Even though the idea of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ is sacrosanct in American jurisprudence, current Missouri law forces a gun owner to prove their innocence in the wake of a self-defense shooting. This means that you can be arrested and charged on the whim of an anti-gun prosecutor even though they have no case! Sixteen states have fixed this problem, granting a presumption of innocent to their citizens and requiring the government to prove that the gun owner is guilty in court. Twenty four states have added civil immunity to gun owners who are forced to defend themselves, unless they are convicted in criminal court. Despite all of this, Republican Senators Lincoln Hough and Jason Bean (and Justin Brown, effectively) sided with the radical left and Michael Bloomberg’s lobbyists in Jeff City and voted MOFC’s legislation to address these issues down in committee!
