The One Man Airforce
We originally did this as a short but by popular request we have now remade it as a full film.
It’s January 11, 1944, and over 140 B17’s from the 401st Bomber Group are locked in desperate combat in the skies above Germany. Bf 109s, 110s, and FW 190s swarm all over the American machines. At the head of the formation Lieutenant Colonel Allison C. Brooks can do nothing but encourage his men forward and hope. 44 P-51 Mustangs of the 354th Fighter Group race to the rescue. Lead by Major James H. Howard he spots the battle taking place through the clouds but also a second group of BF 109s far below, he’s evaluating the situation when suddenly a voice shouts over the radio “go down and get them!”
To his complete horror his entire fighter group immediately dives for the Messerschmitts. He tries to order them back but in the confusion only 3 of his fighters abort the run while the rest head straight into combat. How could just 3 of them hold off the Germans? What happens next is an incredible feat of aviation skill by Howard. Brooks later said of Howard’s defense of the B-17s, "For sheer determination and guts, it was the greatest exhibition I've ever seen. It was a case of one lone American against what seemed to be the entire Luftwaffe. He was all over the wing, across and around it. They can't give that boy a big enough award."

Thai Fighters vs USA
Outnumbered and against all odds, five Thai Fighter Pilots went into battle against sixteen superior American planes. Despite their bravery and tenacity, it was to be a one-sided combat, with the Thai's being taken down one by one. Yet, in the desperate fight they managed to shoot down one of the Americans. The plane of Henry Minco, the fallen pilot, was found 75 years later by a team that included RTAF Air Chief Marshall Sakpinit Promthep, USAF Major Daniel Jackson, and Mr. Hak Hakanson. In January 2024 the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency is due to excavate the site in the hope of finding and repatriating Minco's remains. This incredible story was brought to us by Major Jackson who reached out to the chan

WW1 Balloon Buster and the Chinese Balloon
It’s September 12th, 1918 and at the controls of his SPAD S:XIII fighter is 2nd Lieutenant Frank Luke. He’s about to take down his first German observation balloon. The Germans have been spying on the enemy using these Hydrogen filled balloons as a way to get vital information on troop movements.
Frank pulls the trigger. Finally, one of his incendiary bullets detonates within the balloon. The small flame of the explosion grows rapidly, swelling and consuming the highly flammable hydrogen, exploding out of the balloon, and continuing to grow into the air as it chases the plume of leaking gas.
But this is just the start for the Arizona balloon buster. He went on to become an ace in a day, having 17 confirmed victories and receiving the medal of honor. A brave and daring pilot his legacy echoes through history even to today when in 2023 the callsigns for the F-22s that shot down the Chinese balloon were Frank01 and Frank02.

When Two B-17s Flew Piggyback
Lt Glenn Rojohn of the 8th Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group was flying his B-17 Flying Fortress on a raid over Germany. What happened next is a story of bravery and skill that defied the odds.
You can read more in Cyndi Rojohn's excellent book, "The Piggyback Flight Pilot's Journey" published by Fulton Books.

When a Phantom Pushed Another F4 out of Danger
Pardo's Push was an event over the skies of Vietnam where Captain John R. Pardo and Lieutenant Steve Wayne pushed another damaged F4 across the border to avoid capture. Unwilling to leave his wing man behind Pardo saved the crew with an incredibly selfless act of bravery and ingenuity.

Erich Hartmann the World's Greatest Flying Ace
Despite his cavalier attitude and lack of discipline, Hartmann’s training officers realized that he was an immensely talented pilot, and tolerated his behaviour.
He flew more than 1,400 missions enabling him to score an astonishing 352 victories.
Hartmann’s reputation had grown so immense that when many Soviet pilots saw the notorious Messerschmitt Bf 109 approaching they would turn tail and head home.
This flying menace had to be stopped, but no one ever did. Erich Hartmann's record will never be broken.

When 1 Tank Defeated 22 German Tanks
During the defense of Leningrad a well laid trap resulted in a spectacular victory with just 1 tank taking out 22 German Tanks and 2 Anti-tank guns. Zinoviy Kolobanov commanded his KV-1 to deal a crushing blow to the invaders. In total, in and around "Tank Alley" 5 Russian KV-1s destroyed 43 tanks. Despite being repeatedly hit, the thick armor of the KV-1 was key to the success of the operation.
Thanks to one of our viewers, Vadim, for sending us the footage of Tank Alley today.

God's Rambo and His Ghost Camaro
Not Michael Knight but Helge Meyer "a loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless". With the help of the US forces he took a standard Camaro and turned it into an armored lifeline for those in need in the former Yugoslavia.
Thanks to Helge for supplying us with the reference photos at the end of this video and for putting us straight on some of the points in the text. Any errors or embellishments are our own.

