Aera CEO Fred Laluyaux explains why AI-powered Decision Intelligence means better decisions!
Fresh from Aera Technology's AreaHub23 event last week, the company's first Decision Intelligence Summit, CEO Fred Laluyaux joined me to explain what Decision Intelligence means in 2023, how it benefits by and yet differs from the generative AI craze, the latest IDC research on how companies are making better decisions, why it is now a critical business initiative, and more!
Aera Technology https://www.aeratechnology.com is the Decision Intelligence company that is transforming enterprises with AI for decision automation. Aera Technology has been powering Decision Intelligence solutions since 2017.
I first met Aera's CEO Fred Laluyaux when he visited Australia in 2018, and wrote about our meeting and video interview in an article titled: "VIDEO Interview: Aera CEO explains the revolution cognitive AI technologies are bringing". https://itwire.com/business-it-news/business-intelligence/video-interview-aera-ceo-explains-the-revolution-cognitive-ai-technologies-are-bringing.html
We then spoke again last year in an article titled: "VIDEO Interview: Fred Laluyaux explains Decision Intelligence, how it helps and why it matters" https://itwire.com/business-it-news/business-intelligence/video-interview-fred-laluyaux-explains-decision-intelligence,-how-it-helps-and-why-it-matters.html
Both of those videos are embedded at the end of this article, but I also spoke with Fred earlier last week, on the back of the company’s AeraHUB 23 event https://aerahub.vesevent.com. Live from Manhattan on November 9, 2023, and now available to experience on-demand, the event brought together the innovators, thought leaders, and business champions who are at the centre of deploying AI for decision automation.
If you choose to watch the event, you'll see an exclusive presentation of new research from IDC on AI and decision automation, you'll see and hear Decision Intelligence success stories from practitioners and executive leaders at global brands, you'll get an overview of the new generative AI capabilities on the company's flagship "Aera Decision Cloud" - and more.
IDC's contribution was significant: its Aera-commissioned white paper titled "What Every Executive Needs to Know About AI-Powered Decision Intelligence” https://meet.aeratechnology.com/idc-what-every-executive-needs-to-know-ai, a global survey of Fortune 1000 companies which found decision velocity and AI-enabled decision making are key factors in value generation, revealing 75% of executive, VP, and director-level respondents expect to gain significant or very significant improvements if investments in Decision Intelligence initiatives are made.
More details on the white paper, Aera Technology, the AeraHub23 event and more, but first, let's watch my video interview above from last week with Aera CEO Fred Laluyaux!
In the white paper, IDC examines how enterprise decisions are made and the challenges and opportunities involved in achieving better decision making. The research identifies common characteristics of enterprises with decision velocity — defined by IDC as the speed at which a decision-making process can be executed within a set of enterprise controls — and the connection to business value and competitive differentiation.
Dan Vesset, https://www.linkedin.com/in/danvesset/ IDC's Group VP of Analytics and Information Management said; “While today’s headlines speculate about potential benefits and the future of AI, our research indicates that leading organisations are using AI, analytics, and data to generate value for their customers, employees, partners, investors, and communities.
“What unites these organisations are clear goals and KPIs to measure them, investments to accelerate decision velocity, and pragmatic use of enabling AI, analytics and data technologies and skills.”
The IDC research highlights responses from those that have connected or integrated IDC’s six steps of a decision-making process https://blogs.idc.com/2023/10/23/why-how-and-what-of-ai-powered-decision-intelligence/ (deemed “leaders”) — and those that have not (“followers”), uncovering the value of Decision Intelligence in enterprise AI initiatives. IDC cuts through the hype associated with AI, revealing findings that support Decision Intelligence and its ability to deliver return on investment in AI, analytics, and data.
More information from Aera Technology on the IDC research is at my article here:

Energous CEO Cesar Johnston explains the wireless power revolution!
Wireless power over distances is actually real today, and while we're not yet using it on an everyday basis to power our consumer electronics such as phones and tablets at a distance in our homes or offices, the technology IS being used right now with RF tags to gather detailed information in real time, while also being used with Electronic Shelf Labels and with IOT sensors, so let's hear from Cesar Johnston to learn more!
