor profile at 115-116 plus proof was a very rewarding challenge for us. There is a delicate balance between creamy mouthfeel, tannins and sugars that comes into play that makes the end result magical. Older vintages have more evaporation which means a higher concentration of fats and sugars per ounce which gives them a nice creamy mouthfeel as well as caramel and honey goodness. They also have more tannins because alcohol has been in contact with the wood for longer. A lot of what some perceive as alcohol burn is actually a harshness due to tannins. This can counterbalance the benefit gained by the high concentration of lipid esters insulating your pallet from alcohol heat. There needs to be enough of the older bourbon for the oak flavors and mouthfeel, but also some younger ones to cut back on the tannins and bring in some delicate fruit and caramel flavors.

Eberlestock F7 Kite/F1 Mainframe Combo Performance (Did It Work For Me?)
While in theory I liked my Eberlestock setup. The Eberlestock F7 Kite & F1 Mainframe combo did not pan out in practice. Using the Eberlestock F7 Kite & F1 Mainframe proved to be a pain, as you have to unhook the straps to open the F7 Kite front pouch. Then the pouch would just fall off the F1 Mainframe. Then you would have to line the Eberlestock F7 Kite & F1 Mainframe back up, strap it down, etc. It was very clunky using them together.
With all that said, the comfort of the shoulder and waist belt of these were awesome. I had no issues hiking, etc. I packed the F7 Kite to the brim and was at one point worried the zipper might pop. But these seem constructed well and I did not have any issues. It was just using the Eberlestock F7 Kite & F1 Mainframe in conjunction is not something I would recommend.

Old Elk Sour Mash Reserve Bourbon (No Bull$h!t Bourbon Review)
This Old Elk Sour Mash Reserve Bourbon is one on my favorites. Old Elk Sour Mash Reserve Bourbon starts hot and end sweet. Old Elk Sour Mash Reserve Bourbon provides a great journey with a solid body and complexity. This is expensive, so there is low value. But Old Elk Sour Mash Reserve Bourbon is worth a try if you come across it! The question is, is it bourbon night? For me that is Friday or Saturday. Thanks for watching!
From Old Elk:
"Old Elk is heading into 2021 with the recent launch of its limited release, small-batch Sour Mash Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
The Old Elk’s Sour Mash Reserve is a throwback to the brand’s start-up roots, the distillers said. The founders a number of years back reached out to industry veteran Greg Metze, who is now their master distiller, to create a custom mash bill to craft a smooth, innovative whiskey. The result? A unique, high-malted barley content bourbon of 51% corn, 34% malted barley and 15% rye.
“As distillers, we know the magic is in the fermentation. The beauty of this expression is the contrast in the flavor profile resulting from a change in yeast strain as well as the geographic location of the distillery. It is not well known, but it’s virtually impossible to replicate fermentation from one geographic location to another due to indigenous flora and fauna,” says Kate Douglas, Head Distiller at Old Elk Distillery. “Our distillers worked together to create a small-batch product extension that upholds the same standard our other award-winning whiskeys achieved. We promise the Old Elk herd that this product is an extension of our innovative whiskeys with all the world-class quality aspects.”
The Sour Mash Reserve is the latest in the lineup of whiskeys from Old Elk.
“When we first decided to create Old Elk with our signature custom high-malt mash bill, we wanted to do something special, and as Kate says, ‘The magic is in the fermentation.’ We’re constantly exploring new expressions and knew that this is something extraordinary that will cause a stir among the whiskey community, especially those looking for variations in a small batch product. Each batch release contains only thirty barrels at a time, and the taste profile will vary slightly from batch to batch, making it exciting to search for each new release,” Old Elk’s CEO, Luis Gonzalez, added.
The sour mash technique promotes what’s described as ideal conditions for yeast to produce the best flavor. It is a lot-oriented expression using the familiar technique of sour mash. The first batch was distilled in New York with a proprietary yeast blend"