When Secret Soviet MiG Aces Fought US Sabres
In the skies over Korea at the height of the Cold War, Soviet fighter aces secretly fought against the UN forces. Northwest Korea over the Yalu river, also known as MiG Alley is where most of these engagements occurred. The US pilots named these talented aviators "Honchos". The Head Honcho that patrolled over MiG Alley, was nicknamed "Casey Jones" or "Ol' Casey". Flying a MIG 15 bis with a special paint job, Casey Jones was none other than Soviet WW2 pilot Sergei Kramarenko.
Thanks to Vika for translating the information from the Russian sources. In particular Sergei Kramarenko's memoire, "Against Messerschmitts and Sabre Jets. In the Sky of Two Wars" by Sergei Kramarenko.
We also took references from the excellent book F-86 Sabre vs MiG-15: Korea 1950-53 by Douglas C. Dildy and Warren Thompson.

When a BF-109 Spared a B-17
December 20th 1943, a badly shot up B-17 struggled to stay in the air, at the controls Charlie Brown. Passing low over a German airfield, it was spotted by Franz Stigler who raced to intercept, just one victory away from receiving the Knight's Cross. What happened next would be called one of the most incredible acts of kindness between enemies.
Thanks to Adam Makos for allowing us to use the footage of the first meeting of Stigler and Brown. You should also read the full story in the book 'A Higher Call' by Adam Makos & Larry Alexander.

The Char B1 that Destroyed a Panzer Company
The French defense against the German Blitzkrieg usually gets told one way. However there were pockets of resistance where the French fought tough successful battles against the German invaders. One of the stand out battles is that of the Char B1 bis called Eure. Alone, stood up to and destroyed an entire Panzer company in the village of Stonne.

A Giant with a Volcanic Temper — the Only Man Awarded the VC on D-Day
Storming the D-Day beach, Hollis didn’t take cover. Instead, in a moment of extreme courage, he stood up and ran zigzagging towards the German bunker with his gun blazing, slapping in a new magazine as he reached the enemy and silenced the threat, he then moved on to the second bun-ker taking 25 Germans prisoner. Sergeant Stanley Hollis continued to storm into action throughout the day. For displaying the utmost gallantry, he was the only man to be awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day, an incredible feat.

When Germans, Americans and French Fought on the Same Side
Castle Itter in Austria was the setting of one of the strangest battles of WW2, where an unlikely group fought together to stop the SS from terminating French VIP's.
The book, “The Last Battle” by Stephen Harding accurately lays out the details of this incredible battle where The Americans, The French, The Wehrmacht and an SS Officer fought together to defend the lives of French VIPs. Any errors or omissions in the story are entirely our own.

Pegasus Bridge
An essential mission to capture 2 bridges in France was undertaken on the night before D-Day. Essential to protect the flank of Sword beach, it was a daring raid. Unable to come in by parachute as they were too slow, the men were delivered by Horsa gliders.

Flying Tigers
The Flying Tigers. First rate American pilots who in search of adventure went to help the Chinese break Japanese air superiority. Under the command of Claire Lee Chennault they were one of the first to strike back against Japan after the attack at Pearl Harbor. On Christmas day 1941 Bill Reed took part in a major battle that was to mark the change of tide in the domination of the air over Burma and China.
To hear more of Major General Fred Chiao's story you can see an interview with him here — https://www.witnesstowar.org/combat_stories/WWII/4475
Also to find out more about this incident and others, the book The Flying Tigers by Sam Kleiner is an excellent read.

When a BF-109 Sliced Through a B-17
The All American, high over the skies of Tunisia was practically split in two by a BF-109. A testament to the ruggedness of these birds was that this one kept flying and got all the crew back safely to Biskra air base. Over the years many versions of this story have been embellished with the mistruths. We tried to stick to the facts for this one, leaving out embellishments such as the lashing together of parachutes to keep the tail on and falsehoods such as landing in England over 2000 miles away! We think it's an amazing story with just the facts.

WW2 Ace in a Sabre
WW2 Ace and Squadron Leader Major George Andrew Davis became the first American to be an Ace in two wars, excelling as the commander of the 334th Fighter Squadron in the Korean War. Despite protocol recalling Aces back to the U.S., his irreplaceable leadership kept him in Korea where he achieved Double Ace status. Davis tragically lost his life in MiG Alley in 1952, but was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart.

9 Year Old Corporal
In August 1914 Momčilo Gavrić was orphaned at 8 years old and was adopted by unit that took revenge for the loss of his family. Assisting the troops during battle he was unflinching in his bravery and was promoted to Corporal at the age of just 9 years old. He fought in the great war and saw action in WW2 once again fighting the Germans and remained defiant even after his capture. An incredible story of bravery, friendship and duty.

When a CIA Agent Fell to Earth
Francis Gary Powers was in a Lockheed U2 spy plane flying over the Soviet Union. These spy planes had been flying untouched by the USSR given their high altitude and speed. Even though missile systems had been developed to go that high, the U-2's were only in range for a short time. Powers mission was the first to attempt to fly from Pakistan right across the Soviet Union. It was a gamble. One that didn't pay off when Powers was brought down by the Soviets. The USA tried to cover up the affair saying it was a scientific weather flight. But the Soviets interrogated and tried Powers for espionage.
