It is a game changer!

Have you been part of the online buzz recently? The chatter has been a swirling storm around Martha Stewart, the home décor queen and kitchen whiz. She stepped onto the glossy cover of Sports Illustrated at the ripe age of 81, leaving our midlife community spinning in a frenzy of opinions. Holly and I, with our teacups steaming, decided to jump right into the middle of the debate on our most recent Facebook LIVE. I'll admit, at first, I wasn't on board with it with Si’s choice. It seemed a tad uncool. However, after a little introspection and a hearty dialogue, I found myself changing camps (but not the one that you thought!). Our discussion was peppered with our experiences, views, and quite a few chuckles. We dissected this hot topic, where Holly admitted that Martha Stewart was never her cup of tea because she's a little too upper-crust for her liking. Holly was quick to clarify, that she has no love for the stove, and interior décor wasn't her forte. So, maybe it was just a matter of not vibing with her brand. On a more serious note, though, we acknowledged that Martha's perseverance is indeed commendable. She's weathered her share of storms, from tax evasion to a complete image makeover, and still managed to reclaim her throne. That, ladies, deserves a round of applause. However, we couldn't help but feel that her SI cover paints an unrealistic expectation of an 81-year-old woman, sending mixed messages about body image and age representation. We dove headfirst into discussing the pros and cons. On the bright side, having an 81-year-old woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated is indeed a step forward. However, the exclusivity of such representation screams privilege and fails to reflect the average aging process of women today. I agreed with everything that Holly said and added an unexpected twist to our discussion. I raised the question – what did we really expect from a platform that has long painted an unrealistic image of women? Maybe SI isn't the one to blame for our disappointment. Perhaps, we've set the bar too high for them and expected a significant leap from a brand that has consistently maintained a specific image narrative. While we passionately agreed about the need for narrative change, we realized that change has to begin with us. We ought to be the ones defying norms and celebrating our bodies as they are, jiggly bits and all! There's nothing more liberating than accepting our bodies and embracing the changes that come with age. Then, we took a stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about shows like 'The Golden Girls' and 'Sex in the City,' and how they've portrayed midlife women. It was interesting to observe how the portrayal has evolved, yet some disparities remain. So here's the crux of our chit-chat: changing the narrative is no one's job but ours. We shouldn't wait for brands to represent us, rather we should take the reins and showcase our own powerful, beautiful and authentic images. Aging is a natural process, and each wrinkle and each laugh line is a badge of honour that we should wear with pride. Let's redefine the beauty norms, one powerful midlife woman at a time! I don’t know why, but it always surprises me when a woman shares that she feels that she’s a fraud and isn’t qualified to be doing what she’s doing. As I progress into my midlife years, I’ve come to its more than a list of symptoms to be cured or endured, it’s a transformation. There is beautiful wisdom honed by midlife women, this wisdom can bring clarity, joy and purpose. Getting to that point of understanding can be a journey in itself, a journey that I’ve been navigating for a couple of years now. It hasn’t been easy because our modern way of living has created a divide between our physical and spiritual selves. This is our opportunity to open the conversation and bring midlife women into this circle of wisdom so that together we can create a clearer path for ourselves and for those yet to enter their midlife years.
