Russia: Panic, protests follow Putin's call for 'partial mobilization' | DW News
Russian President Vladimir Putin made a rare televised address to the Russian people on Wednesday morning when he announced a "partial mobilization," saying the measure was needed to protect Russian people from what he called "the entire war machine of the collective West" in Ukraine.
Many in Russia fear a "partial mobilization" of the military is the first step in a move that would see more and more men fight – and die – in Ukraine. Some have tried to escape and others have even dared to protest.

US President Biden condemns Russian invasion of Ukraine in UN speech – BBC News

Mr Biden urged the world to see Russia's "outrageous acts for what they are" and said no-one sought conflict apart from Moscow.
His words came just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military reservists are to be sent to Ukraine as part of a partial mobilisation of Russian forces.

War in Ukraine overshadows UN session | DW News
The world is in "great peril, and paralyzed" United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned the 77th session of the UN General Assembly kicked off on Tuesday.
After the COVID-19 pandemic restricted in-person attendance the previous two years, more than 150 heads of state and government were expected to attend the annual gathering in New York.
Guterres told them that nations were "gridlocked in colossal global dysfunction'' and weren't ready or willing to tackle the major challenges that threaten the future of humanity and the fate of the planet.
"Trust is crumbling, inequalities are exploding, our planet is burning. People are hurting, with the most vulnerable suffering the most," he said.
The UN Chief said there is hope, stressing that cooperation and dialogue are the only path forward, he warned that "no power or group alone can call the shots.''
"Let's work as one, as a coalition of the world, as united nations,'' he urged leaders gathered in the vast General Assembly hall.

Putin announces partial mobilization in Russia | DW News
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he signed a decree on partial military mobilization of forces on Wednesday.
Putin said in a televised address that his aim was to "liberate" Ukraine's eastern Donbas region and that he is defending Russian territories. He added that people in the region did not want to return to what he called the "yoke" of Ukraine.
The Russian leader stressed he was "talking about partial mobilization, that is, only citizens who are currently in the reserve will be subject to conscription, and above all, those who served in the armed forces and have a certain military specialty and relevant experience."

Will a shift to LNG save Germany from running out of gas? | DW News
Gas storage facilities in Germany are more than 90% full, according to data released by the Aggregated Gas Storage Inventory (AGSI), a European energy data platform. The German government has planned for 95% of storage capacity to be filled by November. The storage is seen as essential for Germany to get through winter without Russian gas imports. "If everything goes well, savings in Germany are high and if we have a bit of luck with the weather, we will have a chance at getting through the winter comfortably," Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Monday. "That means, however, that the storage facilities will be empty again at the end of the winter — in this case really empty, because we are going to use the gas," he added.
Germany seeks alternative gas sources
Russia had supplied about 40% of the European Union's gas before its February invasion of Ukraine. In early September, Russian energy giant Gazprom said gas supplies to Western Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline had stopped entirely, claiming equipment issues. The German government has accused Moscow of "weaponizing" gas deliveries in response to Berlin's support of Ukraine and EU sanctions.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was expected to sign contracts for liquefied natural gas (LNG) during his visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Economic Affairs and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck said on Monday. "The gas offering is slowly broadening," he said. Habeck was touring Lubmin, where the construction of one of Germany's new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals was set to start. The construction is part of a plan to stop the country's dependency on Russian fossil fuels in the wake of the war in Ukraine. "We must show that, in times like these, we can plan, authorize and build faster than is usually the case in Germany," Habeck said of the construction drive. Scholz will visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the weekend, and Germany's energy needs are high on the agenda.
