The Redwood Valley Railway is a 15 in (381 mm) gauge miniature railway in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, California.
It was established in 1952 by Erich Thomsen as the Tilden South Gate and Pacific Railway, on a 12 in (305 mm) gauge, and has since expanded to 1+1⁄4 miles (2 km) of track and carries over 160,000 passengers a year. Thomsen worked in the engineering department for the Western Pacific Railroad and received at least three patents for his work The railway occupies land near the base of Vollmer Peak that was previously used as an anti-aircraft gun emplacement.
800 now-mature redwood trees were planted when the railroad was initially laid out. In 1968, the railroad was re-gauged to 15 in (381 mm) in. The new 15" gauge, 5" scale equipment allowed two adults to ride side by side and is representative of American narrow gauge railroads. Two of Redwood Valley's locomotives have made trips to England, run on several English 15 in gauge railways, including the Ravenglass and Eskdale.[9][10] After Thomsen died in 1995, his daughter Ellen assumed operations of the Redwood Valley Railway
Schedule
The Redwood Valley Railway operates Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm year-round (11am to sundown in winter - weather permitting). During the summer (from mid June to Labor Day) the railway operates 7 days a week from 11 am to 5 pm weekdays and 11 am to 6 pm weekends.
Special events
The first full weekend in June is the Anniversary Meet, which is open to the public from 11am to 6pm. Most of the RVRy's locomotives are under steam, and often visiting locomotives and rolling stock appear for the occasion.
RVRy celebrates "Winterfest", usually during the first and second weekends of December. During this time, the railway opens at its normal hours but closes after dark at 7pm. Guests experience the magic of the winter forest after dark complete with Father Solstice on his own train, illuminated themed areas of the railroad pertaining to the stages of water and a warm, holiday atmosphere. Ticket prices are the same as normal operating days.
Rolling stock
Locomotives
The railroad has four 15-inch scale steam locomotives, designed by Erich Thomsen and built on location by the railroad's Redwood Valley Shops. Each is designed for service on the RVRy and while they are not based on any full-size prototypes, they share many details with engines built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works built between 1875 and 1910[2][10] In addition, RVRy owns a single diesel-hydraulic locomotive, number 2, which only is used for maintenance-of-way.
The Redwood Valley Railway maintains a dozen or so wooden gondolas, built similar to those found on 36" narrow-gauge lines in the American West.[18] The gondolas, equipped with seating for up to eight adults, are the mainstay passenger rolling stock for this operation. The RVRy also owns three stock cars which have been specifically built to carry passengers as well. These are often favorites with small children, although a full-sized adult can comfortably fit inside.
The RVRy owns numerous four-wheel maintenance-of-way cars known as "jimmies", which have specialized uses such as welding, tie replacement, or carrying ballast.
The RVRy also rosters a single flatcar, built as a high school shop project by one of the crew in the 1970s. This rugged flatcar has seen thousands of uses, and is one of the most versatile cars on the railroad.
Unique among the roster of cars is a coal gondola, once used to carry extra coal for number 4. Coal was used up until the mid-1970s when number 4 was converted to fuel oil. The coal gondola, with its higher sides, is infrequently used. It currently carries a few dozen metal folding chairs for the annual meet.
RVRy caboose
A favorite with both young and old is the caboose. Based on a D&RGW 36" gauge prototype, this "short" center cupola caboose has graced the end of most revenue trains for over 30 years.
Future projects
Parts for a 2-4-4 Forney and a 2-6-0 exist, but currently remain unassembled. Plans for a second caboose and a lavish, scale (down to the furniture, wallpaper, and bar with tiny glasses) business car are in the works.
As of mid-2010 the boiler for number 13, the aforementioned 2-6-0 has been manufactured. Not to be confused with a visiting GSP&P 13 from the Glenwood Southpark and Pacific.

