The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has assured Nigerians that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be used in the governorship and state legislature elections scheduled for Saturday, March 11.
Yakubu gave the assurance in an ongoing meeting with all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Saturday, March 4.
According to him, the BVAS machines will be used for the elections, though the devices are being worked on to avoid a repeat of the glitches recorded with the last Saturday’s elections. The agenda of the meeting was not disclosed to the media, however, journalists were invited to cover the opening.
This meeting is holding exactly one week after the presidential and National Assembly elections, and one week to the governorship and state assembly elections.
In his welcome remarks, the INEC Chairman noted that the meeting is to review performances at the last week’s elections, adding that there are lessons to be learned especially as it relates to logistics management. Mahmood appealed to the RECs to work harder to ensure that the governorship elections do not experience the same glitches recorded with the last elections while calling for disciplining of staff who err.

Her mum, Blessing Adeniran, in a post shared on her Instastories on Friday, March 3, alleged that authorities of Chrisland school called the police and have asked for a fresh autopsy. This would mean the body of late Whitney that was laid to rest on Thursday, March 2, will be exhumed.

‘’The Lagos State Ministry of Justice is aware of the current ongoing dialogue about the alleged plans to exhume the body of the late Whitney Omodesola Adeniran, a student of Chrisland Schools whose death as revealed by the autopsy, conducted by Lagos State University Teaching Hospital was as a result of asphyxia and electrocution.

The haters have won' - US actor Isaiah Washington announces early retirement from acting
The haters have won' - US actor Isaiah Washington announces early retirement from acting in lengthy Twitter rant.
Isaiah Washington has announced his retirement from acting at the age of 59, blaming the 'haters' for the shocking decision.
The Grey's Anatomy alum, 59, took to Twitter this week to share a lengthy statement announcing his early retirement and letting fans know that his film Corsicana may be his final acting project.
'It is with a heavy heart and a sense of relief that I am announcing my early retirement from the entertainment industry today,' the actor - who was fired from Grey's Anatomy in 2007 after allegedly using a gay slur against costar T.R. Knight - wrote.
'Those who have been Following/Witnessing my journey here on Twa***r since 2011 all know that I have fought the good fight, but it seems that the haters, provocateurs and the Useful Idiots have won.'
The Texas-born star also shared his post-retirement plans: 'I'm no longer interested in the back and forth regarding a "color construct" that keeps us human beings divided nor am I interested in politics or anything vitriolic. I will be traveling this great country before it falls into Socialism and then Communism.'
'Until then, know that this Frederick Douglass Conservative will keep his powder dry and loves you all!'
Washington went on to add: 'I am truly grateful for your support over the years. It looks like CORSICANA #CorsicanaMovie may be the last time you see me as an Actor born here in America.'
'Just know that I will be posting a few pictures of my retirement shenanigans here and there, but until then. Be safe out there. Your loved ones love you and need you. SALUTE!'
Washington rose to fame playing the highly skilled cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Preston Burke on Grey's Anatomy.
He was fired in 2007 following three seasons, after being accused of using a homophobic slur in reference to co-star T. R. Knight - who later came out as gay - while arguing with co-star Patrick Dempsey on set.
He later denied using the term as a slur, and claimed he instead told Patrick to stop treating him like an 'F-word', which he said meant 'somebody who is being weak and afraid to fight back.'

Belarusian court sentences Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski to 10 years in prison
Belarusian court sentences Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski to 10 years in prison.
Belarusian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski was sentenced by a court in Minsk on Friday, March 3 to 10 years in a maximum-security prison, Russia state news agency TASS reports.
He was found guilty on the charge of smuggling, according to TASS.
Germany called the 10-year prison term an attack by the Minsk government on civil society.
On Twitter, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock slammed the charges and trial against Bialiatski and co-defendants Valentin Stefanovich and Vladimir Labkovich as a ”farce” adding they were being judged ”simply because of their years-long fight for the rights, dignity and freedom of people in Belarus.”
”The Minsk regime is fighting civil society with violence and imprisonment,” Baerbock said, adding ”this is as much a daily disgrace as Lukashenko’s support for Putin’s war (in Ukraine).”
Baerbock urged Belarus to end political persecution and demanded the release of all of the more than 1,400 political prisoners.
Also, exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya slammed the sentencing of Bialiatski and other activists in the same trial as “appalling.”
“We must do everything to fight against this shameful injustice & free them,” she wrote on Twitter.
Bialiatski, a pro-democracy activist, has documented human rights abuses in Belarus since the 1980s. He founded the organization Viasna in 1996 after a referendum that consolidated the authoritarian powers of president and close Russian ally, President Alexander Lukashenko.
He was arrested in 2020 amid widespread protests against Lukashenko’s regime.
Bialiatski won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2022 alongside human rights groups from Russia and Ukraine.
The new laureates were honored for “an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human right abuses and the abuse of power” in their respective countries. “They have for many years promoted the right to criticize power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said at the time.

