Take a siteseeing tour to Lake Natron, Tanzania
Lake Natron is a salt lake located in northern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. It is part of the East African Rift System and lies at the foot of an active volcano, Mt Ol Doinyo Lengai. The lake is known for its striking red color, which is caused by algae and bacteria that thrive in the highly alkaline water. The lake is also home to millions of lesser flamingoes, who feed on the algae and use the lake as their main breeding ground. However, the lake is very inhospitable to most other animals, and can even turn them into stone-like statues if they die in or near the water.

If you want to visit Lake Natron, you can take a sightseeing tour from Arusha, which is about 100 km away. You can also combine your visit with a safari in Serengeti National Park or Ngorongoro Crater, which are nearby. You can expect to see stunning landscapes, flamingoes, camels, and Maasai villages along the way. You can also hike to the crater of Mt Ol Doinyo Lengai, which is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This type of lava is black during the day and red at night, and it flows faster and cooler than other lavas. However, hiking to the crater is very challenging and requires a good level of fitness and a local guide. See the worlds largest salt flat at the Salar De Uyuni, Bolivia
Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, located in Bolivia. It is a popular destination for travelers who want to see the stunning scenery and reflections of the sky on the salt crust. According to National Geographic¹, the best time to visit is during the rainy season (December to April), when the salt flat becomes a giant mirror. However, too much rain can also cancel tours, so it's advisable to check the weather before booking. You can also visit during the dry season (May to November), when the temperature is colder and the salt forms polygonal patterns on the ground.

Richelieu Rock was discovered by the French scuba diving explorer Jacques Cousteau, who named it after the purple soft corals that reminded him of a cardinal robe, Cardinal Richelieu⁴¹. Another theory says that it was named after a French nautical chart surveyor who worked to protect this underwater jewel from being blown up as an obstacle to shipping³.
The dive site can be reached by day trips from Khao Lak or by liveaboards from Phuket or Khao Lak²¹⁴. The dive conditions vary depending on the season and the currents, but it is suitable for divers with some experience and a minimum level of PADI Open Water Diver with at least 8 dives²¹. The depth ranges from 12 meters on the inside to 35 meters on the outside². The water temperature is usually around 28°C.
Richelieu Rock offers a great variety of life to be discovered, from small critters such as seahorses, ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp or frogfish, to large pelagic fish such as trevally, barracuda, snappers or fusiliers²¹. The rare tomato clownfish lives here and mating octopus are often spotted². The highlight of diving at Richelieu Rock is the chance to see the giants of the ocean – whale sharks and manta rays – that are attracted by the plankton-rich waters²¹.
