Among The Unknown | Exploring An Abandoned Bowling Alley w/ @WallieB26 Episode 71
This bowling alley closed in 2019 due to a chemical fire from a neighboring building. Since then, it has been sitting vacant. In 2018, it failed to sell at auction. It was also used as filming location in the 1996 comedy, Kingpin and the 2000 movie, Wonder boys. This building was once a brewery which stopped production prior to prohibition.

Among The Unknown | The Abandoned Berg Place Apartments (Pittsburgh, PA) Episode 70
The Berg Place Apartments in the Carrick Neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA, closed down in 2014 after sewage backed up into the complex. The landlord was fined for multiple city code violations. At the time, there was no running water and intermittent sewage services and a family had to use water from a garden hose in order to bathe, flush toilets, and cook. A Councilwoman, who represents Carrick, said in quote:
"What’s very frustrating is that when (the landlord) acquired the
property in question, it was a very nice apartment complex.
But since he has owned it, it just evolved into a slum."

Among The Unknown | Exploring An Abandoned Powder Plant Episode 67 (Season 12 Premiere)
There were 2 explosions that occurred here. One in the 1940s, (which was the first serious accident in over 10 years), and another one in the 1950s. A total of 7 people were killed between both explosions.
The death toll would had been higher in the 1940s explosion if it would had occurred a few minutes earlier, as a group of men were sent out to get supplies just before the explosion occurred.
When it did occur, it scattered the death victims many yards away.

Among The Unknown | The “Abandoned” Almono Pumphouse Episode 66 (Season 11 Finale)
The Almono Pumphouse was built in 1870 and was once used to pull river water up to cool machinery at the former LTV (Ling-Temco-Vought Incorporation) Steel mill (LTV Coke Works), which closed in 1997/1998, in the neighborhood of Hazelwood, approximately 12-15 minutes away from downtown Pittsburgh, PA.
In 2002, Almono LP was formed by four Pittsburgh foundations (today, Almono is composed of three foundations) to purchase the Hazelwood site where the steel mill was, from a bankrupt LTV for $10 million, in thoughts of redeveloping the site that could benefit the neighborhood, city, and region as a whole, which created the project: Hazelwood Green.
The vision for Hazelwood Green is guided by the following design and development principles:
Economic – Creating Value
Community – Ensuring Diversity
Physical – Placemaking Design
Sustainability
From 2002 to 2015/2016, RIDC (The Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Southwestern Pennsylvania) served as the sole member of Almono LLC, the general partner which at the time, had plans to turn the pumphouse into a restaurant and make it a place for people to enjoy the views.
Now, the pumphouse sits, waiting for what the future may bring.

Among The Unknown | The Abandoned Holy Family Church/St. John Neumann School (REVISIT) Episode 63.5
Holy Family was established as a Polish parish in 1902. The parish was formed in response to the growth of Polish immigrants to the Lawrenceville area of Pittsburgh, PA.
In 1900, a group of these immigrants formed a committee to explore the possibility of forming a parish. They began fund raising for a church and, in 1902, petitioned the bishop for permission to form a parish. The bishop granted his permission in October of 1902 and land for a church was purchased shortly afterwards.
Construction of a combined church and school building
began in late 1902 or early 1903. The cornerstone was laid on June 7, 1903,
and the completed building was dedicated on March 20, 1904.
As early as the late 1920's, the parish began making plans to build a new church.
However, the depression struck the country before work could begin on a church and the financial difficulties that rose out of the depression, put these plans on hold.
It was not until 1939 that the parish could proceed with their building plans. The cornerstone was laid on January 7, 1940, and the church was dedicated on October 28, 1940.
This building was torn down in 1963 to make room for a new school, convent and rectory.
In 1993, Holy Family merged with three other parishes to form the new Our Lady of the Angels parish.
At first, the Holy Family Church remained open and continued to serve the new parish. However, as time went on, it became obvious that the parish could not support three church buildings.
The parish closed the Holy Family Church on Dec. 28, 2008 with the St. John Neumann School closing in 2010.
Now in 2021, there are now plans for the location to be demolished.
Instead of making this a mini-episode (Exploring With Among The Unknown series), since I've already explored this place in 2018, I'm making this a half episode since this time, it was explored during the day and you can see a lot better.

Among The Unknown Mini-Episode 38 | The Abandoned Westinghouse Flood Gate (2020 REVISIT)
The Westinghouse Flood Gate, construction starting in 1937-1938, and closing in 1989, was used to to prevent catastrophic floods within the Turtle Creek valley.
The project was the result of a 1907 flood, the St. Patrick’s Day Flood of 1936 and another flood in May 1946 that brought back flow from the Monongahela River into the Turtle Creek valley.
It was estimated that $56,000 would need to be spent to maintain the project.
The floodgate and pumps underneath the Westinghouse Bridge had been rendered useless due to silt buildup which resulted in its abandonment.

Among The Unknown | The Abandoned Super 30 Motel Episode 60
On June 15th, 2016, a fire started around 1AM at the Super 30 Motel.
The building was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived.
An 18-year-old firefighter accused of torching the motel, was charged and told police he did it because he knew the building was used for drug and sexual activity, and he was "tired of it".
He purchased about one gallon of gasoline and transported it to the motel in a gas can.
He then entered an opened door and began pouring the gasoline around the motel steps and interior and then lit the gasoline with a lighter, returned to his vehicle, and drove home.
He was arrested on charges of arson, causing or risking a catastrophe and failure to control or report dangerous fires.
He had only been with the fire department for less than two months.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