Energous. https://energous.com/ The company is a leader in the advancement of wireless charging technology, with the company stating its award-winning "WattUp technology" being the only solution that supports both near field and at-a-distance charging.
Here's the official Energous video that gives you a high-level explanation of its technology and capabilities:
EMBED VIDEO HERE: https://vimeo.com/802082664
So, how does the technology work?
Using an Energous PowerBridge transmitter to send energy via radio waves to Energous-enabled receiver devices, those radio waves are converted into DC power, which in turn charges the receiver device’s battery.
Working safely without interfering with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the tech was the first to receive FCC approval for Power-at-a-Distance, Energous provides both near field and over-the-air distance wireless charging solutions with its RF-based technology.
As the company explains, this technology offers designers flexible antenna designs supporting very small footprints as well as curved/non-flat surfaces, placement and orientation freedom, and removal of pogo pins or USB connectors allowing for fully waterproof and dustproof designs.
In addition, its near field and over-the-air distance charging solutions are interoperable.
The company's goal is to wirelessly power everything from the critical tools and devices that keep factories running to the instruments and wearables that monitor patient health.
Energous notes its next-gen tech, backed by hundreds of patents, supports a near-limitless range of applications without the need for cumbersome charging cables and ports that limit innovation and are prone to failure.
Now, I last spoke with Energous President and CEO, Cesar Johnston, https://www.linkedin.com/in/cesar-johnston-9329094/ at CES 2022, and I've embedded that earlier video interview below, but first is the interview with Cesar from late September 2023, which covers what happened since we last spoke at CES.
So, that recent interview is what is above this text, and if you want to see what the company was presenting at CES 2022, take a look at the earlier video interview at the end of this article!
Here is the first video interview from CES 2022:

See real augmented reality properly with CREAL's hardware & software solution arriving early 2024
With many augmented reality and virtual reality headsets showing images in a "flat" and unnatural way, as opposed to the the way the human eyes see images in the real world, a solution to solve this problem has arrived, and as you'll see in the video below, it's quite remarkable!
CREAL https://creal.com/ has developed a patented AR (Augmented Reality) light field micro-display technology stack, enabling a pair of glasses to uniquely project images into the eye providing correct depth perception.
By enabling continuous focus, from up-close to infinity, to match the real world depth, CREAL's technology enables a much-needed natural and healthy visual experience with no trade-off on image quality, computational requirements or system architecture.
The company's video below is a clear demonstration of the technology at work, which has been developed over the last six years, and with the tech commercially available for licensing and manufacturing from early 2024, the AR display technology enables headset makers to develop AR glasses that uniquely provide correct depth perception to users.
Once you seen the demo video below, it seems obvious that future augmented reality headsets will use this tech to bring our sci-fi enhanced expectations into reality, so let's see the video in question, with my video interview with the CEO and Co-Founder of CREAL, Dr Tomas Sluka, https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomas-sluka/?originalSubdomain=ch below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCrHWantFZE
Further information from CREAL is below, but let's take a look at that video interview above with Dr Tomas Sluka from late September 2023 to learn more!
So, what makes CREAL technology different to what's already available?
The company explains its light field tech is very different from the standard ‘flat’ images provided by current displays on the market, and notes that "light field-based content has real-world depth, even if viewed by a single eye."
CREAL further notes that it has developed a patented AR light field micro-display technology stack combining licensable hardware and software, and that "unlike current 3D displays which present two flat-screen images each to one eye, light field recreates the light rays as they exist in the real world, creating an incredibly realistic image with true depth and top quality."
The company says its light field technology is used with a combiner (no waveguides needed), a simple-to-apply thin holographic film laminated onto a standard or prescription lens.
The light field display technology also removes the main sources of eye-strain, eye-fatigue, and nausea that are so commonly experienced with AR and VR headsets today.
Indeed, we are told that "sSeveral leading AR glasses and headset ODM’s are currently evaluating CREAL technology for their next-generation designs, expected to become commercially available in 2024", and given the clearly visible benefits of CREAL's solution, it's obvious you'd want your future headset to work this way when displaying images to your eyes.