Yosemite National Park (/joʊˈsɛmɪti/ yoh-SEM-ih-tee)[5] is an American national park in the state of California,[6][7] surrounded on the southeast by Sierra National Forest and on the northwest by Stanislaus National Forest. The park is managed by the National Park Service and covers an area of 759,620 acres (1,187 sq mi; 3,074 km2)[3] in four counties – centered in Tuolumne and Mariposa, extending north and east to Mono and south to Madera County. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, lakes, mountains, meadows, glaciers, and biological diversity.[8] Almost 95 percent of the park is designated wilderness.[9] Yosemite is one of the largest and least fragmented habitat blocks in the Sierra Nevada, and the park supports a diversity of plants and animals.
The geology of the Yosemite area is characterized by granite rocks and remnants of older rock. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and tilted to form its unique slopes, which increased the steepness of stream and river beds, resulting in the formation of deep, narrow canyons. About one million years ago glaciers formed at higher elevations which eventually melted and moved downslope, cutting and sculpting the U-shaped valley that attracts so many visitors to its scenic vistas.[8]
European American settlers first entered Yosemite Valley itself in 1851. There are earlier instances of other travelers entering the Valley but James D. Savage is credited with discovering the area that became Yosemite National Park.[10] Despite Savage and others claiming their discovery of Yosemite, the region and Valley itself have been inhabited for nearly 4,000 years, although humans may have visited the area as long as 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Yosemite was critical to the development of the national park idea. Galen Clark and others lobbied to protect Yosemite Valley from development, ultimately leading to President Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Yosemite Grant of 1864 which declared Yosemite as federally preserved land.[13] It was not until 1890 that John Muir led a successful movement which had Congress establish Yosemite Valley and its surrounding areas as a National Park. This helped pave the way for the National Park System.[13] Yosemite draws about four million visitors each year,[14] and most visitors spend the majority of their time in the seven square miles (18 km2) of Yosemite Valley.[8] The park set a visitation record in 2016, surpassing five million visitors for the first time in its history.[15] The park began requiring reservations to access the park during peak periods starting in 2020 as a response to the rise in visitors.
Yosemite Valley represents only one percent of the park area, but this is where most visitors arrive and stay. The Tunnel View is the first view of the Valley for many visitors and is extensively photographed. El Capitan, a prominent granite cliff that looms over Yosemite Valley, is one of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the world because of its diverse range of climbing routes in addition to its year-round accessibility. Granite domes such as Sentinel Dome and Half Dome rise 3,000 and 4,800 feet (910 and 1,460 m), respectively, above the valley floor. The park contains dozens of other granite domes.[82]
The high country of Yosemite contains beautiful areas such as Tuolumne Meadows, Dana Meadows, the Clark Range, the Cathedral Range, and the Kuna Crest. The Sierra crest and the Pacific Crest Trail run through Yosemite, with peaks of red metamorphic rock, such as Mount Dana and Mount Gibbs, and granite peaks, such as Mount Conness. Mount Lyell is the highest point in the park, standing at 13,120 feet (4,000 m). The Lyell Glacier is the largest glacier in Yosemite National Park and is one of the few remaining in the Sierra Nevada.[83]
The park has three groves of ancient giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) trees; the Mariposa Grove (200 trees), the Tuolumne Grove (25 trees), and the Merced Grove (20 trees).[84] This species grows larger in volume than any other and is one of the tallest and longest-lived.[85]
Water and ice
The Merced River flowing through Yosemite Valley, a U-shaped valley
The Tuolumne and Merced River systems originate along the crest of the Sierra Nevada in the park and have carved river canyons 3,000 to 4,000 feet (910 to 1,220 m) deep. The Tuolumne River drains the entire northern portion of the park, an area of approximately 680 square miles (1,800 km2). The Merced River begins in the park's southern peaks, primarily the Cathedral and Clark Ranges, and drains an area of approximately 511 square miles (1,320 km2).[

"Surf City" nickname controversy
The Monument to the Surfer
Main article: Surf City, USA
After Huntington Beach, California, trademarked the "Surf City USA" name, Santa Cruz politicians tried to stop the mark from being registered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office because of a 10-year-old controversy over Santa Cruz's nickname "Surf City."[65] Huntington Beach has obtained a total of seven registrations for the "Surf City USA" trademark.[66] None of these registrations of the trademark are on the principal register, but on the secondary register, which means that Huntington Beach has no exclusive right to assert ownership over the "Surf City USA" trademark. Two Santa Cruz surf shops, Shoreline Surf Shop and Noland's on the Wharf, sued the city of Huntington Beach in order to protect the public use of the term "Surf City."[67] The parties reached a confidential settlement in January 2008, in which neither side admitted liability and all claims and counterclaims were dismissed. The Santa Cruz surf shops continue to print T-shirts, and the Visitor's Bureau retains the right to use the trademark.[68]

