Prehensile tails are over rated!
Aztec and Chica showing us why prehensile tails are over rated! 🐒
Unlike mant other primates, a Bolivian Squirrel Monkey's tail is not prehensile, which means they can't use it to grip.
But these clever cookies show how their tail is still put to good use for balance and of course as a way to reach the mealworm snacks!
Thanks to keeper Rachael for sharing this great video! 🐾

Squid's first swim!
Squid makes a splash! 🐧
Two-month-old Little Penguin chick, Squid, is now out and about at Penguin Beach.
While a little clumsy at first, the plucky penguin was off and racing as soon as she hit the water and loved zipping around the pool while keepers watched on.
Thanks to keeper Amelia for these cute videos!
You can meet our feathery friends, learn more about their species' conservation and help feed the colony their fishy lunch during our Penguins in Person experience. 🐧🐾

Komodo Dragon is reclassified to endangered
Have you heard the news? Sadly, just a few weeks ago, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN) reclassified the Komodo Dragon’s conservation status from vulnerable to endangered. Why? Rising global temperatures and subsequent sea levels... 🦎🌦
As climate change impacts the world, it’s predicted we’ll see the dragons’ habitat reduced by 30% within the next 45 years. As well as rising sea levels, forest burning and deforestation are also contributing to their habitat loss and making the Komodo Dragon all the more vulnerable to poachers.
The arrival of Cecilia from Prague Zoo in 2020 heralded the start of Zoos SA plans to breed Komodo Dragons and combat their demise. 🌳
As well as our own efforts, Zoos SA supports the Komodo Survival Program. The Indonesian-based program aims to recover the management and conservation of the dragons in the wild.🌳
Komodo Dragons are found in Indonesia and live in forests and savannah habitats. With a life span of up to 30 years, the Komodo Dragon is the largest and heaviest lizard in the world and one of the few to have a venomous bite.🐾
Not exactly a fussy eater, the carnivorous lizard eats an array of food like deer, pigs, water buffalo, and anything else they can sink their teeth into. When hunting, their green textured skin provides an effective camouflage, and their quick claws and sharp teeth are used to kill their prey.🐾
By purchasing tickets to Adelaide Zoo to see Cecilia (shown in this video) you are supporting our conservation efforts and partnerships with conservation groups like the Komodo Survival Program. Together we can make a difference - thanks for your support.🦎

Eagle A cracking performance from Buzz!
Buzz you're a cracker! 🤩
Buzz, Adelaide Zoo's Black-breasted Buzzard, is one of the stars of our daily Free Flight show. 🦅
Her species is known for their egg-cracking ability and in the wild they will carry small eggs to a hard surface and drop them to access the tasty insides or find a rock to crack open a larger egg.
Keeper Michelle filmed this amazing video of Buzz having a 'crack' at opening a plaster-cast emu egg - how clever is she!
Watch this space we hope to feature this amazing behaviour as part of the show soon. 🐾

Ravi the Red Panda snacks on bamboo
Nom, nom, nom! 😋
It's Ravi the Red Panda having a munch on his lunch - bamboo! 🌿
Although orginally a carnivore the Red Panda's diet has adapted to a mostly vegetarian one which consists of bamboo (found in the Red Panda's natural habitat of China, Nepa and Bhutan).
Red Pandas also enjoy fruits, bird eggs and insects.
Stop by Adelaide Zoo and find out more about Ravi and Mishry and work that is being done to conserve their species. 🙌
Thanks to keeper Jemma for this tasty video.🐾

Lunch time in the aviary! 🐦
Who doesn't get a bit rowdy around the dinner table? 🐦😂
Keeper Amelia shared this cute video of the Dusky Lorys enjoying their lunch.
This colourful species is found in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and have specalised tongues for feeding on nectar. This helps them scrape fruit from the inside of their bill and remove the sweet juices! 🍎🍇🍌

Teddy Bear's Picnic
Every bear that ever there was gathered at Adelaide Zoo today to celebrate two very special black and white birthdays! 🐼🐼
Visitors, keepers and volunteers came together to wish Giant Pandas Fu Ni and Wang Wang a Happy Birthday and enjoy their annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic. 🐾
The pandas were treated to outer space-themed fun with panda-naut, rocket and alien-shaped enrichment created by the talented BEEZA team and filled with scented sawdust to roll around in and delicious panda cake. 🎂
After a special keeper talk and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday sung to the pandas, guests set up picnics in the sunshine around the zoo gardens. ☀️🌿

Penguin chick check up! 🐧
Here's a little fluffy Friday feel good for you! 🐧😍
Little Penguin chicks, five-week-old Kipper and seven-week-old Fry, waddled their way to the Animal Health Department to have a check-up this week.
Both in good health and were microchipped, weighed and had a blood sample taken for DNA testing to determine their sex.
These little ones are particulary special becuase Kipper is the chick of 21-year-old Gordon, the oldest Little Penguin in captivity in Australia, and Fry is the chick Sticky Beak, who was rescued from the wild and brings valuable new genetics to the colony.
The pair will now live together in the nursery until they lose the last of their down before joining the colony on Penguin Beach in the old Children’s Zoo. Thanks to keeper Amelia for the cute footage. 🐾
