Hi, I am Mary Duffy, editor of Bartleby, the Scrivener, a short story written by Herman Melville in the mid-19th century that has endured the test of time and remains relevant today. It tells the story of a Wall Street lawyer who hires a new scrivener. Overall, Bartleby, the Scrivener is a thought-provoking and timeless work that challenges readers to consider their own values and the society in which they live.

Ancient Classical Greece3
Professors often write about Athens being the cradle of justice and democracy, about its embellishment, the magnificent temples, public buildings, exquisite pottery, and the drama, literature, rhetoric, and philosophy that flourished in Classical Greece. But rare are the commentaries on the spirit of the Golden Greeks. In his funeral oration, Pericles says:
“I wish to speak about the spirit in which we, Greeks, faced battles, our constitution and manners with which we rose to greatness.”
Professor Guerrero’s book has no footnotes, indexes, or scholarly jargon. It is for the soul-searching, self-taught, self-made individuals who crave to educate themselves.

Ancient Classical Greece Textbook
Scholars often write about Athens being the cradle of justice and democracy, about its embellishment, the magnificent temples, public buildings, sculptures, exquisite pottery, and above all the drama, literature, rhetoric, and philosophy that flourished in Classical Greece; but scarce are the commentaries on the soul of the Golden Greeks. In his funeral oration, Pericles says:
“I wish rather to speak about the spirit in which we faced battles, and the constitution and manners with which we rose to greatness.”

Birth of Tragedy
This affirmation of the vital provided him with a standard he applied to the history of culture, criteria used in his book The Birth of Tragedy, where two tendencies were dominant — two gods: Dionysus and Apollo — within Greek culture. Being a scholar of classical studies, Nietzsche was a professor of philology at the University of Basel, at age 24.
In the Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche dramatizes the Dionysian, dynamic, creative, ecstatic, and frenzied impulse, contrasting it to the Apollonian reason, which embodied order, discipline, and art.

To the Lighthouse
To the Lighthouse, written by British writer Virginia Woolf (1882 – 1941) came out in 1927. It was one of the first modernist novels. Woolf is known for trying out different ways to tell a story, and To the Lighthouse is no different.
Using stream-of-consciousness writing, the book takes the reader on a trip into the minds of the characters and shows what they are thinking and feeling.

Francis Bacon’s Essays started writing his essay in early 16th century and published them in 1625.
Bacon's essays are still popular today because they provide insightful and practical advice on a wide range of topics, from friendship and love to business and politics. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
Although there are no clear bad guys in the book, Charles Tansley, who is rude and insensitive, may be seen as less likeable than other characters. In the end, the book is more of a study of human nature and the complicated nature of human relationships than a traditional story about good guys and bad guys.
I recommend professor Guerrero’s large print edition because it is easier to read large chunks without the eyes getting tire. Get the book at Barnes and Noble.