Travel over trestles, through towering redwood groves and up a winding narrow-gauge grade to the summit of Bear Mountain as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest.
In the 1880s, narrow-gauge steam locomotives were used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains. Roaring Camp’s steam engines date from 1890 and are among the oldest and most authentically preserved narrow-gauge steam engines providing regularly scheduled passenger service in America.
Felton, Calif. – Among geared locomotives, three companies (Shay, Heisler and Climax) are widely credited with dominating the logging and industrial marketplace. Shay locomotives were designed in 1872 particularly for Western U.S. logging operations. Roaring Camp Railroads owns several Shay locomotives, a Heisler, Climax, and five diesel engines. Not all are operational as some are undergoing renovation and extensive refurbishing. On any given day, one might see one or more of the following steam locomotives transporting visitors deep into the heart of the breathtaking Santa Cruz Mountains.
All departures are roundtrip to Bear Mountain, returning to Roaring Camp.

The tornado touched down shortly before 3 p.m. along Old Melones Road along the south end of New Melones Lake and west of Sonora and Jamestown. Saturday's tornado in Tuolumne County damaged the Woods Creek Mobile Home Park in Jamestown. Initially, the National Weather Service Sacramento listed the tornado as having a max width of 1,000 yards (.568 miles) and a path length of .8 miles with winds peaking at 90 miles per hour.
On Monday, however, NWS corrected their numbers to a path width of just 100 yards
No injuries were reported. Though, the tornado did damage several trees and snapped at least two power poles in half, the NWS said. This came as severe thunderstorms moved east through the region. The area was under tornado, severe thunderstorm, and flash flood warnings all at once.
The city of Sonora was one area that had extensive reports of roadway flooding over the course of the afternoon and evening. Going into Sunday, sandbag locations were set up around the region.

2023 Yosemite National Park Survives Atmospheric River Storm and gets a fresh coat of snow! 4K HDR
A meteorological phenomenon known as an atmospheric river is forecast to bring days of rain and heavy winds to the West. An atmospheric river is a relatively narrow channel of wind, hence the "river," that transports water vapor from the tropics to the West Coast. Powerful rivers that arrive at just the right angle of the coast can carry all the way to the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite National Park.
Atmospheric rivers are actually responsible for a good majority of the rainfall during the colder season which is the season when [the West Coast] gets most of the rain. New Research Shows How 'Atmospheric Rivers' Wreak Havoc Around The Globe Atmospheric rivers that contain the largest amounts of water vapor and strongest winds lead to extreme rainfall and flooding, causing damage to property and inducing mudslides.
This storm could bring as much as four inches of rain in the next two days and wind speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. The first wave of the storm brought up to 2 inches of rain throughout the San Francisco Bay with more expected to come. Any damage will only compound recovery efforts by the state, faced with structural issues resulting from the late-December storm, which caused a levee breach on the Cosumnes River in Sacramento County. Five people were killed as a result of the New Year’s storm. National parks in the mountains of Northern and central California aren’t escaping the storm’s force either. The National Weather Service has issued a winter-storm warning for the western slope of the northern Sierra Nevada, including Yosemite National Park. (although currently only seasonal road closures are in effect in the park area). Higher elevations of the park could see snow accumulations of up to four feet.South of Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are partially closed due to strong winter-storm conditions. These closures include Azalea Campground and Generals Highway, which provides access to Giant Forest, popular snow-play areas, and sequoia groves. The entire park is under a winter-storm and flood watch.

The idea of Christmas Town Sonora debuted last year as an initiative spearheaded by the Sonora Chamber of Commerce. Similar to what is witnessed in a seasonal Hallmark movie, the idea is to put on special events that draw both locals and visitors to the downtown district.
Aspects like Christmas Tree Lane, where non-profits decorate trees at Courthouse Park, and special kids crafting events, were highlights of year one, and will return in 2023.
In addition, there will be a new lighting ceremony at 5:30pm on November 23 (Thanksgiving Eve) from the parking lot of the Sonora Fire Museum. There will be local dignitaries, an officiant from the St James Episcopal Church (Red Church), elves from the SRT production of Elf, and others on hand to help countdown a synchronized lighting of prominent buildings downtown.
That following Friday evening, November 25, will be the city sponsored Christmas Parade. From 3 pm to 6 pm on the 25th and from 9 am to 3pm on the 26th is the Red Church Christmas Bazaar.
Christmas Town events will then pick up on December 3 and continue over the three weekends leading up to Christmas. They include free horse and carriage rides around the downtown district, crafting with Tuolumne County Arts, family photo opportunities hosted by Blue Zones and Friends of the Animal Community, ginger bread house decorating, storytelling in the Odd Fellows Lodge, carolers on Washington Street, a holiday music concert at the St. James Church. Christmas Tree Lane and Winter Wonderland will be at Courthouse Park and Coffill Park December 3rd to the 31st.