That's because AR headsets available on the market today can’t display close-up content painlessly due to the so-called ‘vergence accommodation conflict’ as well as focal rivalry, which as CREAL explains are known visual problems endemic to the entire AR and VR market.
As a result, CREAL notes "all AR content is recommended by the headset makers to be displayed at a distance significantly distant from the user’s eyes, which is totally antithetical to real-world viewing. Our eyes evolved with the ability to focus to less than 20 cm for that very reason."
Dr. Tomas Sluka, CREAL's co-founder and CEO said: "By enabling continuous focus from up-close to infinity - matching the real world depth perceived by users - CREAL enables a natural and healthy visual experience with no substantial trade-offs regarding image quality, computational requirements or system architecture (unlike competing solutions)."
CREAL has now raised a total aggregate funding of $18M US, with a team of 30 people worldwide. Participating VC firms include Swisscom Ventures, Verve Ventures and DAA Capital Partners, with the company now opening up a new round of funding for interested worldwide capital funds.
Here is a summary of the topics we spoke about:
- I started by introducing Dr Tomas Sluka, asking him to explain what augmented reality is, and what the current problems are in display it on existing headsets.
- Tomas then explained the CREAL solution and why it is different, while also explaining how the images are projected so your eyes can see them in a much more natural manner.
- Clarifying that CREAL doesn't make its own headsets but partners with headset manufacturers, while also wondering whether Apple's Vision Pro headset can do the same kind of thing, Dr Sluka explained when we might see the technology commercialised in products people can buy.
- Tomas shared what the journey of creating CREAL has been like, and the company's plans for further investment.
- I then asked what CREAL stands for, and how Dr Sluka and his co-founder came up with the idea to create CREAL technology, after which he shared how he thinks the technology will evolve over the next couple of years.
- Tomas then shared memories of his first computer, the first headset he remembers trying, great advice received in life, and his final message to the viewers and readers.
So, please watch the videos above and below to learn more!

AUSTRALIAN LAUNCH VIDEO: Dreame's new L20 Ultra robotic vacuum with tech to clean right to the edge
Dreame doesn't just want to be seen as creating cutting-edge technology, but also cleaning-edge tech, with robotics a core technology not just in its flagship robotic vacuums, but also with its robot dog, and in the future, humanoid robots and maybe even robot cars!
The robot vacuum market has never had more players, be it Ecovacs, iRobot Roomba, Samsung, LG, Neato, Dyson, Eufy, Xiaomi, Roborock and even brands like Kogan are rebadging cheaper Chinese models - and of course, there's Dreame, https://dreame.com.au/ which has just launched its most premium, flagship model yet, the L20 Ultra, with a new upgraded automatic base station. https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbTRxdFgwSk1qc2ZLcEJsc2k5bUZNcjBGN01lZ3xBQ3Jtc0tseHBTSXk2YnRvOHRheml4VUFMdGNtMHN1S3JiZVhrU1QtTmZmS2s5WmxmUF9RT3Izamx0SzR6bjFsUTFhaUM0OWtvY2ppaWVaZTN5VmUyMnREajZPU3JIVllCTzJhWVlxc2NURmE1SkZUQ3c1RDlQdw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fdreame.com.au%2Fproducts%2Fdreame-l20-ultra-robot-vacuum-and-mop-cleaner-with-auto-mop-cleaning-and-drying-self-refilling-and-self-emptying-base-station&v=f-Wuj4Tj-6M
Launched a little earlier this year at IFA 2023 in Germany, where the L20 Ultra’s features, including the AI-driven MopExtend technology billed as a "new breakthrough" that provides in-depth edge cleaning was on show, the L20 Ultra was not only recognised as “Best of IFA”, https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbnF4WnU1U1N0T1dmZTgxaDlwN3k0YXQzUlpxd3xBQ3Jtc0trYUJRMGpMclVBeVN2UjQtWFJpQjlnTk5oZlVlUWt0UXc2Zy1GbjdHbDl5Z0ZqNkFpbnR0bHYza2pwWUwzeEY5R1lqZ1I4c1FuNm5JTjVfQmo4MWtpbHg4cHMwTF94R21HbTMtUlRxZXl0bzRrUVlpVQ&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.prnewswire.com%2Fnews-releases%2Fdreamebot-l20-ultra-has-recognized-as-best-of-ifa-with-numerous-media-awards-301918819.html&v=f-Wuj4Tj-6M but also received numerous media awards.
