It is interesting that Twenger first started her research when she saw a large shift in women claiming to be masculine. Yes, it has risen for both but I think there is an important difference. A man can be very successful and of high status (wealthy, powerful, star os some sort) and be obese. I don't think the liklihood is the same for women. If women are obese it plays directly into her attractiveness and that is an important factor in women attracting mates. So the increase in obesity is likely more deleterious to women then to men. Equality: A Step Down for Women? I was talking with Paul Elam after his interview with Elizabeth Vargas on 20/20. Paul mentioned that one of the things he had told Vargas was that equality would be a step down for women. He said it stopped her in her tracks. She was speechless as he explained his reasons. This video is a youtubue version of that conversation. Many thanks to Paul for his help in writing the script. I remember as a boy that I really wanted to be a pro baseball player like Harmon Killebrew. I dreamed and wanted the accolades, the fans, the home runs and all the good stuff but was not the least bit interested nor even aware of the workouts, the grueling practices or any of the lifestyle that would be necessary even if I had the necessary talent. I think some of that is going on today. More importantly, in today's world we need to get jobs in baseball or in other workplaces based not on skin color, sex, religion or just about any other category other than the talent and skills that are needed to get the job done. Finding the most qualified candidate is a win for everyone especially when we do it based on character, skills, knowledge and talent and not on skin color or sex or religion. This is a short clip of what happened prior to the rally for "Men and Boys in Crisis" at the University of Toronto Saturday Sept 28, 2013. A small group of feminist activists gathered not far from where we were setting up to start chanting their slogans accusing us of being sexist, racist, anti-gay and just about every other name you can think of as the day went on. I realized that we simply don't have a word to describe the process of men sacrificing for women and having their needs and safety be ignored or minimized. There is the term "chivalry" but it only describes the actions given not the corresponding expendability. We have the word Gynocentric but this doesn't address the resulting hardships men face. We simply don't have a word we can use to call out people who focus only on the needs and wants of women and ignore the needs and wants of men. It felt like we needed a word that we could look at someone and say, "You have a bad case of xxxx." which with one word would incorporate the ideas of chivalry, gynocentrism and the resulting and all too often hidden men's expendability. While watching the NFL Channel the other night I happened upon a DV commercial about domestic violence that included such luminaries as President Obama, Vice President Biden and some sports figures. The commercial was asking men to step up to the plate and stop violence against women. I was shocked. Was this the president who promised that his administration would be run based on science and research? Did he not realize that his own CDC had come out with stats that showed that men were the majority of domestic violence victims in the past year? If he was aware of that this commercial didn't show it. At any rate, I thought I would do them a favor and quickly give them two commercials for the price of one! We have only heard half the story about domestic violence and that half is the female victims and male perpetrators. But there is another side to this story. The male victims and female perpetrators. Men have been hammered with harsh judgments for the last 40 years. We all know about male bashing on television. Sadly, there is a similar bias in mental health research. This video give a quick glimpse into three studies which show this anti-male bias. We have all grown to trust "research" and when we hear that a study shows that "X is correct" we tend to automatically believe that "X" is correct. Research has taken on an almost divine ethos that carries the seal of approval of correctness. If science says it, it must be so. The problem of course is that science, especially social science, is less than concrete and is much more slippery than measuring a distance or the tensile strength of a bar of steel. Mental health research is much more vulnerable to values and ideologies of the researchers. If a scientist believes a certain thing it usually has little impact on his measurements of the tensile strength of the bar of steel. No matter what he believes the measurement will likely be the same. But what about issues in social sciences where researchers come to the table with a large amount of preconceived ideas, allegiances to ideologies that espouse strong opinions about those being studied or have traumatic life histories that bias them against certain groups? Can those sorts of things influence the "findings" of a social science study? You bet they can. Gone is the impartial judge weighing the evidence and sifting through the data to find the truth. In today's world of social science research the opposite is happening: researchers are starting at their pre-conceived bias's and then designing research to prove that bias. As bizarre as that sounds it is demonstrably true in some social science research. You will see some of that within this video.