Columbia was once known as the "Gem of the Southern Mines." Between the 1850s and 1870s over one billion dollars in gold (at today's value) was mined in the area. For a time, Columbia was the second largest city in California. Unlike many other settlements that disappeared due to fire, vandalism and time, Columbia survived. It was never completely deserted. In 1945 the State Legislature made the site a State Historic Park in order to preserve a typical Gold Rush town, an example of one of the most colorful eras in American history. Today visitors can take a step back in time to experience life in Gold Rush era of the 1850's and 60's in California.
Parking and entrance to Columbia State Historic Park are free. Additional fees may apply for special events in the park.
The park itself is still a bustling town with many local business to explore. Visitors can taste hand-dipped chocolates, a superior cup of coffee, savor fine dining, family fare or purchase picnic provisions. Stagecoach rides are available, season and weather permitting. There's also the chance to relax at one of two comfortable hotels, listen to music in historic saloons, or take in a performances at the Fallon Theatre. Visitors can make a candle or purchase Columbia soap, wooden toys, old fashion clothes, or dress-up for a photograph.
Other highlights include taking a walk to the two-story brick school house and cemetery overlooking town, or hiking the one-mile nature trail where mule deer and wild flowers may be seen.

It takes a special kind of lodging property to garner the "Premier Lodge" classification from National Park Reservations. The Ahwahnee Hotel (formerly Majestic Yosemite Hotel) with its striking granite facade, magnificent log-beamed ceilings, massive stone hearths, richly colored Native American artwork, and finely appointed rooms is a shining example of what we consider to be the premier lodge in the Yosemite area.
The Ahwahnee Hotel is located in the majestic, jaw-dropping main valley inside Yosemite Park near the base of Half Dome and Glacier Point. This hotel, built-in 1927 is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most distinctive resort hotels in North America. You will find the Ahwahnee Hotel in the center of the Yosemite Valley, an ideal location to view the Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and Glacier Point.

Every room is designed for comfort and visual delight and reflects the natural surroundings and Native American influence of Yosemite's past.
Some of the most well-loved aspects of The Ahwahnee Hotel are its grand public spaces featuring giant stone fireplaces, massive hand-stenciled beams, rich tapestries, and elegant stained glass.

Yosemite National Park - Rock Climbers scale El Capitan in Yosemite! SWINGING 800 feet in the air!
Yosemite Rock Climbing
Yosemite Valley has been the site for almost every major development in the sport of rock climbing and continues to be a place where world-class climbers are honing their skills, breaking records and changing our understanding of what is possible for human strength and endurance.
Rock Climbing Guide
If you are an experienced climber, read the Yosemite Guidelines for Seasoned Climbers before venturing out. Also, familiarize yourself with the area first with these great Yosemite maps, including Yosemite regional maps and trail maps.
Whether you’ve been climbing for years and are ready to take on the big walls of Yosemite or it’s your first time, Yosemite Mountaineering School & Guide Service is there to help you “learn the ropes.”
Choose from half-day, full-day, multiple-day and customized climbing sessions.
You can also join the “Ask A Climber” program in the summer, where you can meet a real climber, learn about their equipment, and even ask them questions, such as “How do climbers sleep?”
El Capitan Climbing
While tackling El Capitan is a goal that requires years of training, you can have the experience of climbing in the park with the Yosemite Mountaineering School. In operation since 1969, the Yosemite Mountaineering School has programs for all skill levels and even specialty programs, such as Girls on Granite.
Just want to be a spectator? No problem! Head over to El Capitan meadow with a telescope or powerful zoom lens on your DSLR and watch the climbers as they make their ascent. Climbing is a year-round activity, depending on weather.
Climbing Half Dome
Half Dome. It’s perhaps the most iconic symbol of Yosemite National Park. Rising 1,360 feet from an elevation of 8,844 feet above sea level, climbing Half Dome will take you dizzying heights with its sheer face and reward you with unparalleled views you’ll remember for a lifetime.
Alternatively, if you’re up for a strenuous, 17-mile trek, you can also hike Half Dome, where you’ll gain 4,800 feet of elevation while passing Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall.