As Dreame explains, the L20 Ultra is a smart home appliance which takes detailed cleaning to a whole new level, a fully automatic robotic vacuum that not only cleans floors, but also cleans itself, while also being the first Dreame product to feature the new logo.
So, given that a round robotic vacuum clearly has issues in being able to reach corners and edges, how has Dreame solved this problem, and how does it work?
That question is answered below, but first, here's the full Australian launch event, after which is more detail on the L20 Ultra, and even further below that is a lengthier video demonstration on the L20 Ultra by one of Dreame Technologies' technical experts, Walter. You'll also find the Q&A session from the event, and lastly, a demonstration of the Dreame robot dog which is on sale in China and which will come to Australia in the future.

ZapBatt: next-gen, SAFE, rechargeable batteries fix Li-Ion problems!
VIDEO INTERVIEW: ZapBatt - the next-gen, SAFE, rechargeable battery with long lifespan that fixes Lithium-Ion's problems is REAL and in production
Imagine a rechargeable battery you can safely recharge to full in less than 20 mins, with a 25+ year battery cycle lifespan, with no thermal runaway fire problem, using AI smarts to optimise itself, and which operates well beyond Li-Ion's temperature range. This battery of the future exists TODAY and it's called ZapBatt!
ZapBatt https://www.zapbatt.com - it's the future of batteries today, but they're not the batteries most people are using yet, and my video interviews with ZapBatt CEO and founder Charlie Welch embedded a little further below, which I conducted this week and last year - are extremely illuminating, and are definitely MUST WATCH.
But what's the situation today? For most of us, lithium-ion batteries are the rechargeable power source for the laptops, smartphones, tablets, smart watches, power tools, wireless security cameras, electric cars, electric scooters, home battery systems and other devices we use every day, but in 2023, there's a MASSIVE problem with these batteries.
The problem is they're catching fire, with the resulting fires virtually impossible to put out until the batteries have burnt through the chemicals contained within, spewing out toxic smoke that is the very opposite of environmentally friendly.
Even in Australia, our "Competition and Consumer Commission" has issued recalls on LG Home Battery solar power storage systems, urging Australians to IMMEDIATELY switch them off, https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/consumers-warned-to-switch-off-potentially-dangerous-lg-solar-batteries-immediately and has also issued a separate warning for the lithium-ion batteries used in all our everyday devices, advising consumers to look out for battery damage, to not leave batteries on charge, and more, all to avoid extremely dangerous battery fires. https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/consumers-urged-to-use-and-store-lithium-ion-batteries-safely-to-prevent-deadly-fires
Whether people are treating their electric scooters in a rough manner, whether they're purchasing cheap replacement batteries online, or are using third party charging systems that aren't genuine, or whether the batteries get damaged in some way, batteries powered by traditional Lithium-Ion batteries are causing massive fires, and in greater numbers than ever.
These fires have caused freighter ships loaded with electric cars to sink, they have damaged other cars in parking stations when they catch fire, they've caused people to die from the toxic smoke, and these fires can even re-ignite a day or more later if the damaged batteries haven't yet burnt through all the chemicals.
Thankfully, there is a solution, and it is through using Lithium Titanate as the battery chemistry, as Charlie Welch, https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlie-welch-a5456a107/ the CEO and Founder of ZapBatt explains in the video below, coupled with a battery operating system that can actually work with a variety of battery chemistries.
So, let's take a look at my most recent video interview with Charlie, before we continue with the article, so please watch the video above and read on!
As you would have heard in the video interview above, one of the huge advantages of Lithium Titanate or LTO battery chemistries is that it enables a FULL charge in less than 20 minutes, with Charlie stating 10 to 15 minutes.
This is incredible, given that most batteries take hours to charge, and with even fast charging only working to charge many mobile phones to only 50% in 30 minutes.
Then there's the problem of Li-ion batteries having relatively short charging cycles, from 500 recharges to 1500, after which the battery goes down to 80% of its life, and unable to maintain peak power delivery.
