Nov. 21, 1963 | President and Mrs. Kennedy Remarks to Latin American Citizens, Houston
Nov. 21, 1963 - Jacqueline Kennedy tonight capped a day of handshaking and politicking for her husband with a speech in almost-flawless Spanish to a Latin-American audience in Houston, Texas that brought down the house. For four hours after her arrival with President Kennedy in Texas, the First Lady looked windblown and somewhat disarrayed, but happy. Tonight she appeared before the League of United Latin American Citizens looking radiant in a black velvet suit. President Kennedy spoke briefly in English to the 650 people at the meeting, recalling “the very important links we have with our sister republics in this hemisphere.” The First Lady then hailed “the great state of Texas” in fluent Spanish.

Nov. 21, 1963 | Richard Nixon Remarks on President Kennedy
Nov. 21, 1963 - Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon, on a business trip to Dallas, Texas, a city President Kennedy visits tomorrow, said today that the 1964 Republican nominee must beat Mr. Kennedy on his record, not on personalities. “President Kennedy’s public relations is tremendous,” Mr. Nixon said. “But his performance is poor.” Mr. Nixon said the Republican nominee must attack Mr. Kennedy on his record of non-achievement, his “brave talk but no action,” the deterioration of foreign policy toward Latin America and Southeast Asia, and “what is apparently our permanent unemployment.” Mr. Nixon said Mr. Kennedy’s failure to handle Congress, where he has a 2-1 majority, “shows his lack of leadership much better than anything else.” Mr. Nixon again denied he would seek the Republican nomination, but he said: “I am going to work as hard as I can to get the Kennedys out of there. We can’t afford four more years of that kind of Administration.”

Nov. 20, 1963 | Dallas Police Chief Remarks on JFK Visit
Nov. 20, 1963 - Roughly 5,000 copies of a flyer showing President Kennedy in mugshot-style photographs and accusing him of “treason” have been posted under windshield wipers and in newspaper racks in Dallas prior to Mr. Kennedy’s visit tomorrow. The flyer accuses the President of a range of offenses, from being “lax” on Communism, to “appointing anti-Christians to Federal office,” to lying to the American people about his personal life. Dallas police chief Jesse Curry has said anybody caught distributing the flyers will be arrested for littering. Chief Curry added at a press conference today: “Nothing must occur that is disrespectful or degrading to the President of the United States. He is entitled to the highest respect, and the law enforcement agencies of this area are going to do everything possible to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. We will take immediate action if any suspicious conduct is observed, and we also urge all good citizens to be alert for such conduct. Citizens themselves may take preventative action if it becomes obvious that someone is planning to commit an act harmful or degrading to the President. I am sure that all but a handful of our citizens will cordially welcome the President of the United States to Dallas.” Chief Curry said 350 Dallas policemen, about a third of the force, will be assigned to the Kennedy guard detail Friday, and this will be supplemented by 40 state police and 15 Dallas deputy sheriffs.

Nov. 18, 1963 | Newsreel — Deadly Fire in Atlantic City
Nov. 18, 1963 - Twenty-five persons were feared to have died today in a fire that swept a 60-room, 4-story hotel in Atlantic City, N.J. Twenty-three persons, including firemen and policemen, were injured. The fire broke out at 4:10 a.m. at the Surfside Hotel at 156 South Maryland Ave. The hotel, which is about 200 feet from the Boardwalk, catered principally to elderly persons, most of whom stayed for extended periods. Before the fire was brought under control five hours later, it had spread to six other hotels or guest houses on South Maryland Ave. and Virginia Ave. Police Capt. James Dooney, who was the first to arrive at the Surfside, said he had tried to enter the hotel but had been met by a “kind of a blowup.” “I heard screams and yelling, but I couldn’t tell where it all came from,” he said, adding that the hotel lobby was engulfed in flames. A fireman said: “The building was collapsing all around us. I heard hollering inside. There’s no doubt that there were still some others in the place.” Milton Rauer, owner of the hotel, who lived there with his wife, three sons, his mother and father-in-law, said: “It went so quickly. We all jumped out a back window.” As the Surfside was collapsing, a heavy wind from the ocean fanned the flames and spread the fire, hampering efforts to bring it under control. One fireman, John Jasper, carried a screaming woman down a fire escape. He said he had “managed to put some tin garbage pail tops over our heads to protect us from shooting sparks.” Minnie Dackman, 65, rescued by firemen from the second floor of the Surfside, told how she “ran down the corridor, opened the window, and screamed.” “My hair was sizzling,” she said.