Tunnel View in the Fall Season
The view that Ansel Adams made famous, Tunnel View is a must stop for any first time visit to Yosemite Valley. Find it just outside the Wawona Tunnel on State Highway 41. No hiking is required, you simply park at one of the lots and make your way to the vista. This spot can be very popular in summer, so try to arrive early.
From this vista you can see El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall. This vista changes with each season to show something new but the best times to see Tunnel View are early spring (when Bridalveil Fall is at peak flow) and winter, when the beautiful granite domes are draped in snow and mist.
Valley Welcome Center and New Restroom Construction
This project will convert the former Sport Shop building to the new Valley Welcome Center. The visitor orientation function of the Valley Visitor Center will relocate here upon completion in March 2023.
Dates: Through March 2023
Impact: Staging for this project and the Yosemite Village parking project will result in the temporary loss of 87 parking spaces adjacent to the Village Store.

Carmel-by-the-Sea - often simply called Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902. Situated on the #monterey Peninsula, #Carmel is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. In 1906, the San Francisco Call devoted a full page to the "artists, writers and poets at Carmel-by-the-Sea", and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts." Early City Councils were dominated by artists, and several of the city's mayors have been poets or actors, including Herbert Heron, founder of the Forest Theater, bohemian writer and actor Perry Newberry, and actor-director Clint Eastwood, who served as mayor from 1986 to 1988.
The town is known for being dog-friendly, with numerous hotels, restaurants and retail establishments admitting guests with dogs. Carmel is also known for several unusual laws, including a prohibition on wearing high-heeled shoes without a permit, enacted to prevent lawsuits arising from tripping accidents caused by irregular pavement.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is located on the #pacific coast, about 300 miles (480 km) north of Los Angeles and 100 miles (160 km) south of #SanFrancisco. Communities near Carmel-by-the-Sea include Carmel Valley and Carmel Highlands. The larger town of Monterey borders Carmel to the north.

Car Show - Concours d'Elegance
CAR SHOW Concours d’Elegance Murphys California 2022 Ironstone Car Show 4K
Concours d'Elegance (French: concours d'élégance) is a term of French origin that means a "competition of elegance" and refers to an event where prestigious vehicles are displayed and judged. It dates back to 17th-century France, where aristocrats paraded horse-drawn carriages in the parks of Paris during summer weekends and holidays. Over time, carriages became horseless and the gatherings became a competition among vehicle owners to be judged on the appearance of their vehicles. These events are often held at automobile shows, after racing competitions or, especially in the United States, as a fundraising event for charities.
A Rolls-Royce Phantom IV exhibited in the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.
The oldest still-extant Concours, the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, is held annually near the Villa d’Este hotel in Cernobbio, on Lake Como in Italy. The first of these was held in September 1929. The first Concours in North America was held in 1950 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey, California, in conjunction with the first Pebble Beach Road Race. The longest continually-running event is the Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance in California, which has been held every year since 1956 (both Villa d'Este and Pebble Beach have skipped years since 1956).
Judging
Numerous local organizations sponsor Concours events. Traditionally, vehicle judging at a Concours is more demanding than that of a local neighborhood or general automobile show. Trained judges examine the vehicle thoroughly. They rate each and every component. Only those vehicles that are judged perfect (or very nearly so) in every way are considered eligible for trophy class.
Often, the competitiveness of a Concours d'Elegance forces restoration of a vehicle to surpass "mint" condition. Mint condition would be the state of the vehicle when it originally left the factory. Concours-quality cars are often given upholstery, paint, plating, and mechanical restoration to a standard far exceeding that of the car when it was new.

Concours d'Elegance competitions also are run for classic cars. Here, the emphasis is as much on originality as the condition, although this also is very important. The general aim is to present a vehicle that is in the same, or better, condition than it was in when it left the production line. Unless original, modifications are not allowed, and components must be suitable for the year and model of the automobile. Even components or features fitted to automobiles of the same type, but in a different production year or trim level, are not allowed. Original-equipment accessories from the manufacturers' own range are allowed and some competitions allow after-market equipment and accessories, provided they are of the correct period. The automobiles must be presented in flawless visual condition, as with other Concours-grade cars.