ZapBatt's LTO batteries are capable of 15,000+ charging cycles, which equates to 25+ years of active use - another MASSIVE advantage over today's widely used rechargeable batteries - and they retain 90% capacity after that time, so can actually continue being used even longer.
My original article with Charlie Welch from April 2022 can be seen here https://itwire.com/your-it-news/home-it/video-interview-zapbatt-the-next-gen-rechargeable-battery-that-fixes-li-ion-s-problems-is-here.html, but I'm embedding that video interview immediately below - it's just as relevant today in 2023 as it was in 2022, but naturally, the video above has updated information the 2022 video didn't have.
https://youtu.be/0Gu0DUnY0sg?si=M8GGB1_leARVNNIQ
ZapBatt also has a great introductory video at its site, which I haven't seen anywhere online, so I've uploaded it to YouTube and have embedded it below, it is also a MUST WATCH video, with the ZapBatt site https://www.zapbatt.com site having more information!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWR36oycsvo
Here's a summary of the topics I spoke with Charlie about:
- I started by introducing Charlie Welch, noting it has been a year and a half since we last spoke, and asked him to remind us why LTO batteries are so superior to exiting rechargeable battery technologies
- We then discussed the runaway thermal reactions that damaged lithium-ion batteries have been causing, and have increasingly been in the news about, spewing toxic fumes and causing massive damage to life, limb and property
- Charlie shared the advances the technology has made since we spoke last year, as well as going further into ZapBatt's partnership with Toshiba, and when we can expect to see ZapBatt's LTO batteries appearing inside brands and products we already know well
- Sharing what else we need to know about ZapBatt, and how the technology and sector will evolve over the next few years, Charlie then answered my usual closing questions, sharing a memory of his first personal computer, and great advice he has received in life, then finishing with his final message to the viewers and readers.
So... ZapBatt's technology is the battery revolution we've been waiting for, and coupled with the operating system ZapBatt uses to manage its batteries and battery chemistries, the future where batteries are safer and longer-lasting than ever can't come quickly enough.

FULL VIDEO BRIEFING: Cisco unveils its next-generation environmental sustainability strategy
Global networking, cloud, and cybersecurity solutions tech titan Cisco is changing how it operates its business, engages with suppliers, and helps customers and communities, focusing on a transition to clean energy, a circular business strategy, resilient ecosystems, energy efficient and more - please watch the video briefing and read on!
Global leader in technology and networking solutions, Cisco, announced late last month the launch of “The Plan for Possible,” https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/about/csr/environmental-sustainability.html its ambitious and comprehensive environmental sustainability strategy that "aims to build a regenerative future."
The full video briefing is below, but first, let's take a look at Cisco's 1 minute and 23 second "The Plan for Possible" video - there's plenty more of this article below, so please watch and read on!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T-iqYwdZAU
Cisco notes the prediction that 2023 is "on track to being the hottest year on record," and the oft-repeated claim there is a "critical need to limit the temperature rise to no more than 1.5C to avoid catastrophic changes to the climate, and we are currently at 1.1C", and is putting its money where its mouth is by putting its comprehensive new environmental sustainability strategy into practice.
Stating that "the world needs a sustainable future: one in which we can phase out our reliance on fossil fuels, address a century’s worth of pollution, provide economic opportunity to communities around the world, and align our activities with the physical boundaries of our Earth," Cisco states "the progress we make in this decade will be critical for future generations."
Again, Cisco is taking concrete actions to back up its stance, noting that it isn't just "acknowledging these pressing issues," but is actually going "beyond the 'doing no harm' approach and building a holistic strategy to environmental sustainability," where "the 'plan for possible' includes how the company operates its business, how it engages with suppliers, and how it helps customers and communities reduce their environmental impacts and adapt to a changing world."
Mary de Wysocki, https://newsroom.cisco.com/c/r/newsroom/en/us/executives/mary-de-wysocki.html Chief Sustainability Officer at Cisco, said: "The world is connected, but we’re suffering from new forms of disconnection: from each other and our health, and from the health of the planet. Fortunately, technology can help us rethink operating and business models in ways that are digital and low carbon, but also improve individual wellbeing and create opportunities for communities.
