In this video, I talk about brush choice, painting with the palette knife, my current method of choosing brushes, sanding down, benefits of stepping back when you paint, how to paint intricate detail in the folds of the cloth, how to develop such a complex piece, how to mix your colors, how to organize your palette, and a special technique I used here called haloing.
Being the GREATEST PAINTER IN HISTORY is not an easy task. It can be very lonely always having to wait for the peasants to catch up to my juicy thought process which is why I have graced YouTube with my glorious and buttery videos. It is my wish that I bring your brain closer to my superior brain with these masterfully edited sequences of succulent imagery. You're welcome.
Painting still lifes can $uck balls. Let's be honest. BIG ONES. This fact alone is the reason why I have made this still life video for you. I have made sure that this video goes over all of the basics and it is for this reason that your quantity of mental consumption while watching this perfectly forged masterpiece is only limited by your tiny IQ. Don't worry my dear simpleton. I am here to increase that IQ and I will do it very easily for such is my gift to humanity.
When painting still lifes, take your time in setting them up. You want to choose objects that are not too complicated if you are first starting in oil painting. Your goal should be to paint two or three objects in an attractive composition that conveys space. Do not line the objects up in a row like an idiot. Put one closer and one further away. It helps to have a main object, a supporting object that compliments your main object, and perhaps a smaller one that guides your eye to the scene. Use the folds in the cloth to guide the viewers eye to either the main object or to the surrounding objects. You want to have interesting colors to look at while having an inspiring light setup. Taking your time setting your still life up is key. I normally take at least a day or three to set mine up. I have posted a video link in the description above that goes over my reasons for setting up this particular still life.
Take your time painting! I know the pressure to post on IG and other social media for fear of becoming irrelevant is fearful. However, as artists we must strive to be able to spend several months on a solid piece. We can supplement these long projects with shorter alla primas to keep us lose and to help prevent us from becoming too stiff. Long paintings give us the opportunity to push ourselves past where we would otherwise stop. They can be very difficult but we learn patience and persistence which are two valuable skills to develop for the serious artist. Don't be weak. It is more important to produce a painting you are proud of years from now than making quick work that will be forgotten in a month.
If you are feeling discouraged as an artist, just know that I had a very difficult time when I first started painting and I constantly come up against road blocks that set me back. The most important thing you can do is to work hard and to never give up. Every artist goes through very difficult situations inside and outside of the studio.
I spent my time making this video in the interest of helping those of you who are interested in learning how to paint a still life but might not know how to go about it. I am always here to help you and answer whatever questions you might have.

In this video, my insane knowledge of alla prima is exploded yet again into video form to inspire and educate. If you are a beginner, it can be very difficult to know how to develop the color when there are so many things to juggle in a painting. I made this video so you can learn how to develop the color and how preparing your palette in a specific way can greatly improve your workflow. I walk you through the entire process from start to finish.
This is a master copy of John Singer Sargent's portrait of John Ridgeley Carter I live-streamed on Twitch. Sargent is a master of getting the drawing and impression while maintaining very loose brushstrokes that look a bit messy up close, but from further back, become unified and refined.
I am using a limited palette in this video which means I am only using ivory black, cadmium red, yellow ochre, and cremnitz white. This palette is great for mixing a wide variety of fleshtones. It is also a great way to learn how to mix colors in oil painting because you are having to focus on less colors to get a specific color. If you are first beginning to paint and you want to learn the academic method, I highly recommend starting with the limited palette. You will go further faster and over time, you will be able to slowly introduce new colors onto your palette.
When I first started in oil paint, I had a very hard time organizing my palette, my brushes, and understanding how I was supposed to build the paint and color up. I was told not to focus too much on color at first so I could get the drawing correct. It's not that the teachers were asking me to not focus at all on color, but they didn't want it distracting me from the development of the drawing and the light values. Instead, they told me to get the drawing and the light impression correct first, and then I could hone in on the colors and improve them once the foundation was correct.
In alla prima, you want to get within the ballpark of the correct colors sooner because it is a quick painting. If the colors are too gray in the beginning, you might have a hard time perfecting them in the end especially if you are a beginner. One thing that will greatly help you with the color in alla prima is to spend time mixing your colors on your palette before you start. Doing so will make it so you won't have to worry about constantly mixing them as you are painting. You will be able to put more focus into your drawing, light impression, brushwork, technique, and brush organization without having to constantly mix and re-mix colors.
I normally mix about five to six piles of paint ranging from dark to light. I will saturate them with color to get them in the ballpark of the general color. The general color of the work is often referred to as the field color. Getting this field color in the beginning will greatly help your work and speed the process up significantly.
The most important thing when you first start in oil painting is to have a lot of patience with yourself. Do not get discouraged if you have been practicing for some time and your work seems to be going nowhere or is getting worse. This happened to me and I almost left the Florence Academy like a little B&%^$H. Just stick with it and try to stay on track with the teachings. Do not entertain bad habits but rather, continuously focus on correcting the drawing, light impression, and color. Oil painting is a juggling act so you will need time to morph everything into it being second nature to you.
If you have any questions or need some encouragement, reach out to me. My information is above. I am constantly in our discord where we have a nice community that I am building.

