We’re making an extended stay in Oaxaca because there is so much to see. We made a failed attempt to visit Monte Albon, but we finally realized that it was Revolution Day, a national Mexican holiday. So we change course and explore the gorgeous Centro - downtown Oaxaca. We delight in a delicious meal for only $10 American dollars and explore the sites. Then, we return the following day to Monte Albon where we have an adventure filled, Mexican experience with an almost-English- speaking guide, and buy a not-so-one-of-a-kind spirit animal. We left our tropical camp at La Tecla and made a bee-line down the hot and steamy coast. With no reliable wifi for the entire journey, we hoped to upload our overdue videos in the surfer-city of Puerto Escondido. We’ve bottomed out! We left Tequilla and headed south toward Colima. As the miles rolled by, we left the agave fields behind and entered a magical tropical paradise. On our travels, we tend to avoid campgrounds and cities - rather we seek out-of-the way places where we can explore nature, enjoy solitude, and allow the dogs to play. But, so far on this journey through Mexico, we have not seen other overlands on the road or in the campgrounds. And we’ve realized how much we miss interacting with other travelers. The campground outside of Durango turned out to be an oasis. Not only did we have a safe and comfortable place to camp with swimming and soaking pools, but we met a young couple from Costa Rica. They have been traveling for over two years in their adorable yellow VW van. We hit it off with Jhonny, Katthy and their kitty, Balam, sharing where we’ve traveled and exchanging information about our favorite places. Spending time with this delightful couple reminded us of how much we’d missed building these kinds of relationships on the road. After an incredible week on the beach in San Carlos, we’re headed for the mountains and hopefully some cooler temperatures. On Google maps, the trip says it will take over 8 hours, but the mileage wasn’t that far. So, we got an early start. As soon as we began climbing, we knew it would be a long day of slow curves and tight corners. But, what awaited us was worth the trip. One evening while walking the dogs on the beach in San Carols, we stumbled upon a baby sea turtle release at sunset. We were greeted warmly and invited to stay and watch the event. It was amazing to watch these tiny little creatures make their way along what must have seemed like an endless sandy beach - to only be swept into the ocean by the waves. After talking to the biologist heading the program, we were invited to visit and interview Edward Perez at the Incubator Center, where they rescue and care for at-risk sea turtle nests in the Guaymas and San Carlos area. We’ve made it to San Carlos, Mexico, but things aren't exactly going the way we planned. After much planning and double checking the systems in the van, things still seem to be going wrong. Our composting toilet is smells like an outhouse and we can’t fill our water tank in the van at the local aqua purficada. Matt had a system to fill the tank from 5 gallon garfons in case a hose-fill wasn’t available. But, while make upgrades to the van, he moved the batteries and now he can’t hook up the water pump. We're on a local adventure-turned-family-mystery. After joining up with Kristina's sister, Ingrid, and her husband, Andy we head to Leadville and Twin Lakes. Our beautiful, high-elevation adventure turns into a search for Andy's grandparent's grave. As the story unfolds we learn that Andy's grandparents and two of their children were caught in the fatal 1962 avalanche in the mining town of Twin Lakes. His grandparents survived, but their two young sons perished under the snow. What started out as a search for the graves of the children and the recent graves of his grandparents turns to a journey into the fatal event and the heroic volunteers who came to this small town's rescue. Our van life summer is coming to an end, and it's time for us to leave the cool and moist weather on the coast and begin our journey inland. We had found refuge from the heatwave on the coast of Oregon and had found a wonderful place to stay for a couple of days. We’ve spent the better part of this summer trying to stay out of the heatwave that has blanketed a large part of the country. We have found refuge once again in the cool Northwest coast where we’ve found massive waterfalls, moss dripping from trees, and of course the gorgeous beaches on the Pacific Ocean. While taking the dogs for a walk on the beach, we discovered a group of grey whales just offshore. Without our telephoto lens, we used the drone to get spectacular shots of the whales playing and scraping the barnacles off of themselves by rubbing against the shallow rocks near the beach. We’re still searching for higher elevations and cooler temperatures. And our journey has brought us to northern Idaho and western Montana. After an incredible hike in the Cascades that kicked our butts (see last week's video), we headed east on Route 2. We saw a pullout off the road and a small sign for the falls. We thought we would stretch our legs and take a short break. What we found blew our minds! We had stumbled upon one of the most amazing natural wonders around - Kootenai Falls and the Swinging Bridge. We escaped the wave of heat that had blanketed the Northwest and took the opportunity to explore the stunning Cascade Mountains. We headed for scenic highway 2 and found a campsite full of lush ferns, massive trees, and the crystal-clear Beckler River. We were saddened to find loads of trash in such a pristine place. After cleaning up the camp, we headed out for a stunning hike to not only a massive waterfall but climbed an additional arduous and steep 2 miles to Lake Serene.