“With Cisco technology, we are helping power the world with affordable clean energy through digitising smart grids and smart buildings, we are designing out waste by re-building products from used ones, and we are using the Internet of Things (IoT) to protect the world’s biodiversity.”
Mary's blog post on the "Plan for Possible" is here. https://blogs.cisco.com/csr/the-plan-for-possible-connecting-a-regenerative-future
Above is Cisco's video briefing to Asia Pacific and Australian media. Below is more information on Cisco's top three priorities in this area:
Here are Cisco's three priorities, in its unedited words:
Priority 1: Transition to clean energy
To power the world with renewables, the grid requires updated digital infrastructure to connect diverse, decentralised sources of clean energy. But even as the world electrifies, there is a need to simultaneously reduce the amount of energy used by a connected economy. As a part of this priority, Cisco has set a goal to reach Net Zero https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/about/csr/environmental-sustainability/net-zero.html across its value chain by 2040, which includes both its suppliers and our customers’ use of energy.
The company is tackling this with leading energy efficiency innovation, connecting clean energy and digitising the grid and collaborating with customers, partners, and suppliers to accelerate the energy transition. With connectivity at the heart of digitalisation, Cisco is in a unique position to equip businesses with technology solutions that help them achieve their sustainability goals. This includes the Silicon One chip, Cisco’s networking device for AI processing which reduces energy consumption https://newsroom.cisco.com/c/r/newsroom/en/us/a/y2022/m10/changing-the-world-one-mass-scale-infrastructure-at-a-time.html while increasing bandwidth, and Universal Power Over Ethernet (PoE) to optimise energy use https://blogs.cisco.com/csr/sustainability-101-how-smart-buildings-help-the-planet-and-people for smart buildings. Cisco also is helping its supply chain set GHG reduction targets. https://www.cisco.com/c/m/en_us/about/csr/esg-hub/environment/goals.html (Note: Cisco states it "has the goal that 80% of Cisco component, manufacturing, and logistics suppliers by spend have a public, absolute GHG emissions reduction target by FY25," and notes: "we are at 78% as of FY22.")
INSERT THREE PRIORITIES GRAPHIC HERE (Sarah, it is attached to this email as "plan for possible graphic)
Priority 2: Evolve the business to circular
Cisco aims to transform its business to extend the useful life of its products and provide ongoing services. It aims to do so by adopting and scaling its business models to extend the product value and reduce environmental impacts , investing in technology incubation to be at pace with environmental science and championing a digital, nature-positive value chain.
The company is on track to achieving its goal of incorporating circular design principles into 100 percent of new products and packaging by 2025. Also, it launched several programs that enable circularity in its value chain:
- The Cisco Takeback and Reuse Program, https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/about/takeback-and-reuse.html which lets customers return hardware that has reached end-of-use, at no cost.
- Green Pay, https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/buy/payment-solutions/circular-payment.html a circular IT payment solution, that eliminates upfront hardware acquisition costs, offers predictable payments for 5 years, and an incentive of 5 percent. As part of this program, Cisco recovers products free of charge so these can be reused or recycled.
- Remanufacturing devices through Cisco Refresh https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/remanufactured.html to give them a new life for our business and planet.
Priority 3: Invest in resilient ecosystems
Recognising the importance of resilient ecosystems and investing in regenerative solutions, Cisco sets its third priority on enabling communities to adapt to climate realities, cultivating talent for the regenerative economy, and deploying technology to protect and restore ecosystems.
In 2021, Cisco Foundation committed $100 million investment over ten years in climate solutions that already draw down the carbon in the atmosphere and help regenerate depleted ecosystems.
All of Cisco’s strategic priorities are underpinned by strong governance, embedding sustainability into its operations with the intent to maintain alignment with scientific advancements.
“Sustainability is a top priority for the government, with India pledging a climate pact to become net zero by 2070. As a trusted technology partner to businesses across the country, we are committed to innovate with our customers’ sustainability goals in mind, and help businesses make choices with an eye towards a more sustainable digital future,” said Daisy Chittilapilly, https://www.linkedin.com/in/daisy-chittilapilly-860695a3/?originalSubdomain=in President, Cisco India & SAARC.