In this video, I show you a simple drawing exercise anyone can do at home that will dramatically improve your drawing and painting game. I have broken it down into three steps which I have time-stamped below so you can skip to each part. If you want to learn how to draw, this is an excellent short tutorial for you to watch!
The steps I am giving to you are the steps I was taught at the Florence Academy of Art. I will have more interesting videos with much better subjects to paint very soon. I learned from drawing the nude model which is ideal for learning how to draw. I'd like to do more videos on that in the future.

This video is from this stream on Twitch: https://youtu.be/YuZyYrB85QE
I streamed this alla prima portrait painting of Rose on Twitch a few weeks prior. My genius cannot be defined solely in color. It is made known through such peasant work as grisaille as well. As usual, I am here to assist your @$$ so that you too may become a highly advanced and intellectual painter who has the right to look down on all the idiots that surround you.
In this video, I effortlessly teach you how to work your lines in oil painting, how to work the background into your painting, and how to translate color into black and white values. Grisaille is a great way to transition from charcoal drawing into oil painting because you are free to worry about light and dark values and painting technique without having to spend all day trying to figure out color. For the beginner, this is a great exercise. Once you paint a few grisaille paintings, you will find it a bit easier to transition into color.
Even though my teachers recognized my brilliance and knew that I had nothing to gain from doing such peasant exercises, they were wise enough to beg me to paint them because it greatly helped all of my lesser piers in terms of confidence and I was also able to help them by demonstrating my flawless technique that has boosted my @$$ to being the greatest painter to have ever lived on this dreary and cold excuse for a planet.
So in advance, you are welcome for educating your @$$ yet again and gracing you with my unbridled skill that is effortlessly action-packed into video format and specifically made to grow your brain approximately 10X its normal level. Just remember my peasants, my genius nose know bounds and my humility is like a rich wellspring of water that is so thick, it puts the black see to shame. I love you.

In this FLAWLESS video, I bring you inside of how I painted this freaking masterpiece of a painting of Curran Alexander Vineyards here in Lexington, NC and I talk about my experience and mentality when painting commissions.
My dear morons, too many painters whine and complain about painting things they do not like and they end up missing opportunities of improving various techniques and obtaining a better painter mindset. It can be very difficult giving a client what exactly they want and every person and commission is different.
I have found that each situation is unique and some go smoother than others even if you are working for the same person. However, I have also found that I am able to adapt to situations better than before because of these challenges and it has improved my own work. This, among countless other things, makes me a far superior painter to the average mongrel who is too much of a pansy to take on a piece they don't want to do.