United representatives have met with Mason Greenwood as part of the internal investigation
Manchester United representatives have met with Mason Greenwood as part of the internal investigation.
Mason Greenwood's future at Manchester United remains in the balance. Club investigation could lead to contract termination, but reintegration not ruled out. The club sent security personnel to player's bail hearing in October.
Should Greenwood stay, United are likely to go through a step-by-step process which would include encouraging him to go to therapy and it has also been suggested this could include a TV interview.
The final decision will be made by Joel Glazer and Richard Arnold, as long as United remain under the control of the Glazer family. Erik ten Hag had at least one conversation with Mason Greenwood and his opinion will be taken into consideration. [Laurie Whitwell and Adam Crafton, The Athletic UK]

Cristiano Ronaldo denies the claim by married Venezuelan influencer that she had sex with him
Cristiano Ronaldo denies 'completely false' claim by married Venezuelan influencer that she had sex with him.
Cristiano Ronaldo has denied the claim by a married Venezuelan influencer that they both had sex last year, describing it as ‘’completely false.''
The blogger, identified only as Georgilaya, claims Ronaldo cheated on his long-term girlfriend Georgina Rodríguez, who he has two children with, in a hotel room in Portugal on March 25 last year.
Georgilaya claimed Ronaldo sent her a text and invited her to his hotel room after she posed for selfies with Ronaldo and his Portuguese teammates, reports The Sun.
She said: 'When I read the message, I thought that if I went there we would just talk, get to know each other better, maybe I could get some more photos. I didn't think that, in that situation, there would be sex. The fact is, it happened.'
'It was consented on my part, but despite that, I felt manipulated, by the fame and power of Cristiano Ronaldo.'
Ronaldo's spokesperson said the claims were 'false and defamatory'.
Georgilaya claims she slept with Ronaldo at the Solverde hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, northern Portugal, while the Portugal captain was training with his teammates for the Qatar World Cup.
She claims Ronaldo, who has been with his model girlfriend Rodriguez for nearly six years, invited her up to room 312 where they had consensual sex. But Georgilaya said she felt 'used' afterwards. Ronaldo has denied these claims.
On her Instagram account, Georgilaya has saved a series of photos of herself with Ronaldo under a folder called: 'Christiano Ronaldo'. Ronaldo was pictured with his arm around a smiling Georgilaya in two photographs.
Georgilaya also posted pictures of herself wearing a Manchester United shirt with Ronaldo's name on it as she watched the footballer play in the Portugal v Macedonia World Cup Qualifier match. In every photograph, she tagged Ronaldo.
After making the allegations, Georgilaya denied she has made the claim to get more followers on Instagram.
'I have made it clear, I'm not crazy, nor hungry [for fame]. I already had followers. Be careful with that. I already had followers,' she said on her Instagram story.
Georgilaya complained that social media users had been commenting on her Instagram posts, which feature her wearing lacy underwear, with derogatory statements.
And not any less important, I am not less of a woman than anybody for appearing with few clothes in the photo, to start,' she said. 'Many Portuguese have offended me and written horrible comments on my photos.'
Ronaldo has previously been accused of raping US citizen Kathryn Mayorga in a hotel room in 2009 and then paying her $375,000 in hush money.
The case was thrown out in June last year by US Judge Jennifer Dorsey who said that Mayorga's lawyer had shown 'bad faith' and relied on leaked documents.
Ronaldo, now on a $205 million-a-year deal with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, has always denied raping Mayorga, 40, in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009 and insisted they had consensual sex. Police have never brought any charges.
Judge Dorsey said that dismissing a case outright with no option to file it again is a severe sanction, but that Ronaldo had been harmed by the conduct of the woman’s lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday, convicted and sentenced a former Accountant in the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, Mr Garba Abdullahi Tahir, to 21 years in prison for stealing pension funds totalling about ₦26.1 million.
Tahir was the pension accountant when Mr Stephen Oronsaye was the HoS between 2009 and 2010. Trial Justice Inyang Ekwo found the defendant who was formerly in charge of pension accounts, guilty of a seven-count charge the EFCC preferred against him. The court said it was satisfied that the anti-graft agency proved its case against the defendant, beyond a reasonable doubt.
Consequently, it sentenced the defendant to three years imprisonment on each of the seven counts. Justice Ekwo held that the sentence would run concurrently, starting from April 3.