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Shokz adds DirectPitch headphones to its Bone Conduction range: the anti-AirPods!
While many people want “noise cancelling headphones” while on airplanes or in noisy environments, there are other times when you genuinely want the open-ear listening experience, which Shokz famously delivers, not just through its 9th-generation bone conduction headsets, but its new DirectPitch OpenFit headset too, with Coco Zhong and Freya Chang of Shokz joining me to explain more.
Bone conduction technology to deliver sound has been around for decades, even in use during WWII so soldiers could hear and be heard on the very noisy battlefield, but today, having situational awareness means the opposite of active noise cancellation, for very purposeful reasons.
If you’ve ever heard of pedestrians aimlessly walking across the road, not able to hear the traffic around them, and even ended up in accidents because they were in their own sonic worlds, then you know one of the scenarios were bone conduction and direct pitch headsets truly excel, as they deliver the audio experience you desire - without blocking out the rest of the world.
What you achieve and receive is situational awareness, which modern bone conduction pioneer Shokz https://shokz.com.au/ calls the Open-Ear listening experience, which “embodies the principle of being open to your surroundings and nature and allows you to immerse yourself in music while remaining open to the world.”
This is the opposite of headphones that “chase an isolated listening experience”, which definitely have their time and place, but in other scenarios, you definitely want to be open to easy communication, to hearing the traffic around you, or to be more aware of your surroundings, even if you’re listening to streaming media or having a conversation on the phone.
Available in over 60 countries and regions, with over 7 million customers, nearly 3000 patents applied for and over 950 granted, Shokz has progressed through nine generations of bone conduction headsets, having launched the OpenRun range, https://shokz.com.au/collections/all and this year introduced its new OpenFit headphones https://shokz.com.au/collections/all that uses a different type of open-ear technology, which the company calls DirectPitch.
More details on the range and technology are below, but first, let’s take a look at my video interview with Coco Zhong, Shokz Marketing Manager for Australia and New Zealand, and Freya Chang, the Product Marketing Manager for the OpenFit range, which is embedded immediately below - please watch and read on!
EMBED VIDEO HERE: https://youtu.be/jhyAyuHaVBM
So, how does Shokz define the Open-Ear listening experience?
The company explains if you’ve ever wanted to enjoy your music while being aware of your surroundings, then Open-Ear headphones may be the solution you're looking for.
Unlike traditional earbuds, which sit in your ear canal and block out external sounds, Shokz explains its open-ear headphones use Bone Conduction Technology or DirectPitch Technology to transmit sound to your ears without obstructing them, which allows you to stay aware of your surroundings while still enjoying your favorite tunes.
Open-Ear listening delivers a personalised and immersive audio experience that doesn't isolate you from the world around you, while letting you hear ambient sounds while enjoying your favorite music or podcast, making them perfect for everyday use.
And because you can enjoy your music without blocking out ambient sounds, you can be running on a busy street, hiking in the woods, or just going for a run around the block, and be kept safer, sharper, and more connected to the world around you, while actually being in comfort, and not worrying that your expensive AirPods or other earbuds are going to pop out of your ears, fall into the grass or disappear down the drain.
And because they leave the ear canal open, all of the Shokz range alleviates the pressure that can build up with in-ear headphones, keeping you much more comfortable - especially if you’re someone that just find their ears compatible with earbuds of any brand.
So, while bone conduction technology is well known to use vibrations sent through the cheekbones, delivering sound directly to the inner ear and bypassing the eardrum, the new OpenFit headlines use a cutting-edge technology the company calls DirectPitch.
Billed as revolutionising sound transmission by precisely directing sound waves and creating an optimised sound field with varying pressure distribution, Shokz explains its harnesses the principle of sound wave superposition to ensure an enhanced audio experience with precise directionality and immersive sound quality.
You can learn more about Shokz’ technologies and milestones here https://shokz.com.au/pages/openear-technology, with its products widely available in Australia through JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, the Shokz website, and other retailers.
A review of both the OpenRun Pro and OpenFit are coming soon!