Figure Drawing Classes - https://louisguidetti.com/figure-drawing-class/
This is the academic method of developing a figure in pencil as taught at the Florence Academy of Art. We start by drawing the shapes as simple as we can within reason so as to be able to fix proportions at an early stage. In this manner, we are able to lay the foundation for solid development of the work leading to the final stage where we refine.
This drawing took me about 3 hours or so because I have a giant brain, however, if you are first starting and especially if you are a moron, I recommend spending a solid 2 hours on the block in stage and try to force yourself to see the proportions at the initial stage. Doing this will train your brain to understand shapes early on and you will end up saving yourself a ton of time later because you won't need to correct what you have already refined.
If you can draw like this, that means you are an intellectual who is better than everyone else. This means you can look down on those around you. Just remember, if you want to be better than everyone else, you should treat people like the peasants that they are and exalt yourself through the suffering of others. NEVER TAKE THE HIGH ROAD. Always sucker punch to the nuts. I forgot where I was going with this but I'm too lazy to delete it and I doubt anyone will read this far. Having said that, as a test, I made a few mistakes in this drawing. See if you can pick them out.

Left-hand drawing can be very tricky, but I see it as gaining a valuable skill. Portraiture is a great way to learn to draw so I chose this method to train my left hand. Subtlety in pencil portraits is so important and shading plays a huge part. Shading with my left hand was a real challenge but that's why we practice! I have chosen to turn this pencil sketch into a timelapse but I will be showing more real-time drawings for many of my future videos and art tutorials as well.

Figure Drawing Classes - https://louisguidetti.com/figure-drawing-class/
This is the final part of the three figure drawing videos I have exploded onto the internet. Remember my dear peasants! Figure drawing is one of the best methods you can use to train yourself in art. If you can draw a human, you will stand a better chance of painting anything else.
In this video, I refine and shade the drawing in the interest of developing the anatomy. Always keep an eye on the large shape and never overwork an area. Always build the drawing up evenly so you can better compare each part to one another. In this manner, you will have a balanced drawing and it will train your mind to see the entire shape because your eye is moving around the entire drawing.
As stated and linked above, I have released the raw footage for this drawing so you can better study any specific part of the drawing you want. My intention is to give you as much information about the process. This includes the mistakes I make which is important because, as artists, we get better by assessing our mistakes and working past them.

Left Hand Pencil Drawing -- Commentary on My Drawing Technique
Hey Guys! In this video, I continue my epic quest to learn to draw with my left hand by drawing the cutest creature in the entire universe....THE AMELIA -- my niece.
I talk about pencil drawing techniques and the patience it takes to employ them with my left hand. I go over the general construction of the drawing and the issues I had while sketching this portrait.

Welcome simpletons to the first video of a three-part series that further proves my dominance and superiority over the humans. In this video, we delve into the magical world of how to start a figure drawing by blocking it in with a simple technique. This is an excellent method to teach you how to see proportions and angles in an ever-shifting model. It will also improve your ability to simplify what is a complex subject. This method can be used on anything you choose to draw or paint.
It has come to my understanding that figure drawing can be intimidating to many, ergo I have embarked on a noble quest to literally rip the fear out of your mortal form by educating you on the intricacies and subtleties of figure drawing. In the next video, I will teach you how to break down this simple form into a more solid and accurate line drawing while in the third part I will teach you how to refine it.
As I always say, do not be afraid for I will guide you. My goal is to bring the teachings of the Academies to your fat face and spoon feed it to you until you can suckle no more...

My Model Stand Dimensions:

Portraits Stand: 40”X 49”X 17.5”
It is ideal to be eye level to your portrait model whereas, for the full figure, you want to be more around their mid level chest area. Standing at some distance from the model will prevent distortions in perspective.
***I use 2-3 lights to light my subject but it depends on what affect you are going for.***
My dear peasants. It is that time again where I saturate your grey matter with my brilliance. In this effortless video that took me less than an hour to produce from start to finish, I share with you my model stand and lighting setup in my layer I mean studio. I will teach you about the high tech construction of my model stands and the versatile lighting system I use to light my models. It is my intention to teach you these milky keys to success so that you too may bask with me in the garden of ultra-brilliant perfection. You too can create great portraits but only if you listen to me and me only. If you stray from this path, you will surely perish. I love you.

