Is This 100-Year-Old Coal Camp Hell? Derby, Virginia is an old coal camp in Wise County that celebrates its 100 year anniversary in 2023. Derby is one of the more unique coal towns you will encounter with many of its homes built of a similar red block construction. Fleming-Neon, Kentucky: Hard Times For A Historic Coal Town Fleming-Neon is a big part of the coal history of Letcher County, Kentucky. The town once hosted a hearing conducted by Robert F. Kennedy inside the high school gym in 1968. Flooding has long been a problem for the town and 2022 saw another devastating flood hit the area. With an already dropping population, there's an uncertain future for this historic town as it attempts to rebuild. The Blackwell Chapel Store in Meadowview, Virginia, first opened in 1908 but had sat vacant and empty since 1988, until family members purchased the property and lovingly restored it to its former glory.
