I ran into Brent who owns Glencree a few years aga, and he invited me onto the property to check it out, 3 years later and we are back to harvest a young fallow to put some meat in the freezers of some of the single parent families I know on the West Coast. We also head down to Fiordland to chase some Bluefin Tuna and get Quentin and Time and Charlie thier first Tuna. Our persistence paid off and we managed to nail a few. We load the bikes on the back, head to south central and go for a mission. Tim lends me a 2 stroke KTM 250 to take for a blat and Im hooked. We head into the hills for a hunt and get a flat battery up a river, Charlie heads off on his KX85 to save the day and rustles up a fisherman to come help us out. We cook a few mean feeds on the open fire, see a wallaby and nail a deer

The end of 2022 Bring on 2023... Fanging down the West Coast of New Zealands South Island on the KTM 950 Supermotard This year will go down as the worst year in many peoples lives, including mine. Bit of another bitzer. We finally nail a bluefin Tuna after a lot of time and effort put into it. A coupkle of deer hit the deck after a visit to the DOC land next to Waipuna Station ( some massive stags around there, very good genetics ) some bastard pinches my deep cell battery, the box and the DC DC charger, a spot of jetboating and some campfire cooking. We have The Roaring Billy Block in Haast booked in for the first period of the roar, a couple of Tahr hunting trips on the cards, Kaikoura this week to see if the stags are roaring yet and a a heap of other bits and pieces in between. What an exciting time of year. Roaring Stags, Big Game fishing, Tahr and Ducks.....

Missions, been chainsawing logs and splitting and stacking wood and tidying round the yard and building woodsheds and a heap of other bits and pieces, put the camera down for a while so I could get stuff done. Another bitzer... its been 3 months since I chose happy, fake it till i make it, convince my subconcious that every little thing, is going to be alright.... and its working. Slowly but surely. I hope that everyone reading this is making progress with your own battles, because we are all eating a shit sandwich of some sort, there are just varying degrees of sandwich size and different amounts of shit in that sandwich. Some of us have our own shit, some have other peoples shit, there are probably some who have a range of different shit. Cause sometimes shit just happens. Its how we choose to deal with the shit that matters. If you have to eat the shit sandwhich for whatever reason, just take one bite at a time and continually remind yourself that the sandwich is actually not that big or that bad. And that once you have finished it, you can choose what to have for your next meal. So start figuring out what ingredients you need, write the recipe down, and give yourself a timeframe. We feed the Eels in the creek out the back of the homestead, the bigger ones could be over 50 years old, they can grow to over 100 years before migrating out to sea to spawn, not a lot is known about New Zealand Eels spawning habits or where they go to spawn, its suspected that the location is somewhere off the coast of Tonga, it was previously thought they spawned somewhere off Mexico. What is known is that they need a great depth to spawn. The Elvers or baby eels swim all the way back to New Zealand and are translucent when making this journey. Whitebaiters will occasionally catch these glass Eels in their nets. When they hit the fresh water they turn grey then black as they head upstream to find a habitat to live in. They can be seen navigating waterfalls by wriggling up the sides on the wet rocks, moss and grass. Bootlaces are a common term to describe them when they undertake this particular part of their journey. If you catch a big Eel its a good idea to release these ones back into the river as they are needed to breed and keep this valuable resource available to future generations. Eels are a fantastic survival food in the bush, most rivers and creeks hold Eels and they can be caught in a variety of ways, using flax and worms, or Huhu grubs, or if its flooding they can often be found up in the grass searching for worms and can be flicked up onto the bank by hand.