Odorless Mineral Spirits: https://amzn.to/3AW5DW6
Irish Spring Soap (Easily found in store): https://amzn.to/3APf1uK
Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver: https://amzn.to/3CWo25R
*Important safety information*
In this video, I don't use gloves to clean my brushes though it might be smart to especially if you are new to the process. I'm very careful about getting the toxic materials on my skin. I start by wiping the paint off on a paper towel and then I get rid of the excess paint by swabbing the brushes in my brush cleaner filled with odorless mineral spirits. Though odorless, it is still toxic so DO NOT leave the cap off when you aren't using it. If you don't use mineral spirits to get rid of the paint in the initial cleaning process and you proceed to clean the paint only with soap, that mixture of oil paint and soap can solidify overtime within the pipes of the sink which is bad MmmKay...
I then wipe the mineral spirits off on a paper towel and proceed to the sink where I clean the brushes, first with Irish Spring soap and then with Masters Brush Cleaner Soap. When I first start washing them with soap, I am careful not to get the residue on my hands and I scrub the brushes on the bottom of the sink repeatedly between washes and rinses until all of the paint and mineral spirits are out of the brushes. In this manner, I don't get any on my hands. Once I am sure they are fairly clean of the toxins, I continue to soap and rinse my brushes, this time scrubbing and massaging them with my hands.
At this point, I will be extra thorough and use the Master Brush Cleaner soap to finish the cleaning process. Because I use Irish Spring in the beginning to get rid of all the toxins, I don't waste the higher quality Masters Brush Cleaner soap and it lasts longer. Instead, I can use it for the end where I leave it on the brush to condition it. I then wrap the brushes in paper towels and they are good to paint with the following day.
It is very important to take care of you brushes because it will help them last longer and enable you to not fight the brush if it is worn out from poor care. Painting is hard enough so it is worth taking the time to preserve your materials. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Legend speaks of the Mighty Gherx who wonders about this dark a dreary world slaying all who stand in his way...in Overwatch. There is no task that he will not take on including drawing. Being a creature of destruction, Gherx is not used to the art of creating. However, in this video, we will take a dive into the mind of Gherx by viewing one of his drawings and seeing what we can do to improve upon his glorious Roadhog. Oh and Clara is in it again.

This skull oil painting took me about 6 hours to paint which was very good practice. I talk about this a lot in my video but pencil drawing really helps painting because it makes you better at getting the shapes faster so you can focus on paint development. I was a bit rusty and I'm very critical of how I painted in this video but this is how I improve myself.
I wanted to get something out for y'all for Halloween so hopefully this video has some solid information that will help you in your own work. Happy Halloween!

Why I Draw from Live Models -- Drawing Tips & Setup
Big thanks to Rose in this video for being a good sport and letting me put her in this video and also for helping me to film it. Rose works with me in my studio and I highly recommend taking a look at her website and Instagram as she is becoming a very strong artist:

My dear peasants. After watching this video, you will experience an increase in blood flow to your cranial region. I have designed this video to specifically send the blood through the lateral geniculate nucleus in the thalamus and then straight into your visual cortex at approximately 186,001 mph. This is 1 mph faster than the speed of light. At this speed, your blood will have broken the sound barrier no less than 241.5597402597403 times in a split second. During this time, you might feel a slight itch but you might also notice your intellect more than tripling. This is normal and by design. Just go with it. By the end of this masterpiece of Youtube genius, you will know how to set up your model for portraiture, how to talk to your model, how to effectively capture them in pencil, and why this type of exercise is important. Drawing from a live model is one of the most important exercises you could possibly do especially if you are a painter or a sculptor which is why I am saturating your face with this video. Do not worry my creatures. I will form you into powerful weapons of artistic destruction that are able to fully utilize all the wondrous features of working with live models. I will do videos on working with charcoal and oil paint in the future but for now, working in pencil is the best way to learn proportions especially if you are first starting out.
