Hoffman Ponds, came out and we installed a pond aerator with 4 diffusers, 2 in each of our ponds, we trenched and buried the weighted air lines, and installed a fish feeder that is on a timer and Jeff also added some dye & bacterial additive to reduce the weeds and sediment that have been taking over the ponds the last couple of years. Sharon here. I take my metal detector out in the back field that has been freshly worked up for a food plot. Perfect time to see what I can find. As this was an old homesite and wagon trail many years ago, each year I find more evidence of an old homesite, wagon and farm equipment and ceramic and glazed pottery pieces. Today I pull out a 5 foot solid copper grounding wire. My biggest find yet! More proof of a tall building. Like what you see? This one tree took me over 30 minutes of digging to uproot it! This was a recent land management project here in Southern Illinois where I was expanding a path in the woods, making it wider so that the landowner could get a truck and trailer through this road back into the woods. Nice HD video clip of a beautiful 3 year old Illinois buck! Today is just a quick episode to see what you think as to whether this is the same buck or not. Last year, 2021, the 'Oreo' buck was very visible all over our property, the entire season, and we passed him many times. I called him the oreo buck because one of his antlers was noticeably darker then the other. Recently I got a nice HD still trail cam picture and an HD trail cam video of a beautiful buck that I think IS the Oreo buck. The buck appears to be a 3 year old based on my experience. In today's episode we are not only improving the cash value of this Southern Illinois land, but the intrinsic value as well. Join us for PART 2 of 2 of this deer watering hole/wildlife pond build as we document the entire process of building a wildlife pond in the woods, aka deer watering hole. In today's episode I'll be using my bobcat e42 R2 series mini excavator and my buddy Phil will be using his compact tractor with a dirt bucket and a back blade. Then we will dig the core trench, also known as a keyway trench. While digging the core trench I will be separating the dirt with the darker dirt and roots going on the back side of the future pond dam, and the 'clean dirt' or clean clay going on the inside of the pond dam so that we can put it back in the core trench to compact it at the base of the future pond dam. This is precisely why I have build many watering ponds on our property here in Southern Illinois, and have also built many of them for client properties. We have had nearly 6 weeks of zero rain, lots of heat and sunshine down here and all of my food plots and clover plots have burned to a crisp. But we still hold lots of deer and wildlife because we have abundant watering sources on our property. Today since I was passing by this particular watering pond I wanted to stop in for a depth check and to maybe scoop it a little deeper if need be for future droughts. I was happy that there was still at least 2 feet of water in it, and just TONS of wildlife tracks around it (I really should have a trail cam on it right now!) So I scooped out some of the weeds, in case it continues to drop. But soon we'll have a pond expert here to fix up and treat our big ponds and I will also have some of the weeds killed off on these smaller ponds to keep them a bit cleaner for wildlife usage.
